VENTURA COUNTY PROFESSIONAL WOMENʼS NETWORK Post Office Box 6329 Oxnard, CA 93031 (866) 275-4134 www.VCPWN.org Minutes VENTURA COUNTY PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S NETWORK LEADERSHIP TEAM MEETING, JANUARY 17, 2013 IN ATTENDANCE: Rita Frayer, Mary Gabriels, Shirley Jones, Shirley Lorraine, Sheila Lowe, Michelle McConica, Jim Nicoll, Sue Osborn, and Darian Taylor. We planned a ribbon party on Monday the 21st at Shirley J’s home at 3:00 to put the gifts together. Sue will buy bags. Shirley has plenty of ribbon and her mom will tie ribbon on the bookmarks. ABSENT: Alison Balter, Bernadette Cardenas, Jann Huling Networking – Alison Balter No report as Alison was absent. President Mary Gabriels called the meeting to order at 6:20 p.m. at her home. President-Elect – Darian Taylor In February the speaker will be Roylin Downs from Kama Sutra Closet. Merle DiVita will sponsor. Rita Frayer moved that the minutes from the November 2012 meeting be approved, and Sheila Lowe seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Webmaster/Membership – Sheila Lowe New buttons are up on the website to make selections for the February dinner - for person 1 and person 2. Membership committee met last on Tuesday and Charlotte Werner Gesling joined in, which was a nice surprise. New member breakfast invitations have all gone out. We are booked at Mimi’s Cafe. It was suggested that we have a limited menu so we don’t spend too much time making selections. Sue will contact Mimi’s. Gifts for the attendees: Ideally we will use the same items we gave at the 30th anniversary: notepad, bookmark, label, and pen. Darian will check storage for the desired items. Options for the chicken selections were discussed and one was selected. Also, Darian will ask about having mashed potatoes instead of rice. At our last sit down dinner, we had nice little tags to identify each attendees meal choice - Sheila provided these. We asked if she could do it again. Darian asked the Wedgewood if it would be okay to bring in chocolate covered strawberries and they were okay with it. It was a friend of Jann H’s who was going to provide them. To take advantage of the 2/$45 price on the dinner, it is okay for members to double up when they register. Price for February: 2 for $45 1 for $28, whether member or guest $38 for everyone after 5:00 the Monday before the meeting Promoting the professional and personal growth of Ventura County women through education, mutual support, and sharing of resources Shirley Lorraine made a motion that at the BNI mixer on January 29th we have a door prize for the cost of one dinner at the February meeting. Sheila Lowe seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Jim N. will be in charge of taking the door prize certificate to the mixer. In March our speaker will be our own Jann Huling who will talk about disaster preparedness. Jim Nicoll and DSI Insurance will sponsor. April’s speaker will be Dr. Kalee Pasek, a veterinarian who will talk about healthy pets. We need a sponsor. In May, we’ll have Holly Gene Leffler to talk about the history of hats. All attendees will be invited to wear hats to the meeting. We need a sponsor for this date. June is installation of the new board. We still need a speaker and a sponsor. We discussed the salad choices provided by the Wedgewood. All agreed there was no need to have both potato and pasta salad, so Darian will ask that these be rotated. Finance – Shirley Jones-Snyder Shirley put together a new list of the membership, with anniversary and expiration dates that are current as of this meeting date. It showed we have 105 members on the books. We discussed meeting front table operations, and how to handle members and guests who claim to have paid, but Shirley has not received notification from PayPal by the time she leaves to come to the meeting. If they’ve registered right before coming to the meeting, there is no way for Shirley to know. It was suggested she inform them at the door that she has not received notification yet, so could they write a check, and she will not cash it when she sees their notification. The Finance Director role is very time consuming and Shirley J needs help. But she has not had success getting interest in a committee. It’s hoped that at the new member breakfast we will be able to spark some interest in all the committees. Hospitality – Jann Huling No report, as Jann was absent. It was noted however, that she did a great job generating interest for table hostessing from members who were interested but had never been asked. Special Events – Bernadette Cardenas Mary expressed concern for Bernadette - with recent health issues, the role may be overwhelming for her. Mary will talk to Bernadette and update the leadership team. Member at Large – Rita Frayer and Jim Nicoll Jim did an inventory of the storage unit and ran through the numbers of several items. We only have a few of the business card holders. Rita will get a quote from Sue Gary for new card holders, and ask about getting them in magenta to complement the new logo. Communications – Michelle McConica Michelle sent notes to several members who’ve been missing. We discussed where in the VC Star we wanted our notice - in clubs or business? Ideally, both. She is also posting in facebook and on LinkedIn. We discussed whether we’re bombarding the members and others on the vertical response list with emails, including Jann H’s. It was decided Promoting the professional and personal growth of Ventura County women through education, mutual support, and sharing of resources to ask Jann just to solicit table hostesses. Mary G. will chat with Jann. At a previous meeting the board had decided we would have board members at each table invite someone to be table hostess, but in light of the amazing job Jann did with her open solicitation, all agreed she had the right idea. President – Mary Gabriels Mary had a letter informing us that our General Liability and E&O insurance is coming up for renewal. This letter went to Shirley J. There is a Women’s Festival coming up on February 8th, in case anyone wants to attend. In the past VCPWN has had a table there, but we won’t be doing it this year. Mary expressed that she would like to finish anything that started in her year. This includes the fun group survey. She needs the lists of who expressed interest in the various topics. Sue O. will send to Mary. For the January meeting, she spent $16 on the table centerpieces. Shirley J said we made $138. For the February meeting, she is working on getting nice restaurants around the county to provide gift certificates. The meeting adjourned at 8:03 p.m. The next meeting will be on February 21st. Respectfully submitted, Sue Osborn, Recording Secretary Promoting the professional and personal growth of Ventura County women through education, mutual support, and sharing of resources
