VENTURA COUNTY PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S NETWORK Post Office Box 6329 Q Oxnard, CA 93031 Q (805) 656-6011 Q www.VCPWN.org Minutes VENTURA COUNTY PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S NETWORK LEADERSHIP TEAM RETREAT May 31, 2014 IN ATTENDANCE: Sue Osborn, Darian Taylor, Lynn Ryder, Shirley Jones Snyder, Linda Wall, Sheila Lowe, Jann Huling, Anna Kittleson Micki Rickard, Celia Cortez, Ferne Ross, Jim Nicoll Lynn is looking for sponsors for these meetings. In a discussion of the October Expo, Lynn suggested not limiting vendors to one business type. We made a profit at the first Expo, but the last one had a loss of approximately $400. It was decided not to incur the expense of bags or a big ticket grand prize this year. Vendor prizes suffice. A motion in this regard was made by Micki, seconded by Anna. The motion carried. Finance –Shirley Jones Snyder, Linda Wall Linda suggested that two board members should sign checks. Shirley will find out who is currently a signer on the checking account. Tabled for discussion until the July LT meeting. Shirley reviewed the last two years’ budget and reported that we came close to the projected figures. With all the free dinners we give out during the year, we operate at a small loss. Shirley volunteered to create and issue a certificate for the free dinner to help the accounting. A motion was made by Lynn and seconded by Ferne to allow each LT member to “sponsor” or suggest a free dinner once during the year. The motion carried. President Sue Osborn called the meeting to order at 6:18 pm. President - Sue Osborn The LT reviewed the current MOP and adjustments were made to some duties. Sue will check on these items: • VCPWN status with the Women’s Legacy Fund, of which we are a founding member. • VCPWN CA ID number, which Shirley will provide. Immediate Past President – Darian Taylor Discussion of dinner prices resulted in a motion by Darian and seconded by Ferne to increase the LT and Navigator prices by $1, to $23. The motion carried. Pres Elect/Programs – Lynn Ryder Several prospective speakers were discussed. Current scheduled speakers: July – Maggie Dennison, How to do a One-Minute Commercial August – Linda and Brent Anderson – Single mother raising autistic son (need title), unintentional humor. Secretary/Web Manager –Sheila Lowe Sheila will get a quote from webmaster Rick Taylor to add a birthdate to the online membership application. 1 Tabletop drawings are doing well. Anna will request a quote from her florist friend for centerpieces. It was suggested that gmail accounts be created for each board and committee position (e.g., [email protected]) so that the accounts can move with the position whenever there is a change of LT member. Special Events – Celia Cortez Discussion about the New Member Breakfast: The breakfasts have not produced the desired results. Anna suggested an after work event. Jann would like to see events hosted at members’ businesses. Membership – Jann Huling Ferne suggested finding ways to give members more recognition. Jann suggested sending birthday cards to members, possibly via member Teri Domier, a SendOutCards rep. New business card holders were distributed. Celia and Jann suggested putting all member business cards in the holders for new members. Celia suggested acknowledging committee members who make special contributions. One idea was to give a gift card or a discount on dinner. Communications - Ferne Ross All LT members were requested to post meeting notices on their Facebook pages each month. Ferne will highlight members on the VCPWN Facebook page. She will check with her daughter, a PR professional, for any suggestions. Member at Large – Jim Nicoll Jim will continue to help out as needed. Networking- Anna Kittleson It was decided to return to the former practice of assigning buddies to new members in order to make them feel more welcome and get them involved. Anna and Jann will coordinate. We will continue to sell tickets for door prize drawings and will regularly announce the opportunity for anyone attending (or just members?) to bring a door prize. Everyone who brings a prize will have the opportunity to announce their name and business, and the item they’ve brought. This is not a commercial, but a simple announcement. Door prizes will be placed on a table behind the podium. Old Business – New Business – Sue asked everyone to think about their goals for the next year, to be discussed at the July LT meeting. Gwenlyn Norton wants to divest herself of VCPWN historical items, such as old Focal Points newsletters, which she has been storing in her garage. We will arrange to move the binders she has to our storage facility. The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 p.m. Hospitality – Micki Rickard It was suggested that LT members double as table hostesses.
