Bray (6.8 apg) Assists Leader John Caleb Sanders (4.1 apg) • Princeton is off to its best start since the 1997-98 season, a fact that will remain regardless of Saturday's outcome, whether 10-2 or 9-3 through 12 contests. The '97-'98 team had Mitch Henderson as a senior and was ranked No. 17 in the nation by the AP by the time it had played 12 games (11-1). • Princeton is as good as 10-2 through 12 games for the 13th time in 114 seasons of varsity basketball. If Princeton defeats Liberty, it would be as good as 11-2 through 13 games for the 12th time in program history. Just two of those previous 11 times came in the last 46 seasons (after 1967), in 1990-91 and 1997-98. • It's not quite oldest and youngest between Princeton and Liberty, but it's close. Princeton is the fourth-oldest college in the U.S., chartered in 1746. Liberty is among the youngest in Division I, as Princeton was already 225 years old when Liberty was founded in 1971. • This will be the first time an Ivy League team has ventured to Liberty for men's basketball and just the second game for Liberty against an Ivy League opponent at any location. The Flames trumped Yale 67-55 on Jan. 8, 2000 in New Haven. • Princeton is 3-1 all-time against Big South teams at the time of the game. The most recent game was Princeton's only loss to a Big South foe, 69-67 to Presbyterian early in the 2010-11 season. All four of the games took place on neutral courts, including a 1990 game against Coastal Carolina in Cleveland, a 1993 game against UMBC in Oakland, a 2006 game against VMI in Columbus, Ohio and the game against Presbyterian at James Madison. • Speaking of the Presbyterian game, it was part of Princeton's last visit to Virginia. The Tigers have played 10 games all-time in the state and hold an 8-2 record. 3 of 11 1/1/14 6:29 PM http://www.goprincetontigers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?PRINT... The three-game trip to face James Madison, Bucknell and Presbyterian at JMU in Nov. 2010 was one of two visits all-time to western Virginia and the only visit to the state after 1976. The other came in 1967 as the Tigers opened the NCAA Tournament with a 68-57 win over West Virginia hosted by Virginia Tech. • Virginia is the last non-Ivy League state in which Princeton will play during the regular season and one of 11 states in total for the Tigers this season. Princeton has played in 41 states all-time, missing only Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas, Arkansas, Mississippi, and one that the Tigers traverse every year to or from Dartmouth, Vermont. • Princeton just closed a calendar year in which it went 22-6. The Tigers have started years positively as well of late, as their first games of 2011 (home Marist), 2012 (at Florida A&M) and 2013 (at Elon) were all Ws. • Almost a year to the day after doing so, Princeton will head south for its final pre-Ivy League game once again. On Jan. 5, 2013, it was at Elon that Princeton posted a 74-64 win before sustaining the momentum for a 12-point home win over Penn. • Princeton's opponents have scored 33 or more points by halftime four times. Two of the games were the losses to Butler and Portland, and the other two against Lafayette and Penn State became wins only after second-half comebacks. Princeton is 7-0 when opponents score below 70 points and 3-2 when opponents reach 70. • Princeton is scoring at a rate unseen in more than 40 years so far, as the team's average of 74.4 ppg is its highest through 12 games since the 1971-72 season (82.2 ppg). That season is also the last time Princeton scored at least 66 points in each of its first 12 games, as it has done this season. • The Tigers have upped their point total from first halves to second halves in eight of the 12 games this season. Princeton is 8-0 when leading at the half this season and has won 20 straight such games. In the other four games, the Tigers rallied to win at Penn State and against Lafayette but came up 14 points short against Portland and by one possession at Butler. • Princeton and Liberty have no common opponents this season. • Princeton is having its coldest two-game stretch from 3-point range, going .317 (13-41) against Portland and Kent State. However, the Tigers haven't shot below 40 percent from 3-point range in any three-game stretch this season. • Through Tuesday's games, Princeton led the Ivy League in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3) and 3-pointers per game (10.5). Princeton was second in turnover margin (+0.92, Harvard +2.67) and 3-point FG percentage (.389, Columbia .407). • Princeton doesn't have a player in the Ivy League's official top 12 in points per game, but that figures to change by the end of January. If T.J. Bray plays in Princeton's next four games, he'll make the 75 percent cutoff by the Harvard game on Jan. 31. Through Tuesday's games, Bray's present per-game average of 16.4 would be good for fourth in the Ivy behind Sean McGonagill of Brown (18.6), Justin Sears of Yale (17.3) and Nolan Cressler of Cornell (16.7). Bray would lead the league in assists at 6.8 apg if he met the minimum, as Harvard's Siyani Chambers (5.1 apg) is credited as the league's current leader in assists per game. • Ben Hazel led the Ivy in free throw percentage at .900 through Tuesday's games. • Princeton is on pace to obliterate the program record for 3-pointers made in a season. The 1997-98 team made 265, and at Princeton's present clip of 10.5 threes per game, with 16 more regular-season games to play, the projected final regular-season number stands at 294. • Princeton has more than doubled its opponents in the number of 3-pointers made this season, canning 126 to 61 for its foes. The Tigers have also tried significantly more than their opponents, though not quite twice as many, at 324-182. • Of Princeton's 624 field goal attempts this season, 324, or 51.9 percent, have been from beyond the arc. Of the nine players who have appeared in at least eight games this season, five have more tries from beyond the arc than from inside, including T.J. Bray, Will Barrett, Ben Hazel, Spencer Weisz and Chris Clement. • Princeton's only two defeats this season were when the opponent made more 3-pointers than Princeton, against Butler (eight for Princeton, nine for Butler) and Portland (five for Princeton, eight for Portland). Those two games are also the only two this season in which Princeton didn't have at least 10 assists, getting nine in each game. • Princeton is 8-0 this season when holding opponents below 37 percent from beyond the arc and 2-2 when foes hit at least 37 percent of their treys. • Rebounding has not been much of a predictor of victory for Princeton this season. Princeton has won the rebounding battle in 7 of 12 games this season and is 5-2 in those contests. Princeton is 5-0 when losing the rebounding stat. • Princeton returns nearly 75 percent of its scoring from a year ago despite graduating reigning Ivy Player of the Year Ian Hummer ’13. The team also returns 71 percent of its starts and 67 percent of its minutes, with Denton Koon, T.J. Bray, Will Barrett and Hans Brase all having started at least 18 games last season. • 36.8 percent of Princeton's points this season have been scored by players who weren't on the 2012-13 roster, including rookies Spencer Weisz (9.2 ppg), Peter Miller (2.5 ppg) and Steven Cook (1.3 ppg), junior Ben Hazel (9.9 ppg) and senior Jimmy Sherburne (7.1 ppg). Hazel and Sherburne took the 2012-13 season off from Princeton. • Seven players (Bray, Brase, Koon, Hazel, Barrett, Weisz, Sherburne) have played 88.7 percent of the minutes this season and have scored 92.3 percent of the points. • Princeton has trailed in the second half in seven games this season: Butler, Lafayette, Bucknell, Rutgers, Penn State, Portland and Kent State, including by double figures at Butler (13), Penn State (20) and Portland (18). The Tigers came within a final possession at Butler and came all the way back to win at Penn State, though Princeton never mounted a sustained rally against Portland. • The Tigers have a six-member freshman class and, as of the FDU game, all six of them have seen game action, including Henry Caruso, Khyan Rayner, Hashim Moore, Steven Cook, Peter Miller and Spencer Weisz. Miller has played in 11 of 12 games, and Weisz has started six contests while playing in all 12. 4 of 11 1/1/14 6:29 PM http://www.goprincetontigers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?PRINT... • Liberty made news last season by going on a tear when it counted most. The Flames started 0-8 and had never won more than three straight games in the regular season, heading into the Big South Tournament with an 11-20 record. Liberty was the fifth of six seeds in the North Division, and after knocking off South Division fourth seed Coastal Carolina 78-61, the Flames dumped each of the two top divisional seeds, High Point and Charleston Southern, as well as the the South Division second seed, Gardner Webb. The Charleston Southern win, 87-76, sent the Flames to the Big Dance, where they came up short 73-72 to North Carolina A&T in one of the two First Four games between 16 seeds. • Liberty was forecasted second of six teams in the Big South's North Division this season behind High Point. • Five of Liberty's top six scorers return from last season, losing only Tavares Speaks and his third-leading 13.2 ppg. John Caleb Sanders, a 6-0 senior who led the team with 14.4 ppg last season, is second on this year's team with an 11.3 ppg average. • Four Flames have started at least 12 of the team's 14 games and eight in all have started a game. Antwan Burrus (13.9 ppg) is the team's scoring leader and is a 6-6 redshirt senior, having missed last season due to injury. John Caleb Sanders (11.3 ppg), 5-11 senior Davon Marshall (10.5 ppg) and 6-9 junior Tomasz Gielo (9.1 ppg) are the others who have started at least 12 games this season. • Antwan Burrus saw his streak of scoring in double figures end at nine straight games as he was a bucket short last time out at Delaware with eight points. • Ethan Layer, a 6-1 sophomore and son of the team's head coach, is averaging 12.3 ppg over the last six after averaging 7.3 ppg over the first eight. Conversely, 5-11 senior Davon Marshall has averaged 6.9 ppg over his last seven games played (missed one game) after averaging 14.8 ppg over the first six games. • Joe Retic, a 6-3 sophomore, scored in double figures in two of the last three games after not having a double-figure point total in any game over the team's first 11 contests. • Liberty is outshooting its opponents .459 to .421 this season but is allowing opponents to shoot just .322 from beyond the arc. Only three times in 14 games this season has Liberty allowed its opponents to shoot better than 35.0 percent from distance in a game, against Virginia (9-21, .419), Austin Peay (6-10, .600) and Furman (10-19, .526). Princeton has shot better than 35.0 percent from distance in eight of 12 games this season. • Liberty has won the rebounding battle in nine straight games and is 5-4 in those contests. The last team to outrebound Liberty was Virginia, 35-28 in a 75-53 win back on Nov. 23. • Liberty has hit at at least a 40 percent clip from the field in 11 of 14 games this season. The Flames like the 3-pointer, though not quite as much as the Tigers, taking an average of 16 a game. Heading into the Delaware game last time out, Liberty had hit at a .472 clip (25-53) from distance over its previous three games. Against the Blue Hens, Liberty was just 2-14 (.143) from 3-point range. • Liberty coach Dale Layer is in his fifth season skippering the team. Last season's NCAA Tournament appearance was his second as a Division I head coach. Layer took Colorado State to the dance in 2003, where the Rams lost to Duke in the first round. He also took Queens University of Charlotte to two Division II NCAA Tournaments in 1996 and 1998. Layer is the eighth man to hold the head coaching position at Liberty since the program began play in 1972. • Liberty has been to the NCAA Division I Tournament three times, twice prior to last season in 2004 and 1994. The first two were Round of 64 defeats, to North Carolina and then Saint Joseph's. • Liberty has rebounded from losing five straight and standing at 1-5 after six games to winning five of its last eight. Mitch Henderson '98 is in his third season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 47-25. Under Henderson, Princeton is 24-6 at home, 20-8 in the Ivy League, and 13-1 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 36-8 when leading at the half under Henderson and has won 20 straight such games. Henderson is aiming to become the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III ’88 to have winning seasons in each of his first three campaigns. He would be the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Luehring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff ’44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III ’88 (2000-04). Henderson is in ninth place on the Princeton all-time wins list, with predecessor Sydney Johnson '97 in eighth with 66 wins over four seasons. With 37 wins through his first two seasons, Henderson was fourth on the list of wins for Princeton coaches through their first two campaigns, behind Carmody (51), van Breda Kolff (39), and Carril (39). 5 of 11 1/1/14 6:29 PM http://www.goprincetontigers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?PRINT... Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now fifth, having been surpassed by one of his players, Ian Hummer '13. Henderson graduated fifth in career assists (kept since 1974-75) and is now eighth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, current San Diego Padre Will Venable '05 and Marcus Schroeder '10. Henderson is one of seven Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond), Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State). The Tigers are second only to North Carolina (eight) in alumni as current D-I head coaches. Prior to Princeton, Henderson coached at Northwestern for 11 seasons under his final head coach at Princeton, Bill Carmody, from 2000-11. 24 Will Barrett • Sr. • F • 6-10 • 197 Hartsville, Pa. • Central Bucks South Already achieved his second-highest scoring season in the program, with 139 points; scored 251 last year as a junior ... 11.6 ppg average is higher than any season-ending average at Princeton (9.3 ppg in 2012-13) ... missed most of the 2011-12 season due to injury and retained a year of eligibility ... hit .516 from beyond the arc last season (48-93), good enough to register as ESPN's national leader in 3FG percentage but did not meet the NCAA minimum (needed to make 2.5/game, or 68) ... scored 24 points at Penn State to tie a career high and had 16 of the team's 25 points as the Tigers whittled the deficit from 20 to three after the midway point of the second half ... 22 points against Lafayette led the team and were just two off his career high ... has had six double-figure scoring games so far this season Season Highs 2013-14 Blocks 3 vs. FAMU (11/10/13) Career Highs 2009-14 Blocks 3, last vs. FAMU (11/10/13) Points 24 at Penn State (12/14/13) Field Goals 8 at Penn State (12/14/13) Points 24, last at Penn State (12/14/13) Field Goals 8, last at Penn State (12/14/13) Rebounds 7, last vs. Kent State (12/31/13) 3-Point Field Goals 6 at Penn State (12/14/13) Rebounds 10 vs. Penn (1/12/13) 3-Point Field Goals 6 at Penn State (12/14/13) Assists 3 vs. FDU (12/7/13) Free Throws 5 at Butler (11/16/13) Assists 4, last vs. Yale (3/8/13) Free Throws 9 at Buffalo (11/10/12) Steals 2 at Butler (11/16/13) Minutes 30 at Penn State (12/14/13) Steals 3, last vs. Cornell (2/1/13) Minutes 38 vs. Dartmouth (3/2/13) 30 Hans Brase • So. • F • 6-8 • 231 Clover, S.C. • Hill School (Pa.)
