THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION
The academic procession is one of the oldest traditions of colleges and universities throughout the world. The
caps, gowns and hoods which are seen in the procession of the commencement ceremony are an inheritance
from the university scholar of more than six centuries ago.
During the rise of universities, the ordinary dress of the scholar, whether teacher or student, was the dress of
a cleric or clerk. This dress, a long gown and sleeveless tunic or, in winter, a long full cloak to which a
shoulder length cape was attached, has evolved into a present day academic wardrobe.
The various colors had particular symbolism in the medieval university, although there was little uniformity
from one institution to another. The definite association of certain colors to certain ranks and disciplines was
standardized in the United States in 1895. The regulations prescribe the style of the gowns, based on the
level of degree and the colors representing the fields of learning.
The colorful hood, which indicates the discipline and the institution conferring the degree, was originally worn
over the head, but during the 16th century, caps replaced the hood, and the hood was worn draped over the
shoulder. As the caps became larger, they were stiffened with boards and evolved into the present day mortar
board.
The tassel has evolved from a tuft on the top of the medieval scholar’s skull cap. In current usage, a gold
bullion tassel denotes a doctoral degree.
