Liberty LADY FLAMES
(6-6, 1-0 Big South)
Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 7 p.m.
Today’s Game
Liberty (6-6, 1-0 Big South) will face a strong test in its Big South Conference home
opener Saturday at 7 p.m., as fellow conference unbeaten High Point (7-6, 2-0 Big South)
visits the Vines Center. The Lady Flames and Panthers were the top two teams in the Big
South preseason poll.
The “Starting Five” - Today’s Top Storylines
1) Saturday’s game will be a marquee early-season matchup within the Big South Conference. Liberty was tabbed the preseason conference favorite, with High Point coming
in second in the voting. Both teams are off to strong starts in Big South play. The Lady
Flames posted a 76-68 win at Radford in their conference opener, while the Panthers
have won their two Big South tilts by an average of 31.0 ppg.
2) Liberty will attempt to win its Big South home opener for the 11th time in the last 12
years. The Lady Flames had won 10 straight conference home lid-lifters before Radford
posted a 62-53 win at the Vines Center in Liberty’s initial home conference game a year
ago.
3) The Lady Flames have defeated the Panthers the last four times High Point has visited the Vines Center, but last season’s matchup on Feb. 5, 2011 went down to the wire.
Liberty escaped with a 58-57 victory as Devon Brown rejected Erin Reynolds’ attempted
layup in the waning seconds.
4) Liberty redshirt senior Avery Warley can make some history on Saturday. She enters
the contest with 1,031 rebounds, meaning that three more boards will enable her to break
Katie Feenstra’s program record of 1,033 career rebounds. Warley averaged 14.0 rpg in
three meetings with the Panthers last year.
5) Warley will have plenty of competition for rebounds in the form of High Point’s 6-4
sophomore center, Cheyenne Parker. Warley is ranked No. 9 nationally with 10.8 rpg,
while Parker sits No. 12 in the nation with 10.6 rpg.

Notes and Anecdotes
-- Liberty was picked to finish first in the Big South preseason poll, while High Point was
picked second. During the very early stages of conference play, both teams are still undefeated, with the Lady Flames owning a 1-0 Big South conference record and the Panthers
at 2-0.
-- Liberty and High Point both faced VCU and Virginia during the non-conference slate.
The Lady Flames dropped both games, while the Panthers defeated VCU and lost to
Virginia.
-- Jennifer Hoover is facing the Lady Flames for the first time as a head coach. She went
1-1 against Liberty during her time as an assistant coach at Virginia (2003-07).
-- Saturday’s game will feature the top three active career scorers in the Big South Conference, including High Point’s Shamia Brown (1,252 career points) and the Liberty duo of
Avery Warley (1,193) and Devon Brown (1,080).
-- Two of the nation’s top 12 rebounders will square off, as Liberty’s Warley ranks No. 9
nationally with 10.8 rpg and High Point’s Cheyenne Parker is No. 12 at 10.6 rpg. During
last season’s three meetings against one another, Warley averaged 19.3 ppg and 14.0
rpg, while Parker posted 8.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg. Warley has some good memories of playing
against High Point, as she scored her 1,000th point against the Panthers on March 12,
2011 and has posted 28 and 26-point games against High Point during her career.

-- Devon Brown led Liberty’s attack with 19 points, moving past Brenda Gunsallus and into
12th place in program history with 1,080 career points.
-- Warley also corralled 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and the
36th of her career. As a result, she moved into second place on Liberty’s career rebounding chart with 1,031 caroms. Warley needs just three more boards to break Katie Feenstra’s program record of 1,033 rebounds.
Tough Time in Tight Tilts
-- Liberty’s 76-68 win at Radford on Dec. 31 was the Lady Flames’ first victory this season
in a game decided by 10 or fewer points. Liberty is now 1-3 in such contests.
-- Last season, the Lady Flames were 8-8 in games decided by 10 or fewer points. One of
those wins was a 58-57 victory over High Point at the Vines Center on Feb. 5, 2011. The
Panthers had a chance to win the game, but Devon Brown blocked Erin Reynolds’ layup
attempt in the closing seconds.
Finding Their Touch From the Foul Line
-- Liberty only ranks eighth in the Big South in free throw percentage at .630 for the season. However, the Lady Flames have shot well from the foul line in the second half of their
last two games (at Radford and Richmond), making 28 of their 38 attempts for a .737 clip.
-- Leading the charge is Avery Warley, who is 11-for-11 on free throws in the second half
of the last two games.
Early Tests
-- Liberty, which was picked first in the Big South preseason poll for the 14th time in the
last 15 years, will face off with two of its top projected contenders right off the bat in conference play.
-- The Lady Flames opened their Big South slate at Radford (No. 3 in the preseason poll)
on Dec. 31 and are now returning home to face No. 2 selection High Point on Saturday.
