Richmond SPIDERS
(8-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10)
Richmond, Va. - Robins Center - 4 p.m.
Today’s Game
Liberty (5-5) will play its final non-conference game of the 2011-12 regular season and its
last pre-Christmas contest Tuesday at 4 p.m., when the Lady Flames travel to Richmond
(8-2). Tipoff inside the Robins Center is set for 4 p.m., as the Commonwealth rivals face
off for the first time since Jan. 5, 2008.
The “Starting Five” - Today’s Top Storylines
1) Liberty won its most recent matchup against Richmond, notching a 45-38 win inside
the Vines Center on Jan. 5, 2008. However, the Lady Flames have traditionally struggled
against the Spiders, who own a 19-3 advantage in the all-time series. Liberty’s only win at
Richmond in program history, a 94-75 decision on Dec. 4, 1999, was Carey Green’s first
road triumph as Liberty’s head coach.
2) The Lady Flames have traditionally fared well in their final game before the start of Big
South Conference play. Under head coach Carey Green, Liberty is 10-2 in such contests,
including a 73-53 win over Atlantic 10 foe La Salle last season, on Dec. 29, 2010.
3) Tuesday’s game will be Liberty’s sixth contest against a Virginia opponent in its first
11 outings of the 2011-12 season. It will also be the Lady Flames’ third matchup with a
Richmond-based squad (also VCU and Virginia Union). Moreover, it will be the second
straight year Liberty has played in Richmond on the Tuesday before Christmas. Last year,
the Lady Flames recorded a 59-57 win at VCU on Dec. 21, 2010.
4) Both teams have noteworthy stats regarding free throws. Liberty attempted a program
and Vines Center-record 51 foul shots in its 82-37 win over Virginia Union on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Spiders lead the nation in free throw percentage at 82.6 percent.
5) With a huge game, Avery Warley could become Liberty’s all-time rebounding leader
on Tuesday. The redshirt senior has 1,012 career boards, leaving her 22 caroms shy of
eclipsing Katie Feenstra’s mark. Warley’s career high is 21 rebounds, set on Feb. 28,
2011 at Charleston Southern.

Notes and Anecdotes
-- Liberty and Richmond have played three common opponents this season--UNC Greensboro, VCU and Virginia. Liberty is 1-2 in those contests (win vs. UNC Greensboro), while
the Spiders are 2-1 (wins vs. UNC Greensboro and VCU).
-- This will be the third game Liberty has played against a team from Richmond in 2011-12,
including its second contest in a row. The Lady Flames just beat Virginia Union on Thursday, 82-37. On Nov. 15, Liberty dropped a 52-47 home decision to VCU.
-- Liberty and Richmond have not faced off in women’s basketball since Jan. 5, 2008. None
of either team’s current players appeared in that game. However, about two months later,
Hidden Valley defeated Waynesboro, 59-45, in the 2008 VHSL Group AA state championship game. Hidden Valley was coached by current Richmond assistant Mike McGuire,
and Spiders senior guard Abby Oliver tallied 16 points for the Titans. Liberty redshirt junior
Devon Brown paced Waynesboro with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
-- Richmond sophomore guard Becca Wann is an All-American in soccer and has faced
the Lady Flames on the soccer pitch. This season, she assisted on the Spiders’ gamewinning goal in their 1-0 victory over Liberty on Sept. 11.
-- Liberty’s only road victory against Richmond in program history came on Dec. 4, 1999,
a 94-75 win in the opening round of the Wachovia Women’s Invitational. That was Carey
Green’s first road triumph as the Lady Flames’ head coach.

career (also Feb. 22 & 27, 2010). Has never tallied three straight 20-point outings. If she

program history and the fourth player in Big South history to reach 1,000 career rebounds.

State, grabbing her 398th offensive board.
-- Currently ranks No. 8 nationally in rebounds (11.1 rpg).
-- Her perfect 8-for-8 field goal shooting at North Carolina A&T on Nov. 18 marked the fifth
time in her career she has made all of her field goals when attempting at least five shots.
Her career-best performance was a 9-for-9 effort in a home win over Charleston Southern
on Feb. 22, 2010.
-- Made 12 straight field goal attempts, spanning the second half of the VCU contest on
Nov. 15 and the first half of the Nov. 22 game against Virginia-Wise.
