Virginia CAVALIERS
(7-2, 0-0 ACC)
Charlottesville, Va. - John Paul Jones Arena - 7 p.m.
Today’s Game
Two days before final exams begin at Liberty, the Lady Flames (3-4) will face a stern test
on the hardwood, Wednesday evening. Liberty will travel north on Route 29 to face Virginia (7-2), with tipoff set for 7 p.m. inside John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers, who were
ranked inside the Top 25 earlier this season, are 4-0 at home, including a 69-64 overtime
win over No. 3 Tennessee on Nov. 20.
The “Starting Five” - Today’s Top Storylines
1) Something has to give at John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday. Liberty has played
well in its previous visits to the facility, owning a 2-1 record. In fact, the Lady Flames were
the first visiting basketball team (men’s or women’s) ever to win at John Paul Jones Arena.
Meanwhile, Virginia is 4-0 on its home court this year, highlighted by a 69-64 overtime
triumph over No. 3 Tennessee.
2) Liberty will need to find a way to score against Virginia’s staunch defense. The Cavaliers have held seven out of nine opponents below 60 points this season. Liberty is 0-3 in
2011-12 when failing to reach the 60-point mark.
3) Wednesday’s game will mark the Lady Flames’ first contest against an ACC opponent
since Dec. 29, 2009. That day, Virginia defeated Liberty, 63-54, in the championship game
of the Marriott Cavalier Classic.
4) Liberty redshirt junior Devon Brown, who grew up about 30 miles from Charlottesville in
Waynesboro, Va., could achieve a career milestone on Wednesday. She enters the game
needing only seven points to become the 14th Lady Flame ever to score 1,000 career
points.
5) Wednesday’s game will mark the first time that Liberty has faced a Virginia squad not
coached by Debbie Ryan. The first-ever meeting between the Lady Flames and Cavaliers
(Jan. 30, 1982) came during Ryan’s fifth season at the helm at Virginia. Her first year with
the Cavaliers (1977-78) was Liberty University’s seventh year of existence.

Lady Flames became the first visiting basketball team (men’s or women’s) ever to win at
the facility, posting a 75-71 victory over the Cavaliers on Nov. 20, 2006. Liberty then went
1-1 to finish second behind Virginia at the 2009 Marriott Cavalier Classic.
-- Adding in the Liberty men’s basketball team’s 86-82 win over Virginia at John Paul Jones
Arena on Nov. 25, 2008, the Flames and Lady Flames are a combined 3-1 at the facility.
-- Liberty’s current #40 (Devon Brown) will have a chance to score her 1,000th point
just 30 miles from her hometown of Waynesboro, Va., as she enters Wednesday’s game
seven points shy of the milestone.
-- Liberty’s previous #40 (Megan Frazee) enjoyed arguably the best game of her career at

Competing Against the Commonwealth
-- Liberty is 1-2 versus Virginia opponents this season, including a victory over VirginiaWise and losses to VCU and James Madison.
-- Beginning with Wednesday’s game, four of the Lady Flames’ next five contests are
against in-state opposition.
-- Liberty will not travel outside the Commonwealth of Virginia again until Jan. 14, 2012,
when the Lady Flames play a Big South game at Coastal Carolina.
Fastest to 1,000
Devon Brown needs just seven more points to become the 14th player in program history
to score 1,000 career points. She has played 64 games for the Lady Flames and has a
chance to become one of the fastest Liberty players ever to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Here are the five Lady Flames who got to 1,000 points in the fewest games.
Elena Kisseleva - 47 games
Brenda Gunsallus - 50 games
Megan Frazee - 58 games
Katie Feenstra - 64 games
Sharon Wilkerson - 66 games
Following in #40’s Footsteps?
Devon Brown has a chance to become the second Lady Flame to score her 1,000th career point on an ACC court. Megan Frazee, who wore uniform No. 40 before Brown began
her career, tallied her 1,000th point at North Carolina’s Carmichael Auditorium on Dec. 30,
2007, in an 88-67 loss to the Tar Heels.
Painting a Masterpiece
Liberty is outscoring opponents in points in the paint this season, 34.3-18.9 on average.

-- The Lady Flames won the rebounding battle, 44-41, and have now outrebounded 34
straight opponents dating back to last season.
-- Liberty committed a season-low 14 turnovers, but the Dukes converted those miscues
into 20 points.
-- The Lady Flames’ bench had scored more than 20 points in every game this season
before Thursday, when LaKendra Washington’s six tallies were the only scoring Liberty
got from its reserves.
-- Avery Warley’s team-high 18 points put her over the 1,100-point mark for her career.
She now has 1,107 points and needs 14 more markers to join Liberty’s all-time top 10 list.
-- Devon Brown came back after a two-game absence to score 13 points. The redshirt
junior is now just seven points shy of 1,000 for her career.
-- Warley and Brown combined to shoot 9-of-11 from the free throw line, helping the Lady
Flames finish at a season-best 78.6 percent (11-of-14) as a team.
-- The coaches and players (on their shooting shirts) wore red ribbons to memorialize the
death of Devon Brown’s mother, Jennifer Brown, on Nov. 22.
