Liberty LADY FLAMES
(1-0, 0-0 Big South)
Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 7 p.m.
Today’s Game
Liberty (1-0) will welcome VCU (0-1) to the Vines Center Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the Lady
Flames’ 2011-12 home opener. The first of 14 home games on this year’s schedule will
be a matchup between CollegeInsider.com Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 squads. VCU is
currently ranked No. 19 in the poll, with Liberty at No. 20.
The “Starting Five” - Today’s Top Storylines
1) Liberty will attempt to become the second straight Big South Conference team to defeat
VCU to open the season. High Point posted an 82-67 victory at VCU on Friday.
2) The Lady Flames will aim to improve to 11-2 in home openers under head coach Carey
Green. The only two opponents to spoil Liberty’s home opener during that time have been
Richmond schools (Richmond in 2000-01 and VCU in 2008-09).
3) Liberty has played VCU more often than any other non-conference opponent in program history. The Lady Flames have squared off with the Rams 32 times during their first
36 years of basketball, with VCU owning a 22-10 advantage. However, Liberty is 4-1 in
the teams’ last five meetings.
4) The road team has won each of the last two Liberty-VCU clashes by matching 59-57
scores.
5) The matchup between Liberty’s Avery Warley and VCU’s Courtney Hurt should be interesting to track. Last season, Hurt led the nation in both double-doubles (25) and rebounds
(12.4 rpg), while Warley tied for ninth nationally with 19 double-doubles and finished 14th
with 11.0 rpg.

-- The last two matchups between Liberty and VCU have both ended with a 59-57 score
and the visiting team has been victorious each time.
-- The contest will pit two Mid-Major Top 25 teams against one another, as VCU was
ranked No. 19 and Liberty No. 20 in the preseason poll.
-- VCU is playing its second straight Big South Conference opponent to start the season,
after losing an 82-67 home decision to High Point on Friday.
-- This is the second time in four years that Liberty has welcomed VCU to town for its
home opener. The Rams pulled out a 59-57 win at the Vines Center on Nov. 14, 2008 in
the opening round of the Preseason WNIT.
-- That game was Avery Warley’s collegiate debut, and she briefly gave Liberty a 57-56
lead by splitting a pair of free throws with 6.4 seconds left.
-- Last season, VCU’s Courtney Hurt led the nation with 25 double-doubles, while Avery
Warley tied for ninth with 19. Both are seeking their first double-double of the 2011-12
season. During last year’s matchup, Hurt finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds, while
Warley tallied five points and six boards.

A Look Back at Friday’s Season Opener at UNC Greensboro
-- Liberty’s 61-46 win at UNC Greensboro on Friday was the Lady Flames’ sixth win in
their last eight season openers.
-- Reagan Miller was the first Liberty freshman to start at point guard during the first game
of her career since Sarah Wilkerson on Nov. 23, 1996. She was also the first Lady Flame
to play 40 minutes since Amber Mays did so against No. 13/14 Auburn on Dec. 7, 2008.
-- Devon Brown came off the bench for just the fourth time in her career and scored a
game-high 20 points. She was the first Liberty reserve to score 20 points since LaKendra
Washington had 21 points at Lafayette on Nov. 28, 2009.
-- Avery Warley pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, moving into a tie for fifth place in
Big South Conference history. The redshirt senior has now totaled 915 career caroms.

-- Scored 21 of her 27 points after halftime, Jan. 14, 2011 at Longwood. It was the most
