Corpus Christi, Texas - American Bank Center - 1 p.m. (CST)
The Game
After a close loss at Missouri State, the Liberty men’s basketball team heads to Corpus
Christi, Texas for its final two contests in the Corpus Christi Challenge. The Flames begin
their stay in the Lone Star State with a meeting versus a fellow Commonwealth competitor
– the Hampton Pirates. Liberty looks to get back on the winning track and break up the 2-2
stalemate in the all-time series against the MEAC member. Meanwhile, Hampton hopes
to snap a four-game losing skid after winning its first two contests of the season. Tipoff in
the American Bank Center is slated for 1 p.m. (CST)/2 p.m. (EST).
Free Throw Frenzy – After going 12-of-12 at the charity stripe against Virginia, the Flames
did not fare as well at the foul line versus Missouri State, hitting 4-of-15 free throws on the
night. Liberty will look to turn things around at the line on Friday. Prior to its flawless effort
at John Paul Jones Arena, last Saturday, the last time Liberty had a better performance
from the line was in its 74-65 win over the Pirates (18-of-18, Dec. 17, 2011).
The Grand Marshall – After cracking Liberty’s Top 50 career scoring list, Tuesday, Davon
Marshall continues to chase the consecutive free throw record held by Seth Curry (41).
Marshall has currently made 31 consecutive free throws dating back to last season. Apart
from his performance at the foul line, Marshall could be chasing another record from
behind the three-point arc – his own. Through the first six games, last season, Marshall
made 17 treys, going on to claim the program’s single-season record with 107. How many
three-pointers does Marshall have through six games, this season? Seventeen.
Who’s Next? – After their meeting against the Pirates, the Flames are slated to face
either Arkansas-Pine Bluff or Sam Houston State, Saturday. A matchup with the Golden
Lions would be a first for Liberty. However, Dale Layer’s squad is familiar with Sam Houston State, having tasted defeat against the Bearkats, last season, in Huntsville, Texas,
64-50 (Nov. 20, 2012).

Hampton, 2-0 versus Howard, 2-0 versus Maryland-Eastern Shore, 1-2 against Morgan
State, 1-2 against Norfolk State and 0-1 versus North Carolina A&T.
- The Flames 2012-13 season came to an end at the hands of a MEAC opponent, as
North Carolina A&T edged Liberty in the NCAA First Four, 73-72 (March 19, 2013).
- Friday’s contest marks the first time the Flames and Pirates face off on a neutral court.
In the four previous meetings, two have taken place in the Vines Center and the other two
inside the Hampton University Convocation Center.
Last time versus Hampton (Dec. 17, 2011):
- Jesse Sanders led the Flames with 22 points, followed by John Caleb Sanders (14),
Antwan Burrus (12) and Tavares Speaks (12). John Caleb also had a team leading and
then career-high eight rebounds.
- Liberty was perfect from the free throw line that night, going 18-for-18 at the charity

the Corpus Christi Challenge. Squaring off with Missouri State, Tuesday night, inside
JQH Arena, the Bears (5-0) prevented the Flames (1-5) from connecting on a shot at the
buzzer to take the contest, 54-52.
- The contest ended in bizarre fashion. With the Bears up by two in the final seconds, JR
Coronado heaved up a desperation three-point attempt and was fouled on the play. The
senior missed all free throws, but an inadvertent whistle by the official created a jump ball
scenario with the possession arrow pointed to the Flames. Liberty had a chance for one final play. Davon Marshall attempted what would have been a game-winning three-pointer,
but the Bears defense stifled the shot, giving the home team their fifth straight win.
- Liberty finished the contest with 42.9 percent shooting from the field (21-of-49), compared to 33.9 percent (19-of-56) for the Bears. The Flames edged Missouri State from
three-point land, 18-15. Although Missouri State entered the contest 11th in the country
in three-point shooting percentage (45.6 percent), the Liberty defense held the Bears
to 22.7 percent from long range (5-of-22). Despite going 12-of-12 from the foul line at
Virginia on Saturday, Dale Layer’s squad went 4-for-16 at the charity stripe on the night.
- The Flames won the rebounding battle, 36-35. However, the Bears capitalized on points
off turnovers, outscoring Liberty, 18-0.
- Marshall led the Flames with a game-high 17 points, cracking the Top 50 on Liberty’s alltime scoring list. The Niagara Falls, N.Y. native now is now 49th with 579 tallies. Antwan
Burrus followed up with a 10-point performance. John Caleb Sanders finished with nine
points to break into to the Top 20 in Liberty scoring. Sanders now has 1,071 career points.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt ... Let’s do it again!
Liberty returns 12-of-14 players from its 2013 Big South Championship team, including nine players who were active along with Antwan Burrus, Ethan Layer and Wesley
Alcegaire (each redshirted 2012-13 season).
New Kids on the Block
Three new players join the Flames’ roster this season – Joe Retic, Ryan Kemrite and
Devon Pekas. Retic, a transfer from Owens Community College, averaged 11.3 points,
3.5 rebounds and a team-high 5.1 assists, last season. Look for the Indianapolis, Ind., native to see action at point guard and provide Liberty with solid defense.
Kemrite, a four-year letter winner for the SATCH Mavericks, averaged 22.6 points per
game, 7.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a senior. The home schooler also tallied 3,771
points during his high school career, leaving SATCH as its all-time leader in points scored,
three-pointers made and rebounds.
Pekas, a three-year letterwinner at Hawley High School in Hawley, Minn., averaged
19.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.4 blocks, and 2.7 steals per game his senior year.
Pekas was also a two-year captain, three-time all-conference selection and a member of
the Minnesota All-Star team.
Queens University of Charlotte Names Court in Honor of Layer
While Layer was in attendance with his former players from the 1989-90 Royals men’s
basketball team for a Queens University of Charlotte Hall of Fame induction ceremony,
(Nov. 1) the university unveiled a new name for the performance court at Curry Arena –
Dale Layer Court.
“To have the court named for me was almost surreal,” Layer said. “I’m very thankful
and humbled. It’s a special honor that I’m not sure I’m deserving of, but I’m very appreciative and thankful.”
In regards to the surprise, Layer added, “I didn’t know what was going to happen. My
parents and [Marquette head coach] Buzz Williams showed up unexpectedly. We had all
13 of our players come back, which was almost a miracle in itself. To have 25 years pass
and 13 players all willing and able to come back to Charlotte was a treat. I had the chance
to see a lot of people I spent a lot of years with.”
Layer, who was inducted into the Queens Hall of Fame in 2010 as an individual, is
credited with pioneering the men’s basketball program at Queens and helping the institution’s athletics department transition from an all-women’s department to a co-ed program.
At the helm of Queens men’s basketball, Layer posted winning records in eight of his nine
seasons, finishing with an all-time NCAA Division II record of 168-88 (.656).
Under the skipper’s guidance, the Royals captured two regular-season Carolinas Virginias Conference (CVC) Championships, three CVC Tournament titles and appeared in
the NCAA Division II Tournament twice (1996, 1998). During the Royals’ run in the 199596 campaign, Queens reached the Division II Sweet 16, finishing out the season with
25-6 posting. Layer’s players achieved a 100 percent graduation rate during his time at
Queens. While Layer served as director of athletics, Queens also earned its first Hawn
Cup, an all-sport conference award.

Notes from Liberty’s Big South Championship Run - March 5-10, 2013
First Round - March 5 - Liberty 78, Coastal Carolina 61
- Despite an early lead by Coastal Carolina, No. 5 North seed Liberty capitalized on the
Chanticleers’ 11:36 second-half field goal drought, which included a decisive 23-3 run, to
defeat the host team, 78-61, in the first round.
- The Flames’ tournament victory was their first since defeating Gardner-Webb in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Big South Championship, 88-77 (March 3, 2009). Liberty is now 4-0
all-time in postseason play against Coastal Carolina.
- Davon Marshall paced the Flames with a game-high 28 points, going 7-of-12 from the
field, including 5-of-7 from three-point land and 9-of-10 at the charity stripe. Marshall’s 28

10 tallies.
- Liberty shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field, including 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from

Coach’s Comments
“Devon is a point guard from Minnesota. He understands the game and has great length.
He has the ability to make his teammates better and make open shots. I’m encouraged
by what he can give our team at both ends of the floor and I think he’s going to be a welcomed addition.”

continue to grow. It will be a challenge for him in some ways, but he will never back down
from anything. He can shoot and rebound the basketball. He understands the game. He’s
one of those guys that I think has a great career in front of him.”

Coach’s Comments
“Joe is a junior college transfer with a great feel for the game. He will have a chance to
earn minutes at the point position and can defend two or three different spots. He can
score it, pass it and defend his position very well. He’s a guy we’re counting on to make
a major contribution.”
