Charlottesville, Va. - John Paul Jones Arena - 4 p.m.
The Game
The Liberty men’s basketball team (1-3) looks to halt its three-game losing skid, Saturday,
when it steps into John Paul Jones Arena to take on ACC member Virginia. Standing in
the way of the Flames is a 3-1 Cavaliers squad that is coming off a 67-42 home victory
over Navy on Tuesday. While the Cavaliers lead the all-time series, 6-2, Liberty is no
stranger to pulling off the upset inside JPJ, doing so with an 86-82 win over Virginia on
Nov. 25, 2008. Tipoff for Saturday’s contest, which is part of the Corpus Christi Challenge,
is slated for 4 p.m.
Keys to the Game
Liberty will need to get more firepower from its three-point shooters on Saturday. The
Flames currently average about five treys per game compared to three for the Cavaliers
(23.0 percent). However, Liberty, who shot 37.5 percent from the perimeter, last season,
is currently at 30.9 percent this year despite having many of its sharpshooters from the
2012-13 campaign back. Liberty also has a chance to capitalize at the foul line. The
Flames are shooting 74.2 percent from the charity stripe, while the Cavaliers are shooting
58.2 percent. Rebounding could be an issue for Liberty, as Virginia averages 42 boards
per game, while holding opponents to 26. The Cavaliers’ defense is holding opponents to
under 50 points. Liberty is averaging 71 points, but allowing 73.
News and Notes from Liberty vs. UNCW (Nov. 18, 2013)
- Looking to rebound from back-to-back losses, the Liberty men’s basketball team returned to the Vines Center, Monday night, playing host to UNCW. Led by 24 and 23-point
performances from Addison Spruill and Tanner Milson, the Seahawks took an advantage
early and didn’t look back, defeating the Flames, 87-76.
- Davon Marshall paced Liberty with a season-high 24 points, followed by John Caleb
Sanders who had 13. JR Coronado grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds to go along with
seven points. Joe Retic also had a season-best nine boards for the Flames.
- UNCW (3-2) shot 52.1 percent (25-of-48) on the night, while holding Liberty (1-3) to 41.8
percent (23-of-55). Each team posted six three-pointers on the night. Milson knocked
down the bulk of the Seahawks’ treys, going 5-of-7 from long distance. Marshall sank four
three-pointers for Liberty.

Notes and Anecdotes
- Before joining Tony Bennett’s staff at Virginia, current Cavaliers associate head coach
Ritchie McKay served as the head coach of the Flames for two seasons (2007-08, 200809). In his first season at Liberty, McKay led the Flames to a 16-16 record. The following
year, Liberty went 23-12, making an appearance in the CIT.
- McKay coached the Flames to victory during their last visit to John Paul Jones Arena in
an 86-82 upset of the Cavaliers (Nov. 25, 2008). Liberty was led by 26-point performances
from Kyle Ohman and Seth Curry and a 21-point effort by Anthony Smith.
- Current Liberty head coach Dale Layer was a member of McKay’s staff as an assistant
coach during the 2007-08 season, before joining Buzz Williams’ staff at Marquette the following year. Layer returned to the Hill City the following year, succeeding McKay as the
eighth head coach of the Flames.
- Upon starting the men’s basketball program at Queens University (then Queens College), Layer hired McKay as an assistant during the 1989-90 season, marking Layer’s first
head coaching gig and McKay’s first full-time coaching position. McKay later returned the
favor, hiring Layer as a member of his staff at Colorado State. After McKay accepted the
head coaching position at Oregon State, Layer was named the head coach of the Rams
(2000-07). Layer remained at Colorado State for seven seasons, before reuniting with
McKay again at Liberty for the 2007-08 season.
- Current Virginia director of basketball operations Brad Soucie also spent time at Liberty,
serving as an assistant under McKay (2007-09).
- Liberty graduate assistant Solomon Tat was a four-year letterwinner at Virginia (200710), playing under Bennett in his final season. During the 2009-10 campaign, Tat was a
senior captain, appearing in 14 contests. Apart from his time at Virginia, Tat, a native of
Jos Plateau, Nigeria, also competed for the Nigerian national team (2001-11).

Climbing the Ladder
- Davon Marshall has made 26 consecutive free throws, dating back to last season. After
missing his first shot from the charity stripe in the first round of the Big South Championship (March 5, 2013), Marshall ended the season 2012-13 making 17 straight free throws.
This season, the senior has hit his first nine shots from the foul line. The current program
record for consecutive free throws is 41, held by Seth Curry (2008-09). Marshall is also 21
points away from entering the top 50 on Liberty’s all-time scoring list.
- Antwan Burrus recently cracked the top 30 on Liberty’s all-time scoring list, he is currently sits at 29th with 809 tallies. On the program’s all-time rebounding list, Burrus (472)
needs nine boards to break the top 15. The redshirt senior is also tied for third with Willard
Deshazor (1974-1977) on Liberty’s career blocked shots list with 107. Burrus needs six
more to surpass Julius Nwosu (1991-93, 112 blocks) for the No. 2 spot.
- John Caleb Sanders (1,054 points) needs 12 more tallies to break into the top 20 on
Liberty’s all-time scoring list. Sanders is also gaining traction on his older brother Jesse
(2009-12), who closed out his Liberty career with 1,235 points.
Layer Signs Five for 2014-15

Sanders and Joel Vander Pol. Apart from Burrus, who was inactive last season, the group

rebounds (695-of-1,278 boards) in 2012-13.

New Kids on the Block
Three new players join the Flames’ roster this season – Joe Retic, Ryan Kemrite and
Devon Pekas. Retic, a transfer from Owens Community College, averaged 11.3 points,
3.5 rebounds and a team-high 5.1 assists, last season. Look for the Indianapolis, Ind., native to see action at point guard and provide Liberty with solid defense.
Kemrite, a four-year letter winner for the SATCH Mavericks, averaged 22.6 points per
game, 7.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a senior. The home schooler also tallied 3,771
points during his high school career, leaving SATCH as its all-time leader in points scored,
three-pointers made and rebounds.
Pekas, a three-year letterwinner at Hawley High School in Hawley, Minn., averaged
19.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.4 blocks, and 2.7 steals per game his senior year.
Pekas was also a two-year captain, three-time all-conference selection and a member of
the Minnesota All-Star team.
Queens University of Charlotte Names Court in Honor of Layer
While Layer was in attendance with his former players from the 1989-90 Royals men’s
basketball team for a Queens University of Charlotte Hall of Fame induction ceremony,
(Nov. 1) the university unveiled a new name for the performance court at Curry Arena –
Dale Layer Court.
“To have the court named for me was almost surreal,” Layer said. “I’m very thankful
and humbled. It’s a special honor that I’m not sure I’m deserving of, but I’m very appreciative and thankful.”
In regards to the surprise, Layer added, “I didn’t know what was going to happen. My
parents and [Marquette head coach] Buzz Williams showed up unexpectedly. We had all
13 of our players come back, which was almost a miracle in itself. To have 25 years pass
and 13 players all willing and able to come back to Charlotte was a treat. I had the chance
to see a lot of people I spent a lot of years with.”
Layer, who was inducted into the Queens Hall of Fame in 2010 as an individual, is
credited with pioneering the men’s basketball program at Queens and helping the institution’s athletics department transition from an all-women’s department to a co-ed program.
At the helm of Queens men’s basketball, Layer posted winning records in eight of his nine
seasons, finishing with an all-time NCAA Division II record of 168-88 (.656).
Under the skipper’s guidance, the Royals captured two regular-season Carolinas Virginias Conference (CVC) Championships, three CVC Tournament titles and appeared in
the NCAA Division II Tournament twice (1996, 1998). During the Royals’ run in the 199596 campaign, Queens reached the Division II Sweet 16, finishing out the season with
25-6 posting. Layer’s players achieved a 100 percent graduation rate during his time at
Queens. While Layer served as director of athletics, Queens also earned its first Hawn
Cup, an all-sport conference award.

Notes from Liberty’s Big South Championship Run - March 5-10, 2013
First Round - March 5 - Liberty 78, Coastal Carolina 61
- Despite an early lead by Coastal Carolina, No. 5 North seed Liberty capitalized on the
Chanticleers’ 11:36 second-half field goal drought, which included a decisive 23-3 run, to
defeat the host team, 78-61, in the first round.
- The Flames’ tournament victory was their first since defeating Gardner-Webb in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Big South Championship, 88-77 (March 3, 2009). Liberty is now 4-0
all-time in postseason play against Coastal Carolina.
- Davon Marshall paced the Flames with a game-high 28 points, going 7-of-12 from the
field, including 5-of-7 from three-point land and 9-of-10 at the charity stripe. Marshall’s 28
points were the most by a Liberty player in the Big South Championship since Seth Curry
recorded 30 in the Flames’ 88-77 victory over Gardner-Webb in the 2009 quarterfinals.
- Tomasz Gielo added 14 points against Coastal Carolina, while John Caleb Sanders had
10 tallies.
- Liberty shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field, including 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from

Coach’s Comments
“Devon is a point guard from Minnesota. He understands the game and has great length.
He has the ability to make his teammates better and make open shots. I’m encouraged
by what he can give our team at both ends of the floor and I think he’s going to be a welcomed addition.”

Coach’s Comments
“Joe is a junior college transfer with a great feel for the game. He will have a chance to
earn minutes at the point position and can defend two or three different spots. He can
score it, pass it and defend his position very well. He’s a guy we’re counting on to make
a major contribution.”
