Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 7 p.m.
The Game
The Liberty men’s basketball team returns to action Monday night, playing host to UNCW.
Head coach Dale Layer’s squad looks to rebound from back-to-back losses, while the
Seahawks hope to earn their third straight win. UNCW leads the all-time series, 2-0, after
defeating the Flames in the Vines Center during the 2011-12 campaign, 77-68. Tipoff is
slated for 7 p.m., with the contest airing live on ESPN3, Liberty Channel and the Big South
Network.
Milestone Watch – Antwan Burrus posted 10 points, this past Saturday versus Western
Carolina, surpassing the 800-point mark for his Liberty career. Burrus (802) now needs
198 more tallies to join teammate John Caleb Sanders in Liberty’s 1,000-point club. The
redshirt senior forward also needs seven more blocked shots (currently at 106) to become
No. 2 all-time in the program’s record books.
Bench Points – Liberty has been outscored off the bench, 64-33, in its last two contests.
During the span, the Flames’ starters have accounted for over 75 percent of the team’s
scoring.
Three-ball – Liberty’s sharp shooters could have some time in the lime ight during the
clash with the Seahawks. Through its first four games, UNCW is allowing approximately
nine three-pointers per game. The Flames will look to bounce back after hitting just three
treys against Western Carolina, the team’s fewest since knocking down a trio of threepointers in an 82-80 win at Campbell, last season.
Picking More Pockets – Through three games, Liberty is averaging eight steals per contest (24 steals). Last season, Liberty had just 14 thefts (4.7 spg) in its first three games of
the season, finishing the year with an average of 5.5 per game.

Notes and Anecdotes
- As head coach at Coastal Carolina (2005-07), Buzz Peterson went 4-0 against the
Flames.
- Liberty is 10-26 all-time against current CAA members. The Flames are 0-2 versus College of Charleston, 1-3 versus Drexel, 2-7 against James Madison, 0-2 against UNCW,
3-9 versus Towson and 4-3 against William & Mary.
- The Flames have one more CAA team on the docket, this season when they ring in the
New Year at Delaware on Jan.1.
- UNCW has already played on the road versus a Big South school this season, defeating
Big South preseason favorite (South Division) and 2013 runner-up Charleston Southern,
80-78, in overtime this past Wednesday. The Seahawks will face two more Big South programs this season, as they play host to Campbell on Dec. 3 and play on the road at UNC
Asheville (Dec. 28).
- Along with Peterson, UNCW has two other assistant coaches with Big South ties on its
coaching staff. Eddie Biedenbach, the winningest coach in Big South history, joined Peterson’s staff after 17 seasons at UNC Asheville. During his tenure with the Bulldogs, Biedenbach led UNC Asheville to three conference championships and NCAA appearances,
amassing a 256-258 record. While at UNC Asheville, Biedenbach and the Bulldogs went
27-11 versus the Flames.
- UNCW assistant coach Andre Gray was also an assistant on Gardner-Webb’s coaching
staff in 2008-09, helping the Bulldogs go 16-16 and 9-7 in the Big South. Liberty played
the Runnin’ Bulldogs three times that season, taking two-of-three matchups, including an
88-77 victory in the 2009 Big South Championship.

Notes from Liberty’s Big South Championship Run - March 5-10, 2013
First Round - March 5 - Liberty 78, Coastal Carolina 61
- Despite an early lead by Coastal Carolina, No. 5 North seed Liberty capitalized on the
Chanticleers’ 11:36 second-half field goal drought, which included a decisive 23-3 run, to
defeat the host team, 78-61, in the first round.
- The Flames’ tournament victory was their first since defeating Gardner-Webb in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Big South Championship, 88-77 (March 3, 2009). Liberty is now 4-0
all-time in postseason play against Coastal Carolina.
- Davon Marshall paced the Flames with a game-high 28 points, going 7-of-12 from the
field, including 5-of-7 from three-point land and 9-of-10 at the charity stripe. Marshall’s 28
points were the most by a Liberty player in the Big South Championship since Seth Curry
recorded 30 in the Flames’ 88-77 victory over Gardner-Webb in the 2009 quarterfinals.
- Tomasz Gielo added 14 points against Coastal Carolina, while John Caleb Sanders had
10 tallies.
- Liberty shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field, including 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from
the three-point arc. Coastal Carolina finished the night with 38.6 percent shooting (22-of57). The Liberty defense held the Chanticleers to a season-low 6.3 percent (1-of-16) from
three-point range.

- Looking for its first win against the Panthers after being swept in the regular season, the
Flames led by 17 at halftime before the Panthers answered in the second half.
- With Liberty up by one with 4.5 seconds remaining, High Point, who trailed the entire
game, had the final possession. However, the Panthers could not get the potential gamewinning shot off before the buzzer sounded, leading to a 61-60 Flames victory.
- Tavares Speaks led the Flames with 17 points, followed by Davon Marshall (16) and
John Caleb Sanders (12).
- Liberty shot 44.4 percent (20-of-45) from the field, while holding High Point to 33.3 percent (19-of-57). Head coach Dale Layer’s squad also won the rebounding battle, 37-30.
Semifinals - March 9 - Liberty 65, Gardner-Webb 62
- The Flames ended a nine-year streak without a finals appearance with the victory.
- John Caleb Sanders paced the Flames’ offense with 19 points, followed by Joel Vander
Pol (11) and Tavares Speaks (10). Vander Pol also collected seven boards to go with his
scoring effort off the bench.
- The Flames shot 46.8 percent (22-of-47) from the field, compared to 39.2 percent (20of-51) for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Dale Layer’s squad outscored Gardner-Webb in the paint,
26-8. Gardner-Webb made up for the difference from the three-point arc, going 10-of-26
from downtown. Liberty finished the night shooting 62.5 percent from three-point land (5of-8).
Championship Game - March 10 - Liberty 87, Charleston Southern 76
- The victory, which capped off a remarkable run of four wins in six days, marked Liberty’s
(15-20) third Big South championship in program history and the first since 2004.
- The Flames’ NCAA Tournament bid came after starting the season, 0-8. According to
STATS, Inc., since the 1996-97 season, three other teams have started the season 0-8 or
worse and made the NCAA Tournament – 2009-10 Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-11), 2007-08
Mississippi Valley State (0-8) and 1998-99 Florida A&M (0-10).
- With its record on the year, Liberty was just the second team in history to make the
tournament with 20-plus losses. The other was 2007-08 Coppin State (16-20 entering
tourney).
- John Caleb Sanders led all scorers with 27 points, tying his career high. The Sugar Land,
Texas native entered the NCAA Tournament needing eight more points to become the
23rd member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club.
- Davon Marshall followed with 20 points, going 6-of-7 from three-point range and 2-of-2 at
the foul line. The junior set a new Big South Championship record for most three-pointers

Coach’s Comments
“Devon is a point guard from Minnesota. He understands the game and has great length.
He has the ability to make his teammates better and make open shots. I’m encouraged
by what he can give our team at both ends of the floor and I think he’s going to be a welcomed addition.”

Coach’s Comments
“Joe is a junior college transfer with a great feel for the game. He will have a chance to
earn minutes at the point position and can defend two or three different spots. He can
score it, pass it and defend his position very well. He’s a guy we’re counting on to make
a major contribution.”
