Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 7 p.m.
Today’s Game
Liberty (0-1) will welcome James Madison (1-0) to the Vines Center for its 2013-14 home
opener, Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Lady Flames will look to bounce back from a 66-56 seasonopening defeat at Charlotte, while JMU is coming off of a 63-46 home victory over Virginia.
The “Starting Five” - Today’s Top Storylines
1) Hopes are high for both Liberty and James Madison this season. The Lady Flames
were picked to win the Big South Conference title for the 16th time in 17 years, while the
Dukes were the preseason pick to claim the CAA championship. Additionally, James Madison was listed No. 14 and Liberty No. 19 in the preseason CollegeInsider.com Women’s
Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
2) Tuesday’s contest will mark the eighth straight season Liberty and James Madison
have faced one another. JMU is 5-2 in the last seven matchups, four of which have been
decided by 10 points or fewer.
3) Liberty enters Tuesday’s tilt with a 10-game winning streak against in-state opponents
and a six-game home winning streak. In order to extend the two streaks, the Lady Flames
will need to record back-to-back wins over James Madison for the first time in program
history.
4) The Lady Flames are 11-3 in home openers under head coach Carey Green, and all
three setbacks have come at the hands of in-state opponents (VCU twice and Richmond).
5) Rebound margin will be an important statistic to watch on Tuesday. Liberty has led the
nation in the category in back-to-back seasons. Meanwhile, a +23 rebound margin played
a key role in James Madison’s 63-46 win over Virginia on Friday.

Notes and Anecdotes
• James Madison was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the CAA, while senior guard
Kirby Burkholder was voted CAA Preseason Player of the Year. The Dukes made both of
those projections look good on Friday, notching a 63-46 home win over Virginia, led by
Burkholder’s 24 points and career-high 16 rebounds.
• Both James Madison (No. 14) and Liberty (No. 19) appeared in the preseason
CollegeInsider.com Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 rankings.
• Tuesday’s game will mark the eighth straight season James Madison and Liberty have
squared off on the hardwood. Four of the last seven meetings have been decided by 10
points or fewer.
• Last season, Liberty posted a 60-48 victory at James Madison on Dec. 4, 2012 for the
Lady Flames’ first-ever road win over the Dukes. Devon Brown’s 22 points led the way,
while Emily Frazier added 10 markers. Liberty will now attempt to win back-to-back games
against JMU for the first time.
• James Madison has advanced to postseason play in eight straight seasons (5 WNIT, 3
NCAA), while Liberty has been there six consecutive times (5 NCAA, 1 WNIT).
• Rebounding will be a key on Tuesday, as Liberty ranked No. 1 in the nation in rebound
margin in 2012-13 (+16.9) while JMU outrebounded Virginia by a 49-26 count on Friday.

Competing Against the Commonwealth
Tuesday’s contest will be the first of Liberty’s seven matchups against in-state opponents
this season. All three of the Lady Flames’ non-conference home games pit Liberty versus
Commonwealth foes, including Tuesday’s game, a Nov. 19 matchup with Virginia and a
Dec. 3 tilt against Richmond.
Liberty went 8-0 against Virginia squads last season and has won 10 consecutive games
versus in-state opponents. Liberty’s last loss to a Commonwealth foe was a 66-54 setback
at Richmond on Dec. 20, 2011.
Uncommon Occurrence
Liberty will look to avoid starting a season 0-2 for just the third time under head coach
Carey Green. The 2000-01 and 2010-11 Lady Flames each dropped two straight games
to open the year.
Trying On New Threads
Liberty will debut its new set of white uniforms on Tuesday, but the Lady Flames may be
reluctant to change after going 72-13 in their previous set of white jerseys.
Sorting Out the Streaks
The Lady Flames will attempt to extend their six-game home winning streak on Tuesday,
four days after their lengthy road winning streak was halted. Liberty had won 11 straight
road contests in a row prior to its 66-56 setback at Charlotte, marking the second-longest
road winning streak in program history.

A Look Back at Liberty’s 66-56 Loss at Charlotte
• Liberty dropped its season opener on the road for the second straight year, falling by a
66-56 score at Charlotte on Friday.
• Charlotte won by converting 30 Liberty turnovers into 28 points, getting to the free throw
line more often than the Lady Flames (27 attempts to 12) and featuring a balanced scoring
attack with six players tallying seven or more points each.
• Liberty used its size advantage to win the battles of rebounding (31-27), points in the
paint (30-25) and second-chance points (19-4).
• After making a program-record 173 three-pointers in 2012-13 (average of 5.1 per game),
Liberty hit five triples at Charlotte, all of which came during the second half.
• Despite being limited to 20 minutes by foul trouble, Ashley Rininger tied for the team lead
in points (13) and rebounds (7). Prior to Friday, Liberty was 10-0 when Rininger scores in
double figures.
• One of two Lady Flames to make her first career start (also Katelyn Adams), Sadalia Ellis
scored 11 of her career-high 13 points during the final 8:41.
• Catherine Kearney (6 points in a career-high 31 minutes played) and Emily Frazier (3
points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 29 minutes played) both made successful returns from
knee injuries which halted their respective 2012-13 seasons prematurely.
• Freshmen Simone Brown, Tech Hanson and Mickayla Sanders all made their collegiate
debuts on Friday, scoring all 11 of their points (7 by Brown and 4 by Sanders) after halftime. Brown and Sanders combined to make all three of their three-point attempts.
Fresh Faces
Six newcomers dot the 2013-14 Liberty roster, including freshmen Moriah Begin, Simone
Brown, Tesh Hanson, Audrey Rettstatt, Mickayla Sanders and Emily Stotmeister. This is
Liberty’s largest group of newcomers since the 2005-06 Lady Flames also boasted six
freshmen (Alexandria Bream, Megan Frazee, Molly Frazee, Moriah Frazee, Rachel Hammond and Rebecca Lightfoot).
That season, Megan and Moriah Frazee both started right away and were the two leading scorers for Liberty, which went 25-6 and captured the Big South regular-season and
tournament titles.
Big Shoes to Fill
Liberty will have to compensate for the loss of a talented five-member senior class, which
graduated at the conclusion of the 2012-13 season. The departing Lady Flames included
Devon Brown, Brittany Campbell, Terika Lunsford, Tolu Omotola and LaKendra Washington.
• Brown and Omotola both made the 2013 Big South All-Conference first team roster,
while Brown, Campbell and Omotola were all named to the 2013 Big South All-Tournament team.
• In 2012-13, Liberty’s five seniors combined for 1,334 points (55 percent of the team’s
total), 657 rebounds (41 percent of the team’s total) and 3,100 minutes played (46 percent
of the team’s total.)
