(6-4, 2-0 Big South)
Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 7 p.m.
The Game
The Liberty men’s basketball team puts its four-game win streak on the line against
the George Mason Patriots, this Saturday. The Commonwealth clash marks the final
matchup of a four-year series that has traded off between Fairfax, Va., and Lynchburg.
Riding a five-game win streak of their own, the Patriots look to end the Flames’ early 3-0
mark in the Vines Center this season. Tipoff for the contest is slated for 7 p.m.
Recent Results
For the second straight season, the Liberty men’s basketball team opened its Big
South conference slate on a positive note on Dec. 2. Despite trailing for three-fourths of
the contest, the Flames rallied in the final 10 minutes against Presbyterian College, besting the Blue Hose in the Vines Center, 70-61.
Thanks in part to a career night by Evan Gordon, the Flames made history last Saturday night with its 75-72 victory over defending Big South champion Winthrop inside the
Vines Center. For the first time in program history, the 6-4 Flames start the conference
season with a 2-0 record.
Watch and Listen to the Flames
Saturday’s contest will be televised on the Flames Sports Network, with Ray Jones
providing the play-by-play and Tim Scarborough adding color commentary. There will be
a radio broadcast on the Flames Sports Network (flagship WRVL 88.3 FM) with Alan York
providing the play-by-play. York takes over play-by-play duties this season for longtime
broadcaster Jerry Edwards, who retired this past spring after 29 years.
In addition to the radio broadcast, an Internet audio broadcast on LibertyFlames.com
will be available.

Record at Liberty: 21-20 (Second Year)
Career Record: 291-213 (18th Year)
Mountain West Conference Championship: 2003
2 NCAA Division II Appearances: 1996 (Sweet 16), 1998
Entering his second season as head coach of the Flames, Dale Layer is the eighth
coach in program history. Layer returned to Liberty Mountain in 2009 after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season.
This is Layer’s third head coaching stint and first since leaving Colorado State in 2007.
Layer, 51, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant coach at
BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette in 2008-09 where he worked with the
guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round appearance in the
NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-American Dominic James,
who injured himself near the end of the season.
Dale Layer first served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping
the Flames to its best regular season finish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Championship.
Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado
State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams
during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his
junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with
the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s first round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were
traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as
the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th
selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were
ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications.
Layer has a career 291-213 record (18th year) as a head coach, including nine seasons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He
also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program
in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel
in the classroom too. In Layer’s 17 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 45
seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100
percent graduation rate of all players who finish their eligibility under Layer.
After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started
his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on
to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except
for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky.
Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coaching job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with
the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they
beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California.
While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In
2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its
first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the first round.

Scouting the Patriots
George Mason enters Saturday’s contest sporting a 7-2 record overall and a 1-0 posting
in CAA play. The Patriots are currently on a five-game win streak, defeating Radford (81-55),
Florida Atlantic (66-51), George Washington (60-46), UNC Wilmington (80-52) and Loyola
(Md.) (66-52) during the span.
Luke Hancock leads the Patriots in points and assists, averaging 13.1 tallies and 4.5
helpers per game. The Patriots’ other two double-digit scorers are Cam Long (12.1 ppg)
and Ryan Pearson (11.9 ppg). Mike Morrison is the team’s leading rebounder, grabbing 6.3
boards per contest.
Liberty-George Mason Series
George Mason leads the all-time series against Liberty, 5-3. The first meeting between
the two Commonwealth competitors took place during Liberty’s Division II days. George
Mason hosted the Flames in the Patriot Center on Feb. 17, 1987, taking the contest, 92-74.
The Flames are 2-1 when playing the Patriots in the Vines Center. Last season, Liberty
opened the 2009-10 campaign at the Patriot Center. With the Patriots leading by 19 in the
second half, the Flames rallied in the period, before falling short in the opener, 76-72.
Liberty Versus the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)
The Flames are 11-36 all time against current members of the Colonial Athletic Association. Liberty is currently 1-3 against Drexel, 3-5 against George Mason, 2-7 against James
Madison, 0-4 against Old Dominion, 0-1 against UNC Wilmington, 3-9 against Towson, 1-5
against VCU and 1-2 against William & Mary.
Layer Versus the CAA
Liberty Head Coach Dale Layer is 1-4 all-time against current CAA members. As head
coach at Liberty, Layer is 0-1 against George Mason, 0-2 against UNC Wilmington and 0-1
against Old Dominion. During his stint at Colorado State, Layer led his team to a victory over
Northeastern on Dec. 29, 2000, as the Rams defeated the Huskies, 63-52. At the time of the
matchup, Northeastern belonged to the America East Conference.
Common Opponents
Heading into Saturday’s contest, Liberty has already faced one CAA member this season. On Nov. 16, the Flames took on UNC Wilmington inside the Seahawks’ Trask Coliseum.
After being down 14 points at halftime, the Flames rallied with a 21-2 run to take the lead
in the second half. However, the Seahawks responded from being eight points down in the
closing minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime and ultimately edge the Flames
by five, 69-64. The Patriots played host to the Seahawks last Saturday, defeating the conference foe soundly, 80-52.
George Mason has also faced one member of the Big South this season, defeating the
Radford Highlanders, 81-55, at the Patriot Center on Nov. 24. Cam Long led the Patriots with
20 points, followed by Andre Cornelius (17) and Ryan Pearson (13).
CAA on the Docket
Liberty is slated to take one more CAA member this season. Next Saturday, the Flames
will host William & Mary. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Patriots-Tribe Back-to-Back
Few Flames fans will forget the last time George Mason and William & Mary visited
Lynchburg. Two seasons ago, the Flames met the Patriots and the Tribe in back-to-back
contests, but in reverse order. On Nov. 29, Liberty hosted William & Mary as part of the
2008 Liberty Thanksgiving Classic. Seth Curry tallied 13 of his 21 points during two overtime periods, helping the Flames pick up the 80-74 double-overtime victory.
Four days later, Liberty once again found itself in overtime, this time against the Patriots. With 17.7 seconds remaining in the contest, Curry knocked down a clutch threepointer which sent the contest into overtime. Liberty hung on in the extra period to win,
69-66.
Cut From the Same Mold
Saturday’s contest features two former teammates. Before transitioning to the collegiate court, current Liberty guard Evan Gordon and George Mason forward Luke Hancock spent a season together at Hargrave Military Academy, a prep school in Chatham,
Va. Gordon, Hancock and the Tigers went 27-2 during the 2008-09 season, finishing as
runner-up in the National Prep Showcase Finals. The team also featured current Coastal
Carolina sophomore guard Danny Nieman.
Gordon is currently Liberty’s leading scorer, averaging 14.4 points per game. Meanwhile, Hancock is pacing the Patriots in points this season, averaging 13.1 per contest.
Mr. 500
With his 26 points against Winthrop this past Saturday, Evan Gordon has now passed
the 500 career-point mark with 516 tallies. Gordon is the second Flame to reach 500 career points this season. On Nov. 18, junior point guard Jesse Sanders netted 10 points
against Southern Virginia to achieve the milestone.
Most Improved
Redshirt junior David Minaya is Liberty’s most improved player this season, putting
up better numbers in almost every major statistical category. Last season, the guard had
90 points in 29 games (3.1 ppg). This season, Minaya is averaging 10.9 ppg (109 points)
through 10 games, hitting 40-of-88 (.455) shots from the floor. The Florida native’s shooting percentage is up from last season, as he only hit 33-of-100 shots (.330) from the field,
last season.
On a Roll
With four-straight wins, Liberty is currently on its longest win streak since the 200809 season. Two seasons ago, the Flames put together a five-game win streak and two
four-game win streaks, with the last occurring in February 2009. Liberty only mustered as
many as three-straight wins last season, defeating Mississippi Valley State (Nov. 27), Tennessee State (Nov. 28) and Charleston Southern (Dec. 3).
The New 3G - Gordon’s Golden Game
In Liberty’s 75-72 win over Winthrop on Saturday, Evan Gordon posted a career-high
26 points and five steals, while also chipping in seven rebounds and five assists. The
Indianapolis native’s performance marks the first time a Liberty player has posted at least
20 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals since Seth Curry accomplished the
feat in his Liberty debut against Montreat on Nov. 14, 2008.

Brown has posted double digit totals in rebounds in five games this season. In his
Liberty debut, Brown grabbed 17 rebounds, becoming the first Flame to do so in nearly
two years. The guard also collected 12 rebounds at Notre Dame (Nov. 14) and 14 at Texas
Tech (Nov. 21).
Chasing Dad
After scoring 26 points in Liberty’s contest against Chicago State on Saturday, Evan
Gordon now has 516 career points. The sophomore’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr., holds a
place in the Liberty record books as a member of the 1,000-point club with 1,154 career
points. The elder Gordon is 16th all-time on Liberty’s scoring list.
Rebounding Machine
In his Liberty debut against Virginia Intermont on Nov. 12, redshirt junior John Brown
finished with a double-double, posting 18 points and 17 rebounds. The last time a Flame
grabbed that many boards was during the 2008-09 season, when Anthony Smith finished
with 17 in a 91-80 win at VMI on Jan. 17, 2009. The most rebounds garnered by a Flame
in a single game last season was 15 (Jesse Sanders, vs. VMI, Jan. 28, 2010).
Double-Double Dude
In Thursday’s 70- 61 win over Presbyterian, John Brown finished the contest with a
Liberty career-high 23 points while adding 13 rebounds, securing his fifth double-double
of the season. With five double-doubles in nine contests, the Big South’s leader in the
category has already had more double-doubles than any Flame from last season’s squad.
Free Basketball for Everybody
After going the whole 2009-10 season without an overtime game, Liberty has already
went to an extra period twice this season. The Flames experienced their second overtime
of the 2010-11 campaign on Nov. 27, as they defeated Chicago State, 67-65, in extra
minutes.
Flames in December
After going 2-0 last week in conference games against Presbyterian and Winthrop,
Liberty is 106-128 all-time in the month of December. Last season, the Flames finished
with a 3-3 record in the 12th month.
Perimeter Points
Despite the recent absence of sharpshooter Jeremy Anderson, the Flames continue
to have solid three-point production. Evan Gordon leads the Big South in three-pointers
made with 27 (2.7 per game), while freshman John Caleb Sanders is 15th on the conference listing with 16 (1.6 per game). Sanders is also the Flames’ leader in three-point field
goal percentage, shooting 42.1 percent.
Liberty-Nigeria Connection
Sommy Ogukwe, a 6-7 freshman forward from Abuja, Nigeria, is not the first Liberty
player born in the African nation. In fact, two of the four players whose jerseys are retired
at Liberty are Nigerian natives – Peter Aluma and Julius Nwosu.
Nwosu, who played three seasons for the Flames (1991-1993), is a member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club, finishing his collegiate career with 1,248 points (14th all-time).
Nwosu is also second on Liberty’s all-time list in blocks with 112. The center was the first
Liberty player to ever play in the NBA, suiting up for three different teams – the San Antonio Spurs (1995), the Boston Celtics (1997) and the Utah Jazz (2000). Nwosu is a native
of Imo, Nigeria, which is approximately 372 miles from Ogukwe’s hometown of Abuja.
Aluma, a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Liberty is seventh on Liberty’s
all-time scoring list with 1,715 career points. The former center holds the record for most
blocks in a career by a Liberty payer with 366. In his freshman season with the Flames,
he helped Liberty win its first Big South Championship and advance to its first ever NCAA
Tournament in 1994. In 2008, he became the second Liberty athlete to be inducted into
the Big South Hall of Fame. Aluma is a native of Lagos, Nigeria, which is approximately
466 miles from Abuja.

* - Big South Conference Game
Heated Half
In Liberty’s game against Chicago State on Nov. 27, the Flames experienced their
best single-half shooting performance of the season. During the first half of the contest,
Liberty shot 57.7 percent from the field, hitting 15-of-26 shots.
Points Chase
Two current Liberty Flames are on Liberty’s Top 50 scorers list – Jesse Sanders and
Evan Gordon. Sanders currently sits in 45th with 558 points, while Gordon is steadily gaining ground in the 50th spot with 516. Gordon recently cracked the Top 50, finishing with 13
points in Liberty’s 67-65 overtime win against Chicago State, this past Saturday.
Season-to-Season Comparison
When looking back at the first eight games of the 2009-10 season, Liberty has shown
improvement in several categories, this season. The Flames are currently averaging 66.9
points per game through 10 contests, which is up from last year’s 10-game mark of 62.8.
The 2010-11 Flames are also averaging more rebounds per game, grabbing 41.6
boards per contest. Last season, the Flames averaged 36.1 rebounds per game through
10 contests.
Liberty’s turnovers are also lower this season. In the first 10 games of 2009-10, the
Flames committed an average of 17.0 turnovers. This season, the number is down to
15.3. On the opposite end of the court, Liberty is forcing more turnovers this season (15.5)
compared to last year (13.9).
Big South Blocker
Through 10 contests, sophomore forward leads the Big South in blocked shots with
18. Last season, Burrus finished second on the team in blocked shots with 28.
Serving up the Dimes
Jesse Sanders leads the Big South in assists with 65 (6.5 apg). The junior floor general holds a solid lead over VMI’s Rodney Glasgow, who has 51 (5.1 apg). This season,
Sanders has garnered five assists or more in 9-of-10 games.
Sanders is off to his best start in assists this season. During his freshman year in
which he finished with 137 helpers, Sanders had 41 through 10 games. Last season,
Sanders finished with 152 for the season with 40 through 10 games.
Oh So Close
With two career triple-doubles already, point guard Jesse Sanders nearly made it
three last Saturday against Winthrop, finishing with 14 points, 10 boards and eight assists.
Flames No. 1 in Rebound Margin
Through 10 games this season, the Flames are first in the Big South in rebound margin. Liberty is averaging 41.6 boards per game while holding opponents to 33.3 per contest for a margin of + 8.3. The Flames have outrebounded seven of their nine opponents
this season. The most the Flames have been outrebounded by this season is nine, which
occurred on Nov. 23 at USF.
Single-game Lows
Forty three is the fewest points posted by Liberty in a game this season (at USF, Nov. 23),
however, the mark still fell short of making the Liberty record books. On Feb. 12, 1981,
Liberty scored just 30 points against East Tennessee State. The Buccaneers took the
contest, 53-30.

New Season, New Voice
Flames fans listening to the radio will hear a new voice this season. On July 6,
Liberty Athletics hired former ISP broadcaster Alan York as its new radio play-by-play
broadcaster for its football and men’s basketball programs.
York will be replacing Liberty’s legendary play-by-play broadcaster Jerry Edwards, who held the position of “Voice of the Flames” for 29 years before retiring
from broadcasting last spring. York will be the fifth person to hold down the position
as the Flames’ play-by-play broadcaster for men’s basketball.
For the past 12 years, York has been an assistant production manager for ISP,
America’s Home for College Sports on the radio for the last two decades.
While at ISP, York was based out of Winston-Salem, N.C., and was the lead
broadcaster for the ACC National Game of the Week in football. He has also gained
experience broadcasting various Wake Forest’s men’s and women’s basketball and
baseball programs.
Home Court Advantage?
The Flames are looking to improve its record at home this season, after finishing
8-6 (.571) inside the Vines Center last season. The winning percentage was the lowest since the 2005-2006 season, when the Flames went 6-7 (.462) at home. Liberty’s
lowest winning percentage inside the Vines Center occurred during the 1990-91
season, when the Flames went 3-8 (.375) during home games. The following season, Liberty turned things around, finishing the season 14-1 at home and claiming
the best winning percentage in the Vines Center (.933).
Streak Snapped
Liberty’s overtime game with UNC Wilmington on Nov. 16 ended a 44-game streak
without an overtime. Prior to the contest, the last time Liberty had gone to an extra
period was on Feb. 4, 2009, when the Flames were edged on the road by GardnerWebb, 95-90.
All-American Transfer
One new face expected to bring instant experience to the Flames’ roster is redshirt junior guard John Brown. A junior college transfer from Roane State, Brown
averaged a double-double for the Raiders last season, posting 16.7 points while
grabbing 11.0 rebounds per game. The 6-5 Savannah, Ga., native was rewarded for
his efforts last season, earning National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)
All-America second team honors. Before his time at Roane State, Brown suited up
for The Citadel, receiving a spot on the 2008-09 SoCon All-Freshman Team.
The Brothers Sanders
After suiting up for the Flames for two seasons, starting point guard Jesse Sanders is joined this season by his younger brother, John Caleb. The brothers reunite
after playing two seasons together with the HCYA Warriors (2006-07, 2007-08).
Jesse, who averaged 8.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game last
season and became the first player in Big South and school history to garner two
career triple-doubles when he posted 11 points, 10 boards and 10 assists against
Kentucky Christian on Dec. 12. Sanders’ first three-category performance occurred
during his freshman season against Presbyterian College.
Much like Liberty’s floor general, John Caleb has spent his high school career
in the Homeschool Christian Youth Association (HCYA), matching up with the top
5A and prep schools in the Houston area. During his junior year, he was named to
the All Greater Houston third team, averaging 28 points per game, 8.9 rebounds per
game and 4.7 assists per game. John Caleb helped the Warriors win three national
homeschool championships, including one with his older brother.
The Only One with Two Threes
Liberty concluded the 2009-10 campaign as the only Division I school in the
country to have two players record a triple-double during the year. The first three category feat for the Flames occurred on Dec. 12, as Jesse Sanders posted 11 points,
10 boards and 10 assists against Kentucky Christian. In his final season as a Flame,
Kyle Ohman also notched a triple-double, putting up 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10
assists in a 110-102 victory over VMI on Jan. 2.
