N/A at James Madison DUKES (4-3, 0-0 CAA) Harrisonburg, Va. - JMU Convocation Center - 2 p.m. The Game Liberty (3-4, 0-0 Big South) will open a stretch of nine consecutive games away from Lynchburg Sunday at 2 p.m., with a trip to James Madison (4-3, 0-0 CAA). The contest at the JMU Convocation Center will pit the Big South and CAA preseason favorites against one another. Liberty will be in search of its first road win of the season and its first-ever victory at James Madison. The Dukes own a 5-1 edge in the all-time head-to-head series, including victories each of the last two seasons. Last Time Out The Lady Flames snapped a two-game losing skid with a season-best offensive output in a 93-75 win over Glenville State, Tuesday evening at the Vines Center. Avery Warley (17 points, 10 rebounds) and freshman Jasmine Gardner (10 points, 13 rebounds) both fashioned double-doubles against the Pioneers, helping Liberty improve to 3-0 at home this season. A Look Ahead Liberty will not play again for nearly two weeks after Sunday, as the Lady Flames take a break from competition for the end of the fall semester and final exams. Liberty will return to action on Dec. 18 at 2 p.m., with its first-ever visit to North Carolina Central. Last season, the Lady Flames took the inaugural meeting betwen the two programs by a 64-44 score, Feb. 4 at the Vines Center. Lady Flames On The Air All Lady Flames basketball games may be heard LIVE on WWMC 90.9 FM “The Light.” Jamie Hall, in his 17th year of broadcasting Lady Flames basketball, will handle the courtside play-by-play duties for all games. His teams have averaged 24 victories per year, while becoming a regular fixture in the NCAA Tournament. Green has accumulated a 267-87 record on the Liberty bench, good for a winning percentage of .754. He ranked 10th all-time among NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches in winning percentage to begin the year, ahead of renowned coaching names like Rutgers’ Vivian Stringer, LSU’s Van Chancellor and North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell. More importantly, Liberty has won the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament 10 times with Green as head coach. Liberty has totaled 23 or more victories during nine of those years, including the 2004-05 season, which saw the Lady Flames reach the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history. Green has actually been to the postseason on 22 occasions as a women’s basketball coach, a span which includes a dozen years as an assistant coach at Clemson. In all but one of the 22 appearances, he has experienced the NCAA Tournament. In 2009-10, Liberty made another trip to the “Big Dance,” despite fielding a young team which featured only one senior. The Lady Flames finished the year with a 27-6 record and hoisted the Big South Tournament championship trophy for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons. Rebounding and defense have always been staples of Green-coached teams, and the 2009-10 Lady Flames were certainly no exception. Liberty outrebounded opponents by an average of 13.9 caroms per game, leading the nation in the category. The Lady Flames have now been listed among the nation’s top five teams in rebounding margin for seven straight years. Liberty previously led the nation in the category in 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames also ended the season ranked in the top 10 nationally for scoring defense (second, school-record 50.0 ppg), field goal percentage (second, .482) and scoring margin (seventh, +17.2). A key late-season conference victory over High Point in 2006 made Green the winningest coach in Big South Conference history. He is also Liberty’s career wins leader. The 2004-05 year was a special one on Liberty Mountain, for many reasons. A seniorladen Lady Flames team recorded upset wins over No. 4 seed Penn State (78-70) and No. 5 seed DePaul (88-79) in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second team ever to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed. The Lady Flames ended the season with their highest national ranking to date, 21st (USA Today/ESPN). Green’s track record shows he has the ability to meet those challenges. The Lady Flames have recorded two wins over UNLV, Virginia and West Virginia and solo victories over No. 19 DePaul, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 25 Penn State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest during Green’s tenure. The upset victory over No. 25 Virginia in 2003 marked Liberty’s first win over a Top 25 team. His record against conference foes is equally impressive. He led the Lady Flames on a Big South record 47-game winning streak and currently owns a .914 (171-16) winning percentage against conference teams. Green has marched through conference play with one or fewer setbacks seven times, while guiding the Lady Flames to two undefeated conference seasons. The Dukes are 4-3 to start the 2010-11 season, with two of the losses coming to nationally ranked opponents. JMU is ranked No. 13 in the most recent CollegeInsider.com Women’s Mid-Major Top 25. The Dukes are led by 5-7 senior guard Dawn Evans, who is averaging 23.0 ppg and has already made 21 three-pointers. She was ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring and No. 3 in three-pointers made in the latest NCAA statistical report and is nearing the program career scoring record with 2,067 career points. Evans is complemented on the inside by 6-4 senior center Lauren Jimenez, chipping in 12.3 ppg and 8.0 rpg. Tarik Hislop, a 5-7 senior guard, adds 9.3 ppg. The Coaching Matchup Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his 12th season with the Lady Flames, and has led his team to 10 Big South titles. A five-time Big South Coach of the Year, Green owns a 267-87 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women’s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.754) ranked 10th all-time among NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches at the season’s outset. Green is 1-3 all-time versus James Madison. Kenny Brooks, a former point guard for the JMU men’s basketball team, is 176-82 in his ninth year coaching his alma mater. His last five teams have averaged 25 wins per season, and all five have experienced postseason play. The 2006-07 and 2009-10 Dukes squads reached the NCAA Tournament. The 2007 CAA Coach of the Year is 3-1 all-time versus Liberty. Liberty-James Madison Series Notes Liberty is 1-5 all-time versus James Madison, and the Dukes have won the last two meetings between the two Commonwealth foes. The Lady Flames are winless in their four visits to Harrisonburg. Last season, JMU halted Liberty’s 12-game home winning streak by notching a 60-50 victory at the Vines Center on Dec. 1, 2009. James Madison freshman Tarik Hislop led all players with 15 points, while Dawn Evans added 14 markers. Amber Mays was Liberty’s top scorer with 14 points. Devon Brown tied her career low with nine points on 1-16 shooting from the field, but grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Liberty Versus the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) The Lady Flames own a 23-59 all-time record against current members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Lady Flames are looking to snap a four-game losing streak versus CAA foes, dating back to their matchup with Old Dominion in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament (March 23, 2008). Liberty’s last CAA victory was a 79-66 home triumph over James Madison on Dec. 4, 2007. Liberty is 0-1 all-time against Delaware, 0-2 against Drexel, 2-11 against George Mason, 1-5 against James Madison, 0-2 against Old Dominion, 4-5 against Towson, 9-22 against VCU and 7-11 against William & Mary. Last season, Liberty went 2-3 during the calendar year’s final month. This will be the second straight season that the Lady Flames will play only five December contests, and all five games will take place away from Lynchburg. Competing Against the Commonwealth Sunday’s game will mark the second of Liberty’s six scheduled contests versus Virginia opponents this season. The Lady Flames are 1-0 versus Commonwealth foes so far in 2010-11, after defeating Virginia Union, 71-19, on Nov. 16. Liberty’s remaining Commonwealth clashes in 2010-11 include a home game against Radford (Jan. 17) and road trips to VCU (Dec. 21), Longwood (Jan. 14) and Radford (Feb. 19). Down the Road from Devon’s House Sunday’s game will be played less than 40 miles from Devon Brown’s hometown of Waynesboro. A knee injury has sidelined the Big South Preseason Player of the Year for the first seven games of the 2010-11 season, but there is a chance she could make her season debut in front of a sizeable collection of friends and family members at James Madison. JMU head coach Kenny Brooks is very familiar with Waynesboro. Like Brown, he is an alumnus of Waynesboro High School. Pack Your Bags Liberty’s next home game is not until Jan. 17, when the Lady Flames return to the Vines Center for a Big South Conference matchup against Radford. Before then, the Lady Flames will play nine consecutive games away from home, marking the squad’s longest road swing since a 10-game trip during the 1991-92 season. The lengthy road trip will include games in four different states (Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia). During the string of road contests, the Lady Flames will travel over 2,000 miles by bus. Home Sweet Home Perhaps no current Liberty player enjoys home games at the Vines Center more than sophomore guard/forward Jelena Antic. She is averaging 11.1 ppg during 14 career home games, as opposed to 7.1 ppg in 16 contests away from Lynchburg. Slow Starts, Fast Finishes This is the sixth time in Carey Green’s 12 seasons as head coach that the Lady Flames have started 3-4 or worse in their first seven games of the season. The first five times it happened, Liberty went on to win the Big South Conference title. In 2000-01, the Lady Flames were 2-5 at this juncture, part of a 2-9 start to the season. Liberty finished the year 18-12. The following year, Liberty started 3-4. The Lady Flames’ record stood at 4-6, before the team went 19-1 in its next 20 games to reach the NCAA Tournament. The 2001-02 Liberty squad ended up at 23-8. The 2003-04 Lady Flames were also 3-4 at this point in the season. Later in the year, Liberty reeled off a 19-game winning streak, pushing its final record to 25-7. In 2004-05, Liberty won just three of its first seven games. Despite the slow start, the Lady Flames went on to reach the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 and close the year with a 26-7 ledger. The 2008-09 campaign saw Liberty start 1-6 through seven games. The Lady Flames were 3-7, before winning 21 of their next 22 games and wrapping up the year at 24-9. Noting the 90s Tuesday’s 93-75 home win over Glenville State marked the 12th time in Carey Green’s 12 seasons as head coach that the Lady Flames have hit the 90-point plateau. It was Liberty’s first 90-point game at the Vines Center since Dec. 13, 2008 versus St. Paul’s. Miscellaneous Stats For the 2010-11 Lady Flames Team Scoring Leaders Jelena Antic Avery Warley Emily Frazier Dymond Morgan Tolu Omotola 3 times 2 times 1 time 1 time 1 time 20-Point Games None Road Success Liberty is in search of its first win away from the Vines Center this season, as the Lady Flames are 0-2 in road games and 0-2 in neutral-site contests. The Lady Flames have been a strong road team in recent years. In the last three seasons, Liberty is 42-15 in games played away from the Vines Center. Frazier’s First Award Point guard Emily Frazier was tabbed the Big South Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, becoming the first Lady Flame to earn a conference weekly honor this season. Missing No. 40 Big South Preseason Player of the Year Devon Brown has yet to take the court for the Lady Flames in 2010-11, due to injury. In her absence, Liberty is 3-4 and is scoring just 57.1 ppg. Two seasons ago, another Big South Preseason Player of the Year wearing uniform No. 40 missed an extended period of time early in Liberty’s season due to injury. Megan Frazee sat out eight games during the 2008-09 campaign with an ankle injury. Liberty went 2-6 with Frazee sidelined, scoring only 58.4 ppg. With Frazee in the lineup that year, Liberty posted a 22-3 record and boosted its scorign average to 64.0 ppg. Liberty’s best-ever season against non-conference foes came in 1997-98, when the Lady Flames went 14-1 outside the Big South. Liberty’s lone non-conference setback that season came to eventual national champion Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament. Lady Flames to Face Wide Variety of Non-Conference Foes Liberty is scheduled to match up with opponents from eight different conferences this season, including Big 12 (Baylor & Texas A&M), BIG EAST (St. John’s), CAA (James Madison & VCU), CIAA (Virginia Union), MEAC (North Carolina Central), MVC (Creighton), Patriot (Lafayette), Southern Conference (College of Charleston) and WVIAC (Glenville State) foes. Depending on how the Terrapin Classic plays out, the Lady Flames could also face teams from the ACC (Maryland) or the Atlantic-10 (La Salle). Piling Up the Postseason Qualifiers Liberty could play as many as 12 games against teams which qualified for postseason tournaments in 2009-10. The Lady Flames’ potential opponents this year include four NCAA Tournament qualifiers (Baylor, James Madison, St. John’s and Texas A&M), four WNIT qualifiers (Creighton, Gardner-Webb, Maryland and VCU) and two WBI qualifiers (Charleston Southern and College of Charleston). The Lady Flames will host Charleston Southern on Jan. 24 and Gardner-Webb on Feb. 12. Other than those two contests, the rest of Liberty’s matchups with 2009-10 postseason teams will be played away from the Vines Center. Liberty’s Record ... She is the longest-tenured assistant coach in program history, and has helped Liberty achieve considerable success. The Lady Flames have gone 177-55 during Stephens’ tenure, winning six Big South titles and making the “Sweet 16” of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. International Flavor Sophomore Jelena Antic hails from Skopje, Macedonia and redshirt sophomore Tolu Omotola was born in London, England, giving Liberty international players on its roster for the 17th consecutive season. The last time the Lady Flames’ roster consisted solely of American-born players was the 1993-94 campaign. Every Carey Green-coached team at Liberty has featured at least one international player. Since that contest at the Millis Center, the Lady Flames have played 116 consecutive games without needing extra time. No current Lady Flame has played an overtime contest in college. The Lady Flames’ most recent overtime victory came on Jan. 6, 2004, when Liberty defeated American, 76-72, on the road in double overtime. Liberty’s most recent overtime contest at the Vines Center was a memorable one. The Lady Flames defeated Virginia, 77-69, in overtime on Nov. 26, 2002, to claim their firstever win over the Cavaliers. It also marked Liberty’s first win over a ranked opponent, as Virginia entered the game with a No. 23 national ranking. Double Digits x 9 Avery Warley, Jelena Antic, Tolu Omotola, Danika Dale and Jasmine Gardner all scored in double figures against Glenville State on Tuesday. They join Emily Frazier, Rachel McLeod, Dymond Morgan and LaKendra Washington in the group of nine Lady Flames who have a double-digit scoring effort to their credit already in 2010-11. With 589 career boards, Warley sits No. 9 in program history. Free Throw Woes Liberty is shooting only 59.9 percent from the free throw line through seven games. That’s the lowest percentage by a Lady Flames team since 1994-95, when Liberty shot 59.8 percent for the year. Antic At It Again Jelena Antic posted some notable statistics versus Virginia Union, despite playing only 21 minutes. Her career-high four three-pointers were the most by a Lady Flame since Jan. 31, 2009, when Rachel Hammond drained five triples against High Point. The sophomore also came up with a career-best five steals. It was the first time a Liberty player recorded four three-pointers and four steals in the same game since Dec. 4, 2004, when Kristal Tharp accomplished the feat at Kansas State. Wanted for Theft Last season, Liberty ranked No. 14 nationally in steals per game (11.4 spg) and tied the program record with 377 steals. The Lady Flames have also been active on the defensive end during the first seven games of the 2010-11 campaign, averaging a Big South-best 11.7 steals per contest. Rulers of the Rebounds Liberty led the nation in rebound margin last season, pulling down an average of 13.9 more boards than its opponent in each contest. The Lady Flames outrebounded 32 of their 33 foes in 2009-10, while topping the nation in the category for the third time in program history. National champion UConn ranked second at 12.7 and national runner-up Stanford finished third at 11.8. Liberty previously ranked as the nation’s top rebounding team in both 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames have been listed among the NCAA’s top five squads for rebounding margin for eight consecutive seasons. A Big Uniform to Fill This will be the first season since Carey Green’s first year at the helm, 1999-2000, that a Lady Flame has donned No. 24 on her uniform. Elena Kisseleva wore No. 24 during all four years of her career, before graduating in 2000. She is Liberty’s all-time leading scorer with 2,154 points and was part of the inaugural class inducted into Liberty’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. Jasmine Gardner, a 6-2 freshman forward from Memphis, Tenn., will sport No. 24 this season, as she begins her career with the Lady Flames. A Big Pair of Shoes to Fill Even though only one player is missing from last year’s team, the Lady Flames lost a key component when point guard Amber Mays graduated. Mays started 64 times at point guard during her two seasons with the Lady Flames, pacing the squad in both assists and steals both years. She wrapped up her career in fine fashion, earning a spot on the 2010 Big South Championship all-tournament team. The two players seeing the most playing time at the point guard slot in 2010-11 are senior Dymond Morgan and freshman Emily Frazier. Morgan served as Mays’ backup a year ago, appearing in all 33 contests. She ranked third on the team with 49 steals and tied for third with 46 assists. Meanwhile, Frazier enrolled at Liberty for the spring 2010 semester, but is seeing her first collegiate game action this season. Other options at point guard include senior Rachel McLeod and sophomore Jelena Antic. McLeod opened her Liberty career as a point guard, before shifting to the “2” position during the 2008-09 season. At 6-2, Antic is very tall for a point guard, but did play the position in high school at Liberty Christian Academy and displayed a deft passing ability during her freshman year with the Lady Flames. Gonzaga, which advanced to the Sweet 16 of last year’s NCAA Tournament, was ranked No. 1 to open the year, with Green Bay a close second. I Know What You Did Last Summer The Lady Flames had an eventful and enjoyable summer, highlighted by a trip to Israel spanning late May and early June. During the trip, Liberty competed in the international Friendship Games tournament and won the championship in dominating fashion. The Lady Flames went 5-0, winning their games by an average of 40.2 points per contest. Liberty defeated the Israel Under-20 National Team by an 82-58 count in the title game. Sophomore guard/forward Jelena Antic remained overseas while her teammates returned to the United States, and gained some additional international playing experience. Playing for Macedonia, Antic earned MVP honors in the U20 European Championship for Women Division B. For the tournament, Antic led all players in scoring (25.0 ppg) and rebounding (12.3 rpg), while ranking No. 2 in free throw percentage (.860), No. 3 in steals (3.2 spg), No. 5 in assists (3.3 apg) and No. 6 in blocked shots (1.2 bpg).
