The Games
Liberty will round out play in the South Padre Island Invitational this weekend. The
Flames will first square off against Mississippi Valley State. The matchup marks the second between the two squads, with Liberty defeating the Delta Devils in the Chicago Invitational last season, 72-63. Tipoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. (EST).
Following its game against Mississippi Valley State, the Flames will meet either Georgia Southern or Chicago State on Saturday. Game time is set for 12:30/3 p.m. (EST)
depending on the results of Friday’s games.
Recent Results
Before returning to the road, Liberty returned to the Vines Center on Nov. 18 to play
host to Southern Virginia. Displaying a balanced offensive attack, the Flames stifled the
Knights on the opposite end of the floor en route to an 82-49 victory.
Playing a Big 12 opponent for the first time in four years, the Liberty men’s basketball
team opened play in the South Padre Island Invitational against Texas Tech.
Despite Liberty holding a four-point lead at halftime, a second-half surge by the Red
Raiders allowed Texas Tech to win its opening matchup of the South Padre Island Invitational, 79-71.
Playing in their second contest of the South Padre Island Invitational, the Liberty
Flames paid a visit to the Sun Dome to take on the South Florida Bulls. Unfortunately for
the visiting Flames, they were unable to gain any shooting momentum from the field, as
the Bulls took the contest, 60-43.
Watch and Listen to the Flames
There will be a radio broadcast for each game of the South Padre Island Invitational
which will air on the Flames Sports Network (flagship WRVL 88.3 FM) with Nick Pierce
providing the play-by-play.
In addition to the radio broadcast, an Internet audio broadcast on LibertyFlames.com
will be available.

Record at Liberty: 17-20 (Second Year)
Career Record: 287-213 (18th Year)
Mountain West Conference Championship: 2003
2 NCAA Division II Appearances: 1996 (Sweet 16), 1998
Entering his second season as head coach of the Flames, Dale Layer is the eighth
coach in program history. Layer returned to Liberty Mountain in 2009 after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season.
This is Layer’s third head coaching stint and first since leaving Colorado State in 2007.
Layer, 51, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant coach at
BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette in 2008-09 where he worked with the
guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round appearance in the
NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-American Dominic James,
who injured himself near the end of the season.
Dale Layer first served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping
the Flames to its best regular season finish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Championship.
Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado
State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams
during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his
junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with
the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s first round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were
traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as
the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th
selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were
ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications.
Layer has a career 287-213 record (18th year) as a head coach, including nine seasons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He
also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program
in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel
in the classroom too. In Layer’s 17 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 45
seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100
percent graduation rate of all players who finish their eligibility under Layer.
After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started
his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on
to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except
for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky.
Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coaching job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with
the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they
beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California.
While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In
2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its
first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the first round.

Scouting the Delta Devils
Mississippi Valley State enters Friday’s contest with an 0-4 record. Along with losses
to Georgia (70-72) and Indiana (71-54) Mississippi Valley State is also winless in the South
Padre Island Invitational, suffering defeats to Saint Mary’s (87-52) and Brigham Young (8636).
Jason Holmes leads the Delta Davis with 10.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Terrance Joyner is the team’s second-leading scorer, chipping in 8.3 points per game. Orlando
Smith has proven strong on the boards, grabbing 6.8 per game.
Liberty vs. Mississippi Valley State
For the second straight season, the Flames will duel with the Delta Devils during a
Thanksgiving week invitational. Last season, Liberty and Mississippi Valley State met at the
UCI Pavilion for Game 3 of the 2009 Chicago Invitational. The Flames took the contest, 7253.
Patrick Konan concluded the contest with a near double-double, finishing with 16 points
and nine rebounds. Evan Gordon and Kyle Ohman rounded out the Flames double digit
scorers, posting 14 and 12 tallies, respectively.
Liberty versus the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)
The Delta Devils are just the second opponent Liberty has faced from the SWAC. Prior
to last season, the last time the Flames matched up with a current member of the conference was Dec. 22, 1990 at the Youngstown Holiday Christmas Tournament against Alabama
State. The Hornets defeated the Flames in the contest, 69-57.
Layer versus the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)
With a win over the Delta Devils last season, Layer holds a perfect 4-0 record over current members of the SWAC. As head coach of Colorado State, he picked up his first SWAC
win over Prairie View A&M, 85-73, on Dec. 27, 2002. The following season, on Dec. 4, 2003,
the Rams soundly defeated Texas Southern, 91-66. Layer’s most recent encounter with a
SWAC team occurred in his final season at Colorado State before coming to Liberty as an
assistant. On Dec. 29, 2006, Layer’s Rams edged Alabama State, 61-56.
Coaching Profile: Sean Woods
Sean Woods enters his second year at the helm of the Delta Devil’s basketball program.
A former college basketball standout at Kentucky, Woods, comes to MSVU after most recently serving as director of basketball operations and then assistant coach at TCU.
Woods, who also served as an assistant coach at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi for a
season, began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at High Point (2003-05), where
he assisted in game and practice preparation, player development and scouting, and also
helped coordinate on and off-campus recruiting efforts. During his stint, he helped the Panthers corral the top-ranked recruiting class in the Big South.

Batting 1.000 … Sort of
Through six games this season, David Minaya is a perfect 14-of-14 from the foul line.
The red shirt junior’s hot hand from the foul line includes a career-high 9-for-9 during Liberty’s game against Southern Virginia. Minaya also went 1-for-1 against Virginia Intermont
(Nov. 12), 2-for-2 at Notre Dame (Nov. 14) and 2-for-2 this past Tuesday at USF.
Chairman of the Boards
Redshirt junior transfer John Brown is No. 1 in the conference in rebounds, with 63
rebounds (10. 5 rpg). The Savannah, Ga., native holds a 12 board edge over VMI’s Stan
Okoye who has 51 on the season.
Brown has posted double digits in boards in three games this season. In his Liberty
debut, Brown grabbed 17 rebounds, becoming the first Flame to do so in nearly two years.
The guard also collected 12 rebounds at Notre Dame (Nov. 14) and 14 at Texas Tech
(Nov. 21).
Chasing Dad
After scoring 15 points in Liberty’s contest against USF on Tuesday, Evan Gordon is
approaching 500 career points (459). The sophomore’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr., holds a
place in the Liberty record books as a member of the 1,000-point club with 1,154 career
points. The elder Gordon is 16th all-time on Liberty’s scoring list.
Rebounding Machine
In his Liberty debut against Virginia Intermont (Nov. 12), redshirt junior John Brown
finished with a double-double, posting 18 points and 17 rebounds. The last time a Flame
grabbed that many boards was during the 2008-09 season, Anthony Smith finished with
17 in a 91-80 win at VMI (Jan. 17, 2009). The most rebounds garnered by a Flame in a
single game last season was 15 (Jesse Sanders, vs. VMI, Jan. 28, 2010).
Milestone Man
Jesse Sanders finished with 10 points and seven assists in Liberty’s 82-49 win over
Southern Virginia on Nov.18, allowing him to surpass 500 points and 400 rebounds in
his collegiate career. The junior point guard now has 506 career points (48th all-time at
Liberty) and 405 boards.
With his five assists in last Sunday’s game against Notre Dame, Sanders also surpassed the 300 assist mark. The Sugar Land Texas native now has 315 career assists.
Flames in November
Liberty enters Friday’s game with a 78-78 record in the month of November. The
Flames’ best November record occurred during its NAIA days. During the 1982-83 season, second-year head coach Jeff Meyer, led the Flames to 4-0 record during the 11th
month.
Liberty-Nigeria Connection
Sommy Ogukwe, a 6-7 freshman forward from Abuja, Nigeria, is not the first Liberty
player born in the African nation. In fact, two of the four players whose jerseys are retired
at Liberty are Nigerian natives – Peter Aluma and Julius Nwosu.
Nwosu, who played three seasons for the Flames (1991-1993), is a member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club, finishing his collegiate career with 1,248 points (14th all-time).
Nwosu is also second on Liberty’s all-time list in blocks with 112. The center was the first
Liberty player to ever play in the NBA, suiting up for three different teams – the San Antonio Spurs (1995), the Boston Celtics (1997) and the Utah Jazz (2000). Nwosu is a native
of Imo, Nigeria, which is approximately 372 miles from Ogukwe’s hometown of Abuja.
Aluma, a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Liberty is seventh on Liberty’s
all-time scoring list with 1,715 career points. The former center holds the record for most
blocks in a career by a Liberty payer with 366. In his freshman season with the Flames,
he helped Liberty win its first Big South Championship and advance to its first ever NCAA
Tournament in 1994. In 2008, he became the second Liberty athlete to be inducted into
the Big South Hall of Fame. Aluma is a native of Lagos, Nigeria, which is approximately
466 miles from Abuja.

Brown Knows Best
If the Flames meet Georgia Southern on Saturday, red shirt junior John Brown may
have slight advantage over his teammates. Prior to suiting up for Liberty and playing a
season at Roane State, Brown played for The Citadel during the 2008-09 season. As a
member of the Bulldogs, Brown matched up against the Eagles twice, helping his team
pick up the win in both games.
In the first contest which took place on Jan. 8, 2009, Brown chipped in five points
and 11 rebounds in an 84-75 victory over the Eagles inside McAlister Field House. In the
second meeting on March 2, 2009, the Bulldogs ended the season with a 74-53 road win
over Georgia Southern. Brown once again posted five points while grabbing eight boards.
Layer Versus SoCon/Great West
Saturday’s contest will mark Dale Layer’s second contest against a member of the
Southern contests. During his coaching career, Layer has earned a win over Great West
member Texas Pan-American and a victory over Southern Conference member Chattanooga. In his final season at Colorado State Layer’s Rams defeated Chattanooga on Dec.
30, 2006, 76-65.
Scouting the Cougars
The Cougars are 1-4 on the season with a win over Concordia (79-75) and losses
to DePaul (114-81), Notre Dame (102-62), BYU (109-60) and St. Mary’s (121-52). Scott
Victor is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 11.4 points per game, followed by Christian
Wall and Hajji Martin with 10.2 points per game apiece.
If Liberty Plays Chicago State …
It will be the first meeting with a team from the Great West Conference. In its 38-year history, Liberty has yet to play any of the current members of the Great West.
Great West Experience
One coach on Layer’s staff has ties to a Great West institution. Prior to coming to Liberty, assistant coach Jason Eaker received a bachelor’s degree from Texas Pan-American
and served as the team’s video coordinator during the 2003-04 season.
Thanksgiving Week Inivitationals
Much like this season, Liberty was a participant in a Thanksgiving invitational during
the 2009-10 campaign. Last season, the Flames participated in the Chicago Invitational.
Liberty played the first contest of the Chicago Inivitational at Notre Dame, falling to the
Fighting Irish, 91-72. The Flames then stopped by Northwestern, where the Wildcats held
off Liberty, 69-53.
The Flames wrapped up the invitational at the UIC Pavilion, picking up a 72-53 win
over Mississippi Valley State in the first neutral site meeting. Liberty finished with a 2-2
record on the week, defeating Tennessee State in final matchup, 63-60.

Serving up the Dimes
Jesse Sanders leads the Big South in assists with 39 (6.5 apg). The junior floor general holds a solid lead over VMI’s Rodney Glasgow and UNC Asheville’s Pierre Miller, who
each have 24. Through six games this season, Sanders has garnered at least five assists
each contests.
Sanders is off to his best start in assists this season. During his freshman season
in which he finished with 137 helpers, Sanders had 22 through six games. Last season,
Sanders finished with 152 for the season with 24 through six games.
Stopping the Three
According to the most recent conference statistics, the Flames are ranked No. 1 in
three-point field goal percentage defense. Through the first six contests, Liberty opponents are shooting 29.1 percent (37-for-127) from behind the three-point arc.

Flames No. 1 in Rebound Margin
Along with three-point field goal percentage defense, the Flames are also No. 1 in
rebound margin. Liberty is averaging 41.5 boards per game while holding opponents to 35
per contest for a margin of + 6.5. The Flames have outrebounded three of their opponents
this season – Virginia Intermont, Southern Virginia and Texas Tech. The Flames most the
Flames have been outrebounded by this season is nine, which occurred this past Tuesday
at USF.
Single-game Lows
Forty three is the fewest points posted by Liberty in a game this season, however, the
mark still fell short of making the Liberty record books. On Feb. 12, 1981, Liberty scored
just 30 points against East Tennessee State. The Buccaneers took the contest, 53-30.
Fewest Points Scored
30 – East Tennessee State, 2/12/81
38 – College of Charleston, 1/26/91
39 – Clemson, 11/17/09
40 – Winthrop, 1/13/07
40 – Randolph Macon, 2/8/84
41 – Old Dominion, 11/19/09
The Brothers Sanders
After suiting up for the Flames for two seasons, starting point guard Jesse Sanders is
joined this season by his younger brother, John Caleb. The brothers reunite after playing
two seasons together with the HCYA Warriors (2006-07, 2007-08).
Jesse, who averaged 8.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game last season,
became the first player in Big South and school history to garner two career triple-doubles when he posted 11 points, 10 boards and 10 assists against Kentucky Christian on
Dec. 12. Sanders’ first three-category performance occurred during his freshman season
against Presbyterian College.
Much like Liberty’s floor general, John Caleb has spent his high school career in the
Homeschool Christian Youth Association (HCYA), matching up with the top 5A and prep
schools in the Houston area. During his junior year, he was named to the All Greater
Houston third team, averaging 28 points per game, 8.9 rebounds per game and 4.7 assists per game. John Caleb helped the Warriors win three national homeschool championships, including one with his older brother.
The Only One with Two Threes
Liberty concluded the 2009-10 campaign as the only Division I school in the country
to have two players record a triple-double during the year. The first three category feat
for the Flames occurred on Dec. 12, as Jesse Sanders posted 11 points, 10 boards and
10 assists against Kentucky Christian. In his final season as a Flame, Kyle Ohman also
notched a triple-double, putting up 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a 110-102
victory over VMI on Jan. 2.

New Season, New Voice
Flames fans listening to the radio will hear a new voice this season. On July 6,
Liberty Athletics hired former ISP broadcaster Alan York as its new radio play-by-play
broadcaster for its football and men’s basketball programs.
York will be replacing Liberty’s legendary play-by-play broadcaster Jerry Edwards, who held the position of “Voice of the Flames” for 29 years before retiring
from broadcasting last spring. York will be the fifth person to hold down the position
as the Flames’ play-by-play broadcaster for men’s basketball.
For the past 12 years, York has been an assistant production manager for ISP,
America’s Home for College Sports on the radio for the last two decades.
While at ISP, York was based out of Winston-Salem, N.C., and was the lead
broadcaster for the ACC National Game of the Week in football. He has also gained
experience broadcasting various Wake Forest’s men’s and women’s basketball and
baseball programs.
Home Court Advantage?
The Flames are looking to improve its record at home this season, after finishing
8-6 (.571) inside the Vines Center last season. The winning percentage was the lowest since the 2005-2006 season, when the Flames went 6-7 (.462) at home. Liberty’s
lowest winning percentage inside the Vines Center occurred during the 1990-91
season, when the Flames went 3-8 (.375) during home games. The following season, Liberty turned things around, finishing the season 14-1 at home and claiming
the best winning percentage in the Vines Center (.933).

No Rest in November
For the second straight year, Liberty will once again have a busy November.
This season, the Flames play eight games over a 16-day span during the month of
November, tying the record for the most contests during the month.
Last season, the Flames played an eight-game slate during the 11th month,
finishing with a 3-5 record. Prior to the 2009-10 campaign, the last season in which
Liberty played eight November games was in 1979 during the program’s NAIA days.
The team was coached by Dale Gibson and finished with a 4-4 November record
(28-11 on the season).
Streak Snapped
Liberty’s overtime game with UNC Wilmington this past Tuesday ended a 44-game
streak without an overtime. Prior to Tuesday’s contest, the last time Liberty had went
to an extra period was on Feb. 4, 2009, when the Flames were edged on the road
by Gardner-Webb, 95-90.
All-American Transfer
One new face expected to bring instant experience to the Flames’ roster is redshirt junior guard John Brown. A junior college transfer from Roane State, Brown
averaged a double-double for the Raiders last season, posting 16.7 points while
grabbing 11.0 rebounds per game. The 6-5 Savannah, Ga., native was rewarded for
his efforts last season, earning National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)
All-America second team honors. Before his time at Roane State, Brown suited up
for The Citadel, receiving a spot on the 2008-09 SoCon All-Freshman Team.
