N/A at No. 8/8 Texas A&M AGGIES (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) College Station, Texas - Reed Arena - 8 p.m. Eastern The Game Liberty (2-2, 0-0 Big South) will begin a challenging two-game Texas road swing Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern, when the Lady Flames visit No. 8/8 Texas A&M (2-0, 0-0 Big 12). Liberty’s first-ever contest within the state of Texas will be a matchup between the 2010 Big South champions and the 2010 Big 12 champions. This week’s trip will mark a homecoming of sorts for the Lady Flames’ four Lone Star State natives (Danika Dale, Emily Frazier, Rachel McLeod and Tolu Omotola). Last Time Out The Lady Flames broke open a tight contest with a 13-2 second-half run, Saturday versus Lafayette. Liberty then held off the Leopards for a 64-52 victory, picking up its second straight win at the Vines Center. Jelena Antic led four Lady Flames in double figures with 16 points, while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. A Look Ahead Liberty’s Texas swing will conclude Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern, when the Lady Flames travel to Waco to face No. 2/2 Baylor for the first time in program history. The Bears, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four last season, feature 6-8 sophomore Brittney Griner. She and Liberty’s Devon Brown were two of the four freshmen in the nation to average at least 17.0 ppg and 8.0 last season. Lady Flames On The Air All Lady Flames basketball games may be heard LIVE on WWMC 90.9 FM “The Light.” Jamie Hall, in his 17th year of broadcasting Lady Flames basketball, will handle the courtside play-by-play duties for all games. His teams have averaged 24 victories per year, while becoming a regular fixture in the NCAA Tournament. Green has accumulated a 266-85 record on the Liberty bench, good for a winning percentage of .758. He ranked 10th all-time among NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches in winning percentage to begin the year, ahead of renowned coaching names like Rutgers’ Vivian Stringer, LSU’s Van Chancellor and North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell. More importantly, Liberty has won the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament 10 times with Green as head coach. Liberty has totaled 23 or more victories during nine of those years, including the 2004-05 season, which saw the Lady Flames reach the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history. Green has actually been to the postseason on 22 occasions as a women’s basketball coach, a span which includes a dozen years as an assistant coach at Clemson. In all but one of the 22 appearances, he has experienced the NCAA Tournament. In 2009-10, Liberty made another trip to the “Big Dance,” despite fielding a young team which featured only one senior. The Lady Flames finished the year with a 27-6 record and hoisted the Big South Tournament championship trophy for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons. Rebounding and defense have always been staples of Green-coached teams, and the 2009-10 Lady Flames were certainly no exception. Liberty outrebounded opponents by an average of 13.9 caroms per game, leading the nation in the category. The Lady Flames have now been listed among the nation’s top five teams in rebounding margin for seven straight years. Liberty previously led the nation in the category in 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames also ended the season ranked in the top 10 nationally for scoring defense (second, school-record 50.0 ppg), field goal percentage (second, .482) and scoring margin (seventh, +17.2). A key late-season conference victory over High Point in 2006 made Green the winningest coach in Big South Conference history. He is also Liberty’s career wins leader. The 2004-05 year was a special one on Liberty Mountain, for many reasons. A seniorladen Lady Flames team recorded upset wins over No. 4 seed Penn State (78-70) and No. 5 seed DePaul (88-79) in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second team ever to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed. The Lady Flames ended the season with their highest national ranking to date, 21st (USA Today/ESPN). Green’s track record shows he has the ability to meet those challenges. The Lady Flames have recorded two wins over UNLV, Virginia and West Virginia and solo victories over No. 19 DePaul, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 25 Penn State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest during Green’s tenure. The upset victory over No. 25 Virginia in 2003 marked Liberty’s first win over a Top 25 team. His record against conference foes is equally impressive. He led the Lady Flames on a Big South record 47-game winning streak and currently owns a .914 (171-16) winning percentage against conference teams. Green has marched through conference play with one or fewer setbacks seven times, while guiding the Lady Flames to two undefeated conference seasons. They are 2-0 to start the 2010-11 campaign, after recording comfortable wins over ArkansasLittle Rock (87-41) and Rice (80-40). Danielle Adams, a 6-1 senior forward/center is averaging 25.0 ppg and 10.0 rpg so far this season. She was the 2010 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Other key contributors early on have been 6-0 junior guard Tyra White (12.0 ppg) and 5-6 junior guard Sydney Carter (7.5 ppg, 6.0 apg, 5.0 rpg, 3.0 spg, 0 turnovers). Liberty led the nation in rebound margin last season, but Texas A&M has an early jump on the Lady Flames in 2010-11. The Aggies’ margin thus far is +25.5, while Liberty checks in at +13.8. The Coaching Matchup Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his 12th season with the Lady Flames, and has led his team to 10 Big South titles. A five-time Big South Coach of the Year, Green owns a 266-85 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women’s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.758) ranked 10th all-time among NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches at the season’s outset. Gary Blair is 157-74 in his eighth season at Texas A&M, making him the winningest coach in program history. His overall coaching record stands at 565-237 in 26 seasons, including stints at Stephen F. Austin (1985-93) and Arkansas (1993-2003). Blair is one of only two coaches to take three different teams to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. Liberty-Texas A&M Series Notes Monday’s game will mark the first meeting between Liberty and Texas A&M on the hardwood. However, Liberty redshirt sophomore Tolu Omotola faced the Aggies as a freshman at TCU. On Dec. 21, 2008, Texas A&M defeated the Lady Frogs, 64-50, at Reed Arena. Omotola had one point, two rebounds and one blocked shot in 11 minutes of action. Liberty Versus the Big 12 Conference Liberty is 1-1 versus the current members of the Big 12 Conference, including an 0-1 record versus Iowa State and a 1-0 mark against Kansas State. The Lady Flames will meet Baylor and Texas A&M for the first time this week. The Lady Flames’ victory over Kansas State was a memorable triumph in program history. It came by a 77-56 margin on Dec. 4, 2004, in the championship game of the Commerce Bank Wildcat Tournament. The Wildcats were ranked No. 17/19 nationally at the time. First Time in Texas This week’s road trip marks Liberty’s first visit to Texas in the 36-year history of the women’s basketball program. Liberty’s roster features four Texas natives--Danika Dale (Fort Hood), Emily Frazier (Magnolia), Rachel McLeod (Houston) and Tolu Omotola (Houston). That ties Texas with Virginia as the state which has produced the most current Lady Flames. In addition to playing close to home, McLeod will also enjoy a career milestone on Monday at Texas A&M. She is expected to start at shooting guard, which will begin her 100th appearance in a Liberty uniform. Liberty Versus the Top 25 Texas A&M, ranked No. 8 in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 polls, will be the 35th nationally-ranked opponent Liberty has ever faced. The Lady Flames are 4-30 all-time against Top 25 foes. Here are Liberty’s victories over ranked opponents: Nov. 26, 2002 - 77-69 (OT) win over No. 23 Virginia in Lynchburg, Va. Dec. 4, 2004 - 77-56 win over No. 17/19 Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan. March 20, 2005 - 78-70 win over No. 22/25 Penn State in College Park, Md. (NCAA) March 22, 2005 - 88-79 win over No. 17 DePaul in College Park, Md. (NCAA) Big South/Big 12 Challenge? Liberty is not the only Big South women’s basketball team facing Big 12 opposition this week. In addition to the Lady Flames’ tilts at Texas A&M and Baylor, Charleston Southern will play at Texas Tech on Friday and Gardner-Webb will head to Oklahoma on Saturday. The Big South men’s basketball teams are even getting in on the fun. Liberty’s men’s hoops squad dropped a 79-71 decision at Texas Tech on Sunday. Dominating Defense Liberty tied the Vines Center record and nearly set a program record for fewest points allowed during Tuesday’s home opener against Virginia Union. The Panthers managed only 19 points, on 14.3 percent field goal shooting. Valley Forge also tallied 19 points against Liberty in a 104-19 setback on Jan. 14, 1995. The Lady Flames’ school record of 18 points allowed was set last season, at Winthrop on Feb. 15, 2010. Liberty is yielding only 40.0 ppg through its first four contests, and no opposing team has scored more than 52 points against the Lady Flames so far this year. Bunches of Boards The Lady Flames, who led the nation in rebound margin last season, enjoyed their first truly dominating rebounding performance during Tuesday’s game versus Virginia Union. Liberty posted a +33 rebound margin, corralling 55 boards to the Panthers’ 22. It was the Lady Flames’ largest rebound margin since a +35 mark versus Longwood on Jan. 12, 2010 at the Vines Center. Liberty’s rebound margin now stands at +13.8 through four games. Nifty in November Liberty is 65-39 all-time during the month of November, and the Lady Flames have gone 30-21 during the calendar year’s 11th month with Carey Green as head coach. Last season, the Lady Flames went 5-0 in November. The perfect month was highlighted by winning the Navy Classic championship and also included a win at Lafayette. This year, Liberty has seven November games on the schedule, including road tilts at Top 10 teams Texas A&M (11/22) and Baylor (11/26). The Lady Flames are 2-2 to start the month. Tough Time in Tight Games Liberty lost two close games at the Sheraton Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational, falling by a 40-35 score to Creighton and dropping a 49-46 contest to College of Charleston. The Lady Flames only had four games decided by five points or fewer last season, going 2-2 in close contests. Most notably, Liberty won the 2010 Big South Championship title game by two points (70-68) over Gardner-Webb. Miscellaneous Stats For the 2010-11 Lady Flames Team Scoring Leaders Jelena Antic Avery Warley 3 times 1 time 20-Point Games None Team Rebounding Leaders Avery Warley Jelena Antic Kylee Beecher Tolu Omotola Fantastic First for Frazier It took only four games for Liberty freshman Emily Frazier to earn her first start at the point guard position, and she flourished in her new role on Saturday against Lafayette. Frazier tallied a season-high 11 points and paced the team with three assists. She also drilled five of six free throws during the game’s final 71 seconds to stave off the Leopards’ rally attempts. Frazier is one of six Texas natives expected to start Monday evening, joining teammates Rachel McLeod and Tolu Omotola, as well as Texas A&M’s trio of Maryann Baker, Sydney Carter and Adaora Elonu. 2 times 1 time 1 time 1 time Welcome Back Only one player, senior point guard Amber Mays, graduated from the 2009-10 Liberty team. Meanwhile, Maine’s most recent contest was March 22, 2009, Liberty’s NCAA Tournament game versus Louisville, before she played against Virginia Union on Tuesday. 5-Assist Games Emily Frazier 1 time Team Steal Leaders Jelena Antic Emily Frazier Dymond Morgan 2 times 1 time 1 time 3-Steal Games Jelena Antic Emily Frazier Danika Dale Rachel McLeod Tolu Omotola 2 times 2 times 1 time 1 time 1 time Team Blocked Shot Leaders Tolu Omotola Kylee Beecher Brittany Campbell 2 times 1 time 1 time 3-Block Games Tolu Omotola 1 time Including Ties Single-Game Highs For the 2010-11 Lady Flames Points - 17 Jelena Antic Nov. 16 vs. Virginia Union Rebounds - 13 Avery Warley Nov. 16 vs. Virginia Union Assists - 6 Emily Frazier Nov. 16 vs. Virginia Union Steals - 5 Jelena Antic Nov. 16 vs. Virginia Union Blocked Shots - 3 Tolu Omotola Nov. 13 vs. College of Charleston Liberty Versus Non-Conference Opposition After its 2-2 start to the 2010-11 campaign, Liberty’s all-time non-conference record is now 278-299. Liberty’s best-ever season against non-conference foes came in 1997-98, when the Lady Flames went 14-1 outside the Big South. Liberty’s lone non-conference setback that season came to eventual national champion Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Lady Flames to Face Wide Variety of Non-Conference Foes Liberty is scheduled to match up with opponents from eight different conferences this season, including Big 12 (Baylor & Texas A&M), BIG EAST (St. John’s), CAA (James Madison & VCU), CIAA (Virginia Union), MEAC (North Carolina Central), MVC (Creighton), Patriot (Lafayette), Southern Conference (College of Charleston) and WVIAC (Glenville State) foes. Depending on how the Terrapin Classic plays out, the Lady Flames could also face teams from the ACC (Maryland) or the Atlantic-10 (La Salle). Piling Up the Postseason Qualifiers Liberty could play as many as 13 games against teams which qualified for postseason tournaments in 2009-10. The Lady Flames’ potential opponents this year include four NCAA Tournament qualifiers (Baylor, James Madison, St. John’s and Texas A&M), four WNIT qualifiers (Creighton, Gardner-Webb, Maryland and VCU) and two WBI qualifiers (Charleston Southern and College of Charleston). The Lady Flames will host Charleston Southern on Jan. 24 and Gardner-Webb on Feb. 12. Other than those two contests, the rest of Liberty’s matchups with 2009-10 postseason teams will be played away from the Vines Center. Road Warriors It is somewhat appropriate that Liberty tipped off the 2010-11 campaign with a pair of contests away from home. The Lady Flames are only slated to play 11 of their 29 games at the Vines Center this season, with a challenging slate of road tilts on the schedule. Liberty will play a trio of home games during November, before going 47 days between contests at the Vines Center. By the time the Lady Flames return home to play Radford on Jan. 17, the team will have played nine consecutive road games. It is the team’s longest stretch of games away from Lynchburg since a 10-game road swing during the 1991-92 season. Liberty’s Record ... The Lady Flames’ most recent overtime victory came on Jan. 6, 2004, when Liberty defeated American, 76-72, on the road in double overtime. No current Lady Flame has won an overtime contest in college. Liberty’s most recent overtime contest at the Vines Center was a memorable one. The Lady Flames defeated Virginia, 77-69, in overtime on Nov. 26, 2002, to claim their firstever win over the Cavaliers. It also marked Liberty’s first win over a ranked opponent, as Virginia entered the game with a No. 23 national ranking. Her career-high four three-pointers were the most by a Lady Flame since Jan. 31, 2009, when Rachel Hammond drained five triples against High Point. The sophomore also came up with a career-best five steals. It was the first time a Liberty player recorded four three-pointers and four steals in the same game since Dec. 4, 2004, when Kristal Tharp accomplished the feat at Kansas State. Wanted for Theft Last season, Liberty ranked No. 14 nationally in steals per game (11.4 spg) and tied the program record with 377 steals. The Lady Flames have also been active on the defensive end during the first four games of the 2010-11 campaign, averaging 12.8 steals per contest. Jelena Antic has led the way with 12 thefts thus far. Rulers of the Rebounds Liberty led the nation in rebound margin last season, pulling down an average of 13.9 more boards than its opponent in each contest. The Lady Flames outrebounded 32 of their 33 foes in 2009-10, while topping the nation in the category for the third time in program history. National champion UConn ranked second at 12.7 and national runner-up Stanford finished third at 11.8. Liberty previously ranked as the nation’s top rebounding team in both 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames have been listed among the NCAA’s top five squads for rebounding margin for eight consecutive seasons. Among the Nation’s Finest In addition to topping the nation in rebound margin, the Lady Flames finished inside the top 25 in seven other statistical categories. Liberty finished the year No. 2 nationally in both scoring defense (50.0 ppg) and field goal percentage (.482), trailing only UConn in both categories. The Lady Flames also ended up No. 7 in scoring margin (+17.2), No. 14 in steals per game (11.4 spg), No. 17 in won-lost percentage (.818), No. 20 in field goal percentage defense (.354) and No. 21 in three-point field goal percentage defense (.284). A Big Uniform to Fill This will be the first season since Carey Green’s first year at the helm, 1999-2000, that a Lady Flame has donned No. 24 on her uniform. Elena Kisseleva wore No. 24 during all four years of her career, before graduating in 2000. She is Liberty’s all-time leading scorer with 2,154 points and was part of the inaugural class inducted into Liberty’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. Jasmine Gardner, a 6-2 freshman forward from Memphis, Tenn., will sport No. 24 this season, as she begins her career with the Lady Flames. A Big Pair of Shoes to Fill Even though only one player is missing from last year’s team, the Lady Flames lost a key component when point guard Amber Mays graduated. Mays started 64 times at point guard during her two seasons with the Lady Flames, pacing the squad in both assists and steals both years. She wrapped up her career in fine fashion, earning a spot on the 2010 Big South Championship all-tournament team. The two players seeing the most playing time at the point guard slot in 2010-11 are senior Dymond Morgan and freshman Emily Frazier. Morgan served as Mays’ backup a year ago, appearing in all 33 contests. She ranked third on the team with 49 steals and tied for third with 46 assists. Meanwhile, Frazier enrolled at Liberty for the spring 2010 semester, but is seeing her first collegiate game action this season. Other options at point guard include senior Rachel McLeod and sophomore Jelena Antic. McLeod opened her Liberty career as a point guard, before shifting to the “2” position during the 2008-09 season. At 6-2, Antic is very tall for a point guard, but did play the position in high school at Liberty Christian Academy and displayed a deft passing ability during her freshman year with the Lady Flames. I Know What You Did Last Summer The Lady Flames had an eventful and enjoyable summer, highlighted by a trip to Israel spanning late May and early June. During the trip, Liberty competed in the international Friendship Games tournament and won the championship in dominating fashion. The Lady Flames went 5-0, winning their games by an average of 40.2 points per contest. Liberty defeated the Israel Under-20 National Team by an 82-58 count in the title game. Sophomore guard/forward Jelena Antic remained overseas while her teammates returned to the United States, and gained some additional international playing experience. Playing for Macedonia, Antic earned MVP honors in the U20 European Championship for Women Division B. For the tournament, Antic led all players in scoring (25.0 ppg) and rebounding (12.3 rpg), while ranking No. 2 in free throw percentage (.860), No. 3 in steals (3.2 spg), No. 5 in assists (3.3 apg) and No. 6 in blocked shots (1.2 bpg).
