The Games
The Liberty men’s basketball team returns to action on Sunday, as the Flames make
a stop in Lubbock, Texas to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The matchup marks
the Flames’ opening contest of the South Padre Island Invitational and the first meeting
between Liberty and Texas Tech. Game time inside the United Spirit Arena is slated for 2
p.m. (EST).
Following their stop in Lubbock, the Flames head to Tampa, Fla., before returning to
Texas to wrap up the invitational. In its second matchup of the SPI Invitational, Liberty will
square off with BIG EAST member South Florida on Tuesday. Tipoff inside the Bulls’ Sun
Dome is set for 7 p.m.
Recent Results
Looking to bounce back from a tough road loss to Notre Dame last Sunday, the Liberty men’s basketball team stepped into Trask Coliseum, Tuesday night, to take on CAA
member UNC Wilmington. After being down 14 points at halftime, the Flames rallied with
a 21-2 run to take the lead in the second half.
However, the Seahawks rallied from being eight points down in the closing minutes of
regulation to send the game into overtime and ultimately edge the Flames by five, 69-64.
Before returning to the road, Liberty returned to the Vines Center, Thursday night, to
play host to Southern Virginia. Displaying a balanced offensive attack, the Flames stifled
the Knights on the opposite end of the floor en route to an 82-49 victory.
Watch and Listen to the Flames
There will be a radio broadcast for each game of the South Padre Island Invitational
which will air on the Flames Sports Network (flagship WRVL 88.3 FM) with Nick Pierce
providing the play-by-play.

Record at Liberty: 17-18 (Second Year)

2 NCAA Division II Appearances: 1996 (Sweet 16), 1998
Entering his second season as head coach of the Flames, Dale Layer is the eighth
coach in program history. Layer returned to Liberty Mountain in 2009 after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season.
This is Layer’s third head coaching stint and first since leaving Colorado State in 2007.
Layer, 51, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant coach at
BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette in 2008-09 where he worked with the
guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round appearance in the
NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-American Dominic James,
who injured himself near the end of the season.
Dale Layer first served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping
the Flames to its best regular season finish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Championship.
Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado
State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams
during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his
junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with
the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s first round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were
traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as
the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th
selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were
ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications.
Layer has a career 287-211 record (18th year) as a head coach, including nine seasons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He
also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program
in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel
in the classroom too. In Layer’s 17 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 45
seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100
percent graduation rate of all players who finish their eligibility under Layer.
After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started
his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on
to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except
for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky.
Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coaching job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with
the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they
beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California.
While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In
2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its
first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the first round.

Singletary (15.0 ppg, 6.8 rpg), John Roberson (14.5 ppg, 2.3 rpg) and D’wayln Roberts (7.0
ppg, 6.2 rpg). Texas Tech reached the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament
(NIT) last season, falling to Ole Miss in double overtime, 90-87.
Texas Tech enters Sunday’s contest with a 2-1 record this season. The Red Raiders
opened the season inside the United Spirit Arena with an 86-67 win over the University of
Louisiana at Monroe on Nov. 12. This past Tuesday, the Red Raiders traveled to North Texas
where they were defeated, 92-83. On Friday, Texas Tech returned home to host Stephen F.
Austin, taking the contest, 70-58.
Forward Robert Lewandowski led the Red Raiders with 20 points, followed by John
Roberson, who chipped in 15 tallies. Mike Singletary finished with a near double-double,
posting 11 points and nine boards.
Through three games this season, Brad Reese leads the Red Raiders averaging 14.0
points per game, followed by Lewandowski with 12 points per contest. Three players are
currently averaging 11.3 points per game – Singletary, Roberson and David Tairu.
Coaching Profile: Pat Knight
Coach Pat Knight begins his third full season as the Texas Tech head coach and his tenth
season with the Red Raiders. Knight became the head coach for the Red Raiders on Feb.
4, 2008, taking over for his father and legendary coach Bob Knight, who holds the record for
the most wins in Division I history with 902. As a collegiate player and nearly nine seasons
as an assistant coach, Pat was on the sidelines as a player or as a coach for 308 of Bob
Knight’s 902 career wins.
After his four year collegiate playing career at Indiana, Pat Knight joined the staff of the
NBA’s Phoenix Suns where he served as an administrative assistant and scout. In 1997, he
was an assistant coach to the CBA’s Connecticut Pride.
In 1998, Pat Knight was named to his first head coaching position as the leader of the
Wisconsin Blast of the International Basketball Association. After a 3-5 start, Pat led his
team to a 16-10 record over the last 26 games for a 19-15 record, the fourth best mark in the
league.

Chasing Dad
After scoring nine points in Liberty’s contest against Notre Dame on Sunday, Evan
Gordon now has over 400 career points (426). The sophomore’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr.,
holds a place in the Liberty record books as a member of the 1,000-point club with 1,154
career points. The elder Gordon is 16th all-time on Liberty’s scoring list.
Rebounding Machine
In his Liberty debut against Virginia Intermont (Nov. 12), redshirt junior John Brown
finished with a double-double, posting 18 points and 17 rebounds. The last time a Flame
grabbed that many boards was during the 2008-09 season, Anthony Smith finished with
17 in a 91-80 win at VMI (Jan. 17, 2009). The most rebounds garnered by a Flame in a
single game last season was 15 (Jesse Sanders, vs. VMI, Jan. 28, 2010).
Milestone Man
Jesse Sanders finished with 10 points and seven assists in Liberty’s 82-49 win over

Liberty-Nigeria Connection
Sommy Ogukwe, a 6-7 freshman forward from Abuja, Nigeria, is not the first Liberty
player born in the African nation. In fact, two of the four players whose jerseys are retired
at Liberty are Nigerian natives – Peter Aluma and Julius Nwosu.
Nwosu, who played three seasons for the Flames (1991-1993), is a member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club, finishing his collegiate career with 1,248 points (14th all-time).
Nwosu is also second on Liberty’s all-time list in blocks with 112. The center was the first
Liberty player to ever play in the NBA, suiting up for three different teams – the San Antonio Spurs (1995), the Boston Celtics (1997) and the Utah Jazz (2000). Nwosu is a native
of Imo, Nigeria, which is approximately 372 miles from Ogukwe’s hometown of Abuja.
Aluma, a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Liberty is seventh on Liberty’s
all-time scoring list with 1,715 career points. The former center holds the record for most
blocks in a career by a Liberty payer with 366. In his freshman season with the Flames,
he helped Liberty win its first Big South Championship and advance to its first ever NCAA
Tournament in 1994. In 2008, he became the second Liberty athlete to be inducted into
the Big South Hall of Fame. Aluma is a native of Lagos, Nigeria, which is approximately

Last season, the Bulls finished with a 20-13 record and a 9-9 posting in BIG EAST
action en route to an appearance in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). The Bulls
were edged in the opening round of the tournament by ACC member N.C. State, 58-57.
South Florida returns two starters from last season’s squad – Jarrid Famous (10.4
ppg, 7.4 rpg) and Toarly Fitzpatrick (4.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg).
Coaching Profile: Stan Heath
Stan Heath (154-133, 41-54 BIG EAST) is in his fourth season as head coach at
South Florida. During his third season in Tampa, Heath led the Bulls to South Florida’s
third 20-win season ever with a 20-13 record, and returned to the postseason for the first
time since 2002 as the Bulls hosted NC State in the first round of the National Invitation
Tournament.
Prior to coming to Tampa, Heath served as head coach at Arkansas (2002-2007) and
Kent State (2001-02).
Liberty Versus the BIG EAST
The Flames are 0-7 against current members of the BIG EAST. Liberty is 0-1 against
DePaul, 0-2 against Notre Dame 0-1 against Providence and 0-3 against Seton Hall.
Layer Versus South Florida
Head coach Dale Layer enters the Sun Dome with an unblemished 2-0 record against
South Florida. Layer’s pair of wins verus the Bulls occurred during his tenure at Colorado
State. During the 2002-03 season, Layer’s Rams defeated the Bulls, 80-72, inside Colorado State’s Moby Arena. The following season, the Rams edged the Bulls, 66-65, in the
Sun Dome.
Home Sweet Home (Part 2)
The Sanders brothers are not the only Flames who will be returning to their home
state during the South Padre Invitational. Two Liberty players hail from Florida, the state
where the Flames will play their second matchup of the tournament – guard David Minaya
and center Joel Vander Pol. Minaya’s hometown of Riverview, Fla., is approximately 15
miles from Tampa, Fla., while Vander Pol’s hometown of Fort Myers, Fla., is about 130
miles from Tampa.
Alma Mater Exhibition
Prior to officially tipping off the 2010-11 season , the Bulls played an exhibition game
against Division II member Eckerd College, the alma mater of Liberty head coach Dale
Layer. South Florida won the exhibition, defeating the Tritons, 75-58.

All-American Transfer
One new face expected to bring instant experience to the Flames’ roster is redshirt
junior guard John Brown. A junior college transfer from Roane State, Brown averaged a
double-double for the Raiders last season, posting 16.7 points while grabbing 11.0 rebounds per game. The 6-5 Savannah, Ga., native was rewarded for his efforts last season, earning National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-America second
team honors. Before his time at Roane State, Brown suited up for The Citadel, receiving
a spot on the 2008-09 SoCon All-Freshman Team.
The Brothers Sanders
After suiting up for the Flames for two seasons, starting point guard Jesse Sanders is
joined this season by his younger brother, John Caleb. The brothers reunite after playing
two seasons together with the HCYA Warriors (2006-07, 2007-08).
Jesse, who averaged 8.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game last season,
became the first player in Big South and school history to garner two career triple-doubles when he posted 11 points, 10 boards and 10 assists against Kentucky Christian on
Dec. 12. Sanders’ first three-category performance occurred during his freshman season
against Presbyterian College.
Much like Liberty’s floor general, John Caleb has spent his high school career in the
Homeschool Christian Youth Association (HCYA), matching up with the top 5A and prep
schools in the Houston area. During his junior year, he was named to the All Greater
Houston third team, averaging 28 points per game, 8.9 rebounds per game and 4.7 assists per game. John Caleb helped the Warriors win three national homeschool championships, including one with his older brother.
Burrus is Back
Along with guards Jesse Sanders and Evan Gordon, sophomore forward Antwan Burrus will take the court as a returning starter for Liberty this season.
After seeing limited action the first 10 contests of the 2009-10 campaign, the 6-6 forward turned heads in Liberty’s game against Kentucky Christian on Dec. 12, posting 15
points, five rebounds and two blocks in just 12 minutes of play.
In Liberty’s first 10 contests last season, Burrus averaged 3.0 minutes, 2.0 points and
0.8 rebounds per game. From Burrus’ breakout game through the remainder of the season, his numbers drastically increased, averaging 22.3 minutes, 8.9 points and 5.4 boards
over the remaining 21 games for the Flames.
Burrus started the final 16 games of the season in the five spot for the Flames. During
Liberty’s home game against VMI on Jan. 28, the Winterville, N.C., native finished with a
career-high 20 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in a 91-73 Flames victory.
The Only One with Two Threes
Liberty concluded the 2009-10 campaign as the only Division I school in the country
to have two players record a triple-double during the year. The first three category feat
for the Flames occurred on Dec. 12, as Jesse Sanders posted 11 points, 10 boards and
10 assists against Kentucky Christian. In his final season as a Flame, Kyle Ohman also
notched a triple-double, putting up 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a 110-102
victory over VMI on Jan. 2.
No Rest in November
For the second straight year, Liberty will once again have a busy November. This
season, the Flames play eight games over a 16-day span during the month of November,
tying the record for the most contests during the month.
Last season, the Flames played an eight-game slate during the 11th month, finishing
with a 3-5 record. Prior to the 2009-10 campaign, the last season in which Liberty played
eight November games was in 1979 during the program’s NAIA days. The team was
coached by Dale Gibson and finished with a 4-4 November record (28-11 on the season).
Streak Snapped
Liberty’s overtime game with UNC Wilmington this past Tuesday ended a 44-game streak
without an overtime. Prior to Tuesday’s contest, the last time Liberty had went to an extra
period was on Feb. 4, 2009, when the Flames were edged on the road by Gardner-Webb,
95-90.

Stepping Up
Liberty will look for someone to take charge in the scoring department this season, after losing leading scorer Kyle Ohman. The recent graduate finished his career
at Liberty with 1,141 career points, 14 shy of passing Eric Gordon’s mark of 1,154.
Coincidentally, the leading candidate to fill Ohman’s shoes is Eric’s son Evan Gordon, who was Liberty’s second leading scorer last season with 372 points (12.0
ppg).
Dishing It Out
Point guard Jesse Sanders finished with 152 assists (4.9 apg) last season, ranking 48th in the country in helpers. The floor general also ranked third in the Big
South, behind UNC Asheville’s J.P. Primm (172) and Radford’s Amir Johnson (166).
In his sophomore year, Sanders bested his previous season total of 137, which
stands as the most helpers by a Liberty freshman.
New Season, New Voice
Flames fans listening to the radio will hear a new voice this season. On July 6,
Liberty Athletics hired former ISP broadcaster Alan York as its new radio play-by-play
broadcaster for its football and men’s basketball programs.
York will be replacing Liberty’s legendary play-by-play broadcaster Jerry Edwards, who held the position of “Voice of the Flames” for 29 years before retiring
from broadcasting last spring. York will be the fifth person to hold down the position
as the Flames’ play-by-play broadcaster for men’s basketball.
For the past 12 years, York has been an assistant production manager for ISP,
America’s Home for College Sports on the radio for the last two decades.
While at ISP, York was based out of Winston-Salem, N.C., and was the lead
broadcaster for the ACC National Game of the Week in football. He has also gained
experience broadcasting various Wake Forest’s men’s and women’s basketball and
baseball programs.
Solid at the Line
Liberty finished the 2009-10 season with a productive year at the foul line, shooting 70.0 percent (468 of 669) from the charity stripe. The Flames finished the season
as the Big South’s leader in free throw percentage.
Home Court Advantage?
The Flames are looking to improve its record at home this season, after finishing
8-6 (.571) inside the Vines Center last season. The winning percentage was the lowest since the 2005-2006 season, when the Flames went 6-7 (.462) at home. Liberty’s
lowest winning percentage inside the Vines Center occurred during the 1990-91
season, when the Flames went 3-8 (.375) during home games. The following season, Liberty turned things around, finishing the season 14-1 at home and claiming
the best winning percentage in the Vines Center (.933).
