The Games
The Liberty men’s basketball team continues its busy November on Tuesday. The Flames

Coliseum is slated for 7 p.m.
Following its trip to the Tar Heel State, Liberty returns to the Vines Center to host
Southern Virginia on Thursday. The Flames hold a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series
against the Commonwealth competitor. Last season, Liberty defended home court against
the Knights on Nov. 14, 2009, taking the contest 89-53. Game time for Thursday’s meeting
is set for 7 p.m.
Recent Results
Liberty opened the 2010-11 season inside the Vines Center last Friday, defeating the
Virginia Intermont Cobras, 82-65. Evan Gordon led the Flames with 23 points, followed
by redshirt junior transfer John Brown, who finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds in his
Liberty debut. The Flames are now 30-9 all-time in home openers and 17-3 when opening
the season at home.
Following its win, the Flames trekked up to South Bend, Ind., to take on BIG EAST
power Notre Dame. Hoping to even the series at 1-1, Notre Dame denied Liberty for the
second-straight year en route to a 72-51 decision. David Minaya led the Flames with 12
points, while Brown garnered his second straight double-double, finishing with 10 points
and 12 boards.
Watch and Listen to the Flames
There will be a radio broadcast for each game which will air on the Flames Sports
Network (flagship WRVL 88.3 FM) with the new Voice of the Flames Alan York providing

Record at Liberty: 16-18 (Second Year)
Career Record: 286-211 (18th Year)
Mountain West Conference Championship: 2003
2 NCAA Division II Appearances: 1996 (Sweet 16), 1998
Entering his second season as head coach of the Flames, Dale Layer is the eighth
coach in program history. Layer returned to Liberty Mountain in 2009 after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season.
This is Layer’s third head coaching stint and first since leaving Colorado State in 2007.
Layer, 51, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant coach at
BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette in 2008-09 where he worked with the
guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round appearance in the
NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-American Dominic James,
who injured himself near the end of the season.
Dale Layer first served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping
the Flames to its best regular season finish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Championship.
Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado
State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams
during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his
junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with
the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s first round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were
traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as
the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th
selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were
ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications.
Layer has a career 286-210 record (18th year) as a head coach, including nine seasons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He
also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program
in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel
in the classroom too. In Layer’s 17 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 45
seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100
percent graduation rate of all players who finish their eligibility under Layer.
After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started
his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on
to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except
for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky.
Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coaching job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with
the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they
beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California.
While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In
2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its
first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the first round.

Flying with the Seahawks
The Seahawks are picked to finish 12th in the CAA after finishing the 2009-10 season
with a 9-22 overall and a 5-13 posting in conference play. The Seahawks return their leading
scorer Chad Tomko (12.8 ppg), as well as starters Ahmad Grant (8.1 ppg) and Keith Rendleman (5.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg). UNC Wilmington lost two starters from the 2009-10 squad – secondleading scorer and leading rebounder, John Fields (10.2 ppg, 8.7 rpg) and Johnny Wolf (7.9
ppg)
UNC Wilmington opened its season with a tough test, paying a visit to Gainesville, Fla.,
to take on No.9 Florida inside the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. The SEC power successfully defended its home turf, defeating the Seahawks, 77-60. Tomko led UNC Wilmington
with 15 points, followed by Trevor Deloach, who chipped in 14 tallies off the bench. Rendleman rounded out UNC Wilmington’s double digit scorers with 11 points.
In the contest, the Seahawks shot 23-of-48 (47.9 percent) from the field, 6-of-16 (37.5)
from the three-point arc and 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. However, the Gators shot 49.1
percent from the field (28-of-57) and hit 15-of-22 shots from the free throw line. The Seahawks also struggled on the glass, as the Gators outrebounded UNC Wilmington, 36-22.
Coaching Profile: Buzz Peterson
The 2010-11 season marks Buzz Peterson’s first year at the helm of UNC Wilmington’s
men’s basketball program. Now in his 13th year as a head coach, Peterson currently holds
a 225-148 career record. Before becoming the Seahawks ninth head coach in program history, served as head coach at Appalachian State during the 2009-10 season, leading the
Mountaineers to a 24-13 record and a trip to the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The brief stint marked Peterson’s second as head coach of Appalachian State, as
he manned the program’s helm four previous seasons (1996-2000).
In addition to coaching the Mountaineers, Peterson also served as head coach at Big
South member Coastal Carolina (2005-07), Tennessee (2001-05), and Tulsa (2000-01). After his two-year stay at Coastal Carolina, Peterson worked for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats
as the franchise’s Director of Player Personnel.
Along with his head coaching experience, Peterson was also an assistant coach at Appalachian State (1987-1989), East Tennessee State (1989-90), N.C. State (1990-93) and
Vanderbilt (1993-1996)

Chasing Dad
After scoring nine points in Liberty’s contest against Notre Dame on Sunday, Evan
Gordon now has over 400 career points (404). The sophomore’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr.,
holds a place in the Liberty record books as a member of the 1,000-point club with 1,154
career points. The elder Gordon is 16th all-time on Liberty’s scoring list.
Rebounding Machine
In his Liberty debut, redshirt junior John Brown finished with a double-double, posting
18 points and 17 rebounds. The last time a Flame grabbed that many boards was during
the 2008-09 season, Anthony Smith finished with 17 in a 91-80 win at VMI (Jan. 17, 2009).
The most rebounds garnered by a Flame in a single game last season was 15 (Jesse
Sanders, vs. VMI, Jan. 28, 2010).
Milestone Man
With his five assists in Sunday’s game against Notre Dame, point guard Jesse Sanders has now surpassed the 300 assist mark. The Sugar Land Texas native now has 301
career assists. Sanders is also approaching two other career milestones, as he currently
has 490 points and 389 rebounds.
Flames in November
Liberty enters Tuesday’s game with a 77-75 record in the month of November. The
Flames’ best November record occurred during its NAIA days. During the 1982-83 season, second-year head coach Jeff Meyer, led the Flames to 4-0 record during the 11th
month.
Liberty-Nigeria Connection
Sommy Ogukwe, a 6-7 freshman forward from Abuja, Nigeria, is not the first Liberty
player born in the African nation. In fact, two of the four players whose jerseys are retired
at Liberty are Nigerian natives – Peter Aluma and Julius Nwosu.
Nwosu, who played three seasons for the Flames (1991-1993), is a member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club, finishing his collegiate career with 1,248 points (14th all-time).
Nwosu is also second on Liberty’s all-time list in blocks with 112. The center was the first
Liberty player to ever play in the NBA, suiting up for three different teams – the San Antonio Spurs (1995), the Boston Celtics (1997) and the Utah Jazz (2000). Nwosu is a native
of Imo, Nigeria, which is approximately 372 miles from Ogukwe’s hometown of Abuja.
Aluma, a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Liberty is seventh on Liberty’s
all-time scoring list with 1,715 career points. The former center holds the record for most
blocks in a career by a Liberty payer with 366. In his freshman season with the Flames,
he helped Liberty win its first Big South Championship and advance to its first ever NCAA
Tournament in 1994. In 2008, he became the second Liberty athlete to be inducted into
the Big South Hall of Fame. Aluma is a native of Lagos, Nigeria, which is approximately
466 miles from Abuja.

Liberty-Southern Virginia Series Notes
Thursday’s matchup marks the third meeting all-time between Liberty and Southern
Virginia. Last season, Liberty hosted the Knights in its home opener, defeating Southern
Virginia, 89-53. Four Flames reached double digits in the contest. Kyle Ohman led the
way with 15, followed by Chris Perez (14), Tyler Baker (13) and Evan Gordon (11). The
majority of Ohman’s tallies came from the foul line, as he was a perfect 10-for-10 from the
charity stripe.
The first meeting between the two teams took place on Nov. 27, 2006, with Liberty
defeating the Knights inside the Vines Center, 109-64.
Scouting the Knights
Southern Virginia enters Thursday’s contest with a 1-2 record. After defeating Virginia
Intermont on Nov. 10, 86-77, Southern Virginia is coming off back-to-back losses against
Union College (77-66), and Reinhardt (80-77).
Casey Nye is guiding the Knights this season, averaging 19.0 points per game, followed by Spenser Briggs (14.7 ppg) and Isaac Jacobson (12.0). Briggs is also the Knights
leading rebounder, averaging 7.3 boards per game.
Back in the Day
Like Virginia Intermont, Liberty is no stranger to competing in the National Association
of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Before moving up the ranks to Division I play, Liberty
joined the NAIA in 1975 as an associate member. The program transitioned to NCAA Division II in 1981, but was still eligible for NAIA postseason play. Prior to receiving its NAIA
postseason eligibility, the Flames captured the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Championship in 1980.
Liberty dropped its NAIA affiliation completely in 1984, when it became eligible for
NCAA Division II competition. Liberty moved to Division I on Sept. 1, 1988.
During its time in the association, Liberty produced one NAIA All-American, center
Steve Issacs, who earned honorable mention honors in 1982 and 1983. Issacs also
earned all-district honors from 1981-83. Other Liberty players to earn NAIA all-district
honors include Mark Swift (1981), Greg McCauley (1982) and Kenny Gunn (1983). Former Liberty men’s head coach Jeff Meyer, who coached the Flames from 1982-97, also
earned NAIA All-District Coach of the Year Honors in 1982.
Young versus Younger
Despite its 38-year existence, Liberty is considered a youngling compared to most
universities. Southern Virginia is no exception, as it was founded 25 years after Liberty in
1996.
Matching Opponents
Like the Flames, the Southern Virginia Knights also opened the 2010-11 season
matching up against the Cobras of Virginia Intermont. Last Friday, Southern Virginia paid
a visit to Union College (Ky.), a team Liberty will host on Dec. 28. On Nov. 23, the Knights
will play a common opponent of Liberty’s – Big South member VMI. The Flames, of course,
will matchup with the Keydets twice during Big South play (Jan. 20 and Feb. 15).

All-American Transfer
One new face expected to bring instant experience to the Flames’ roster is redshirt
junior guard John Brown. A junior college transfer from Roane State, Brown averaged a
double-double for the Raiders last season, posting 16.7 points while grabbing 11.0 rebounds per game. The 6-5 Savannah, Ga., native was rewarded for his efforts last season, earning National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-America second
team honors. Before his time at Roane State, Brown suited up for The Citadel, receiving
a spot on the 2008-09 SoCon All-Freshman Team.
The Brothers Sanders
After suiting up for the Flames for two seasons, starting point guard Jesse Sanders is
joined this season by his younger brother, John Caleb. The brothers reunite after playing
two seasons together with the HCYA Warriors (2006-07, 2007-08).
Jesse, who averaged 8.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game last season,
became the first player in Big South and school history to garner two career triple-doubles when he posted 11 points, 10 boards and 10 assists against Kentucky Christian on
Dec. 12. Sanders’ first three-category performance occurred during his freshman season
against Presbyterian College.
Much like Liberty’s floor general, John Caleb has spent his high school career in the
Homeschool Christian Youth Association (HCYA), matching up with the top 5A and prep
schools in the Houston area. During his junior year, he was named to the All Greater
Houston third team, averaging 28 points per game, 8.9 rebounds per game and 4.7 assists per game. John Caleb helped the Warriors win three national homeschool championships, including one with his older brother.
Burrus is Back
Along with guards Jesse Sanders and Evan Gordon, sophomore forward Antwan Burrus will take the court as a returning starter for Liberty this season.
After seeing limited action the first 10 contests of the 2009-10 campaign, the 6-6 forward turned heads in Liberty’s game against Kentucky Christian on Dec. 12, posting 15
points, five rebounds and two blocks in just 12 minutes of play.
In Liberty’s first 10 contests last season, Burrus averaged 3.0 minutes, 2.0 points and
0.8 rebounds per game. From Burrus’ breakout game through the remainder of the season, his numbers drastically increased, averaging 22.3 minutes, 8.9 points and 5.4 boards
over the remaining 21 games for the Flames.
Burrus started the final 16 games of the season in the five spot for the Flames. During
Liberty’s home game against VMI on Jan. 28, the Winterville, N.C., native finished with a
career-high 20 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in a 91-73 Flames victory.
The Only One with Two Threes
Liberty concluded the 2009-10 campaign as the only Division I school in the country
to have two players record a triple-double during the year. The first three category feat
for the Flames occurred on Dec. 12, as Jesse Sanders posted 11 points, 10 boards and
10 assists against Kentucky Christian. In his final season as a Flame, Kyle Ohman also
notched a triple-double, putting up 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a 110-102
victory over VMI on Jan. 2.
No Rest in November
For the second straight year, Liberty will once again have a busy November. This
season, the Flames play eight games over a 16-day span during the month of November,
tying the record for the most contests during the month.
Last season, the Flames played an eight-game slate during the 11th month, finishing
with a 3-5 record. Prior to the 2009-10 campaign, the last season in which Liberty played
eight November games was in 1979 during the program’s NAIA days. The team was
coached by Dale Gibson and finished with a 4-4 November record (28-11 on the season).
Regular 9-5
Liberty has played 44 games without an overtime, dating back to the 2008-09 season.
That season, the Flames played in five overtime contests, four of which went into double
overtime. The last time Liberty played an extra period was on Feb. 4, 2009, when the
Flames were edged on the road by Gardner-Webb, 95-90.

Stepping Up
Liberty will look for someone to take charge in the scoring department this season, after losing leading scorer Kyle Ohman. The recent graduate finished his career
at Liberty with 1,141 career points, 14 shy of passing Eric Gordon’s mark of 1,154.
Coincidentally, the leading candidate to fill Ohman’s shoes is Eric’s son Evan Gordon, who was Liberty’s second leading scorer last season with 372 points (12.0
ppg).
Dishing It Out
Point guard Jesse Sanders finished with 152 assists (4.9 apg) last season, ranking 48th in the country in helpers. The floor general also ranked third in the Big
South, behind UNC Asheville’s J.P. Primm (172) and Radford’s Amir Johnson (166).
In his sophomore year, Sanders bested his previous season total of 137, which
stands as the most helpers by a Liberty freshman.
New Season, New Voice
Flames fans listening to the radio will hear a new voice this season. On July 6,
Liberty Athletics hired former ISP broadcaster Alan York as its new radio play-by-play
broadcaster for its football and men’s basketball programs.
York will be replacing Liberty’s legendary play-by-play broadcaster Jerry Edwards, who held the position of “Voice of the Flames” for 29 years before retiring
from broadcasting last spring. York will be the fifth person to hold down the position
as the Flames’ play-by-play broadcaster for men’s basketball.
For the past 12 years, York has been an assistant production manager for ISP,
America’s Home for College Sports on the radio for the last two decades.
While at ISP, York was based out of Winston-Salem, N.C., and was the lead
broadcaster for the ACC National Game of the Week in football. He has also gained
experience broadcasting various Wake Forest’s men’s and women’s basketball and
baseball programs.
Solid at the Line
Liberty finished the 2009-10 season with a productive year at the foul line, shooting 70.0 percent (468 of 669) from the charity stripe. The Flames finished the season
as the Big South’s leader in free throw percentage.
Home Court Advantage?
The Flames are looking to improve its record at home this season, after finishing
8-6 (.571) inside the Vines Center last season. The winning percentage was the lowest since the 2005-2006 season, when the Flames went 6-7 (.462) at home. Liberty’s
lowest winning percentage inside the Vines Center occurred during the 1990-91
season, when the Flames went 3-8 (.375) during home games. The following season, Liberty turned things around, finishing the season 14-1 at home and claiming
the best winning percentage in the Vines Center (.933).
