◦Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS), Hierarchical VPLS (H-VPLS), Virtual Private Wire Service
(VPWS), Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS), pseudo wire redundancy, and multi segment pseudo
wire stitching.
• BGP Prefix Independent Convergence—This provides the ability to converge BGP routes within
sub seconds instead of multiple seconds. The Forwarding Information Base (FIB) is updated, independent
of a prefix, to converge multiple 100K BGP routes with the occurrence of a single failure. This
convergence is applicable to both core and edge failures and with or without MPLS. This fast
convergence innovation is unique to Cisco IOS XR Software.
• Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)—This supports MPLS protocols, including Traffic Engineering
(TE) [including TE-FRR and TE Preferred Path], Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP), Label
Distribution Protocol (LDP), Targeted LDP (T-LDP), Differentiated Services (DiffServ)-aware traffic
engineering, and Layer 3 Virtual Private Network (L3VPN).
• Multicast—This provides comprehensive IP Multicast software including Source Specific Multicast
(SSM) and Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) in Sparse Mode only. The Cisco ASR 9000 Series
Aggregation Services Router also supports Auto-Rendezvous Point (AutoRP), Multiprotocol BGP
(MBGP), Multicast Source Discovery Protocol (MSDP), Internet Group Management Protocol Versions
2 and 3 (IGMPv2 and v3), IGMPv2 and v3 snooping, Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) versions
1 and 2, and MLD snooping versions 1 and 2.
• Quality of Service (QOS)—This supports QoS mechanisms including policing, marking, queuing,
random and hard traffic dropping, and shaping. Additionally, Cisco IOS XR supports modular QoS
command-line interface (MQC). MQC is used to configure various QoS features on various Cisco
platforms, including the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router. Supports the following:
◦Class-Based Weighted Fair Queuing (CBWFQ)
◦Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED)
◦Priority Queuing with propagation
◦2-rate 3-color (2R3C) Policing
◦Modular QoS CLI (MQC)
◦4-level Hierarchical-QoS
◦Shared Policy Instances
• Manageability—This provides industry-standard management interfaces including modular
command-line interface (CLI), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and native Extensible
Markup Language (XML) interfaces. Includes a comprehensive set of Syslog messages.
• Security—This provides comprehensive network security features including Layer 2 and Layer 3
access control lists (ACLs); routing authentications; Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting
(AAA)/Terminal Access Controller Access Control System (TACACS+), Secure Shell (SSH),
Management Plane Protection (MPP) for management plane security, and Simple Network Management
Protocol version3 (SNMPv3). Control plane protections integrated into line card Application-Specific
Integrated Circuits (ASICs) include Generalized TTL Security Mechanism (GTSM), RFC 3682, and
Dynamic Control Plane Protection (DCPP).
• Availability—This supports rich availability features such as fault containment, fault tolerance, fast
switchover, link aggregation, nonstop routing for ISIS, LDP, OSPF, and nonstop forwarding (NSF).
• Enhanced core competencies:

Note that error messages may display if features run without the appropriate licenses installed. For example,
when creating or configuring VRF, if the A9K-IVRF-LIC license is not installed before creating a VRF, the
following message displays:

Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregration Services Router Right-To-Use (RTU) Licensing
For Cisco license support, please contact your Cisco Sales Representative or Customer Service at 800553-NETS (6387) or 408-526-4000. For questions on the program other than ordering, please send e-mail to:
[email protected].
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregration Services Router Right-To-Use (RTU) Licensing
Here are on-line locations of the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Right-To-Use (RTU)
licensing documents:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/asr9000/hardware/Prodlicense/A9k-AIP-LIC-B.html
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/asr9000/hardware/Prodlicense/A9k-AIP-LIC-E.html
Note
Layer 3 VPNs are only to be used after you have purchased a license. Cisco will enforce the RTU of
L3VPNs in follow on releases. You should contact Cisco, or check the release notes for the follow on
release before upgrading for directions on how to install the license as part of the upgrade - otherwise the
L3VPN feature may be affected.
The activation of VRF capability still requires the use of the appropriate per line card license (A9K-IVRF-LIC
/ A9K-AIP-LIC-B / A9K-AIP-LIC-E). Please contact your sales representative for more details.
Firmware Support
To check the firmware code running on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router, run the show fpd package
command in admin mode.
If upgrading from Release 3.7.3 or earlier releases, you may be expected to do a one-time FPD upgrade for
any firmware images that may have changed since the last release. Refer to the documents at http://
www.cisco.com/web/Cisco_IOS_XR_Software/index.html for upgrade instructions.

Software Features Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 5.2.0 for Cisco ASR 9000 Series
Aggregation Service Router
BGP Flow Specification
The BGP flow specification (flowspec) feature allows you to rapidly deploy and propagate filtering and
policing functionality among a large number of BGP peer routers to mitigate the effects of a distributed
denial-of-service (DDoS) attack over your network.
For more information on BGP Flowspec, see the Implementing BGP Flowspec chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000
Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Configuration Guide. For more information on BGP Flowspec

Match Aggregated Route
The Match Aggregated Route feature helps to match BGP aggregated route from the non-aggregated route.
BGP can aggregate a group of routes into a single prefix before sending updates to a neighbor. With Match
Aggregated Route feature, route policy separates this aggregated route from other routes.
For more information on Match Aggregated Route, see the Implementing Routing Policy chapter in the
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Configuration Guide. For more information on
Match Aggregated Route commands, see the Routing Policy Language Commands chapter in the
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Command Reference.
Remove Private AS in Inbound Policy
BGP appends its own as-path before sending out packets to neighbors. When a packet traverses multiple iBGP
neighbors, the as-path structure will have many private autonomous systems (AS) in them. The Remove
Private AS in Inbound Policy will give the capability to delete those private autonomous systems using RPL
route-policy. The remove as-path private-as command removes autonomous systems (AS) with AS number
64512 through 65535.
For more information on Remove Private AS in Inbound Policy, see the Implementing Routing Policy chapter
in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Configuration Guide. For more information
on Remove Private AS in Inbound Policy commands, see the Routing Policy Language Commands chapter
in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Command Reference.
Set Administrative Distance
The Set Administrative Distance modifies the administrative distance of each of the individual prefixes in
BGP. When RIB has two routes to the same destination, RIB chooses the route with lower administrative
distance for forwarding. The set-administrative-distance command sets the administrative distance of BGP
route to a value such that RIB chooses the route which is required.
For more information on Set Administrative Distance, see the Implementing Routing Policy chapter in the
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Configuration Guide. For more information on
Set Administrative Distance commands, see the Routing Policy Language Commands chapter in the
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Command Reference.
BFD over Bundle Per-Member Link
BFD over Bundle (BoB) Per-Member Link Mode is a standard-based fast failure detection of link aggregation
(LAG) member links that is interoperable between different platforms. This provides an option to choose the
per-member link mode to use either Cisco or IETF standard. This feature is supported only on Cisco ASR
9000 Enhanced Ethernet Line Card.
Note
The global command for configuring BoB over bundle is available only up to release 5.3.0. For releases
starting 5.3.1, you have the option to configure BFD over Bundles CISCO/IETF Mode support on a per
bundle basis.
For more information on BFD over Bundle Per-Member Link, see the Implementing BFD chapter in the
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Configuration Guide. For more information on

Nondestructive Editing of Routing Policy
The Nondestructive Editing of Routing Policy changes the default exit behavior under routing policy
configuration mode to abort the configuration.
For more information on Non-Destructive Editing, see the Implementing Routing Policy chapter in the
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Configuration Guide. For more information on
Non-Destructive Editing commands, see the Routing Policy Language Commands chapter in the
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Command Reference.

This section explains the concept of segment routing and the relevant procedures to configure and verify the
various features.
MVPN with BGP SAFI-2 and SAFI-129
BGP supports Subsequent Address Family Identifier (SAFI)-2 and SAFI-129 for multicast VPNs (MVPNs).
For more information on MVPN with BGP SAFI-2 and SAFI-129, see the Implementing BGP chapter in the
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Configuration Guide. For more information on
MVPN with BGP SAFI-2 and SAFI-129 commands, see the Border Gateway Protocol Commands chapter
in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Routing Command Reference.
Outer VLAN Range
The Outer VLAN range is a BNG-specific feature that provides a more advanced VLAN encapsulation option
of double-tagged VLANs, where the outer VLAN is specified as a range and the inner VLAN is specified as
any.
For more information about the Outer-VLAN range feature, see the Configuring Subscriber Features chapter
in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Broadband Network Gateway Configuration
Guide. For complete command reference of the Outer-VLAN range specific commands, see the BNG Interfaces

service provisioning. The label allocation mode used for this feature is per-prefix. The feature is supported
for IPv4 and IPv6.
For more information about the eBGP over PPPoE feature, see the Establishing Subscriber Sessions chapter

RADIUS Based Policing - QoS Shaper Parameterization
Radius Based Policing (RaBaPol) allows customized parameters, instead of the default parameters, to be used
to activate BNG subscriber services. BNG supports parameterization of QoS shape-rate. The shaper parameters
can either be sent to BNG by the RADIUS server during connection establishment, as CISCO VSAs in an
Access Accept message, or they can be sent to BNG as part of the CoA messages.
For more information about the RaBaPol - QoS Shaper Parameterization feature, see the Deploying the Quality
of Service (QoS) chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Broadband Network
Gateway Configuration Guide. For complete command reference of this feature specific commands, see the
Control Policy Commands chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Broadband
Network Gateway Command Reference.
User Authentication and Authorization in the Local Network
The user authentication and authorization in the local network feature in BNG provides the option to perform
subscriber authorization locally (in a subscriber's network), instead of both remote authentication and
authorization that occurs in RADIUS servers. With the User Authentication and Authorization in the Local
Network feature, you can run the RADIUS server locally in your network, manage, and configure the RADIUS
server locally in your network to the profile that is required for the environment. In the case of a remote
RADIUS server, the RADIUS server is maintained by an external regulatory body (not within the subscriber's
network) and subscriber will not be able to manage or configure the server.
For more information about the User Authentication and Authorization in the Local Network feature, see the
Configuring Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting Functions chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series
Aggregation Services Router Broadband Network Gateway Configuration Guide.
Multi-Action Change of Authorization
BNG supports multi-action Change of Authorization (CoA) wherein service providers can activate and
deactivate multiple services using a single CoA request. Multi-action CoA is supported for Service-Logon
and Service-Logoff CoA commands. The Service-Logon command can contain one or more Service-Activate
attributes, and optionally Service-Deactivate attributes, for multi-action CoA to specify service(s) to be
activated or deactivated. Similarly, the Service-Logoff command can contain one or more Service-Deactivate
attributes, and optionally Service-Activate attributes, for multi-action CoA to specify service(s) to be
deactivated or activated.
For more information about the Multi-Action Change of Authorization feature, see the Configuring
Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting Functions chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation
Services Router Broadband Network Gateway Configuration Guide. For complete command reference of the
Multi-Action CoA specific commands, see the Control Policy Commands chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000
Series Aggregation Services Router Broadband Network Gateway Command Reference.

BNG over Pseudowire Headend
BNG provides subscriber support over Pseudowire Headend (PWHE). PWHE provides L3 connectivity to
customer edge nodes through a pseudowire connection. PWHE terminates the L2VPN circuits that exists
between the access-provide edge (A-PE) nodes, to a virtual interface, and performs routing on the native IP
packet. Each virtual interface can use one or more physical interfaces towards the access cloud to reach
customer routers through the A-PE nodes. This feature is supported for PPPoE PTA and IPoE subscribers.
For more information about the BNG over Pseudowire Headend (PWHE) feature, see the Establishing
Subscriber Sessions chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Broadband Network
Gateway Configuration Guide.
VXLAN
VXLAN provides the same Ethernet Layer 2 network services as VLAN does today, but with greater
extensibility and flexibility. It is a Layer 2 overlay scheme over a Layer 3 network. It uses MAC
Address-in-User Datagram Protocol (MAC-in-UDP) encapsulation to provide a means to extend Layer 2
segments across the core network.
QPPB on GRE Tunnel Interfaces
QoS Policy Propagation using Border Gateway Protocol (QPPB) helps to classify packets by QoS Group ID,
based on Access control lists (ACLs), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) community lists, BGP autonomous
system (AS) paths, Source Prefix address, or Destination Prefix address. After packet classification, other
QoS features such as policing and weighted random early detection (WRED) can be used to specify and
enforce policies to fit a specific business model. QPPB also allows the user to map BGP prefixes and attributes
to Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) parameters that can be used to enforce traffic policing.
Packets can be classified based on input QPPB policy. This is supported on ASR 9000 Ethernet Line cards
and Enhanced Ethernet Linecards only. The Cisco IOS XR ASR9000 series router supports QPPBv6.
SFP Support on Cluster Ports
The GLC-ZX-SMD, and GLC-EX-SMD SFPs are included in the existing list of SFPs that are allowed for
all EOBC links. For more information on the supported SFPs for EOBC, see the Configuring the nV Edge
System on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services
Router nV Configuration Guide.
Cluster EOBC Support on L2 Channel
This release ensures smooth transmission of Ethernet Out-Of-Band Channel (EOBC ) packets on an L2 network
through a defined topology in the ASR 9000 nV Edge (cluster) System. The EOBC traffic over L2 is limited
to EoMPLS (Ethernet over Multi Protocol Label Switching) PW. The PW cannot be initiated from the cluster
SFP+ ports. In other words, P router has end-to-end PW on it between P routers at the cluster end ports. In
this functionality, all the Inter-Chassis Links (ICLs) connect to the P router ports that are capable of initiating
EoMPLS PW on both sides. There is no configuration required on cluster system.
For more information on configuration of the L2 network in the Cluster setup, see the Configuring the nV
Edge System on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services
Router nV Configuration Guide.

SyncE Support on nV Satellite System
This release supports frequency synchronization in an nV satellite system on Cisco IOS XR ASR 9000
Aggregation Series Routers using Synchronization Ethernet (SyncE), both from host to the satellites, and
from the satellites to downstream devices. This covers details of the out-of-band control protocol used to
manage SyncE sessions on the satellite. This support includes only the "hub-and-spoke" topology, where the
satellites are directly connected to the host, either using several links or a single link bundle. A satellite can
act as a dual-home for two host devices to improve redundancy. Synchronous Ethernet Offload is supported
only for ASR9000v, ASR901, ASR901-S, and ASR903 routers as satellites.
To synchronize the frequency between satellites, the host is connected to an external frequency source and
SyncE is used to synchronize each satellite to the host and each satellite provides frequency to the cell equipment
at the cell site, also through SyncE. For more information on SyncE configuration, see the Configuring the
Satellite Network Virtualization (nV) System chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services
Router nV Configuration Guide.

• LPTS MIB
• Y.1731 Performance Enhancement MIB
Implementing Associated Bidirectional Label Switched Paths
Associated Bidirectional Label Switched Paths are LSP instances where the forward and the reverse direction
paths are setup, monitored and protected independently and associated together during signaling. You use a
RSVP Association object to bind the two forward and reverse LSPs together to form either a co-routed or non
co-routed associated bidirectional TE tunnel.
You can associate a protecting MPLS-TE tunnel with either a working MPLS-TE LSP, protecting MPLS-TE
LSP, or both. The working LSP is the primary LSP backed up by the protecting LSP. When a working LSP
goes down, the protecting LSP is automatically activated. You can configure a MPLS-TE tunnel to operate
without protection as well.
For more information on Associated Bidirectional Co-routed LSPs, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation
Services Router MPLS Configuration Guide, Release 5.2.x. For information on the commands used for
Associated Bidirectional Co-routed LSPs, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router MPLS
Command Reference, Release 5.2.x.
CGN on VSM: Additional NetFlow/Syslog server for CGN Logging
If a NetFlow server fails for applications like NAT44, then an additional NetFlow/Syslog server for a given
inside-VRF instance is provided for high availability.
For more information on CGN over VSM, see the Secondary NetFlow Server for CGN Logging module in
the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router CGv6 Configuration Guide. For more information
on Secondary NetFlow Server for CGN Logging commands, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation

Static Destination Address NAT
Static Destination Address NAT is supported by VSM from this release onwards. The VSM performs static
address NAT on the destination IPv4 address. This feature supports this form of translation in Inside-to-Outside
direction only.
For more information on Static Destination Address Translation, see the Static Destination Address Translation
module in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router CGv6 Configuration Guide. For more
information on IStatic Destination Address Translation commands, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation

CGN on VSM: NAT0
In cases where the subscribers are assigned public address, the Network Address and Port Translation (NAPT)
is not needed. But the services like End Point Dependent Filtering and TCP sequence check are provided to
the subscribers. Such a mode is known as NAT0 or NAT bypass mode.
For more information on NAT0 mode, see the NAT0 Mode module in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation
Services Router CGv6 Configuration Guide. For more information on NAT0 Mode commands, see the Cisco
ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router CGv6 Command Reference.
OpenFlow
Openflow is an open standard to communicate between controllers, which are running applications and network
elements (such as, routers and switches). The OpenFlow agent runs on RSP and connects to an external
OpenFlow controller and converts OpenFlow messages to corresponding OnePK APIs.
For details regarding OpenFlow, please refer the OpenFlow chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation

Multicast supports Multipoint Label Distribution Protocol Route Policy Map, wherein Multipoint Label
Distribution Protocol uses the route policy maps to filter Label Mappings and selectively apply the configuration
features on Cisco IOS-XR operating system.
Route policy map for configuration commands:
The route policy map for the configuration commands provide you the flexibility to selectively enable some
of the mLDP features such as Make Before Break (MBB), Multicast only FRR (MoFRR) features, and so on,
on the applicable LSPs. Features like Make Before Break (MBB), Multicast only FRR (MoFRR), etc. can be
enabled on mLDP on IOS-XR operating system. When each of these features are enabled, they are enabled
for all of the mLDP Labeled-Switched Paths (LSPs) irrespective of whether they are applicable for the particular
LSP or not. For example, MoFRR is used for IPTV over mLDP in-band signaled P2MP LSPs, but not for the

generic MVPN using a MP2MP LSPs. Using the route policy map, you can configure mLDP to to selectively
enable some of the features.
Route policy for label mapping filtering:
The route policy map for the Label Mapping filtering provides a way to prevent the mLDP from crossing over
from one plane to another in the event of a failure.
For more information about MLDP Route Policy Map used to filter Label Mappings, see Cisco ASR 9000
Series Aggregation Services Router Multicast Configuration Guide..
NetFlow V9: VRF Table Export
From this release, the NetFlow process will also export the VRF table along with the interface and the sampler
tables. Also, two extra fields have been added to the data record:
• ingressVRFID
• egressVRFID
For more information about the VRF Table Export feature, see the Configuring NetFlow module in the

Information About Smart Licensing
Smart Licensing is a cloud-based, software license management solution that enables you to automate
time-consuming, manual licensing tasks. The solution allows you to easily track the status of your license and
software usage trends.
Smart Licensing helps simplify three core functions:
• Purchasing: The software that you have installed in your network can automatically self-register
themselves, without Product Activation Keys (PAKs).
• Management: You can automatically track activations against your license entitlements. Additionally,
there is no need to install the license file on every node. You can create license pools (logical grouping
of licenses) to reflect your organization structure. Smart Licensing offers you Cisco Smart Software
Manager, a centralized portal that enables you to manage all your Cisco software licenses from one
centralized website.
• Reporting: Through the portal, Smart Licensing offers an integrated view of the licenses you have
purchased and what has been actually deployed in your network. You can use this data to make better
purchase decisions, based on your consumption.
For more information on Smart Licensing, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router System
Management Configuration Guide, Release 5.2.x. For information on the commands used for configuring
Smart Licensing, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router System Management Command
Reference, Release 5.2.x.
Certificate Authority Trust Pool Management
The trust pool feature is used to authenticate sessions, such as HTTPS, that occur between devices by using
commonly recognized trusted agents called certificate authorities (CAs). This feature is enabled by default in

the software to create a scheme to provision, store, and manage a pool of certificates from known CAs in a
way similar to the services a browser provides for securing sessions. A special trusted point called a trust pool
is designated, containing multiple known CA certificates from Cisco and possibly from other vendors. The
trust pool consists of both built-in and downloaded CA certificates.
For more information on Certificate Authority Trustpool Management, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series
Aggregation Services Router System Security Configuration Guide, Release 5.2.x. For information on the
commands used for configuring the Trustpool, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router
System Security Command Reference, Release 5.2.x.
Information about Cisco TrustSec L2 and L3 Security Group Tag Propagation
The Cisco TrustSec (CTS) solution allows you to intelligently control access to corporate data, allowing access
control policies to be applied uniformly anywhere in the network. It allows you to group users and their devices
so that rules and policies can be defined at a group level. With CTS enabled, when a user’s traffic enters the
network, it is classified according to characteristics such as user authentication, analysis of the device being
used and it’s network location. Based on these criteria, a user’s endpoint is classified as a member of a particular
security group (SG); for example, it could be added to a group called Retail-Manager.
The security group information is embedded as a 16-bit Security Group Tag (SGT) value in each frame
associated with the user device.
Carrier for CTS propagation:The CTS tags can be carried across the network in packets at various levels
of the network stack. The possible scenarios for ASR9K include:
• L2 CTS: In this case SGT propagation happens in a CTS-aware cloud. Here, CTS encapsulation is done
at L2 between the Ethernet and IP header.
• L3 CTS: In this case SGT propagation happens across a non-CTS cloud. Here, the CTS encapsulation
is done at L3 after the IP header.
L2 and L3 CTS-SGT propagation allows the interfaces in a router to be manually enabled for CTS, so that
the router can propagate the CTS packet to be carried throughout the network.
Note
CTS is supported only on ASR 9000 Enhanced Ethernet Line Cards.
For more information on Cisco TrustSec, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router System
Security Configuration Guide, Release 5.2.x. For information on the commands used for configuring Cisco
TrustSec, see the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router System Security Command Reference,
Release 5.2.x.
DHCPv4 Client
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) client functionality enables the router interfaces to
dynamically acquire the IPv4 address using DHCP.
The DHCP provides configuration parameters to Internet hosts. DHCP consists of two components:
• a protocol to deliver host-specific configuration parameters from a DHCP server to a host.
• a mechanism to allocate network addresses to hosts.
DHCP is built on a client-server model, where designated DHCP server hosts allocate network addresses, and
deliver configuration parameters to dynamically configured hosts.

Router
A relay agent is required if the client and server are not on the same Layer 2 network. The relay agent usually
runs on the router, and is required because the client device does not know its own IP address initially. The
agent sends out a Layer 2 broadcast to find a server that has this information. The router relays these broadcasts
to the DHCP server, and forwards the responses back to the correct Layer 2 address so that the correct device
gets the correct configuration information.
DHCP has the ability to allocate IP addresses only for a configurable period of time, called the lease period.
If the client is required to retain this IP address for a longer period beyond the lease period, the lease period
must be renewed before the IP address expires. The client renews the lease based on configuration that was
sent from the server. The client unicasts a REQUEST message using the IP address of the server. When a
server receives the REQUEST message and responds with an ACK message. The lease period of the client
is extended by the lease time configured in the ACK message.
Restrictions and Limitations
• DHCP client can be enabled only on management interfaces.
• Either DHCP or static IP can be configured on an interface.
QoS on IPv4 GRE tunnels
QoS support on IPv4 GRE tunnels enables applying the policy map directly on the IPv4 GRE interface. This
enables aggregate policing and marking on the tunnel. The policy can be applied on the ingress side of the
tunnel to mark and police payload traffic going into the tunnel. QoS is not supported on traffic egressing out
of the tunnel.
For information on GRE tunnels, see the chapter Implementing Generic Routing Encapsulation in theCisco
ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router MPLS Layer 3 VPN Configuration Guide.
GRE tunnel in VRF domains
You can configure an IPv4 GRE tunnel between two interfaces that belong to a Virtual Forwarding and
Routing (VRF) instance. This contains or limits the tunnel path within this specific VRF instance. For example,
packets can be sent internally within a default or non-default VRF instance separated through an intermediate
VRF that contains the GRE tunnel.
Software Feature Enhancements
These software feature enhancements are introduced in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 5.2.0.
• The next-hop-unchanged multipath command disables overwriting of next-hop calculation for
multipath prefixes.
• The bgp multipath as-path ignore onwards command ignores as-path onwards while computing
multipath.
• The minimum ROMMON version required for ASR9001 in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 5.2.0 is
2.04.
Refer Software/Firmware Compatibility Matrix information at http://www.cisco.com/web/

Caveats
• For configured policer rates of less than 1 Mbps, the actual policer rate can be approximately 10 percent
less than the configured rate. For example, for a configured policer rate of 500 kbps, the actual policer
rate is 448 kbps due to a granularity round down in hardware.
• In Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Software Release 4.0.0, the minimum configurable
logging buffered size has been increased to 307200. Any configuration with a value less than 307200
fails to upgrade to Release 4.0.1.
◦Run the show configuration failed startup command on startup to display the failed configuration.
◦Workaround: Prior to upgrading to Release 4.0.1, set the logging buffer size to a value of 307200
or greater (logging buffered 307200) .
• dsu mode Command Default— For E3 interfaces on the 4-Port Clear Channel T3/E3 SPA that
interoperate with E3 interfaces on a Cisco 10000 Series router, the default data service unit (DSU) mode
is digital-link. To change the DSU mode to cisco, configure scrambling.
• In Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Software Release 4.1.0, you use the cablelength
short command to set a cable length of 655 feet or shorter for a DS1 link on a 4-Port Channelized T1/E1
SPA. The cablelength short command options are listed as follows:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:(config-t1)#cablelength short ?
133ft
0-133ft
266ft
134-266ft
399ft
267-399ft
533ft
400-533ft
655ft
534-655ft
However, when using the cablelength short command on a 4-Port Channelized T1/E1 SPA in Cisco
ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Software Release 4.1.0, only the 133ft option (for cable
lengths from 0 to 133 feet) works. The other values that are greater than 133 feet (266, 399, 533, or 655)
all cause the T1 controller to go down. The workaround is to restart the controller after you set the cable
length to 266, 399, 533, or 655 feet. The cablelength long command works correctly

Basic Description:
BFD w/ fast keep alive flaps on sat access when ICL member added/removed
Symptom
Traffic Impact of 2-6 Sec on SAT Access, Bundle ICL - Mem Added/removed
Conditions:
• Satellite access ports with ICL bundle mode
• BFD running on satellite access ports at fast keep alive (eg 100ms x 3 timeout)
• ICL bundle membership is changed (member is added or removed)
Note that traffic impact of 2-6 seconds is because BFD flaps and then causes subsequent higher layer
traffic convergence. Without BFD being used, the actual traffic impact during a ICL bundle membership
addition/ deletion is still sub-second. Further more, if instead of bundle membership configuration
change, its just a regular ICL bundle failover then the traffic impact is well below sub-second (typically
<200ms altough may depend on type of satellite being used).
Workaround:
1 Use slower BFD keep alive interval (for example 300ms x 3) when using BFD over satellite access
ports with ICL bundles. Basically the BFD rate should be such that BFD times out slower than the
layer 1/ bundle re-convergence time.
2 Do not change bundle membership configuration during live operation. This is the type of operation
which is ideally performed during a maintenance window for a high availability service. Note that
this applies only to bundle membership configuration change. A regular bundle failover (due to link
fail) operates much faster and hence will not trigger BFD flaps even if BFD is set to 100ms x 3. So

if customer really desires fast BFD timeout (such as 100ms x 3) over a satellite access port with ICL
bundles, that can still be supported as long as the bundle membership configuration is not changed
during live operation.

Symptom
CGN service traffic gets dropped in VSM NP with counter "MDF_DROP_EGR_PORT_NO_MATCH".
Conditions:
If ingress LC interface MTU is smaller than VSM physical interface MTU then packets gets fragmented
on VSM NP. These fragmented packets are dropped in VSM NP and not forwarded to CGv6 APP.
Workaround:
VSM physical interface MTU should be set to ingress LC interface MTU + 4. This will avoid
fragmentation on VSM.

Basic Description:
bfd central-services BFD NSR data not synchronized; NSR not ready.
Symptom
After RP Failover (RPFO), the non-stop routing (NSR) related data for BFD central-services remain not
synchronised. The output for "show redundancy" CLI command, gives the details of the standby-RP
state in this condition. BFD sessions in line cards (LCs) and BFD clients are NOT affected. There is no
known effect on the network's convergence. When the system enters this condition, the subsequent
RPFO cannot be triggered and that is the main symptom of this problem.

Caveats
The condition happens only after RPFO, triggered by random system IPC disconnects. The system does
NOT enter into this state on every RPFO, but only for some fail overs.
Workaround:
Use the process restart bfd command to restart the BFD server process at RP to force the system to come
out of this condition. Since the BFD server process is the only process to be restarted, the BFD clients
and ongoing BFD sessions in the line cards are NOT affected.

Symptom
ASR9001 Cluster EOBC ports (ICL) getting error disabled and not able to recover.
Conditions:
This defect is seen when Primary and Backup racks are separated over an L2 Cloud where the ICLs and
IRLs are connected across an xconnect. Trigger is seen as L2VPN going down and up due to a core link
failure in L2 cloud. The issue is also seen during a software upgrade of cluster in this scenario.

Upgrading Cisco IOS XR Software
Cisco IOS XR Software is installed and activated from modular packages, allowing specific features or
software patches to be installed, upgraded, or downgraded without affecting unrelated processes. Software
packages can be upgraded or downgraded on all supported card types, or on a single card (node).
Software packages are installed from package installation envelope (PIE) files that contain one or more
software components.

Resolving Upgrade File Issues
Note
In some very rare cases inconsistencies in the content of the internal configuration files can appear. In
such situations, to avoid configuration loss during upgrade, the following steps can be optionally done
before activating packages:
1 Clear the NVGEN cache:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# run nvgen -F 1
2 Create a dummy config commit:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# config
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router(config)# hostname <hostname>
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:rotuer(config)# commit
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router(config)# end
3 Force a commit update by using the reload command. Press n when the confirmation prompt appears:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# reload
Updating Commit Database. Please wait...[OK]
Proceed with reload? [confirm]
4 Press n
In some cases other activity may preclude a reload. The following message may display:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# reload
Preparing system for backup. This may take a few minutes ............System
configuration backup in progress [Retry later]
If you receive this message wait and then retry the command after some time.
