Just as he and his program become the focus of the First Lady of the United States' outreach efforts, his student Satori accuses him of sexual abuse. vi FULL CIRCLE FADE IN EXT. GRAND BLANC, MI - SUBURB - PRESENT DAY Lush green grass are like plush carpet in front of beautiful, large, brick homes. Big houses with columns that accent the front doors are on every corner. Evergreen and Oak trees block the sky’s view, while beds of colorful flowers fill in the remaining empty spaces. Fancy cars are parked in driveways and help decorate this upper middle-class neighborhood in of Flint, Michigan EXT. FLINT, MI - INNER CITY - DAY Deeper into the city of Flint, the view quickly changes. Boarded and empty houses, full of graffiti align these streets. Burn residue on roofs and beat-up cars are parked on the streets. Matte grass and leaves, that need to be raked, decorate the yards. Windows taped with duct tape offer an inside view to an abandon house. This is definitely the other side of town. EXT. BROWNELL K-2 STEM ACADEMY - DAY A broken, paint-chipped jungle gym sits in the middle of the school yard. The parking lot is full of Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Pontiac vehicles, from 1979 to present models. 1 A sign that reads, BROWNELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, stands haggard in the burnt out lawn of the school’s entrance. INT. BROWNELL K-2 STEM ACADEMY LIBRARY - DAY BRADLEY JENNINGS, an ambitious, thirty-four year old African-American teacher, wears his best and only suit as he speaks to a group of about sixty people. He points to the Power Point presentation slide, on the screen. Super: The Global Citizen Project BRADLEY I’m so grateful to each of you for completing The Global Citizen Project. APPLAUSE from the group. Bradley clicks to the next slide. A split screen displays a Black Family and A Hispanic Family. Super: Together, We spend 2.2 Trillion dollars annually. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Between the Black and Hispanic communities, in 2013, we totaled 95 million people in America and spent 2.2 Trillion dollars. 2 Bradley clicks to the next slide that contains a picture of Black and Hispanic people standing in a circle holding hands. Super: Join together to demand that companies re-invest into our communities. BRADLEY (CONT’D) We can change the world with that kind of buying power. But in order to do that, we must learn a very basic skill. Reading and writing and the net. We still have 32 million Americans who can’t read according to the US Dept. of Education. Bradley clicks to the next slide. A picture of a split screen of Black and Hispanic men behind bars. BRADLEY (V.O.) 85 percent of all juveniles are functionally illiterate, and over 70 percent of inmates in America's prisons cannot read above a fourth grade level. The same image as the previous slide but with a Red X drawn through each image and replaced by the same men, in a library, with books in their hands. Students sit next to them, teaching them to read, with smiles on their faces. 3 Bradley’s soon-to-be ex-wife, and fellow co-worker, LISA JENNINGS enters the room and stands in the back. Bradley notices. BRADLEY So if we can eliminate illiteracy, we can reduce crime and truly start using our buying power in a much more effective way. APPLAUSE from the group. BRADLEY (CONT’D) At this time, I want to acknowledge the strength of this program, my high school trainers. Please come forward. Paul... The STUDENTS come to the podium. Bradley steps aside and gives the podium to his student, PAUL FORD, an African-American sixteen-year old, who’d rather read the Wall Street Journal than watch television. APPLAUSE. Bradley joins Lisa in the back of the room. PAUL Thank you. My name is Paul Ford and I am a junior at Central High School. 4 We would like to present certificates of literacy to our participants. Please come forward when your name is called. LISA Nice speech. BRADLEY Thanks. LISA Too bad you don’t include the rate it takes to accomplish this goal and how much people in your life are expected to sacrifice. BRADLEY Whatever you need must be important if you came to interrupt our presentation. LISA Well, I just needed you to know that I think it’s bullshit for you to try and stop me from selling the house. I’m the one who paid the taxes for the past three years while you’ve been busy with this. 5 BRADLEY That house was given to me by my grandmother. Besides, we need to finalize custody. LISA Fine. But you should know I’m moving in with Greg at the end of the week. She hands him the papers. He puts them inside his suit jacket. LISA (CONT’D) See if it works for you. Also, tell my daughter I said hello. I’ve gotta get to the school board meeting. Bradley recovers in time to applaud his students. EXT. GRAVESITE - DAY SATORI TURNER, a beautiful young lady reminiscent of Lisa Bonet, from the Cosby Show years, stands above a gravesite. RENEE FENDA TURNER, WIFE and MOTHER is written on the headstone. Satori squats and rests her head on her arms. After a few moments, she rises, and suddenly stomps all over the headstone screaming in anger. SATORI I hate you! I hate you! You ruined my life! You’re so fucking selfish!! 6 A GRAVEDIGGER looks up at her. Stunned from her own actions, Satori runs off. INT. BROWNELL K-2 STEM ACADEMY - DAY Bradley peeks into the door of his eight year-old daughter, EMIKO’s, third grade class room. BELL RINGS. Bradley hides behind the door. Emiko and her friends, LATINA and ILLYA run out of the classroom. Bradley sneaks up behind them. EMIKO Daddy!! They all jump on Bradley. ILLYA Mr. J!!! Emiko’s teacher, MR. BELLVIEW, an older Caucasian, warm-faced man greets Bradley. BRADLEY Can you help me Mr. Bellview? MR. BELLVIEW I’m afraid you’re on your own. 7 INT. BROWNELL K-2 STEM ACADEMY, HALLWAY - DAY Bradley walks the girls down the hallway. BRADLEY Park date? EMIKO Yes!! Can Illya come? BRADLEY As long as her Mommy and Daddy say yes. ILLYA Can you call my Daddy, please? EXT. PARK - DAY The park is nearly empty. The playground has a set of rings, monkey bars, and a slide. There are a few babies and their parents in the sandbox. Bradley pushes Emiko and Illya on the swings. EMIKO Let’s race! Bradley pulls them back slowly, one in each hand. 8 BRADLEY Remember, hold on tight, bend your legs back as far as you can, and on your way up, stretch out as far as you can. Bradley pulls both girls back at equal distance. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Ready, set, go! Bradley lets them go and steps back. The girls race each other on the swings. ILLYA Whoa! I’m getting higher!! BRADLEY 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. Emiko jumps off the swing into the sand. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Emiko! Emiko rolls around in the ground, laughing. ILLYA Wow, how’d you learn to do that. 9 BRADLEY Alright Gabby Douglas! They celebrate. Illya’s Dad, BO, walks up. ILLYA Daddy!! Did you see Emiko jump off the swing? BO I did! The girls run off to the slide. Bradley pulls out a cigarette. BRADLEY Do you mind? Bo shakes his head, “no.” BO I just quit a year ago. BRADLEY I just started a week ago. BO Get outta here. 10 BRADLEY I haven’t smoked in twelve years. BO Why now? BRADLEY I’ll stop when the papers are signed. BO I hear you man. So Lisa’s dragging it out? BRADLEY She’s making it hard for me. Trying to take money I don’t have. BO Take it from me man. Peace of mind over dollars and cents. Bradley tosses his cigarette on the ground and stomps it out. BO (CONT’D) Illya! Illya, we gotta go babygirl. Emiko and Illya run to Bradley and Bo. 11 BO (CONT’D) Keep your head up man. I appreciate what you doing. Changing lives for real, when most people just talk about it. BRADLEY Thanks, man. The girls wave goodbye. Bradley puts Emiko on his back. EMIKO For old times sake Daddy! Bradley laughs. BRADLEY Listen to you! For old times sake. You hungry? EMIKO If I can have pizza and ice cream, I’m hungry! BRADLEY Pizza it is. We’ll see about the ice cream later. Bradley and Emiko walk through the park. 12 EXT. BROWNELL K-2 STEM ACADEMY - NEXT DAY Bradley parks his car in front of Emiko’s school. He walks around to the passenger door and opens it. BRADLEY Alright baby, have a good day at school. EMIKO Ok Daddy, are you picking me up or is Mommy? BRADLEY Mommy’s picking you up today. EMIKO Ok. Bradley kisses her on the cheek. Emiko throws up the two finger peace sign. Bradley laughs. BRADLEY Peace baby. Emiko runs toward the school’s entrance. Bradley watches until she enters the school. CUT TO: 13 EXT. EAST VILLAGE, FLINT - MORNING The Planetarium, Flint Institute of the Arts, and the Flint Public Library are surrounded by maple trees full of red, brown, and orange leaves, on Kearsley Street. A bright blue, 1965 Chevy Impala drives down the street. INT. CHEVY IMPALA - MORNING Bradley grips the steering wheel, taps his thumbs to the SOUNDS of hip hop. B-MAC, a deejay on 92.7 FM, WDZZ Flint, chimes in. B-MAC (V.O.) Yes, yes y’all, had to drop this most official, hiphop, throwback classic, Award Tour, from A Tribe Called Quest. Bradley bops his head and SINGS along. BRADLEY (SINGS) WE ON AWARD TOUR WIT MUHAMMAD MY MAN, GOING EACH AND EVERY PLACE WITH A MIC IN MY HAND, NEW YORK, NJ, N.C., FLINTTOWN!! 14 EXT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT-MORNING Central High School, once a beautiful, brick building needs a complete overhaul. Trash is scattered along the school’s worn lawn. The American Flag swings lazily on the flagpole. Bradley pulls into a parking spot in between two empty spots. Two pretty teenage girls, TRISCHE’ and KATRINA walk along the sidewalk toward the school’s entrance. Bradley walks with the girls up the stairs. TRISCHE’ AND KATRINA Hi Mr. Jennings!!! BRADLEY Hi ladies. How is your morning? TRISCHE’ AND KATRINA Fine. One of the girls whispers under her breath. KATRINA Like you. BRADLEY Have a good day ladies! 15 Principal DORI TOLEN, an attractive, well-dressed, no-nonsense Asian woman, watches the ladies and Bradley, on the stairs. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Good morning Principal Tolen. DORI Good morning. Bell RINGS INT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY-MORNING Bradley strolls down the hall and his students Paul and EDGAR, a Latino jokester camouflaged as a tough seventeen-year-old boy, run up to him. EDGAR What up Mr. J! PAUL Mr. J, sir! BRADLEY Gentleman. They reach the classroom. 16 INT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM-MORNING Bradley enters alone and flicks on the lights of the brightly decorated room. He sits at his desk and lights a candle, and turns the radio to KJAZZ 88.1 FM. Puts his feet on the desk and leans back, and reads from the book Jesus Calling. INT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY-MORNING KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK Bradley turns to the door and Satori stares through the small window. Bradley opens the door. BRADLEY Hi Satori, did the bell ring? SATORI No. I just want to help out. Bradley allows Satori into his room. He hands her the paper in his hand. BRADLEY Copy the agenda on the board, please. Bradley reaches for the broom in the corner and sweeps. He places a doorstop in the door to prop it slightly open. 17 BRADLEY (CONT’D) What’s on your mind Satori? SATORI I don’t know what you mean, Mr. Jennings. BRADLEY I find it very hard to believe that a pretty, smart, young lady, such as yourself, would rather help me prepare the room than walk around with her friends before school starts. Satori blushes. SATORI You know me so well, Mr. J. BRADLEY I’ve just been teaching a long time. Wanna talk about it? Satori stops writing and places a cap on the marker. SATORI I’ve been trying to give people a chance, like you told me, but it’s not working. They judge me. 18 BRADLEY Remember, you are talking about teenagers, Satori. That’s what you all do at this age. SATORI I already know people don’t know what they will do until they’re in that situation, so I don’t judge. BRADLEY Sometimes in life, your thinking is beyond your years and your peers, so have to wait for them to catch up. Have you been going to counseling, on a regular basis? SATORI Yes, and no. I went to see my Mom this morning. Bradley stops sweeping. He puts his hand on her shoulder. Bell RINGS BRADLEY We’ll finish this conversation later. Satori returns to writing on the board. Bradley walks over to the door to open it completely. 19 INT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL - CLASSROOM HALLWAY-MORNING Bradley faces the students lined against the wall in two lines; one for the girls, and one for the guys. Edgar is the first student in line. Bradley leans over and speaks in a hushed tone. BRADLEY Edgar, why don’t you walk Satori to her class? Bradley gives Edgar a hall pass. EDGAR Mr. J, you funny. You know she don’t like me. BRADLEY Practice your game. Edgar hangs by the door. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Thank you, Edgar. Bradley waves his hand to the girls. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Ladies. The last girl walks into the room. 20 BRADLEY (CONT’D) Gents. The boys enter, while Satori walks out. SATORI Thanks for the talk Mr. J. BRADLEY You’re welcome. Edgar holds his hand out to guide Satori. She rolls her eyes. A beautiful female teacher, with glasses, JOHNNA HARLOW, has been watching Bradley and his class from across the hall. Bradley notices. JOHNNA Mr. Jennings. A student crushing on you? BRADLEY I don’t know about that. But hopefully, a teacher is Ms. Harlow. Johnna blushes. BRADLEY (CONT’D) How is your morning going? 21 JOHNNA Zero down, six classes to go. And for you? BRADLEY Today is a good day. JOHNNA Alright, O’Shea. She walks into her classroom. Bradley watches Johnna. His last student, Paul enters the classroom. PAUL Dang, Mr. J, you are starin’.... INT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY - LATER THAT DAY Principal Dori patrols the halls. DORI Get to class people! Let’s go! JOHN COLEMAN, a history teacher, joins Dori. The hall is nearly empty. JOHN COLEMAN You heard the lady, let’s go! 22 John enters the boys bathroom. Dori walks in the girls’ bathroom. Dori gets a whiff of marijuana smoke. INT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ BATHROOM - DAY Dori opens the first door. Nothing. She opens the second door. Nothing. She opens the third door. Locked. Satori sits on a stool smoking a joint. INSIDE THE STALL SATORI No vacancy. DORI Oh really? INSIDE THE STALL Satori quickly FLUSHES the marijuana down the toilet. She straightens her clothes and sticks a piece of gum in her mouth. She slowly opens the door. SATORI Sorry, I had to do the number two. DORI Really? 23 Satori walks to the sink to wash her hands. DORI (CONT’D) Look up. Satori picks her head up in the mirror. Dori stands behind her. DORI (CONT’D) Your eyes are bloodshot. SATORI My stomach was hurting. DORI Let’s go. My office. INT. PRICIPAL TOLEN’S OFFICE LOBBY - DAY Dori and Satori walk into the office. DORI Sit down. Satori sits. The motherly secretary, MRS. SUPPOL, an east Indian woman who takes no mess stares at Satori. 24 DORI (CONT’D) Mrs. Suppol, keep an eye on her, please. MRS. SUPPOL Not a problem at all. She’ll be fine right here. Satori avoids Mrs. Suppol’s eyes. INT. PRINCIPAL TOLEN’S OFFICE - DAY Dori on the phone at her desk. DORI She’s in my lobby, waiting. INT. CORPORATE OFFICE - DAY A well dressed African-American, businessman, JACKSON TURNER, leans back in his chair on the speakerphone as he tosses and squeezes a stress ball. JACKSON What now? INTERCUT - PHONE CONVERSATION 25 DORI I just caught her in the girls’ bathroom smoking marijuana. JACKSON Did you see her smoking? DORI She was the only one in the bathroom and would not open the stall until she heard my voice. JACKSON After work today, make sure she comes home with you. DORI Baby, do you want to speak to her now? JACKSON Not now. I need to see her face. She needs to see mine. DORI Ok. 26 JACKSON Call me if something else happens before you make it home. INT. PRINCIPAL TOLEN’S OFFICE - DAY HERMAN KNOWLER, a Caucasian, neatly dressed, friendly guy, enters Dori’s office. HERMAN Excuse me Principal Tolen, but we are ready to start the meeting. DORI Ok, Herman. Coming right out. Herman reaches for the binder on her desk. Dori stops him. DORI (CONT’D) I’ll bring it, Herman. See you inside in a few seconds. Dori walks out to the lobby. DORI (CONT’D) In my office, quickly. Dori closes the door. 27 DORI (CONT’D) Are you aware of the school’s policy for smoking marijuana? SATORI You get kicked out? DORI Expelled. Even possibly expelled from the district. I want you in all your classes on time. Mrs. Suppol will check on you each period. After school, you come home with me. Get a note from her and get to class now. SATORI I have Global Citizen, with Mr. J after school. DORI Meet me in front of the school after that. 28 INT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY John Coleman, Vice-Principal BERNARD WILLIAMS, JILL ARTERO, a Spanish teacher, YOLANDA ALLEN, a science teacher, HYACINTH PERRY, an on-site counselor, and Johnna are the STEERING COMMITTEE for the school. Dori and Herman enter the room. DORI Good afternoon ladies and gentleman. Please excuse my fractional tardiness. I do appreciate you time. Dori sits down quickly. DORI (CONT’D) Let’s call this meeting to order. Dori picks up the gavel and bangs it down. ALLEN Our focus is on pushing the agenda items. However, there has been a rather exciting opportunity that came our way this past week. DORI Continue. 29 ALLEN Well, one of our agenda items is to connect our school to the community. Apparently, we aren’t the only ones who share that agenda. So does the First Lady. PERRY Thee First Lady? The President’s wife? ALLEN The one and only - FLOTUS. Allen rises and walks to the diagram of the map of the US. ALLEN (CONT’D) She has created a list of ten cities across the country, that need social outreach program funding the most. Flint, MI is number 3 on the list. JOHN Well, the good news is that she’s not looking to reinvent the wheel. She wants to find programs that are working already, promote and fund them and replicate them throughout the country. 30 JILL I think it’s exciting. We haven’t seen anything close to this kind of attention, ever. DORI Has anyone shared this with Mr. Jennings? ALLEN Not yet. DORI Let’s keep it that way. We’ll share the news at the faculty meeting. INT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM - END OF THE SCHOOL DAY Bradley reads the homework written on the board to his last class. BRADLEY Please complete the language and religion research, for the country you’ve chosen. Fill out the form on my desk and turn it in tomorrow. Bell RINGS The students file out of the room except Paul, Teriann, Satori and Edgar. 31 EDGAR Mr. J, I’ll go get everybody. BRADLEY Take Satori and Teriann, with you please. Paul I need you to help me in here. Satori goes reluctantly. EXT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL - DAY Global Citizen students include an elderly man and woman, BILL and SARAH; single mothers, TANDY and WANDA; and two middle-aged men, TORQUE and YUSUF. They enter Central High School. Edgar, Satori and Terriann greet them, check them in, and walk them toward Bradley’s room. INT. CLASSROOM-DAY Bradley and Paul rearrange the desks, while the others set up a few vegetable trays, potato chips, apples, small plates and napkins on the counter. BRADLEY Make sure you put out enough chips, Paul. Edgar stuffs a handful of chips into his mouth. 32 EDGAR I’m a little hungry, Mr. J. BRADLEY Um hm. That’s what I’m afraid of. Wash your hands man. Bradley puts the books on the tables and props the door open. His CELL PHONE RINGS. It’s Lisa is on the other end of the phone. BRADLEY (CONT’D) You here? LISA Coming in now. Emiko bursts through the door, Lisa follows behind her. Emiko runs to her Dad. EMIKO Daddy!! Bradley swings her around. LISA She’s getting too big for that. Put her down. Bradley swings her around again, then puts her down. 33 BRADLEY My babygirl! We’re getting ready to start. Wanna help Paul finish with the snacks? EMIKO Yes. BRADLEY Ok, take your stuff off and put it in my closet. Emiko puts her stuff away. LISA Sunday, right after church please. BRADLEY I know. Lisa tries to embrace Emiko. Emiko ignores her. LISA She gets around you and forgets who I am. EMIKO Bye, Mommy. Lisa walks out the door and nearly bumps into Satori. 34 SATORI Excuse me. LISA Um hm. BRADLEY Emiko, I have to talk to Mommy. Mind Mr. Paul, ok. (to Paul) Get this started and keep a close eye on her. I’ll be right back. Paul takes Emiko by the hand. Paul initiates the meeting. PAUL Good afternoon. Put your things down, come grab your snacks and let’s get started. Your Global Guide will meet you at your desk. Everyone gathers snacks and take their seats. 35 EXT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT - EARLY EVENING Lisa closes the door on her all white Honda Accord. Lisa CRANKS on the engine. Bradley KNOCKS on the driver’s side window. BRADLEY I read the papers. Can we talk this weekend? Lisa rolls the window down. LISA We can’t. We’re not free until Sunday, and Sunday is your day of rest, remember? BRADLEY I can make an exception if that’s the only day you have. LISA I’m gonna be late. We can finish this later. Lisa peels out of the parking lot burning rubber. Bradley throws his hands up and turns to walk into the school. 36 INT. SCHOOL-HALLWAY-EARLY EVENING Dori strolls down the hall. Bradley sees her in the distance and quickens his pace. Dori quickens her pace. Johnna opens her door and intercepts Dori. JOHNNA Principal Tolen, may I please ask you to take a look at something for me? Principal Tolen is hesitant. JOHNNA (CONT’D) It will only take a minute, I promise. Bradley smiles at Johnna, as Dori and enters his room. INT. SCHOOL - CLASSROOM-EARLY EVENING Paul shows Bill how to read the newspaper on the net, Edgar listens to Torque read to him from Raz-Kids, and Terriann teaches Sarah how to use Netflix. Satori sits with Emiko and plays with her dolls. Satori notices Mr. J walk toward her. BRADLEY Satori, thank you. I can take over with Emiko. Bradley locks eyes with Paul. Paul shrugs his shoulders. 37 BRADLEY (CONT’D) I want you to coach Wanda. Wanda hovers near the snack table. BRADLEY (CONT’D) She’s a bit shy. Why don’t you see if she’ll let you help her today. SATORI Ok. I’m gonna go to the bathroom first Mr. J. Women’s issues. Bradley addresses the group. BRADLEY Do we have any volunteers today that want to lead and read the research you found on involuntary servitude ? Bill raises his hand. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Bill! That’s great. Let’s go up to the main computer? Bill walks up to the main computer, with the assistance of Paul. 38 BILL Thank you, young fella. Bill starts clicking away with the mouse. Principal Dori enters the room. BILL (CONT’D) Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the Unites States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. The room erupts in applause. Dori motions her hand for Bradley to join her at the door. DORI I need you to meet me in my office fifteen minutes before school tomorrow. BRADLEY That’s gonna be tough. I have my daughter and I have to get her to school in the morning. DORI I’ll see you bright and early. Dori walks out of the room. 39 EXT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT - EARLY EVENING Satori walks down the school steps into the parking lot. She takes out her cell phone. She looks up Terriann in her contacts, and calls. SATORI Teriann, you ready to go home? INT. BRADLEY’S CLASSROOM-EARLY EVENING Teriann is on her phone next to the snack table. She looks around the room and sees everyone paired up reading with each other. Wanda sits alone awaiting Teriann. TERIANN (into the phone) Not really. PHONE CONVERSATION-INTERCUT Satori uses a keyless remote to open a car door. She sits inside, turns the music on, and waits for the lighter to heat up. She opens the visor and uses the mirror. She takes out a cigarette. SATORI Well, I’m gonna go to your house and wait for you in the backyard. 40 TERIANN Don’t do that. My Mom’s gonna want us to come home together. SATORI That’s why I want to go now, just so that she doesn’t think I’m being disrespectful. I want her to know I was with you. TERIANN I’ll be out there in five minutes. You out front? SATORI Yes. INT. CLASSROOM-EARLY EVENING Teriann approaches Bradley. TERIANN Mr. J, I need to leave early. 41 BRADLEY Ok, but tomorrow we’re watching the Cuban literacy documentary, Maestra. I need you and the others to be on time and to stay to watch the film. TERIANN Ok, sorry. BRADLEY Good job today. Teriann grabs her things. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Do me a favor? If you see Satori, tell her the same thing. TERIANN Ok. I will. BRADLEY Be safe getting home. Teriann grabs her things and exits the classroom. 42 EXT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT - EARLY EVENING Satori gets out of the car, and waits for Teriann. She puffs on a cigarette. She exhales like a pro. Teriann approaches. They walk off, through the parking lot. TERIANN I thought you stopped. SATORI I started again. TERIANN I can’t stand cigarette smoke. You’re not gonna be able to walk in my house with that on your breath or clothes. Satori smashes the cigarette under her shoe. She takes out air sanitizer. She sprays a bit on her clothes. SATORI Done. I got it covered. I’m gonna go over a friend’s house for the night. 43 Tell your Mom I’m going to stay with my Aunt for the night. Give her a number to my cousin just in case she decides to call. Teriann looks on suspiciously. TERIANN Where are you going? SATORI To my boyfriend’s house. TERIANN Boyfriend who? SATORI Don’t worry. Your Mom is cool and I may not even stay the night, but just in case. TERIANN I’m not lying to my Mom for you. SATORI Just ask you to call me if something funny happens. TERIANN This is crazy. 44 INT. DORI’S CAR- EARLY EVENING Dori looks at her clock. She sits in her car and listens to the radio. She checks her rearview mirror. She looks over her shoulder. No Satori. She looks at her clock. She drives off. INT. CHEVY IMPALA - EVENING Bradley and Emiko ride along in the car. Emiko has her seat belt on in the back seat. The SOUNDS of Whitney Houston blare from the speakers. Bradley and Emiko sing along. BRADLEY AND EMIKO (sings) THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL, IS EASY TO ACHIEVE, I FOUND THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL IS INSIDE OF ME Bradley claps and Emiko takes a bow in the back seat. EMIKO Thank you. Thank you. BRADLEY Hey, what about me? EMIKO Good job, Daddy. 45 BRADLEY Thank you. EMIKO Daddy, what’s her name again? BRADLEY The late great Whitney Houston. EMIKO She died? BRADLEY Yep. EMIKO How did she die? BRADLEY Well, they never really found out. INT. CHEVY IMPALA - EVENING Bradley pulls into his driveway. 46 EMIKO (screams) Daddy!! Look out!!! Bradley slams on the brakes. Satori stands directly in front of the car. Bradley jumps out of the car. He grabs Satori by her arms. BRADLEY Are you ok? Did I hit you? SATORI No, you didn’t. I’m a little startled, but I’ll be ok. BRADLEY What are you doing here? EMIKO Is Satori ok Dad? SATORI I’m fine Emiko. I need to talk Mr. J. BRADLEY About what Satori? Are you ok? SATORI I got kicked out. 47 A neighbor, MRS. ODESSA, stands on her porch and waves to Bradley. MRS. ODESSA Hi Bradley, how you doin? BRADLEY I’m fine Mrs. Odessa, thanks. MRS. ODESSA Ya baby is getting so big so fast. Looks like she was just a baby yesterday. BRADLEY It sure does. Bradley grabs Emiko by the hand. MRS. ODESSA Have a good evening son, be safe. BRADLEY Thank you Mrs. Odessa. BRADLEY (CONT’D) (to Satori) I can take you home Satori. 48 SATORI But Mr. J, I can’t. Please can I come in and talk to you? Mrs. Odessa still watches from her porch. BRADLEY C’mon inside Satori. INT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE-NIGHT Bradley piles all his things onto the couch. Satori has a seat there. BRADLEY Go wash up for dinner sweetie. EMIKO Ok. Satori, I hope you feel better. SATORI Thank you, Emiko!! Emiko smiles. Bradley sits down across from Satori in the living room. 49 BRADLEY What are you doing here? What’s going on with you, Satori? SATORI Well, I’m sorry I scared you. I just didn’t know who else to talk to. BRADLEY Satori, next time, talk to me at school. Then I can help you better. SATORI I know. I’m sorry. I would never want to get you in trouble Mr. J. BRADLEY Let’s not worry about me. What is going on with you? Why were you kicked out? SATORI My Dad put me out on the streets. BRADLEY I’m sure it can be worked out. 50 SATORI It can’t Mr. J. It’s complicated. BRADLEY I’m listening. SATORI Well, my Dad and I have always been very close. He and I have been inseparable, until recently. BRADLEY Go on.. SATORI My Dad got remarried. I don’t get along with her. It’s no secret. She doesn’t like me either. BRADLEY That must be hard on your Dad. SATORI It is. And so I’ve tried to be the bigger person and be cordial to her, but it doesn’t work. 51 BRADLEY Satori, with all due respect. There are kids who deal with many, many issues of severity. I’m not belittling yours, but this is no reason to be out of your house. SATORI My Dad told me I had to like her or leave. BRADLEY I’m sure he was just angry. Satori begins to cry. SATORI I don’t have anywhere to go. Bradley puts his hand on her shoulder. BRADLEY What about other family members? SATORI All my family is back in North Carolina. BRADLEY Satori, we need to call your Dad. 52 SATORI Ok, but he’s not gonna answer my call. BRADLEY Well if we have to, we can call the police. SATORI Please don’t Mr. J. As much as I’m mad at my Dad, I don’t want him in any trouble. Bradley softens. Emiko comes back. BRADLEY Look. I’ll get you something to eat and we’ll call your Dad. INT. TERIANN’S HOUSE - NIGHT Pink walls display Usher, LL Cool J, and Michael Jackson posters. Several plaques and certificates are also on the walls. Teriann lies on her bed in her room with earbuds in her ears. She bobs her head to the music and does math homework simultaneously. A series of unanswered KNOCKS at the door Teriann’s Mom, CYNTHIA RYAN, a forty-something scholarly woman, enters. Teriann doesn’t look up. Cynthia waves in her face. 53 CYNTHIA Hello. Anybody home? Teriann takes the earbuds out of her ears. TERIANN Sorry Mom. I’m studying. CYNTHIA How you are able to do that with music blasting in your ear, is beyond me. (beat) Anyway, Satori is at her aunt’s house? TERIANN Yes, she told me she let you know. CYNTHIA Yeah, well, hopefully, her aunt is gonna let her stay there. TERIANN Yeah, hopefully. CYNTHIA I plan on calling her cousin in a while. 54 TERIANN Ok. Or, I can call her now just to make sure she made it there. CYNTHIA Go ‘head. Cynthia’s Mom sits on the bed and waits. Teriann dials Satori’s number. RING RING RING INT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE-NIGHT RING... Teriann’s name appears on the screen. She runs to the bathroom and answers. SATORI Hey T, what’s up? TERIANN Um, oh, there you are. You made it to your aunt’s ok? SATORI Your Mom must be right there. 55 TERIANN Yep. SATORI Put her on the phone. Teriann hands Cynthia the phone. SATORI (CONT’D) Hi Mrs. Ryan. Glad to be home from work? CYNTHIA I am child. Very. Let me speak to your aunt. SATORI Oh, ok, I need to take her the phone. Satori looks around Bradley’s home. She grabs her backpack. She enters the bathroom. She turns on the faucet. She clears her throat a few times in the phone. SATORI (V.O.) Hello, Mrs. Ryan. What can I do for you? CYNTHIA Hi, I’m just making sure Satori made it to you safely. 56 SATORI (V.O.) Oh yeah. She’s here, sitting on the couch letting the idiot box entertain her. CYNTHIA Ok. Well, I don’t wanna keep you. The connection is kind of choppy. Have a good night! SATORI (V.O.) Thank you Mrs. Ryan. I sure will. Take care. Cynthia hands the phone back to her daughter. CYNTHIA You know you gotta eat sometime soon right? TERIANN I know Ma. I’ll be down in a minute. Cynthia exits the bedroom. TERIANN (CONT’D) Satori? What did you do? SATORI I was my aunt. 57 TERIANN I can’t believe that worked. SATORI It did. Good looking out. I gotta go though. TERIANN Be safe girl. SATORI Always. INT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE KITCHEN - AFTER DINNER Bradley, Emiko and Satori sit at the table. Bradley begins to clear the table. Satori stops him. SATORI Mr. J. I can clean up. That’s the least I can do. Bradley, exhausted, complies. BRADLEY Ok, c’mon Emiko. Let’s get ready for bed. EMIKO Daddy is Satori spending the night? 58 BRADLEY No, we’re gonna help her get home tonight. EMIKO I want her to stay Daddy. Satori overhears from the kitchen. BRADLEY She can’t sweetie. Put your pajamas on. Satori washes dishes. INT. KITCHEN Satori pulls out her phone and pulls up her contacts. She switches her Dad’s work number to his mobile number. Bradley enters the kitchen. BRADLEY I need your Dad’s number. Satori pulls up her Dad’s contact number and gives the phone to Bradley. Bradley dials the number and puts the phone on speaker. 59 JACKSON (V.O.) Jackson Turner here, thanks for the call, but I’m not available at this time. Please leave a detailed message and your call will be returned promptly. BRADLEY Hi Mr. Turner. This is Satori’s teacher, Mr. Jennings. She showed up here at my home. I am trying to bring her home. I can be reached at 323-5557885. Thank you. Bradley returns Satori’s phone to her. BRADLEY (CONT’D) We’ll wait no more than an hour to hear back from your Dad, then I’m taking you to the police station. SATORI Ok, Mr. J. Thank you. Bradley goes over to the cabinet and grabs the tea. BRADLEY Do you want some tea? 60 SATORI Yes. Please. Do you have peppermint? BRADLEY Go have a seat in the living room. The remote is on the couch. You can wait there. I’ll bring the tea in. SATORI Thank you Mr. J. You have no idea how much this means to me. Satori exits. Bradley puts water in the teapot and puts it on the stove. INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT Bradley sits down in his chair. He places the tea cups on coasters. Satori watches Real Housewives of Atlanta. BRADLEY There’s nothing else that interests you on TV? SATORI Yes, Mr. J, but sometimes mindless TV is just what you need. 61 Bradley sips his tea. He keeps checking his phone. BRADLEY What time does your Dad usually get home? SATORI At different times, but usually not before 9pm. BRADLEY 9pm? Bradley looks at the clock. It reads 7:00 pm. Moments later... The clock reads 7:20 pm. The clock reads 8:00 pm. Bradley drifts off to sleep. INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT Satori peeks over at Bradley. She grabs the tea cups and takes them to the kitchen. INT. HALLWAY-SAME Satori tiptoes down the hallway. She arrives at a bedroom door. 62 INT. EMIKO’S ROOM Satori peeks into the room. She sees Emiko sprawled across her bed sleeping soundly with her coat on over her pajamas. INT. LIVING ROOM Satori stands in the doorway and watches Bradley. She removes her shirt and only wears a tank underneath. She saunters over to Bradley. She faces him. He still sleeps. Satori bends down to her knees. She scoots in close to Bradley. She brings her face to his without touching but close enough to feel his breath against her face. She closes her eyes. She leans in and begins to kiss him slowly, tenderly. He responds without opening his eyes. Satori touches his groin. Bradley’s eyes pop open and he jumps, pushing Satori off of him. Satori hits her head on the table. BRADLEY What are you doing Satori? SATORI I thought you liked me Bradley. BRADLEY Mr. J, Mr. Jennings to you. Bradley paces the floor. He grabs his car keys. 63 BRADLEY (CONT’D) Get your stuff Satori. Everything you have. Now. Bradley leaves the living room and walks down the hallway decisively. INT. EMIKO’S ROOM Bradley opens the door. Emiko is fast asleep. Bradley grabs hat, shoes, and a few books. He dresses Emiko. He picks her up and carries her out of the room. She remains asleep. INT. BRADLEY’S LIVING ROOM Satori stands in the living room leaning up against the wall. SATORI I’m sorry Mr. J. Jennings. BRADLEY (whispers) We’re going to the police station. Your father can pick you up there. SATORI Ok, ok, Mr. J. I’ll go home. Please don’t take me to the police. 64 Bradley watches her suspiciously. SATORI (CONT’D) Please. Satori cries and begs. BRADLEY Let’s go. INT. BRADLEY’S CAR - NIGHT Bradley and Satori sit in the front while Emiko is strapped in her seat belt in the back seat. She awakens. She rubs her eyes. EMIKO Where are we going Daddy? Bradley looks in the rearview mirror. BRADLEY Oh, go back to sleep baby. We’re just taking Satori home. Bradley turns on the radio. Jazz plays lightly through the car. Satori stares out the window. Bradley looks straight ahead. Bradley turns his car into an upscale neighborhood. 65 SATORI Go to the end of the block and make a right. Bradley follows her instructions. Sprawling estate-type homes line the street. SATORI (CONT’D) Make a left at the house with the navy blue trim. Bradley pulls into the driveway and keeps the car’s ignition on. BRADLEY Emiko, stay here baby. You can watch me through the window. I’m only going to take Satori to the front door and meet her Dad, Ok? EMIKO Ok, Daddy. Bye Satori. Bradley gets out of his car, quickly. SATORI Bye baby girl. EXT. SATORI’S HOUSE - NIGHT Satori hastens ahead of Bradley to the front door. 66 Bradley turns around to watch Emiko. Satori pushes the doorbell. BRADLEY You don’t have the key? SATORI My Dad took it away from me a long time ago. They wait on the door step. Bradley looks over at Emiko. Bradley rings the doorbell this time. Satori takes out her phone and dials her Dad’s number. No answer. Bradley notices a piece of mail on the mailbox that reads: JACKSON TURNER 928 Woodside Dr. Flint, MI 48503 Bradley RINGS the doorbell again. They wait for a long time. INT. BRADEY’S CAR - NIGHT They sit in the car and wait. 67 BRADLEY Let’s go. I can’t leave you out here. Satori follows Bradley to the car. INT. BRADLEY’S CAR - NIGHT Bradley drives. The police station is in sight. SATORI Mr. J. Mr. Jennings, just a thought, but won’t it be strange that you brought me here so late. Especially with this knot on my head. I mean, I was at your house over five hours ago, after all. Bradley looks at Satori, dumbstruck. She returns the stare. Bradley turns his eyes to the police station, then back at Satori. He rides past the police station. INT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE-NIGHT Bradley places a folded blanket and pillow on the couch for Satori. SATORI Thanks Mr. J. I’m sorry I... Bradley lifts his hands. 68 BRADLEY Don’t thank me. I have no choice. I’ll be in the room with Emiko. I’ll wake you at 5am, so we can get to school before everyone else. SATORI Good night. Please don’t be mad at me. Bradley says nothing. INT. EMIKO’S ROOM-MORNING Emiko’s alarm clock goes off. Bradley awakens. The clock reads: 5:00 am Emiko shifts in her bed. Bradley quickly shuts off the clock. He rises. INT. BRADLEY’S CAR - EMIKO’S SCHOOL Bradley pulls the car in slowly to the curb. He puts the car in park and checks Emiko’s backpack. EMIKO Daddy, you don’t have to do that. I have everything. 69 BRADLEY Where’s your lunch? Emiko holds up a brown paper bag with a flower drawn on it. Bradley smiles and leans in to kiss her on the cheek. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Have a great day baby! When I pick you up, be out front instead of lollygagging with Illya. Emiko opens the car door and gets out. She turns back briefly. EMIKO Bye Satori!!! See you later! SATORI Bye Emiko!! Have fun at school. Bradley watches Emiko walk into the school. He pulls off. BRADLEY Satori, I’m gonna drop you at the corner. The only thing I ask of you is that you talk to your counselor today to get help with your situation at home. 70 And I know you know this, but you can’t tell anyone about last night. Do you understand? Bradley pulls up to the corner. SATORI I understand Mr. Jennings. I’m sorry if I put you in a bad position. Satori begins to cry. BRADLEY Mr. J. Satori. Mr. J. And don’t worry, you’ll get through this, phase. Bradley hands her a Kleenex. He PRESSES unlock on the car doors. Satori grabs her bag, exits the car. INT. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL - HALLWAY - DAY Dori walks the halls, walkie-talkie in hand. Students dash to class. She scans the sea of kids. Satori pulls a few books out of her locker. BELL RINGS Dori approaches Satori. 71 DORI I need to see you in my office now. Satori rolls her eyes, closes her locker door, and walks down the hall. Dori follows. Bradley leans his head out the door to check the halls. He and Satori lock eyes as she walks past his door. Dori’s walkie-talkie alerts him to her presence. DORI (CONT’D) (to Bradley) I need to see you after first period. I have some news I think you’ll want to hear from me. BRADLEY Will do. Bradley closes his door. INT. BRADLEY’S CLASSROOM-DAY Bradley places oversized legal-pad Post-It sheets over the maps in the room. He places two podiums next to each other. He takes his bell out of his desk. EDGAR What you doin’ Mr. J? He stands in front of the class. 72 BRADLEY Today we are playing a game I like to call “Geo Bowl.” Any clue what it’s about? EDGAR Somethin’ to do with the planet? BRADLEY Yep. Good ole fashioned geography. PAUL Aw Mr. J. We ain’t fifth graders. BRADLEY You may not be, but if I hear another person in this country refer to Africa, as a language or a country, I’m gonna lose my mind. Bradley grabs the bell and places it on Edgar’s desk, in front of the podium. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Edgar, you be the time keeper. We’ll divide this side of the room into one team and that side of the room, another. I need two captains, one from each team. 73 A few students raise their hands. Paul almost hits a student with glasses, YVETTE BROONER, in the face swinging his hand. BRADLEY (CONT’D) C’mon Paul, before you hurt somebody with that arm. Bradley surveys the room. BRADLEY (CONT’D) And Yvette. Yvette saunters to the podium. PAUL I take no prisoners. YVETTE Good, because it would be weird to see you lock yourself up. The other students chuckle. BRADLEY Ok, enough small talk. Now, I’ve prepared Geo Bowl questions on index cards. The cards will be face down and I’ll ask the questions. 74 Edgar will ring the bell after ten seconds and whosever turn it is, has to answer. If you’re are right, your team scores the points that are written on the card. If they are wrong, no one scores. YVETTE Do we get a chance to answer their question correctly? BRADLEY That is what Round 2 is about. There will be five questions per round and each team must swap players each round. No one can repeat a round unless it’s the final. Then you can choose one player to represent the whole team. There can be no help from your teammates other than cheering. Any questions? TERIANN Mr. J, what if they don’t answer when the bell rings? BRADLEY We treat it the same as giving a wrong answer. Any more questions? 75 The students shake their heads from side to side, saying “no.” BRADLEY (CONT’D) Let the games begin. Bradley gives Edgar a digital timer. EDGAR Ok, on your marks, get set... PAUL Man, this ain’t no track meet! EDGAR On your marks, get set..go! BRADLEY Yvette’s team goes first. Bradley draws a card from the pile. BRADLEY (CONT’D) This question is worth ten points. Which African country is President Obama’s father from? Your ten seconds starts now. 76 YVETTE Kenya. BRADLEY That is correct. Yvette’s team claps a little bit. Bradley turns to his class. BRADLEY (CONT’D) You guys made me resort to this tactic. So show some enthusiasm. PAUL Man, that was easy. Everybody knows that. I want a challenge Mr. J. Let’s go! INT. PRINCIPAL DORI’S OFFICE - DAY Satori sits at her desk across from Dori. Satori’s arms and legs are crossed. DORI Satori, your father and I have made a decision about how to handle your disappearing acts. Satori turns and faces Dori. 77 DORI (CONT’D) It’s obvious that I’m not going anywhere. SATORI (under her breath) Too bad. DORI And it’s equally obvious that you are not gonna try and work out your issues. SATORI What about you? What about your issues? DORI Like this. The mere fact in your mind that it is okay to speak to me as if I am your peer. SATORI I’m tired of this. DORI Good, because we have enrolled you into Emma Willing Boarding School in Troy, NY. 78 SATORI What?! INT. BRADLEY’S CLASSROOM-DAY Bradley pulls a card from the pile. BRADLEY This question is worth ten points. What African country is home to the Zulu tribe? Your time starts now. PAUL That ain’t fair! She had the easy question. Edgar hums the Jeopardy theme song. He hits the bell. EDGAR Times up. PAUL Hip hop taught me this. South Africa, home of Shaka Zulu. What!! What!! BRADLEY That is correct. 79 YVETTE Whatever. That was easy too. Paul mimes a cat clawing in Yvette’s direction. A KNOCK at the door BRADLEY Take my place Teriann. Keep playing. Bradley walks to the door. He opens the door. DORI You can talk to your father after school today, at home. Anson, will escort you to each class and your Dad will be here to meet you at the end of your last class. BELL RINGS ANSON, muscular, statuesque, security guard, steps into the office. Dori gives him a copy of Satori’s schedule. Satori storms out of the office. Anson follows. Dori sits back in her chair. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK INT. PRINCIPAL DORI’S OFFICE - DAY Bradley sticks his head in the door. BRADLEY You wanted to see me? I have a court date in 1.5 hours. 81 DORI Ms. Harlow’s covering your last class. Have a seat. This won’t take long. Bradley sits. DORI (CONT’D) First Lady, Michelle Obama, as you may or may not be aware of, has created a list that contains the name of ten cities who need social outreach funding the most. BRADLEY I heard. We’re number 3. DORI We were waiting to reveal all the details at the faculty meeting until we got a bit of new information. BRADLEY You most certainly have my attention. DORI Global Citizen Project has been cited as a program that has the potential to make the cut. 82 Dori tosses a copy of the local newspaper to Bradley. He picks it up. A headline reads: LOCAL Flint Community Outreach Programs Who May Make FLOTUS’S LIST: 1. Urban Ethics 2. Urban Yoga 3. Global Citizen Project BRADLEY This is incredible! Wow! DORI It’s on the news stands in the morning. This is a local newspaper with readership of more than 30% of the city. Obviously, your program being selected, benefits all of us. So, I want you to imagine that FLOTUS is watching your every move. Is there anywhere you can improve? Any thing in your personal life that could embarrass or tarnish the school’s image? Bradley walks on the sidewalk to the double doors of the entrance. 84 INT. COURTHOUSE - SAME Bradley puts his items from his pocket, CELL PHONE, WALLET, and KEYS in the container. The SECURITY GUARD waves Bradley through. Lisa empties her belongings into the container and walks through the metal detector. It beeps. Bradley walks through the metal detector. BRADLEY Even the metal detector knows who to double check. Bradley walks off. Lisa catches up with him. LISA What’s that supposed to mean? BRADLEY You know damn well what I mean. That contract you drew up leaves me with nothing but ten percent of the house. 85 LISA Why you feel you deserve anything is beyond me. If I’d stopped paying the taxes, there would be no house to sale. Bradley shakes his head and walks into the double doors of the courtroom. INT. COURTROOM - SAME There are several other COUPLES seated in the courtroom. The air is stale and there is no ventilation. The chairs are wooden, hard, and dated. The BAILIFF enters. BAILIFF Will everyone please rise. Everyone stands. BAILIFF (CONT’D) Please welcome the Honorable Judge Melvin Ballard, of the 32nd municipal court of Genesee County. JUDGE MELVIN BALLARD, an African-American, salt and pepper haired handsome, sixty something year old man, enters the courtroom. 86 JUDGE BALLARD You may be seated. Today we have four cases on the docket. Hopefully, we will complete all four. Judge Ballard opens the first folder. JUDGE BALLARD (CONT’D) At this time, I will call my first case. JUDGE BALLARD (CONT’D) This is a divorce settlement between Bradley Jennings and Lisa Jennings. Please come forward. The Bailiff takes the Bible in his left hand and raises his right. BAILIFF (to Lisa) Place your right hand on the Bible. Lisa places her right hand on the Bible. BAILIFF (CONT’D) Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God? LISA I do. 87 BAILIFF (to Bradley) Same procedure. Bradley places his right hand on the Bible. BAILIFF (CONT’D) Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God? BRADLEY I do. BAILIFF You may be seated. Everyone in the courtroom sits. JUDGE BALLARD Mr. and Mrs. Jennings, the last time we were in front of one another, you committed to finalizing visitation for Emiko. Were you able to come to an agreement? Lisa Jennings rises. 88 LISA Your Honor, we did have conversations regarding visitation, per your instructions. CUT TO: INT. CAFE (FLASHBACK) - DAY Lisa, who sits at a coffee table across from Bradley, holds the cup tightly in her hand. BRADLEY (whispering loudly) You must be out of your mind if you think you’re going to keep my daughter away from me for weeks at a time! LISA You are being unrealistic. With your job and program being a priority, how are you gonna have time to drop her off, pick her up, take her to gymnastics, feed her, make sure she does her homework, put her to bed... 89 BRADLEY You know good and damn well I have and can do that better than you. You’re busier than I am working your way up the corporate education ladder. How’s the new ride treating you? Lisa throws her coffee at Bradley. Bradley jumps back from the table and out of harm’s way just in the nick of time. CUT TO: INT. COURTROOM - DAY LISA But we were not able to reach an agreement. Bradley fumes. Judge Ballard notices. JUDGE BALLARD Mr. Bradley, would you like to expound on that? Bradley rises. 90 BRADLEY Absolutely your honor. It is true that we had a disagreement during our attempt to resolve the custody issue. However... CUT TO: EXT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE (FLASHBACK) - DAY Bradley gets out of his car and closes the door. He walks past a semi-circle driveway, with plush green grass, up to a fancy house. He rings the doorbell. The door opens. Lisa is standing there. BRADLEY Hi Lisa. How are you? LISA Good. Emiko’s in her room. She doesn’t know you’re here as we agreed. Come in. INT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE (FLASHBACK) - DAY Bradley walks in to the impressive home. Before Lisa walks off, he grabs her elbow. BRADLEY Before you get her, is Gregory here? 91 Lisa doesn’t acknowledge his comment. LISA Gregory’s in the bar area. Why? BRADLEY I want to talk to him. Now is as good a time as any. Bradley follows Lisa. Lisa’s phone rings. LISA He’s right over there. I gotta take this call. INT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE (FLASHBACK) - DAY BAR GREGORY HUNTER, a fifty-seven year old, distinguished, African-American man, extends his hand to Bradley, for a handshake. They share a firm handshake. Gregory offers Bradley a seat. GREGORY What can I get you to drink? BRADLEY I’ll have something light. I gotta drive my kid home. 92 GREGORY How about a glass of wine? BRADLEY A glass of Pinot Noir, red will work, if you have it. GREGORY Coming right up. BRADLEY So Gregory, I’m glad we have a few moments alone. I need to talk to you about my daughter. GREGORY If you hadn’t insisted, I would’ve. I was married before, and I know how I felt the first time another man was around my child. Gregory hands Bradley his drink. Gregory offers Bradley a seat. BRADLEY My daughter means the world to me. I need you to really understand that. And I need you to know that I’m very protective of her. 93 GREGORY I have every intention of treating her the way I treat my own children. BRADLEY To be honest, I prefer her to live with me, but Lisa feels the same. Lisa enters the bar area. LISA So what are we talking about? GREGORY Just a few things that we need to talk about. LISA Like what? What is that you two have to talk about that I can’t be a part of? GREGORY Baby, don’t over react. It’s just a few things regarding Emiko. LISA Whatever regards Emiko, regards me. 94 BRADLEY This was a private conversation between the two of us. Man to man. LISA You agreed to having a private conversation with my man regarding our daughter? Why don’t you think I should be allowed to listen? BRADLEY I don’t need the interruptions Lisa. It’s simple. LISA You act like I would allow my daughter to be around a man that would mistreat her. That’s insulting. BRADLEY I knew it. Bradley rises. GREGORY Let me work this out. (to Bradley) Give me a minute. 95 Bradley stops and waits. LISA I be damn if he’s gonna control the situation in the house I lay my head. It doesn’t make any sense. Bradley speaks to Gregory. BRADLEY Excuse me man, would you mind going to get my daughter. We’ll do this another day. LISA How rude? You talk to him as if I’m not here. Gregory goes to get Emiko. Bradley ignores Lisa. INT. COURTROOM - DAY Bradley stands before Judge Ballard pleading his case. BRADLEY ...it’s almost impossible to have a productive conversation with Lisa turning it into something about her. 96 I just needed to speak to the man that would potentially be spending a lot of time around my child. Even he understood that. Judge Ballard addresses Lisa. JUDGE BALLARD Mrs. Jennings, it is a good sign and a necessary conversation due to the circumstances. It is important that all adults, directly influencing Emiko’s life, be on the same page. The Judge closes his folder. JUDGE BALLARD (CONT’D) However, due to the difficulty both of you have acknowledged of coming to a custody decision that is in the best interest of the child, I will have to interview Emiko and find out what she wants to do. Bradley and Lisa are both stunned. They look at the Judge, then at each other. CUT TO: 97 EXT. SCHOOL - DAY Satori stands next to Anson, the security guard. A black Audi A5 pulls to the curb in front of them. Jackson parks and gets out of the car. He walks up to Anson to shake his hand and Satori stares at her Dad, irate. She storms past Anson to the car. She slams the car door. Jackson walks back to his car and gets in. INT. SCHOOL - HALLWAY - DAY Bradley walks down the hallway. A few STUDENTS are scattered at their lockers, including CARL. CARL Hey Mr. J! BRADLEY Hey Carl, you stayin’ out of trouble? CARL You know it. Just finished taking my ACT. BRADLEY Good stuff. Stop by and see me if you need a letter of recommendation. 98 CARL Will do! Bradley opens a door that reads “Counseling Office,” on the window. INT. SCHOOL - COUNSELING OFFICE - DAY Bradley enters the small room that contains three different offices side-by-side. The doors to the offices are closed. A withered plant stands in the corner. A huge desk separates DELILA, a student service worker, and Bradley. DELILA High Mr. J! How can I help you? BRADLEY Hi Delila. Is Mrs. Peters in? DELILA Yes, she’s in there. Just knock on her door. BRADLEY Thank you. Good job in here young lady. DELILA Thanks for hooking me up with it Mr. J, cause I couldn’t stand another class with Ms. Young. I can’t have nobody messing up my G.P.A. 99 Bradley knocks on MRS. PETERS, a veteran, well-liked, teacher turned counselor’s door. MRS. PETERS (V.O.) Come in! INT. SCHOOL - COUNSELING OFFICE - MRS. PETERS’S OFFICE - DAY Bradley enters and takes a seat next to Mrs. Peters’s desk. BRADLEY Hi Mrs. Peters, how’s the day treatin’ ya? MRS. PETERS Well, better now that it was you at the door and not another whining teenager who’s trying to get out of a hard class. Bradley chuckles. BRADLEY Is it that bad Mrs. Peters? MRS. PETERS Sit here long enough and you’ll witness two or three with your own eyes. 100 But what’s new? What can I do for you Mr. Jennings? BRADLEY I have a student, Satori Turner. Do you know her? MRS. PETERS Of course I know her. She likes to get sick and miss school a lot. I’ve been trying to get a meeting with her father, but he’s always working. BRADLEY Well, I don’t think she’s a good fit for my class. Like you said, she misses a lot and when she’s there, she distracts the other students. I think she’d do a lot better in Mrs. Hughley’s class. MRS. PETERS Close the door. Bradley closes the door. MRS. PETERS (CONT’D) You might be on to something Mr. Jennings, because her mother died a few years ago. Were you aware of that? 101 BRADLEY I am aware of it. But I never knew how she died? Mrs. Peters opens her file cabinet. She pulls out a file labeled, SATORI TURNER. She reaches inside the file and pulls out an article. She puts it in front of Bradley. The article reads: Wife’s Infidelity Ends in Murder Bradley scans the article. BRADLEY (CONT’D) So this was Satori’s mother? MRS. PETERS Yes. Poor girl was thirteen years old when it happened. Her mother is from here, so they buried her here. Her father packed up and moved out here, so Satori could be near her Mother’s memory. I wanted you to know because you’re so good with kids. You sure you can’t help her? Bradley ponders. BRADLEY I don’t think so. She comes to my after school program when she’s at school. 102 MRS. PETERS Do you still recommend she work with Mrs. Hughley instead? BRADLEY See what you can do. It might be good for her to have a female role model like Mrs. Hughley. MRS. PETERS Understood. INT. JACKSON’S CAR - DAY Jackson and Satori ride in silence. Satori stares out her window. Jackson looks over at her, unsure of what to say. The silence is painful. SATORI How could you? JACKSON Excuse me? SATORI You let her finally convince you to get rid of me for good, huh? 103 JACKSON Stop being dramatic Satori. You were the one who said you always wanted to go live in New York. You said you hate it here and I thought you might be happy. SATORI Happy? How can I be happy when my father chooses his new wife over me? JACKSON You are not in competition with my wife. You’re my daughter, and no one can take your place. SATORI Who’s idea was it to send me to New York? To boarding school? JACKSON We both agreed that it was the best thing for you since you think it’s okay to stay out all night and have me worried sick. 104 SATORI You always know I’m at Teriann’s . And I wouldn’t have to stay out if I felt comfortable in my own home. Jackson pulls the car over. JACKSON Look baby, something has got to change. You have to understand that I have a right to move on. I have a right to be happy. I wish your Mother had been different. I wish she would have chose us, but she didn’t. I love you and I only want what is best for you. But I’m not a woman and I was hoping you could enjoy Dori and what she has to offer you. SATORI Dad, how can you be so blind? She is not who you think she is. I’ve tried with her. She just wants your money. JACKSON We’re not gonna go into this Satori. We’ve been down this road too many times. 105 I have to know in my heart that I’ve given you the best opportunities out there. I think New York is one of them. SATORI Dad, please don’t send me away. Please. JACKSON Babygirl, I don’t want to but what kind of choice have you given me? SATORI Let me stay! What do I need to do to show you I’m serious about changing? Just name it. Give me another chance. Please. Jackson looks into the eyes of his child. It’s impossible to refuse her. JACKSON You’re are set to leave in three weeks. I have your ticket purchased and your enrollment is complete. If you can show me in three weeks time that you will be in all your classes, do all your homework, and be home by 7:00 pm each night, we’ll see. 106 Satori wraps her arms around her Dad. She is truly happy. JACKSON (CONT’D) There’s one more catch. SATORI What? JACKSON You have to ride to school with Dori in the morning. SATORI But Dad, I thought you agreed with me that it was better for me if people didn’t know she was married to my Dad. JACKSON Your stepmother can drop you off a block away from the school. No one has to know, but it will give you two a little bit of bonding time. SATORI But Dad??!!! 107 JACKSON No butts. Remember, you said you’d do anything. No negotiations here. Jackson pulls off in his car. INT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE-NIGHT Bradley sits in his chair with his head in his hands and a book in his lap. He goes to his computer. On the computer screen, he types in “digital ilteracy.” He finds a few articles. He clicks on a statistic that reads: DOOR BELL RINGS Bradley goes to the door and stares through the peephole. He sees Johnna with something in her hand. Bradley yells through the door. BRADLEY Who is it? JOHNNA It’s me. BRADLEY Me who? 108 JOHNNA Me open up the door. BRADLEY What’s the password? JOHNNA Cilantro Salmon on seasoned brown rice. Bradley opens the door. Johnna enters. JOHNNA (CONT’D) You had thirty seconds to open that door. BRADLEY Or what? He quickly takes the casserole dish out of her hands. JOHNNA Or me and my Salmon would’ve found somewhere else to go. BRADLEY I’m sorry. You actually picked the perfect time to come. Bradley places the dish on his kitchen table. He grabs Johnna by the hand. 109 BRADLEY (CONT’D) Come look at this new stat for the National Institute for Literacy. SUPER In the city of Flint, the literacy rate is 35 percent, one of the highest across Michigan and almost double the statewide average of 18 percent. JOHNNA Wow! I bet Global Citizen has something to do with that number in Flint. BRADLEY If, if we are having that kind of impact, can you imagine what would happen if we set up shop in Saginaw, Grand Rapids, and Detroit? JOHNNA It would be great if we can get that number to the ultimate goal, 85%. BRADLEY Did you just say “we?” 110 JOHNNA No I did not say we. BRADLEY Yes you did. JOHNNA No I didn’t. BRADLEY Yes, you did! JOHNNA Maybe I did. Johnna rises from the computer. JOHNNA (CONT’D) Seriously, Bradley, that’s fantastic. May I use your kitchen to heat our dinner? BRADLEY Absolutely. I’ll set up the plates in here, so we can work while we eat. 111 INT. BRADLEY’S KITCHEN-NIGHT Johnna turns on the oven. She allows it to preheat and she grabs two wine glasses out of the cupboard. Bradley grabs two plates out of the cupboard next to her. He reaches around her waist to open the drawer with utensils. Johnna attempts to scoot herself out the way. Bradley reaches successfully into the drawer and grabs two forks and two knives without touching Johnna. INT. SATORI’S HOUSE - NIGHT Satori and Jackson enter the house. Dori sits on the sofa in the living room. She has books and papers sprawled across her lap. SATORI Hi Dori. Satori prances right past her before she can respond. Dori watches then turns her stare toward Jackson. JACKSON Honey, have you eaten? Jackson walks past Dori before she responds. 112 INT. SATORI’S HOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT Jackson throws his coat on the kitchen chair. He opens the refrigerator. Dori stands in the doorway of the kitchen. Jackson knows she’s standing there. Jackson pulls food out of the refrigerator and takes them to the kitchen sink. Dori walks up behind him. DORI You mind telling me what the cynical smile from Satori was all about? JACKSON Do you want a salad? DORI No, I ate. Thank you. Dori approaches Jackson. DORI (CONT’D) Did you talk to her about boarding school? JACKSON I did. DORI And what did she say? Jackson stops making the salad and turns to Dori. 113 JACKSON She’s supposed to go three weeks from now, right? DORI Yes. JACKSON Well, I told her that I had already purchased her plane ticket. DORI How did she take it? JACKSON She presented a good offer. She promised to be on time for school everyday, to come home by curfew each night, and to do what she knows she needs to do in the next three weeks. She offered that in exchange of not going. He turns to the sink to continue making his salad. JACKSON (CONT’D) And she has to ride with you and get dropped off a block away from school in the morning. 114 DORI If three weeks comes upon us, and Satori is still exhibiting the same behavior and you allow her to talk you out of boarding school, I’ll be the one leaving. Dori walks out of the kitchen. Jackson drops the bowl in the sink. EXT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE-NIGHT Bradley opens the car door for Johnna. BRADLEY So tomorrow you’ll help me with the registration table? JOHNNA I get to do the hard work while you get to serve ice cream?! BRADLEY You can do whatever you want to do. I just hope you’re there. Johnna smiles. 115 JOHNNA I’m there. BRADLEY Thanks for all your help tonight. JOHNNA My pleasure. Bradley leans in, and kisses her on the cheek. Johnna blushes and rolls up her window. Bradley waves good bye. Johnna backs out of the driveway. Bradley stands in the driveway for a little longer. INT. DORI’S CAR - NEXT DAY Dori and Satori ride while Classical MUSIC PLAYS from the radio. DORI I am not your father. I, however, must respect his right to parent you the way he chooses. Please know that the moment you miss class, and decide to go a different route, I will notify him immediately. SATORI Don’t worry, I will be on my best behavior.. 116 Dori pulls to the curb. Dori unlocks the doors. Satori exits the car. EXT. CORNER ONE BLOCK AWAY FROM THE SCHOOL - DAY Dori drives off. Satori stands for a moment. Dori watches Satori from the rearview mirror at the stop sign. Satori catches Dori’s gaze and walks toward the school. Dori turns the corner. INT. CLASSROOM-DAY Bradley pulls the projector down from the ceiling. Edgar turns off the lights and Bradley plays the projector. There is a knock at the door. Edgar opens the door. A STUDENT hands him a note. Edgar reads it and closes the door. Edgar walks the note to Bradley. The note says, Satori Turner, please report to Mrs. Peters’s office ASAP. BRADLEY Give that to Satori. EDGAR For you. Satori reads the note and grabs her purse and walks out of the classroom. 117 INT. SCHOOL - COUNSELING OFFICE - DAY Satori opens the door to the Counseling Office. Delila is at the desk. Satori tosses her note on the desk to Delila. Delila looks at Satori with disdain and then at the note. Delila walks around the desk to Mrs. Peters’s door. DELILA Mrs. Peters, Satori Turner is here to see you. MRS. PETERS (O.S.) Send her in. DELILA You can go in. INT. SCHOOL - COUNSELING OFFICE - MRS. PETERS’S OFFICE -DAY Mrs. Peters clears books off the chair next to her desk. MRS. PETERS Have a seat Satori. Satori sits. SATORI Mrs. Peters I know I’ve been doing good. Why did you call me down here this time? 118 MRS. PETERS Young lady, relax. Yes, I too know you’ve been in school, for one, and I haven’t had any complaints. I just have an idea. Satori relaxes. SATORI Ok. MRS. PETERS How about changing your history class from Mr. Jennings to Mrs. Hughley? SATORI Why? MRS. PETERS Well, I think Mrs. Hughley has a lot to offer a young lady like yourself. I think you may do exceptionally well in her class, under her guidance. SATORI I’m doing ok in Mr. J’s, I mean Mr. Jennings’s class. 119 MRS. PETERS I don’t call a ‘D’ ok. SATORI That’s only because of absences, which is not gonna happen anymore. MRS. PETERS Well, we just think it might be a better fit for you. SATORI We? MRS. PETERS I did discuss it with Mr. Jennings and he agreed. SATORI Did he come talk to you? MRS. PETERS I don’t see why that’s relevant. We spoke to each other. 120 SATORI Mrs. Peters, I am in an after school program with Mr. Jennings, also. Does he want me to quit that? MRS. PETERS No, Satori, he didn’t say that at all. It just might be a better fit for you in history to be in Mrs. Hughley’s class. That way you will have a better chance to improve your G.P.A. Satori is hurt. SATORI Whatever, Mrs. Peters. You know best, right? MRS. PETERS Good. I’ll make the change this afternoon. For now, you can return to class. Mrs. Peters signs her note and gives it back to her. Satori takes the note and walks out the office. INT. BRADLEY’S CLASSROOM-DAY A trailer of a documentary, From the Outside Looking In, is projected onto the screen. The trailer highlights the literacy problem in America. 121 BRADLEY Global Citizen has been put on a watch list of programs to be duplicated throughout the United States, by the First Lady of the United States of America! Cheers and applause fills the room. EDGAR I’m gone be famous!!!! TERIANN Do we get to meet her? PAUL You know everybody will try to be down with us, now that we have a little bit of fame. BRADLEY If we can get more students to join, we can get more people reading and writing. Right? PAUL True, true. But still! 122 BRADLEY So, this news comes at a good time. I want us to make a video of our group, similar to what you just saw. There is a knock at the door. Bradley answers the door. It’s Satori. She hands him the note. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Come on in. SATORI Did you want me out of your class? BRADLEY We’ll talk about this later, Satori. Have a seat. Satori enters the classroom. Bradley returns to the front of the room. BRADLEY (CONT’D) I want to celebrate all your hard work, so congratulations, but we haven’t been chosen yet. Take out your notebooks. I’m gonna go fast, so keep up. 123 INT. SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE - LOBBY - DAY Johnna walks into the lobby. She places flyers for the ice cream social/fundraiser in teacher’s boxes. The school secretary, OLIVIA HINES, sits behind her desk and opens email on her computer. She gets an email titled: Test Scores Revealed. OLIVIA Principal Tolen, are you here? DORI I’m here Olivia, come into my office. Olivia runs into Dori’s office. Johnna walks in closer to hear the conversation between Olivia and Dori. OLIVIA The test scores are in. DORI Come login on my computer. Olivia logs in. She opens the email. It reads: SUPER: The school’s overall proficiency level is at 34%. This falls below the required 50% proficiency for the city of Flint. As a result, your school will be restructured under the Mayor’s Plan, in time for the subsequent school year. 124 Dori sits back into her chair. Olivia is devastated. Johnna enters. OLIVIA I’m gonna lose my job. DORI We all are gonna lose our jobs. OLIVIA Is there anything we can do to change their minds? JOHNNA Professor Tolen, we’re number two on FLOTUS’s list. If we win that top spot, with all the visibility we’ll have, they’ll have to know we’re doing something right and do everything possible to save our school. OLIVIA What do we have to lose. This says we’re being restructured, not that we might be. DORI I’m gonna put everything we’ve got behind Mr. Jennings. 125 Johnna, please let Mr. Jennings know I want to see him immediately after his last class today. JOHNNA Right away. INT. BRADLEY’S CLASSROOM-DAY The students work in groups at their tables. Bradley walks around the room. He looks at the clock. BRADLEY Ok, everybody, it’s time to start cleaning up. Good work today. BELL RINGS Satori picks up her books slowly. She lingers and waits for most students to leave the room. Bradley is near the door. He looks back into the class and sees Satori. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Satori, we can talk over here. He motions her toward the doorway. Satori smirks. She walks to the door. Bradley bends over to put the door stop under the door properly, to keep it open. 126 SATORI I’m listening. BRADLEY Satori, I think it’s best for you to switch into Mrs. Hughley’s history class, because she’d be able to spend more time with you one-on-one in her tutoring program. SATORI Mr. Jennings, I know the real reason you want me out of here. I’m a big girl. I get it, but what about Global Citizen Project? BRADLEY You’re a big help, and as long as your focus can stay on the reason we are all there, you and the program can continue to benefit from you being a part of it. Johnna enters the room and interrupts Bradley and Satori. JOHNNA Bradley, Principal Tolen... Satori walks past Johnna quickly. 127 SATORI Hi Ms. Harlow. Bye Mr. Jennings. JOHNNA Bye Satori. Johnna watches Satori. JOHNNA (CONT’D) What’s going on with her? BRADLEY What’s up? You came in here bubbling with excitement. JOHNNA I’m just here to make sure you get to Principal Tolen’s right now. BRADLEY But I have a class about to come in. JOHNNA I’ll cover for you. She wants to see you now. Bradley walks down to the Dori’s office quickly. 128 INT. SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE - LOBBY Satori stands behind the counter with Olivia. Olivia is at her desk on the phone. OLIVIA Yes, the Principal’s breakfast is Saturday, at 10 am...Yes...You’re welcome. Have a good day. Olivia hangs up the phone. OLIVIA (CONT’D) These parents need to read the newsletters. Satori, I need you to handle the phones and the counter. Olivia grabs a tampon out of her purse and hands the purse to Satori. OLIVIA (CONT’D) Put that in that on the shelf, please. Satori opens the doors to the counter. The top shelves are full. She bends over and puts Olivia’s purse down below. Bradley walks into the office. He sees no one in the lobby, so he goes to Dori’s door. INT. SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE - DAY It’s open, but he knocks anyway. 129 BRADLEY Principal Tolen, you wanted to see me? INT. SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE - LOBBY Satori hears his voice. She scoots toward Dori’s door. INT. SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE Dori looks up from her desk. Bradley remains at the door. DORI Come in, Mr. Jennings. Have a seat. Satori stands at the edge of Dori’s door. DORI (CONT’D) Mr. Jennings, we just got the test scores back. BRADLEY How did we do? DORI We are scheduled to be restructured. BRADLEY So you’re starting with me? 130 DORI Not so fast. Johnna reminded me that we are number 2 on the First Lady’s list. That means we have a good chance of being number 1 when it counts. DORI I think it’s worth a shot for all of us, if I can put full school and financial support behind your program. BRADLEY With all due respect, I never thought I’d hear that come from your mouth. DORI If we all work together, it can help you and definitely help me. SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE - LOBBY Olivia comes back from the bathroom and sees Satori near Dori’s door. OLIVIA What are you doing? Satori is startled. SATORI Oh, nothing. Can I borrow one of your tampons? Olivia reaches into the counter’s shelves and pulls out a tampon and gives it to Satori. SATORI (CONT’D) Thanks. I’ll be right back. Satori enters the rest room. Bradley exits Dori’s office. INT. SCHOOL - RESTROOM- DAY Satori stands inside the stall. She tosses the tampon into the small, side trash bin on the wall. She leans against the door for a few moments. A light bulb moment happens. Satori comes out of the stall. She washes her hands and leaves. INT. SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE - LOBBY Satori barges into the office and enters. Olivia is still present. 132 SATORI (to Dori) I need to talk to you right now. It’s important. Olivia quickly leaves the room. DORI Sit down. What is it, this time, Satori? SATORI If a teacher touches you inappropriately, what are you supposed to do? Dori rises and closes the door. INT. SCHOOL - HALLWAY Dori, the SCHOOL POLICE OFFICER, the teachers’ union rep, Yolanda Allen, Johnna, and Anson walk down the hallway to Bradley’s room. Bradley stands at the board, writing. BRADLEY The discovery of Martin Luther threatened to demolish the authority the Catholic Church had established. 133 The door is opened. Dori, the Security Guard and School Police Officer stand on either side of her. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Principal Tolen is something wrong? DORI Johnna will cover your class. I need you to come with me and gather all your personal belongings. Johnna steps inside and grabs Bradley’s arm and gives it a squeeze. The students watch every move. BRADLEY Class, Ms. Harlow will take over from here. Bradley grabs his bag from the chair. He walks to the hallway. INT. SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE Dori sits in her seat. Vice-Principal Bernard Williams and Yolanda stand to her right and the School Police Officer and Anson stand outside the door. BRADLEY What is this about Principal Tolen? 134 DORI Mr. Jennings, you have been accused by a student of sexual molestation. BRADLEY What?! That’s impossible. DORI It is possible and it has been reported to the School Board and Child Protective Services, per mandate. BRADLEY Who? Who accused me of this nonsense? DORI I am not at liberty to say, for the protection of the student. Bradley turns to Yolanda. BRADLEY What rights do I have? Yolanda hands him a card. 135 YOLANDA Here’s the number to our legal rep. I suggest you contact him immediately, before responding to anything. Bradley stunned, takes the card. DORI You are suspended immediately. You have the right to your job pending investigation. You have to be escorted off campus by the School Police Officer and a witness. You will have the right to respond to the allegations in writing. Do you have any questions? BRADLEY What about my program? DORI All activities related to students specifically ones that utilize school facilities are not able to be conducted until the investigation is complete. 136 BRADLEY This is some bullshit! DORI Mr. Jennings, make it easier on all of us and cooperate peacefully. BRADLEY What about my students? DORI We will notify them of your temporary leave effective immediately. I do need you to sign these documents stating that you understand the accusations. Dori pushes the documents across the table and offers her pen. Bradley shoves the pages to the floor. The School Officer and Security Guard step into the office. Bradley rises from the chair, grabs his bag, and walks past both of them, through the door. EXT. CONVENIENCE STORE - DAY Bradley drives his bright blue, 1965 Chevy Impala into the parking lot of the store. 137 INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - DAY The store is small and cluttered, like all convenience stores. Bradley walks up to the counter. An Arab man with a wrap neatly around his head, JAMAL, forty-ish, knows Bradley. JAMAL Long time no see Bradley. Came to visit? Bradley shakes his head, no. JAMAL (CONT’D) Well, what can I do for you? BRADLEY You know J. Jamal stares at Bradley for a long moment. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Don’t make this harder than what it is man. Bradley puts his $20 bill on the counter. Jamal stares at Bradley one last time and then takes the money off the counter. He disappears for a moment. He returns and tosses a pack of Camel Cigarettes on the counter and Bradley’s change. JAMAL Have it your way, man. 138 Bradley grabs the pack and his change and leaves. INT. BLUE CHEVY IMPALA - DAY The Camel cigarettes are in the pack on the dashboard. Bradley drives into his driveway. Two local news vans are parked in front of his house. BRADLEY (O.S.) What the...? Bradley grabs the pack of cigarettes, puts them in his pocket, and puts his hat on his head. He quickly gets out of the car and walks to his front door. Two reporters and their cameramen rush Bradley. Bradley picks up his pace. REPORTER 1 Mr. Bradley Jennings, did you sexually assault your student? REPORTER 2 How do you respond to the sexual molestation accusations? INT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE-DAY Bradley ignores them and quickly enters his house and slams the door. He grabs his head and falls back into the door. 139 Bradley quickly recovers and closes the blinds in the living room. He goes to every room in the house and closes the blinds and curtains. He goes to his bedroom and turns on the television. ON TELEVISION REPORTER 1 We are outside the home of Bradley Jennings. He is the high school History Teacher accused of sexually molesting one of his female students. The School Board has placed him on leave until the investigation is complete. Bradley sees a picture frame of Emiko’s picture on his dresser. He turns the TV off and takes out his cell phone. He calls Lisa. Phone RINGS. LISA (O.S.) Yes, Brad, how can I help you? BRADLEY I need you to pick Emiko up from school today. 140 LISA (O.S.) You know I can’t do that. I’m working. Why can’t you do it? BRADLEY Will you ask Gregory to pick her up, it’s important. LISA (O.S.) You’re scaring me, what’s going on? BRADLEY I’ll meet you at your house as soon as possible and explain everything. LISA Is everything alright with you? BRADLEY It will be. I’ll see you in a few hours. Bradley hangs up the phone. Bradley takes out the card from his pocket. The card reads: Legal Rep - Teacher’s Union Bill O’Nelson 810-555-3232 Bradley looks through the living room window. The news trucks are gone. 141 Bradley grabs a hat and his keys and walks out the door. INT. LAW OFFICE - DAY BILL O’NELSON, the teachers’ union attorney, sits in his office. He is watching the local news listening to the report on Bradley Jennings. A BUZZ sounds. Bill mutes the TV. His Secretary, PATTI, chimes in. PATTI (O.S.) Mr. O’Nelson, there is a Bradley Jennings here to see you. He says it’s urgent, shall I patch him through? BILL Absolutely. INT. LAW OFFICE LOBBY - DAY Bradley sits in the chair waiting to go into the office. The SECRETARY hangs up the phone. PATTI You may go in now, Mr. Jennings. 142 BRADLEY Thank you. Bradley enters the room. INT. LAW OFFICE - DAY Bill pulls the chair out, in front of his desk, for Bradley. Bradley doesn’t sit. BRADLEY I can’t sit down. BILL I know this is a lot. You might want to take a seat. Bill extends the chair, again, to Bradley. Bradley sits. BRADLEY How did the press find out? Isn’t that illegal to use my name? BILL All the privacy protection is for the child, not the adult. 143 BRADLEY This is ridiculous. My life is in shambles and nobody, not one person has asked me what happened. BILL That’s what I’m here for. I want you to quickly read this, sign it, and then we can speak freely and everything you say is protected. BRADLEY Aren’t you automatically my attorney? BILL Your dues pay for me to represent you, yes. But your needs are a bit beyond the normal scope of that representation. So just in case you move in another direction, this form will protect you, moving on. Bradley signs the form. BRADLEY What are my rights? I can’t believe someone can just make an accusation against you, and I can’t defend myself? 144 BILL Mr. Jennings, I understand. But, this is the way it’s done when it comes to education. What you can do, is tell me your side. I want to know what happened from your point of view. BRADLEY Well, I think the accusation comes from Satori Turner. Can you at least confirm that much? BILL That is correct, Mr. Jennings. Bill pulls a piece of paper off his desk. He hands it to Bradley. BILL (CONT’D) This is the formal report. Please take a moment to read it. Bradley scans the letter slowly. SATORI (V.O.) I needed Mr. Jennings’s help because I got confused on my way to my friend, Teriann’s house, where I was staying. 145 I was walking down the street when Mr. Jennings and his daughter pulled up in the driveway, in the car. He almost hit me. Mr. Jennings got out of the car and wanted to help me right away. His daughter was around so I felt safe. I accepted a meal and then we tried to go to my Dad’s house. No one was home. After that, Mr. Jennings asked if I wanted to stay over on his couch, until I could reach someone. I fell asleep. I assumed he and his daughter also fell asleep. Next thing I know, Mr. Jennings was touching me and kissing me awake. I pushed him off of me right away and got my things and got out of there. He insisted that I get in the car and let him give me a ride to school. He apologized and asked me not to tell anyone. He didn’t mean to make me feel uncomfortable. Bradley tosses the letter onto Bill’s desk. He gets up and paces. BRADLEY This is some bullshit! Wow! 146 BILL Mr. Jennings, we need to respond to this letter, professionally and strategically. BRADLEY I have a daughter and I’m right in the middle of a custody battle. BILL Life is complicated. But my goal is to make it less complicated for you. Bill pulls out the chair. BILL (CONT’D) Have a seat. Do you drink coffee? BRADLEY Tea. Bradley sits. Bill sits at his desk. He calls Patti on the SPEAKER phone. BILL Patti, will you bring Mr. Jennings a cup of herbal tea. 147 PATTI Yes sir. BILL So let me just give you a timeline. First thing we’ll do, is write a statement. Second thing we’ll do is hold a press conference. It’s become a local high profile case, so the school board will respond. It will simply be said that the school has suspended the teacher accused and will perform the necessary investigation. It will take 24-36 hours for a response. The investigation has already begun. It will take another 24 hours to have the first meeting with you and the school board. I know you’re not prepared for the media attention, but it’s a blessing in disguise. BRADLEY How so? BILL It causes the school board to move a lot faster, with the press watching. In the meantime, your response to the press is silence. 148 Try to look as normal as possible and keep your cool. All eyes will be on your reactions. BRADLEY What about my custody case? Patti knocks at the door and enters. She carries a cup of tea. She sets it on the desk atop a coaster for Bradley. BILL Thank you Patti. (to Bradley) I can’t lie. This won’t help you. Let’s take one day and one step at a time. Right now, let’s get this statement completed. Bradley picks up his tea from the desk. EXT. EMIKO’S SCHOOL - DAY Lisa drives into the school’s parking lot. There are a few cars scattered in the lot. She gets out of her car and runs to into the school. 149 INT. EMIKO’S SCHOOL - COMMUNITY ROOM - DAY Lisa peeks through the door of the community room. Emiko is in the community room with three other KIDS. The kids are running around the room playing freeze tag. She is relieved, smiles. Lisa opens the door. EMIKO Mommy!!! LISA Hey baby! Lisa and Emiko embrace. EMIKO Where’s Daddy? LISA He had a meeting and asked me to pick you up baby. Lisa grabs Emiko’s hand and they walk out the door. INT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE - NIGHT Gregory sits in the living room in front of the TV. The local news shows a picture of Bradley. Gregory is stunned. He stands up and turns the volume on the TV up. 150 REPORTER 1 Today, Bradley Jennings, a well-respected Global Citizen Project, founder and teacher was accused of sexual molestation. The identity of the student is being protected as the investigation ensues. Gregory picks up his cell phone and calls Lisa. Phone RINGS INT. LISA’S CAR - NIGHT Lisa picks up the phone, answers. EMIKO Mommy you’re not supposed to touch the phone when you drive. LISA I know baby, but it’s Greg. (to Gregory) Hold on babe. Lisa puts her earpiece on. 151 LISA (CONT’D) Hey babe. I forgot to tell you Bradley asked me to pick up Emiko. INT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE - NIGHT Gregory holds the phone to his ear. GREGORY Are you on speaker phone? LISA No, I have on my earphones. Did you hear me? Bradley asked me to pick up Emiko. GREGORY I bet he did. INT. LISA’S CAR - NIGHT LISA What’s that supposed to mean? GREGORY Babe, just get here. We’ll talk. 152 LISA You’re scaring me, is everything alright? INT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE - NIGHT GREGORY Everything’s OK, just get here safely. Do me a favor, if Bradley calls, don’t answer the phone. LISA What? I can’t do that Greg. What if he wants to speak to Emiko. GREGORY Babe, just for once, trust me and wait until you get home. Let it go to voice mail. You’ll be here soon enough. INT. LISA’S CAR - NIGHT LISA In about thirty minutes babe. GREGORY I’ll see you soon. Drive safely. 153 LISA OK. Bye babe. Lisa hangs up the phone, looks into the rearview mirror at her daughter. EXT. DRIVE THRU - NIGHT Bradley drives into the Taco House’s parking lot. He pulls up to the speaker. WORKER (O.S) Welcome to Taco de Casa, may I take your order please? BRADLEY Yes, I’d like 3 turkey tacos with Provologne Cheese and mild sauce please. WORKER (O.S.) Would you like any side orders and drinks with your order? BRADLEY No thank you, that’s all. WORKER (O.S.) Your total is $6.87 please pull to the window. 154 Bradley puts on his glasses and pulls his hat down tighter on his head. He arrives at the window. The WORKER opens the window. WORKER (CONT’D) $6.87 sir. Bradley gives the worker his card. The worker examines the card. WORKER (CONT’D) Debit or credit? BRADLEY Credit. WORKER May I see your ID, please? Bradley gives the worker his ID. She examines the card and notices his name. She looks up at the TV screen. BRADLEY May I have my ID back please? The worker hands him his ID. She gets his food and gives it to him. BRADLEY (CONT’D) Thank you. 155 INT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE - NIGHT The doorbell RINGS. Gregory opens the door and Bradley walks in. Bradley and Gregory give each other a handshake aka a grown man’s pound. GREGORY What’s going on man? BRADLEY Are Lisa and Emiko here yet? GREGORY They’re about five minutes away. BRADLEY This has got to be the worst day of my life. GREGORY Want a drink? Gregory walks toward the bar. Bradley follows. GREGORY (CONT’D) What can I get you? 156 BRADLEY Just a beer man. Do you have a Heineken? Gregory reaches in the bar refrigerator and pulls out a Heineken. He takes a can opener and pops off the top. He hands the bottle to Bradley. Bradley takes a long swig. Greg guides him to the sofa. They sit. GREGORY So you gonna tell me why you’re on the news, or do I have to ask? BRADLEY It’s a long story, but just know that it’s the wrong story. I want to tell you and Lisa together, because I’m gonna really need your help. You know it’s hard for us to see eye-to-eye over simple things, let alone this. GREGORY Enjoy your beer man. She’ll be here by the time you finish. 157 INT. SATORI’S HOUSE - NIGHT Jackson and Dori stand in the dining room. Satori is in the other room watching television. She can hear them discuss she and the teacher. DORI See, if you would’ve listened to me sooner, we wouldn’t be going through this. JACKSON Now is not the time for “I told you sos.” DORI But I did. She needs 24 hour, 7 days a week supervision. JACKSON Right now she needs to be heard. I will kill this man Dori, so it’s real important for me to know what really happened. Jackson walks to the television room to speak to Satori. Dori follows. TV ROOM Jackson turns the television off. Satori sits in silence. Jackson and Dori sit next to Satori. 158 JACKSON (CONT’D) Baby, we need to talk. I wanted to give you some space, give me some space, but I really need to know what happened. SATORI I told you Dad. JACKSON I know, but I have some questions of my own. SATORI OK. JACKSON Why didn’t you come to the office, that night, if you came here and we weren’t home? SATORI Because Dad. I wasn’t thinking straight. JACKSON But that doesn’t make sense. If the man was trying to drive you home, you knew where we were. You knew Dori was helping me at the office. And you had your key. 159 SATORI So this happened because of me? JACKSON I’m not saying that baby. I’m sorry. You just don’t know how hard this is for me. You’re my baby girl. It’s my job to protect you. SATORI It’s not your fault Daddy. DORI Your father is very angry right now. He just needs to talk this out with you. SATORI So is it OK if we talk? Just the two of us? Dori rubs Jackson’s back. He gives her a nod. Dori leaves the room. SATORI (CONT’D) I never get time with you Dad. Never. I always have to share you with her. 160 JACKSON Baby, you know I’m working hard so that I can spend all the time with you in the world. SATORI Yeah, but you’ve been saying that since I was six. I’m sixteen now, Dad! If you were gonna change, it would’ve already happened. Satori gets up and storms off to her room. She SLAMS the door. INT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE - NIGHT Lisa and Emiko pull into the driveway of the house. She sees Bradley’s car parked nearby. Lisa gathers her things and gets out the car. EMIKO Daddy’s here! Emiko runs to the door. Lisa grabs her key and opens the door. INT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE - BAR/FAMILY ROOM Bradley and Gregory can hear Lisa and Emiko enter the house. Bradley puts the Heineken down on the coffee table. 161 EMIKO (O.S.) Daddy!! Daddy!! Let’s go!! BRADLEY I’m down here baby. Emiko skips into the family room. Bradley meets her halfway. Lisa comes right behind Emiko. Bradley picks up Emiko and hugs her to him tightly. He is teary-eyed. Lisa notices. Gregory beckons to Lisa. Lisa gives him space. EMIKO Daddy, let’s go! We’re gonna miss Baskin’ Robbins! Bradley kneels before her. BRADLEY I have to change my plans babygirl. Some things came up, so you’re gonna stay here tonight. EMIKO No! Daddy you promised. BRADLEY I know, but have I ever broken a promise to you. Emiko puts her hand under her chin to think. Bradley, Lisa, and Gregory laugh. 162 EMIKO Maybe once. BRADLEY I don’t think so! EMIKO OK, no. She hugs Bradley. LISA Baby go upstairs and get ready for bed. Emiko runs to give Greg a hug, then runs upstairs. 163 EMIKO Bye Daddy! BRADLEY Bye baby. Emiko disappears. LISA What’s going on Bradley? BRADLEY I’ve been accused of molesting one of my students. It’s all over the news. Lisa looks to Gregory. He nods, yes. BRADLEY (CONT’D) And I don’t want our child to suffer, because someone at her school may recognize me and take it out on her. GREGORY That’s what I wanted to tell you honey. 164 BRADLEY Look, I can assure you both, it’s a lie. Lisa, you know one of my Global Citizen students, the one who Emiko talks about, Satori? LISA Yes. Why did she accuse you of that Bradley? BRADLEY Because she came to the house the other night. She showed up in my driveway. Emiko was with me. She claimed she’d been put out on the streets by her Dad. LISA And? BRADLEY So I stupidly let her in and tried to help her reach her Dad. Emiko was hungry, so my plan was to feed her and take her to her Dad. That’s what I did, but inbetween the meal and her not being able to reach her Dad, I dozed off for a minute. Next thing I know, she’s straddled me and kissing me awake. 165 LISA What? Where was my baby? Gregory shakes his head. BRADLEY In her room. She didn’t see anything. LISA How do you know, you were sleep! BRADLEY I got her off of me immediately. I told her to grab her things and I got Emiko dressed and was headed straight to the police station. GREGORY And what happened that you didn’t make it there? INT. CAR-NIGHT (FLASHBACK) Bradley drives. Satori sits beside him. Emiko sits in the back seat. SATORI Emiko, do you have your headphones? 166 EMIKO Yes. SATORI I want you to listen to your favorite song. EMIKO How? SATORI I put it for you on your phone while you were napping. EMIKO Yes!! Thank you. Emiko puts her headphones on. BRADLEY (O.S.) And she says to me... SATORI You know the police may not look at you so well, if you’re bringing me to the station after I’ve been at your house all this time. If my parents may have reported me missing and it could mean trouble for you. Can we just try my house first please? 167 INT. LISA’S NEW HOUSE - NIGHT LISA And you got scared and listened to her? BRADLEY What choice did I have? She did have a point and I didn’t need any more drama at the job. LISA Well, it’s too late for that now! GREGORY Have you spoken to an attorney? Union rep? BRADLEY That’s where I was all afternoon. I had to respond to the statement she filed and now just wait for a reply before the process gets started. They placed me on leave with no pay. GREGORY No matter what, Emiko comes first. LISA Of course. 168 BRADLEY Look, I just need you guys to keep her until all this mess dies down. The press vans have been showing up at my house. He opens the door. 169 INT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE-NIGHT Bradley turns to close the door. Johnna walks up on the porch. BRADLEY What are you doing here? JOHNNA Can I come in? BRADLEY Sure. Bradley lets Johnna in. He closes the door. Johnna has two bags of food in her hands. She goes to the couch. She takes off her coat and puts it behind the chair. She takes the food out the bags and sets it up in front of the couch. JOHNNA Eat. Bradley takes off his coat, hat, and kicks off his shoes. BRADLEY I can’t. JOHNNA Didn’t ask you that. Eat. 170 Bradley stares at her for a moment. Too tired to fight, he sits. She hands him his wrap. JOHNNA (CONT’D) Chicken schwarma with extra garlic sauce. Bradley takes the wrap and begins eating. Johnna says nothing. She turns on the television, to watch HGTV. Bradley eats a bit faster. Bradley reaches for a purple pickle next to her wrap. INT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE-NIGHT - MOMENTS LATER Bradley looks at Johnna like a lost puppy dog. He begins to open his mouth to speak. Johnna reaches over and places her finger atop his lips, to silence him. Bradley closes his eyes and puts his head down. Johnna walks over to the couch to sit next to him. She caresses his face. He places his hand atop hers. She holds his head in her arms. Tears fall from his face. JOHNNA I know who you are. Bradley kisses Johnna passionately. Johnna responds. Bradley lays Johnna down on his couch. 171 INT. SATORI’S HOUSE - NIGHT Satori turns up the music loud in her bedroom. LIVING ROOM Jackson and Dori sit side-by-side reading books. Jackson looks up toward Satori’s room when he hears the loud music. Dori looks at him and shakes her head, no. Jackson tries to concentrate on his book again. BEDROOM Satori flails around the room, dances strangely. She stares in the mirror and puts black eye pencil cat-style on her eye corners. She puts on red lipstick and kisses her mirror. She takes a selfie with her camera phone. She sends it to Twitter, and tweets: Life is precious and #lonely both at the same time. God can save me now, since y’all couldn’t. #humanrace She opens her drawer and takes out a bottle of pills. The label says DORI TOLEN. She opens the pills and puts the bottle in her mouth and emptying them into her mouth. She grabs a bottle of water and drinks it. She turns her music up even louder. She begins to dance again around the room. She cries out loud. SATORI Mama, take me with you! Take me with you! She dances wildly until she falls to the floor. 172 LIVING ROOM Jackson puts his book down. Dori grabs his arm. He shakes her hand off. Jackson darts upstairs. INT. SATORI’S HOUSE - NIGHT Jackson knocks on the door. No answer. Jackson knocks again. No answer. JACKSON I’m coming in! Jackson opens the door. Satori is on the floor, unconscious. JACKSON (CONT’D) No!!!! INT. HOSPITAL - NEXT DAY Jackson and Dori sit in the waiting room. The DOCTOR comes into the waiting room. DOCTOR Mr. and Mrs. Turner? JACKSON Yes. 173 DOCTOR Satori is going to be fine. She gave us a real scare. But she’s in the clear. We’re gonna monitor her in ICU for 24 hours, just to be sure we got everything out of her stomach. JACKSON Thank God. DOCTOR Due to the nature of what she’s in for, we did contact the Social Worker. That’s protocol. He beckons to a glasses-rimmed wearing, SOCIAL WORKER behind him to step forward. SOCIAL WORKER Mr. and Mrs. Turner, I know that this is a difficult time, but we have to discuss Satori’s reason for being here. JACKSON We understand. 174 INT. BRADLEY’S HOUSE-NEXT DAY Johnna wakes up to her alarm clock, on her phone. It reads 6:00 a.m. She pops up out of the bed. She looks around the room. She quickly puts her clothes on. She walks out of the room. INT. BRADLEY’S KITCHEN-DAY Bradley has bought breakfast. He gives Johnna a plate. He has a smile on his face. BRADLEY I want to thank you for last night. JOHNNA My pleasure. BRADLEY I really mean it. I want you to know that I’ve thought about you long before I was having an issue in my life. JOHNNA I know. BRADLEY You know? 175 JOHNNA Yes. BRADLEY How’d you know. JOHNNA Women just sense things like that. Bradley kisses Johnna softly on her lips. BRADLEY Now, you have to get to work. JOHNNA And what will you do? BRADLEY I am going to contact the attorney and have him help me come up with a way to keep my program afloat. I can’t meet at the school, but I hope my kids can keep the program going. I just have to find out what I can and can’t do as far as communication. JOHNNA Well, let me know when you do. I can always help. 176 Johnna smiles. Bradley follows her out the door. INT. BILL’S LAW OFFICE - DAY Bradley enters Bill’s office. Bill sits behind his desk. Bill rises and comes to Bradley. BILL I have some sad, but incredibly good news to give you. BRADLEY What? BILL Dori Tolen called my office this morning. Satori Turner attempted suicide last night. BRADLEY Oh no! Is she alright? BILL She’s fine. She’s recovering. BRADLEY How’s that good news? That makes my situation worse. 177 BILL On the contrary. She confessed to the Social Worker that she was lying about the accusation. She told the truth, that she came on to you and you rejected her. BRADLEY Thank you Jesus! BILL So, this means your job will be re-instated and your name cleared. BRADLEY But what about the press? BILL Well, unfortunately, the school board will release a statement, stating that you’ve been cleared of all charges, but they can’t disclose Satori’s private information. BRADLEY So people will still have the imprint in their mind that I’m guilty. 178 BILL Some people will. Some people won’t. The good news is that the law is on your side. BRADLEY Now. INT. SCHOOL - NEXT DAY MONTAGE Bradley, Johnna, and his STUDENTS leave the school building. Lisa, Greg, and Emiko meet them outside. Emiko grabs Bradley’s hand. Greg and Lisa join them. They take a walk to the neighborhood. They knock on doors and pass out pamphlets. They talk to people about the program. They read to some people. They write with people. Bradley and Johnna read to young CHILDREN and their PARENTS in the park. INT. SATORI’S HOUSE - DAY Satori and her Dad laugh with each other and play chess. Dori brings them food to eat. INT. WHITE HOUSE - MONTHS LATER The First Lady of the United States of America (FLOTUS) stands at a podium on the White House Lawn, and announces her program choices. 179 FLOTUS And the number one social outreach program in America, is...Global Citizen Project, based out of Flint, Michigan. We will be implementing the program across the country. There are three people standing beside FLOTUS. Bradley is on the end. FLOTUS (CONT’D) Mr. Bradley Jennings, we salute you! Bradley walks toward FLOTUS and shakes her hands. She gives him an AWARD and they pose for pictures. Emiko is allowed to shake FLOTUS’s hand. Bradley waves to Johnna who sits in the audience beaming.
