ABSTRACT
FIBER STRUCTURE
by
Pierrette Cote
Master of Arts in Art
The idea of my work is to be flexible, natural,
simple and abstract.
The major portion of this work
used rope with one or two elements and formed bands
of variable sizes.
I arranged them the way I wanted,
interrelated them, folding them and changing them to
accommodate my inspiration of the moment; this can be
the final form or if my mood changes I can transform
it into something completely different.
life to the forms,
mo~ing,
There is a
changing position and
arrangement, making space for the shadow and always
in a simple form.
At the beginning of this work I used unspun sisal
that I wove with nylon.
The rectangular shapes were.
bent to achieve a particular form.
The unpredictabil-
ity of this method made me look for a simpler process.
vi
After using several different media I found that
I like to use rope because of its stark reality, and
its natural fiber.
Rope is also a very practical
element to work with; it can be purchased in many
different sizes.
All I need is some rope and a small
tool and I am free to create whatever my imagination
can see.
For me it is important to keep art simple
and to be able to express myself anytime and anywhere.
Material, lines and spaces are there for the
abstract meaning.
Abstraction has always been an
interest of mine and I feel that it can also give
an object freedom for any viewer.
They are given
the chance to create whatever image or representation
they want; it gives them a greater chance to think
for themselves.
I think that if given the choice,
most people like to process their own ideas from what
they see, hear or feel.
For myself, to abstract is
to add another dimension, to give more choices.
My art is dominated by the absence of colors and
details to express the idea that "less is more."
