Workshop to focus on Dover's
climate change strategy
How might changes in rainfall, temperature, storms and
rising sealevels affect the City of Dover? Be part of the
response and join fellow residents for a workshop on
helping Dover prepare for climate change. The workshop,
"Preparing for Climate Change in Dover: Gaining Insights
and Charting a Course," will be held on Thursday, Jan. 22,
2015, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the McConnell Center
cafeteria, 61 Locust St.
During the workshop, residents will learn about regional
climate change, how it might affect Dover, and specific
actions that can help the city prepare. The workshop is
open to all, including residents and businesses, City board
and commission members, and City staff and elected
officials. Refreshments will be provided. The workshop follows roleplay simulation sessions that
began in 2012. These sessions presented residents with
hypothetical climaterelated problems that needed to be
solved together. The January workshop is the third in a series planned
through the winter of 2015.
Space is limited. RSVP online at tinyurl.com/doverclimate3
or to City Planner Steve Bird at 5166008
or [email protected].

Mystery Author K.D. Mason at
Dover Library Jan. 21
Local author K. D. Mason will
be speaking at the Dover
Public Library on
Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 7
p.m. Copies of his books will
be for sale and can be signed
by the author at the event. A lifelong runner and sailor, K.D. Mason lives on the New
Hampshire seacoast with his wife of over 40 years and two
cats, Molly and Sweet Pea. They have two grown children.
Recently retired from a lifetime of working in the restaurant
business, he now weaves
compelling tales of mystery,
romance and suspense set
on the NH Seacoast. Years
of sailing in the Caribbean
and New England, as well as
hanging out with an active
running community, have
given him a wealth of story
ideas. Each of his books begins and
ends in the fictionalized town
of Rye Harbor, New
Hampshire. Locale plays an
important role in each of his
stories, ranging from Newport, Rhode Island to Belize, to
the White Mountains and Massachusetts North Shore and
southeastern Maine. Readers are drawn into the lives of
Mason's core cast of characters, who populate each of his
books, as they deal with life, love and each other while they
handle the mystery and suspense that accompanies the
discovery of an occasional dead body.
K.D. Mason's sixth book, "Unexpected Catch", joins
"Harbor Ice", "Changing Tides", "Dangerous Shoals", "Killer
Run", and "Evil Intentions" in his popular Jack Beale
mystery series. He has just started work on his seventh
book scheduled for release in November 2015.
This program is free and open to the public. Contact the
Dover Public Library at 6035166050 with any questions.
Motorist safety patrol expanding to
Spaulding Turnpike in Dover Motorists stranded with minor vehicle problems on the
Spaulding Turnpike in Dover, and anywhere from
Portsmouth to Rochester, will soon find help. The New
Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT)
introduced this week a Service Patrol truck for the
Spaulding Turnpike during early morning and afternoon
commuting hours.
The goal is to improve safety along the corridor and reduce
the potential for significant traffic tieups by clearing minor
incidents, such as flat tires, charging a battery or vehicle
overheating, as quickly as possible. Minor incidents like flat
tires and running out of fuel on a congested highway have
the potential to cause secondary incidents. Motorist Safety
Patrols (MSP) can help reduce the potentially significant
impacts of otherwise minor incidents by lending assistance
to stranded motorists. The MSP will communicate with the
NHDOT's Traffic Management Center (TMC) in Concord,
which has direct contact with NH State Police and other
emergency responders.
The MSP will operate during the winter months in the early
morning and late afternoon hours Monday through Friday,
5:30 to 8 a.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m., and during the summer
months on Monday through Thursday, 5:30 to 8 a.m. and
3:30 to 6 p.m., on Friday from 5:30 to 8 a.m. and 3:30 to 7
p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays 10 a.m. to
6 p.m. Extra coverage may be added on holidays and for
special events.
This service is an extension of the publicprivate partnership
between the NHDOT's Bureau of Turnpikes and State
Farm Insurance for sponsorship of the Motorist Safety
Patrol on Interstate 95 (Blue Star Turnpike). As part of the
sponsorship program, the MSP vehicle will include the
State Farm logo as well as enhanced, highlyreflective
safety markings to make the vehicle more visible to
motorists, especially at night. The sponsorship will also
include highway signs indicating patrol areas along the
covered routes.

D I D Y O U K N O W? The following events are recorded in "Notable Events in the
History of Dover, New Hampshire: From the First
Settlement in 1623 to 1865," by George Wadleigh, "Historic
Rambles About Dover," by Robert A. Whitehouse, "Port of
Dover: Two Centuries of Shipping on the Cochecho" by
Robert A. Whitehouse and Cathleen C. Beaudoin, and
several other historical sources.
For more on the history of Dover, settled in 1623 and the
oldest permanent settlement in New Hampshire and
seventh oldest in the country, visit the Dover Public Library,
Locust Street; and the Woodman Institute Museum, Central
Avenue. The Public Library also maintains an online
collection of historical information, located at
http://www.dover.lib.nh.us/DoverHistory/cityof.htm. Jan. 16, 1766 Lee, part of the original territory of Dover,
and afterwards of Durham, set off and incorporated as a
town. Jan. 22, 1770 The town voted to build anew bridge over
Cochecho River "at the upper ware next below Capt.
Waldron's mills at the lower falls." Two hundred pounds
were raised by tax for the purpose and two shillings lawful
money was to be paid per day to the men working on the
same, finding themselves. A meeting was held Feb. 26, to
see if the town would reconsider the above vote, when "by
polling" it was voted not to reconsider. Jan. 19, 1810 The memorable "Cold Friday" occurred in
Dover, of which mention is frequently made by New
England historians. The thermometer ranged all day long
from 15 to 20 degrees below zero while the wind attained
to the proportions of a hurricane. A family in Sanbornton,
whose house was prostrated by the gale, perished before
its members could reach the nearest shelter, a half mile
away. A stage driver on the route from Boston to Salem,
was found frozen stiff upon his box with the reins in his
hands, when the horses halted before the hotel door in
Lynn. Jan. 19, 1819 "Our bleak and inhospitable winters have
been this year exchanged for vernal weather and delicious
westerly winds. Our December and January have
resembled our old fashioned May and June, and the ground
has not yet been covered with snow. On the contrary our
Southern brethren have been visited by one of our rigorous
winters and are everywhere whining about snow and frost."
(Newspaper report.) Jan. 16, 1844 A fire in Harper's Furniture Store (Badgers
building) almost destroys the office of the Dover Enquirer. January, 1910 Under a new New Hampshire law,
effective Jan. 1, 1910, the auto registration fee was raised
to $10 and the speed limit in Dover raised from 8 to 10
mph, and in rural areas from 20 to 25 mph. Later that same
month, many complaints are raised about horses being
raced on Sixth Street. The mayor declares to end the sport.
A speedway, wide enough for four or five horses, was to be
preapred on Silver Street, starting at Arch Street. But local
horsemen, not satisfied with the speedway, convince the
mayor to create a new speedway through Torr's Woods on
Durham Road, starting near the location of the current high
school.
