Dr Ali Taheri has been elected as an
honorary member of the Iranian
Mathematical Society (IMS) and an
associate editor of its bulletin (BIMS).
Ali joins a board of world-leading mathematicians whose
members include Maryam Mirzakhani (Stanford), who
made history in 2014 as the first woman to be awarded
the Fields Medal, Cumrun Vafa (Harvard), a winner of
the Breakthrough Prize (Physics Frontiers Prize 2014)
and Freydoon Shahidi (Purdue) for groundbreaking work
with R.P. Laglands (IAS) and P. Sarnak (IAS).

The enterprising young bakers of SUMS (Sussex
University Maths Society) held a bake sale last
Thursday 3 December to raise funds towards next
year’s Maths Ball.
A steady footfall (not all of it from the School Office,
I hasten to add!) resulted in over £120 worth of cakes
being sold.
Mathematics inter-session week 25-29 January
An exciting opportunity for 2nd year Mathematics
students to participate in fun seminars, lectures and
activities that will be relevant for skill and academic
development. Join us for expository lectures by our
faculty to introduce fun twists in current mathematical
challenges and for public engagement lectures.
