MPS Weekly Update 3 December 2015 www.sussex.ac.uk/mps/internal/staff/mps_weekly_update Join us for a glass of mulled wine and nibbles at this first-ever school-wide MPS Christmas event for staff and students. Tuesday 8 December 7pm-8pm Chichester I lecture theatre Dr Simon Peeters Nobel neutrinos FREE - NO NEED TO BOOK Drinks & nibbles after the talk Poster kindly produced by Naomi in the School Office Nominations for the student-led teaching awards are now open until 18 March 2016, with students nominating online via the Students’ Union. All students are able to nominate a member of staff – academic, admin or technical – who has made a difference to their teaching and learning experience at Sussex. There are three key changes to this year’s awards: Students do not have to decide the category for the award when nominating The nominee will not be eligible unless more than one student submits a nomination (group nominations are acceptable but each student should include their name on the nomination form) The awards will be decided by a panel of reps from across the cluster (including a student rep from each school) To nominate, visit www.sussexstudent.com/SLTA A significant number of international students remain on campus over the Christmas vacation so, for the past few years, International Student Support have produced a ‘Christmas Programme’ which pulls together information about events happening on campus and in the local area over the holiday period. This year’s programme is now available www.sussex.ac.uk/internationalsupport/tripsandevents/christmas The University of Sussex’s permanent city shopfront on Lewes Road has now opened. The information centre provides a showcase for the University’s range of courses, its research expertise and displays of student work. www.sussex.ac.uk/staff/ newsandevents/?id=33174 Win a night’s stay for two at the Grand Hotel in the latest University hotel competition www.sussex.ac.uk/staff/ newsandevents/?id=33246 https:// sussex.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/ library-its-survey-2015 Departmental seminars coming up Astronomy MASS Thursday 3 December 3pm Pev 3 5C11 Dr Igor Velcic (Zagreb) Homogenization of thin structures in nonlinear elasticity Thursday 3 December 4pm Pev 3 5C11 joint with ADPE Dr Duvan Henao (Universidad Catolica de Chile) Local invertibility in Sobolev spaces with applications to nematic elastomers and magnetoelasticity ADPE www.sussex.ac.uk/apde/research/seminars Monday 7 December 3pm Pev 3 5C11 Yves Capdeboscq (Oxford) On proper data sets for elliptic hybrid inverse problems Mathematics PG Seminars www.sussex.ac.uk/maths/research/pgseminars/ forthcomingevents Thursday 3 December 5pm Pev 1 2A3 Francesco De Anna (Institut de Mathématiques de Bordeaux) Introduction to paradifferential calculus Mathematics news www.sussex.ac.uk/astronomy/ newsandevents/calendar Friday 4 December 4pm Arts A05 Amelie Saintonge (UCL) Gas accretion and star formation as drivers of galaxy evolution AMO Thursday 3 December 12noon Jubilee 118 Dr Michael Hartmann (Heriot-Watt University) Photons in networks of superconducting circuits Monday 7 December 2pm Freeman FRE-G31 Prof Axel Kuhn (Oxford) Hybrid quantum processing with cavity photons and single atoms EPP https://epp.phys.sussex.ac.uk/epp/ Seminars_2015_16 Thursday 3 December 1pm Pev 3 5C11 Matthew Musgrave (UoS) Neutron physics at ORNL and the NPDGamma experiment TPP www.sussex.ac.uk/tpp/research/seminars Monday 7 December 4pm Pev 3 4C10 Matthew Tamsett (UoS) TBA Physics & Astronomy news CONGRATULATIONS Dr Jillian Scudder recently received the Newcomer Award, given by SEPnet, for her public engagement work. To those who were aware of him, Colin the budgie arrived in Chichester I courtyard in early summer and settled in quite happily with the resident sparrows, blue tits, blackbirds et al. With the current ‘improvements’ taking place to the space and oncoming colder weather, concerns grew for his long-term wellbeing. I can now report that Colin has been safely re-housed in an aviary in Chichester (the city). Perhaps we should have employed him as an MPS tweeter . . . If you have any news for our web pages and social media feeds, our Information Co-ordinator, Justine Charles, would be delighted to hear from you. E [email protected]
