Daniel Hajas and David Turner with the TGD model
Third-year Theoretical Physics student, Daniel Hajas, will be meeting MPs at
the Houses of Parliament to highlight the challenges he and other visually
impaired people face in learning science and maths.
The continually inspiring Daniel, who also organises the Sussex Universe
lecture series, will be taking part in the British Council for Undergraduate
Research’s (BCUR) annual ‘Posters in Parliament’ exhibition next February,
which gives UK undergraduates the opportunity to showcase their research
to politicians and policymakers
Since starting at Sussex, Daniel has been working on ways to help visually
impaired learners engage with the charts, graphs and equations that are a
staple of science courses.
During his first year he invented a device that translates visual information,
such as graphs, into a tactile format.
He is now working on developing the concept of his ‘Tactile Graphics
Display’ (TGD) with help from a scheme that encourages undergraduate
research at the University and with the assistance of second-year physics
student David Turner.

As well as his day job as research
technician in the mechanical workshop,
Alan Butler is also a long-term
member of the University Rescue Team,
usually dealing with incidents involving
humans but, earlier in the week, five
kittens were discovered near Pevensey 2 loading bay.
Thankfully, together with their
Mum, they have all found a new
home. If anyone would like to
make a donation to the upkeep of
this feline family, go to
