MPS Weekly Update
26 March 2015
CONGRATULATIONS!
We are pleased to announced that Konstantinos
Blazakis (Costas, as he is affectionately known)
successfully defended his thesis on Wednesday 18
March.
His research thesis is entitled ‘Computational
methods for investigating cell motility with
applications to neutrophil cell migration’.
Costas developed a mathematical and computational framework,
using optimal control theory based on physical principles, to model
cell migration in two and three dimensions. Cell migration is closely
linked to many important physiological and pathological events, such
as the immune response, wound healing, tissue differentiation,
embryogenesis, inflammation, tumour invasion and metastasis.
Understanding the ability of cells to alter their shape, deform and
migrate is of vital importance in many biological studies.
We congratulate Costas (one of the smiliest people in MPS, Ed!) on
this significant achievement.
Feng Wei Yang, aka Tim, a
research fellow in Mathematics,
this week collected the Young
Researcher Best Paper Prize.
(see left for details)
From 1 April 2015, Professor Antonella De Santo
will be taking over from Dr Bertram Düring as
Director of Doctoral Studies.
