MPS Weekly Update 26 February 2015 Physicists from the University of Sussex working on the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider will take part in the 'Big Science Weekend' at the Brighton Science Festival 28 February1 March at the Sallis Benney Theatre, Grand Parade, Brighton www.brightonscience.com/events/big-science-Saturday. The Sussex ATLAS group will be ready to answer all your questions! The discovery of the Higgs Boson marks a major breakthrough in physics and paves the way to a new era of investigations. With the start of the second run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in just a few weeks, what's next for the LHC experiments to explore? The theme of this year's exhibition is ‘The Higgs Boson and Beyond’, addressing questions such as: why is the mass of the Higgs Boson the one that has been measured, and can its value be explained by the new theory of Supersymmetry? Supersymmetry, or SUSY, predicts the existence of new ‘partners’ of known particles, which have so far eluded detection. Some of these particles, called neutralinos, could explain the nature of Dark Matter, which constitutes about a quarter of our Universe. Come and talk to the Sussex ATLAS team from the Experimental Particle Physics group to discover how they are investigating matter on the smallest scale while trying to unveil the secrets of Dark Matter. New Perspectives in Analysis and Probability 2-6 March 2015 Friday 27 FebruarySunday 1 March LE GEEKEND in the Brighton Science Festival The purpose of this workshop is to discuss recent developments in analysis and probability and to explore future directions for common interaction. This event also celebrates the recent appointment to the Mathematics department of several lecturers and professors in analysis and probability. The workshop consists of five one-day mini-conferences, each devoted to a special topic. See www.sussex.ac.uk/maths/research/intensive2015 for details of the topics and speakers.
