Course Overview
During the Fall and Spring semester you will conduct an individualized independent
reflective project, which reflects your understanding of science teaching and learning,
and your philosophical underpinnings developed throughout your graduate program. In
addition to this project you will also attend weekly Friday seminars on critical issues in
science teaching and learning.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, students will have:
Examined and reflected on the interconnectedness between all the courses which
comprised their graduate program a NYU.
Reflected on and responded to the essential questions on planning and preparation,
classroom environment, instruction and professional responsibilities as they begin to
prepare their teaching portfolio.
Course Requirements:
1. Attendance at all class meetings.
2. Active participation in all aspects of your courses including, class discussions and
seminars.
3. Complete all three course assignments
Assignment Information:
For this one credit year long course you have three assignments. Each assignment builds
on the previous.

Assignment A
For Assignment A you should answer the following questions:
What is your philosophy of teaching and learning?
Who/what informs your philosophy?
What are your expectations of your program/courses?
These responses should be based on your philosophy at the beginning of your Science
Education program.
This assignment should be uploaded to the dropbox team folder Culminating Seminar by
November 15th.2014d2014rod folder Culminating Seminar 1,2,3 by September 30th
2013.
Assignment B
Revisit Assignment A and now reflect on your current philosophy.
What is your current philosophy?
Have you noticed a change?
What has informed that change?
Your response should be uploaded to the dropbox team folder Culminating Seminar by
January 31st. 2015.
Assignment C
Reflect on your responses to Assignments A&B and then answer the following:
What is your current philosophy?
What aspects of your courses contributed to that change? Discuss what you
learned?
Do you think you are now better prepared to teach in New York City or another
urban setting?
What are your expectations of your upcoming teaching position?
This final assignment should be uploaded to the dropbox team folder Culminating
Seminar before the final day of the 2014 summer institute.
