This course is designed for teachers of Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. It
aims at further improving their Mandarin Chinese skills in understanding the phonetics,
morphology, and syntax in Chinese.
Specifically in this course, you will explore the following aspects of the Chinese
classroom through reading, lecture, reflection, class discussion, demonstration, presentation,
and professional conferences:
a. Chinese phonetics: pinyin, syllables, intonations, rhythm, etc.
b. Morphology: forming of Chinese characters, original and simplified characters
c. Syntax (grammar): Parts of speech of Chinese words, word order, sentence
structures, and patterns.

COURSE REQUIREMENT
A. Attendance: No more than two absences will be excused. You are responsible for
making up all the readings and dialogues journals, and for getting the notes for the
class which you have missed. So be sure to get the phone number of at least
one classmate.
B. Readings: All the required readings must be done before coming to class and you should
be ready to respond to questions and participate in discussions on the readings.
C. Participation: Your meaningful and productive participation means a great deal to this
class. Joining class discussion and working in small groups are both part of class
participation.
D. School visit and class observation: All students must visit and observe Chinese classes at
least twice. Write an observation report on each visit.
