Work Zone Safety & Traffic Control
Who should attend
Maintenance supervisors and engineers, members of maintenance and construction crews, and anyone
involved with work zone traffic control, such as utility employees.
Description
Improve worker and motorist safety through learning the proper use of traffic control devices during road
maintenance operations. Find out how to use specific types of traffic control devices and how to plan, set up
and maintain a work zone. The workshop brings to light the hazards that field workers face every day in
construction zones. Class members experience hands-on use of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
Devices (MUTCD).
Subjects covered: general terms and procedures; traffic control devices; flagging; traffic control zones; set up
of traffic control zones and how to read and interpret work zone plans; and liability issues.
Work Zone Safety & Traffic Control is a required course of the Road Scholar Program
Instructor
Todd Morrison has been a technology transfer engineer with the Technology Transfer Program, Kentucky
Transportation Center, at the University of Kentucky for the past six years, and served two years as Kentucky’s
Safety Circuit Rider. Todd retired as a transportation engineering supervisor for the Project Delivery and
Preservation Division with the Kentucky Department of Highways, District Three, after 19 years of service.
Todd has worked with environmental, work zone, construction and maintenance concerns as an environmental
coordinator, maintenance/traffic engineer, resident/construction engineer, and as a branch manager for
operations.
