“And Crown Thy Good: Varian Fry in Marseilles”
A documentary work-in-progress by Pierre Sauvage
(Varian Fry Institute, 2013)
Pierre Sauvage captivated the audience at the 2004 Fred
Marcus Memorial Holocaust Lecture with his awardwinning documentary “Weapons of the Spirit,” about
the residents of the French town of LeChambon who
rescued him and his family, along with 5,000 other Jews.
Sauvage, who is also the president and founder of the
Chambon Foundation/Varian Fry Institute, is currently
focusing on the underexplored American experience
of the Holocaust. He will preview and discuss “And Crown Thy Good:
Varian Fry in Marseille,” his fascinating, soon-to-be-released film about a
courageous and little-known rescuer.

About Fred Marcus (5/16/24-6/25/02)
Fred Marcus, for whom this annual Holocaust lecture
series is named, was born in Berlin and spent the war years
in Shanghai, China as a refugee from Nazi Germany. A
nationally known Jewish educator, he was a member of the
Speakers Bureau of the Holocaust Awareness Institute and
gave frequent talks about the Holocaust to school classes,
organizations, as well as church and synagogue groups. For
more information about Fred and Jews in Shanghai, visit
www.survivalinshanghai.com.
Bring Your Gently Worn Shoes to the Lecture
We are again collecting gently worn shoes at the lecture as a reminder of
the shoes left behind in concentration camps by victims of the Holocaust.
This year, shoes will be donated to Soles4Souls, a national organization that
provides shoes to needy individuals and supports micro-business efforts
to relieve poverty in the U.S. and around the world. Please help with this
worthwhile effort.
