Internships are renewable at the end of the contracted time period. The student is hired and paid by the university while working for the host organization. The host organization funds the position for the agreed-upon term of employment at the beginning of the internship. Administrative overhead fees are calculated into the contract. Option B | Purchase Order The host organization completes a purchase order with DU and the student is hired by the university. The university submits monthly invoices to the host organization, charging for the student’s time along with administrative fees, though at a lower rate than the contract option. This plan does not involve any contractual agreement between the host and DU and is operated on a month-by-month basis. DU provides an on-campus supervisor to administer the student’s academic credit, to liaise with the host organization, and to provide advising to the student and on-site supervisor. Unpaid internships are available in certain cases. Please contact us for details. To learn more about the graduate certificate, please visit universitycollege.du.edu. University of Denver Department of Geography Student Internship Program Hire an Intern! Students at the University of Denver gain valuable experience when they enhance their classroom education by working in real-world environments. This experience is possible because of you. DU is always open to new internship possibilities and we thank you for your interest in providing these valuable opportunities to students interested in pursuing a challenge outside of traditional education. All subfields of geography lend themselves to internship possibilities including geographic information sciences (GIS), remote sensing, cartography, conservation, restoration, environmental education, environmental sciences, geomorphology, natural resource management, transportation, and urban planning. Academic Credit We offer our students the option of earning academic credit for their internship work. The student must have an on-site supervisor who will submit an evaluation of the student’s work to the DU Department of Geography internship program director at the end of each ten-week academic quarter. Pay Structure Because of administrative costs, overhead charges are applied to the two payment methods in which students are officially employed by DU. See below for more information on pay structures. For contract positions the charges are based on the type of host organization and location (on or off campus). Overhead costs for purchase orders are the same for all institution types and locations. Sample Student Salaries/Host Organization Costs Below is a chart outlining the sample student salaries and associated total costs to the host organization—this includes salary plus overhead charges. For example, if a for-profit company in the private sector offers an internship off campus and selects the contract option, an hourly wage of $13.00 for the student will cost $17.60 per hour payable to DU. Please note that student's hourly wage is not limited to $18.00. Contracts Student’s Hourly Wage Total Payable to DU/Hour $10 $11 $12 University of Denver The University of Denver offers BA, MA, and Ph.D. degrees in geography, BA and BS degrees in environmental sciences, and graduate certificates and MS degrees in GIS. Students may tailor their degree program to suit their interests by selecting courses emphasizing physical geography and environment, human geography, and geographic information science. DU recognizes the increasing importance of GIS and the need to integrate advanced study in geographic information systems, remote sensing, and global positioning systems with traditional studies in human, cultural, and physical geography. $13 $14 $15 $16 $17 $18 $14.96 $16.46 $17.95 $19.45 $20.95 $22.44 $23.94 $25.43 $26.93 US Government or NonProfit, On Campus Work $12.79 $14.07 $15.35 $16.63 $17.90 $19.18 $20.46 $21.74 $23.02 US Government or NonProfit, Off Campus Work Private Industry, Off Campus Work Private Industry, On Campus Work $13.54 $14.89 $16.25 $17.60 $18.96 $20.31 $21.66 $23.02 $24.37 $15.71 $17.28 $18.85 $20.43 $22.00 $23.57 $25.14 $26.71 $28.28 Purchase Orders $11.37 $12.51 $13.64 $14.78 $15.92 $17.06 $18.19 $18.33 Total Payable to DU/Hour $10 Student’s Hourly Wage $11 $12 $13 $14 $15 $16 $17 $18 $20.47 gis internship_Layout 1 7/18/2012 4:24 PM Page 2
