A Message from the
Title III Director…
Greetings and welcome to the third edition of the Title
III quarterly newsletter in this grant cycle. The Title III
newsletter gives us the opportunity not only to provide articles
of interest on the different activities funded by Title III, but
to help keep the campus informed on the different
accomplishments the activities are achieving throughout the
year. There are a number of exciting things happening in Title
III that we want to share with you.
In this edition we introduce a new addition to the Title
III family, highlight the STEM 360 Summer Enrichment Camp,
and inform the campus community on the Center for Academic
Success tutorial center services and hours.
We hope you find Title III’s newsletter interesting and
informative. Keep an eye out for more Title III news.
We would like to
welcome one new employee
to the Title III family and
introduce the NEW
Technology Instructor to the
campus community.
Mr. Francisco Duque
started June 17th with the
Center for Academic Success
Activity as an Academic
Advisor (Hispanic Outreach).
Dedra N. Andrews
Title III Director
Mrs. Naomi Singleton
started June 1st as the
Technology Instructor with the
Integrated Communications
Technologies Activity. In
addition, Mrs. Singleton will
also maintain another role as
Systems Analyst for Computer
Services.
We know that both
individuals will be a great
asset to our Title III team.
The “Center for Academic
Success” (Dr. April Gentry) activity
offers tutorial services to all students in
the Tutorial Center located in Whiting
Hall at Savannah State University.
The Center has over 20 student
peer tutors, who maintains a 3.0 or
higher GPA and provide one-on-one
and group tutoring/sessions in core
curriculum courses such as but not
limited to:
- College Algebra
- Biology
- Chemistry
- English
- Spanish
The peer tutors also provide
services in upper level and specialized
areas such as but not limited to:
- Accounting
- Business Statistics
- Genetics
- Calculus
This fall the Tutorial Center will
introduce SYPE as an alternative for
tutoring sessions for those students who
are unable to partake in the tutoring
services during office hours.
The center will setup webcams
and SKPE accounts for student use.

The “Sponsored Research and Scholarly” activity (Linda Meier)
wants to inform all faculty of the travel awards that are
available for SSU faculty in the amount of $1,000. The travel
awards are for faculty with an interest in research and grant
writing. Awarded faculty will be provided with professional
development in research, training in grant writing and grant
management, mentoring, and technical support through
workshops held by the Sponsored Research office.

The Summer Enrichment Camp
hosted by the “STEM 360” activity
(Patrick Dean) was coordinated for rising
sixth graders planning to attend the new
STEM Academy in the SavannahChatham County School System. The
Enrichment Camp was held July 8th – 19th
on SSU campus and had over 60
participants who were engaged in Marine
and Forensic Science classes,
engineering design, construction, and
performance activities.
This year’s activities included:
Water Rockets
 Mousetrap Car
 Balsa Wood Bridge
 Finger and Foot Casting-Forensic
Science
 Sample collection from Marsh-Marine
Science
Each participant was able to have a
hands-on experience with each activity
which will enhance their skills in problem
solving, studying, researching, writing,
and communicating with their peers.


Title III in Arlington Virginia
The annual Title III Technical Assistance Workshop was held in Arlington, Virginia at
the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel (June 17th-21st). Attending the Technical
Assistance Workshop allows Title III Administrators and staff to gain practical
instruction to strengthening their knowledge of grants management responsibilities,
regulations, and policies as it pertains to managing the overall Title III grant. This
year’s workshop invited Management Concepts to facilitate training for Title III
Administrators to gain updates on federal rules and regulations.
The “Organizational Training &
Development” (Dr. Sandra Best),
wants to inform the campus of the new
Skillsoft online training resources that
are scheduled to be offered January
2014. The Skillsoft online training is a
resource that will allow job specific
skill enhancement options as well as
preparation for certification in
technical, business, and desktop
skills.
The Skillsoft curriculum
includes courses in (but not limited to):
Business
Desktop Applications
IT/Networking
Professional Certification
Implementation of Skillsoft
e-learning and performance
support training will provide
access to the most up-to-date
training materials and a wide
variety of published works.





Budget

All Activity Directors should be keeping track of their money spent throughout the year. By the
end of August, at least 90% of activity funds should have been spent or encumbered.
Requests

All Title III travel requests should be received in the Title III office 10 days prior to the travel date.

Student workers cannot be hired without prior approval from Title III. All student contracts should
be submitted 10 days prior to the start date.
Title III Office

PHASE II Data for Year 2 and Year 4 (SAFRA) funding was submitted to the Department of
Education on July 22nd.

End of Year Reports (Oct. 2012—September 2013) are due to the Title III Office Friday, October
11th. Updated Equipment Inventory Reports are to be submitted as well.
Title III 2013-2014 Funding
Awarded $2,908,647 for Year 2 Title III B Grant
Awarded $1,048,561 for Year 4 SAFRA Grant
“New Funding” for both grants starts on October 1, 2013
Cut-off date for Title III spending is set for Friday, September 13th.
Activity funds must be spent or encumbered by this date. The Title III
Office will start the close-out process for Year 1 and SAFRA Year 3 on
September 16th.
