Jim Toman
Jim Toman is in his sixth year at Liberty
after posting the highest NCAA Division
I winning percentage (.633) during his
first five years in Lynchburg of any head
baseball coach in program history.
With a 41-19 record last season, Toman’s Flames have now posted the
school’s top two single-season win totals
in program history. The 2010 Flames set
the school record for wins with a 43-18
campaign.
The Flames have notched a 187-108-1
overall record during his five seasons on
Liberty Mountain and have also posted
an 82-43 Big South mark over the span.
Along with their second 40-plus win
season in 2012, the Flames set school
records for team ERA (3.04) and
shutouts (11).
Toman saw seven players from his
Flames squad selected during the 2011
Major League Baseball Draft, the most
players chosen in a single draft in the
39-year history of the program. The
number ties the 2007 and 2010 Coastal
Carolina squads for the Big South Conference record for players picked in a
single draft.
The impressive strides made by the
program have not gone unnoticed. In
December, Rivals.com selected Toman
as one of 10 Collegiate Head Coaches
on the Rise, while in November of 2010,
Rivals cited Liberty as one of college
baseball’s top 10 rising programs.
Toman was named the sixth head
coach in the history of the Liberty
Baseball program in June 2007, after
11 seasons as the senior member of
Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South
Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18
years alongside Tanner, dating back to
the 1990 season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and
coached the catchers. Known as one
of the top recruiters in college baseball,
the 22-year college coaching veteran
was named the 2002 Baseball America/
American Baseball Coaches Association
Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman
served under Tanner for seven years at
N.C. State.
A native of Monroeville, Pa., Toman
and his wife Ashley live in Forest, Va.
They have three children - Caroline (15),
Charlie Mac (12), and Tucker (9).
Big South Baseball Championship, 5/21-25
Tracking Liberty
• The Flames closed out their 2013 regular season by taking their Big South series with Radford at Liberty Baseball Stadium, two games to one, 5/16-18. Liberty took the final two games
to take the series.
• The Flames finished 13-11 in the Big South Conference, claiming the No. 5 seed for the
2013 Big South Baseball Championship. The double-elimination tournament will be held at
Liberty Baseball Stadium.
• In its first season at Liberty Baseball Stadium, the Flames finished 20-8.
• This past Saturday, OF Justin Sizemore doubled with two outs, driving in two runs for a 2-1
victory. Sizemore had two hits in the game.
• LHP Jared Lyons moved to 3-0 with two innings of scoreless relief, Saturday.
• Pitching for the last time in the regular season in a Liberty uniform, senior RHP Brooks Roy
allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings in Liberty’s 3-1 win, on Senior Day, Friday. The win was his team-leading seventh victory.
• OF/RHP Ashton Perritt closed out Friday’s contest with two scoreless innings to earn his fifth
save of the year. He started the game in left field, collecting two hits and scoring two runs.
• In Thursday night’s 6-3 setback, CF Ryan Cordell and C Trey Wimmer had three hits apiece
in the game. Cordell also had an RBI and stole two bases in the game. It was his team-leading 22nd multi-hit contest.

• LHP Blake Fulghum pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out a career-high eight, Thursday.
• Over the last 10 games, DH/1B Danny Grauer has hit .414 to raise his batting average over
.300. He enters this week with a .301 average for the year.

• Seniors INF Bryan Aanderud, RHP Patrick Bankemper, RHP Justin Gunn, RHP Brooks Roy,
OF/1B Justin Sizemore, 3B Dalton Sype, C Trey Wimmer and RHP Cody Young are playing in
their final games in a Liberty uniform. They were recognized before last Friday’s game.
• CF Ryan Cordell and C Trey Wimmer had three hits apiece against Radford, Thursday.
• OF Cordell also had an RBI and stole two bases in the game. It was his team-leading 22nd
multi-hit contest.
• The OF went 4-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt at Campbell, 5/12. Cordell’s four-hit game was his
first this season and the third of his career. He also scored twice and knocked in a run.
• Cordell enters the week tied for second in the Big South with 19 two-out RBIs. He is also
among the conference leaders in RBIs (Tied-6th), runs scored (Tied 9th), home runs (Tied6th), total bases (Tied-7th) and stolen bases (2nd). He leads the Flames in runs scored and
stolen bases.
• C Trey Wimmer was a member of the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, the Greater Wichita
Area Sports Commission announced on 4/9. The award goes to the nation’s top catcher.
• This past Saturday, OF Justin Sizemore doubled with two outs, driving in two runs for a 2-1
victory. Sizemore had two hits in the game.
• Sizemore has posted two hits in a contest in three out of his four starts.
• OF/RHP Ashton Perritt closed out this past Friday’s contest with two scoreless innings to
earn his fifth save of the year. He started the game in left field, collecting two hits and scoring
two runs.
• Perritt collected three hits, scored a run, and stole a base for the second straight game, last
Tuesday night at James Madison.
• In 29 starts in the outfield this season, he has posted 14 multi-hit contests. He has 15 total
multi-hit games.
• Over the last 10 games, DH/1B Danny Grauer has hit .414 to raise his batting average over
.300. He enters this week with a .301 average for the year.
• Grauer leads the Flames with seven home runs, 40 RBIs and a .519 slugging pct. He is
among the Big South leaders in RBIs (Tied-4th), home runs (Tied - 3rd), slugging pct. (3rd)
and two-out RBIs (Tied-2nd).
• 2B Bryan Aanderud posted a career-high consecutive game hit streak of 16 games, 4/7-27.
The hit streak is the longest by a Flame this season.
• Aanderud is among the leaders in the Big South Conference in hits (6th).
• RHP Josh Richardson had his consecutive scoreless inning streak snapped at 24 at Campbell, 5/10
• Only moved into the starting rotation recently, Richardson leads the Flames with 20
appearances this season.
• Against Radford, LHP Blake Fulghum pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out a careerhigh eight, this past Thursday, while LHP Jared Lyons moved to 3-0 with a win, Saturday.

Flames Against The Championship Field
• Liberty enters the Big South Baseball Championship having compiled a 214-159-1 overall
record against the members of the 2012 Big South Championship field, including a 22-18 mark
in the Big South Baseball Championship.
• Liberty’s most frequent opponent in the tournament has been Coastal Carolina, with the
Chanticleers holding a 12-5 edge over the Flames in meetings during the championship.
Winthrop has been Liberty’s second most common opponent at the tournament. The Flames
hold an 8-6 advantage during the tournament against the Eagles.
• Liberty is in Bracket Two for the tournament, which includes Campbell, Charleston Southern
and Radford. The Flames are 10-4 against the members of the bracket in Big South
tournament play.
• A new member of the Big South, Liberty has never played Longwood at the championship

Liberty Baseball Stadium - the New Home of Flames Baseball
• The Flames posted a 20-8 mark in their first season at the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
• When completed in June, the stadium will have 2,500 chairback seats, a turf playing field, a
operations center for the baseball program and a fully functional press area.
• After 34 years of playing at Worthington Stadium, the Flames christened the new facility, with a
three-game sweep of Penn State, Feb. 23-24 and went on to win their first seven games at the

A Look Back at Radford
• The Flames closed out their 2013 regular season by taking their Big South series with Radford
at Liberty Baseball Stadium, two games to one, 5/16-18. Liberty took the final two games to
take the series.
• On Saturday, OF Justin Sizemore doubled with two outs,driving in two runs for a 2-1 victory.
Sizemore, a senior, had two hits in his final regular season game in a Flames’ uniform.
• LHP Jared Lyons moved to 3-0 with two innings of scoreless relief, Saturday.
• Pitching for the last time in the regular season in a Liberty uniform, senior RHP Brooks Roy
allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings in Liberty’s 3-1 win, on Senior Day, Friday.
• OF/RHP Ashton Perritt closed out Friday’s contest with two scoreless innings to earn his fifth
save of the year. He started the game in left field, collecting two hits and scoring two runs.
• Before the game on Friday, the eight seniors on Liberty’s roster were honored. Besides Roy,
2B Bryan Aanderud, OF Justin Sizemore, 3B Dalton Sype, C Trey Wimmer and RHPs Patrick
Bankemper, Justin Gunn and Kody Young were recognized. All eight are playing in their final
regular season games in a Flames’ uniform during the weekend.
• In Thursday night’s 6-3 setback, CF Ryan Cordell and Wimmer had three hits apiece in the
game. Cordell also had an RBI and stole two bases in the game. It was his team-leading 22nd
multi-hit contest.
• Liberty rallied for two runs in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, Thursday.
• LHP Blake Fulghum pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out a career-high eight, Thursday.

• Liberty swept a three-game Big South series at VMI, 4/26-27, the Flames’ first road
weekend sweep since taking three at Presbyterian College last season (March 16-18).
Grauer Breaks Out
• Over the last 10 games, DH/1B Danny Grauer has hit .414 to raise his batting average
over .300. He enters this week with a .301 average for the year.
• The junior has also posted a .550 on base percentage during the span, as he also
walked eight times over the span.
• He has also posted an .690 slugging percentage.
• On 4/27, Grauer went 3-for-3 with six RBIs and four runs scored in game two of a
doubleheader at VMI to start the stretch. All three of his hits were for extra bases, as the
Liberty designated hitter connected for a grand slam, a two-run home run and a double.
Both his RBI and runs scored totals were career highs.
• He leads the Flames with seven home runs and is third in the Big South Conference.

• 2B Bryan Aanderud has continued to be a consistent presence in the Liberty lineup,
this season.
• Since joining the Liberty roster last season from Cypress CC, the senior has started
every game at second base and has been among the team leaders in batting average,
hits and RBIs.
• 2B Bryan Aanderud posted a career-high consecutive game hit streak of 16 games,
4/7-27. The hit streak is the longest by a Flame this season.
• During the streak, the senior hit .404 and had a .446 on base percentage. The 2B
raised his batting average 27 points over the span.
• Aanderud enters the week, leading the Flames in batting average and is third in RBIs.
He is also second on the team with 21 multi-hit games.
• Last year, he lead Liberty in both batting average and RBIs. He also collected the
most multiple-hit (26) and multiple-RBI (15) games of any Flame.
• Aanderud enters the week sixth in the Big South with 69 hits.
The Captain, Trey Wimmer, Goes Out in Style
• Two-time team captain Trey Wimmer is finishing his Liberty career with his best season.
• The senior was a member of the Johnny Bench Award Watch List. The award honors
