With a 41-19 record last season, Toman’s Flames have now posted the school’s top two single-season win totals in program history. The 2010 Flames set the school record for wins with a 43-18 campaign. The Flames have notched a 187-108-1 overall record during his five seasons on Liberty Mountain and have also posted an 82-43 Big South mark over the span. Along with their second 40-plus win season in 2012, the Flames set school records for team ERA (3.04) and shutouts (11). Toman saw seven players from his Flames squad selected during the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, the most players chosen in a single draft in the 39-year history of the program. The number ties the 2007 and 2010 Coastal Carolina squads for the Big South Conference record for players picked in a single draft. The impressive strides made by the program have not gone unnoticed. In December, Rivals.com selected Toman as one of 10 Collegiate Head Coaches on the Rise, while in November of 2010, Rivals cited Liberty as one of college baseball’s top 10 rising programs. Toman was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Liberty Baseball program in June 2007, after 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990 season at N.C. State. During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and coached the catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 22-year college coaching veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/ American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman served under Tanner for seven years at N.C. State. A native of Monroeville, Pa., Toman and his wife Ashley live in Forest, Va. They have three children - Caroline (15), Charlie Mac (12), and Tucker (9). Big South Baseball Championship, 5/21-25 Tracking Liberty • The Flames closed out their 2013 regular season by taking their Big South series with Radford at Liberty Baseball Stadium, two games to one, 5/16-18. Liberty took the final two games to take the series. • The Flames finished 13-11 in the Big South Conference, claiming the No. 5 seed for the 2013 Big South Baseball Championship. The double-elimination tournament will be held at Liberty Baseball Stadium. • In its first season at Liberty Baseball Stadium, the Flames finished 20-8. • This past Saturday, OF Justin Sizemore doubled with two outs, driving in two runs for a 2-1 victory. Sizemore had two hits in the game. • LHP Jared Lyons moved to 3-0 with two innings of scoreless relief, Saturday. • Pitching for the last time in the regular season in a Liberty uniform, senior RHP Brooks Roy allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings in Liberty’s 3-1 win, on Senior Day, Friday. Liberty took the final two games to take the series. • On Saturday, OF Justin Sizemore doubled with two outs,driving in two runs for a 2-1 victory. Sizemore, a senior, had two hits in his final regular season game in a Flames’ uniform. • LHP Jared Lyons moved to 3-0 with two innings of scoreless relief, Saturday. • Pitching for the last time in the regular season in a Liberty uniform, senior RHP Brooks Roy allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings in Liberty’s 3-1 win, on Senior Day, Friday. • OF/RHP Ashton Perritt closed out Friday’s contest with two scoreless innings to earn his fifth save of the year. He started the game in left field, collecting two hits and scoring two runs. • Before the game on Friday, the eight seniors on Liberty’s roster were honored. Besides Roy, 2B Bryan Aanderud, OF Justin Sizemore, 3B Dalton Sype, C Trey Wimmer and RHPs Patrick Bankemper, Justin Gunn and Kody Young were recognized. All eight are playing in their final regular season games in a Flames’ uniform during the weekend. • In Thursday night’s 6-3 setback, CF Ryan Cordell and Wimmer had three hits apiece in the game. Cordell also had an RBI and stole two bases in the game. Grauer Breaks Out • Over the last 10 games, DH/1B Danny Grauer has hit .414 to raise his batting average over .300. He enters this week with a .301 average for the year. • The junior has also posted a .550 on base percentage during the span, as he also walked eight times over the span. • He has also posted an .690 slugging percentage. • On 4/27, Grauer went 3-for-3 with six RBIs and four runs scored in game two of a doubleheader at VMI to start the stretch. All three of his hits were for extra bases, as the Liberty designated hitter connected for a grand slam, a two-run home run and a double. Both his RBI and runs scored totals were career highs. • He leads the Flames with seven home runs and is third in the Big South Conference. The hit streak is the longest by a Flame this season. • During the streak, the senior hit .404 and had a .446 on base percentage. The 2B raised his batting average 27 points over the span. • Aanderud enters the week, leading the Flames in batting average and is third in RBIs. He is also second on the team with 21 multi-hit games. • Last year, he lead Liberty in both batting average and RBIs. He also collected the most multiple-hit (26) and multiple-RBI (15) games of any Flame. • Aanderud enters the week sixth in the Big South with 69 hits.
