Jim Toman enters his sixth year at
Liberty after posting the highest NCAA
Division I winning percentage (.633)
during his first five years in Lynchburg
of any head baseball coach in program
history.
With a 41-19 record last season, Toman’s Flames have now posted the
school’s top two single-season win totals
in program history. The 2010 Flames set
the school record for wins with a 43-18
campaign.
The Flames have notched a 187-108-1
overall record during his five seasons on
Liberty Mountain and have also posted
an 82-43 Big South mark over the span.
Along with their second 40-plus win
season in 2012, the Flames set school
records for team ERA (3.04) and
shutouts (11).
Toman saw seven players from his
Flames squad selected during the 2011
Major League Baseball Draft, the most
players chosen in a single draft in the
39-year history of the program. The
number ties the 2007 and 2010 Coastal
Carolina squads for the Big South Conference record for players picked in a
single draft.
The impressive strides made by the
program have not gone unnoticed. In
December, Rivals.com selected Toman
as one of 10 Collegiate Head Coaches
on the Rise, while in November of 2010,
Rivals cited Liberty as one of college
baseball’s top 10 rising programs.
Toman was named the sixth head
coach in the history of the Liberty
Baseball program in June 2007, after
11 seasons as the senior member of
Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South
Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18
years alongside Tanner, dating back to
the 1990 season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and
coached the catchers. Known as one
of the top recruiters in college baseball,
the 22-year college coaching veteran
was named the 2002 Baseball America/
American Baseball Coaches Association
Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman
served under Tanner for seven years at
N.C. State.
A native of Monroeville, Pa., Toman
and his wife Ashley live in Forest, Va.
They have three children - Caroline (15),
Charlie Mac (12), and Tucker (9).

• Liberty split a pair of games during the midweek. The Flames defeated William & Mary, 6-2,
Tuesday, while falling at No. 12 Virginia, 7-2, Wednesday.
• 2B Bryan Aanderud posted back-to-back three-hit games this past week. Aanderud had
three hits apiece in wins over Georgia on Sunday and William & Mary on Tuesday.
• C Trey Wimmer is currently on a five-game hitting streak. He had collected two hits in each
of the past four games.
• LHP Blake Fulghum recorded the win in his first start as a Flame, Tuesday night at William &
Mary. In 6 2/3 innings, Fulghum scattered 10 hits and allowed two runs.
• RHP Josh Richardson earned his second save of the year with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of
relief, Tuesday
• LF Nick Lasik has hit .414 over the last 10 games.
• The Flames had season-high 16 hits in their victory over Georgia, last Sunday.
• RHP Trey Lambert pitched seven scoreless innings this past Sunday, before having his
14-inning scoreless streak halted in the eighth at Georgia. Lambert is 3-0 on the season.
• RHP Brooks Roy gave the Flames another strong outing this past Saturday. Despite picking
up his first loss, Roy (2-1) retired Georgia in order in five out of the eight innings he worked.
He retired seven or more batters in a row on two different occasions during the game.
Player Quick Hits
• 2B Bryan Aanderud posted back-to-back had three-hit games this past week. Aanderud had
three hits apiece in wins over Georgia on Sunday and William & Mary on Tuesday.
• Tuesday, Aanderud drove in a personal season-high three runs.
• Aanderud has hit .368 over his last 10 games.
• C Trey Wimmer is currently on a five-game hitting streak. He had collected two hits in each
of the past four games.
• The senior has thrown out 60% of baserunners trying to steal this season.
• Wimmer was selected the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 18-24. He
went 6-for-9 (.667) during Liberty’s three-game series against Penn State, 2/24-25. Five of his
six hits went for extra bases, three doubles and two triples, for a 1.444 slugging percentage.
He drove in a team-high six runs.
• OF Ryan Cordell leads the Flames with 18 RBIs.
• The junior was named the Big South Conference Baseball Player of the Week for games
played during the opening week of the 2013 season. He hit .462, posting six hits and a teamhigh five RBIs against No. 5 South Carolina during a three-game series, 2/15-17. The OF had
multiple hits in all three games and highlighted the series with a pair of hits and three RBIs in
game one of Sunday’s doubleheader, 2/17
• OF Nick Lacik had his first three-hit game as a Flame this past Sunday. He also had three
RBIs. It was the first time this season, the OF served, as Liberty’s leadoff hitter.
• Lacik has hit .414 over his last 10 games.
• 3B Dalton Sype recorded his second three-hit game of the season in Liberty’s win at Georgia, this past Sunday.
• OF Nick Paxton leads the Flames with 16 runs scored.
• He became the first Flame to hit for the cycle since 2006 on 3/1. His home run was the first
by any player at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
• SS Dalton Britt has started every game at shortstop this season.
• During the Flames’ four games in the Liberty Invitational, Paxton hit .500 and scored five
runs, 3/1-3.
• 1B Alex Close had his eight-game hitting streak snapped at Virginia, Wednesday.
• LHP Blake Fulghum recorded the win in his first start as a Flame, Tuesday night at William &
Mary. In 6 2/3 innings, Fulghum scattered 10 hits and allowed two runs.
• RHP Josh Richardson earned his second save of the season with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of

• After 34 years of playing at Worthington Stadium, the Flames christened a new facility on Feb.
23-24, the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
• Liberty opened the stadium with a three-game sweep of Penn State, Feb. 2/23-24 and went
on to win their first seven games at the facility.
• When completed in June, the stadium will have 2,500 chairback seats, a turf playing field, a
operations center for the baseball program and a fully functional press area.

A Look Back at Midweek Games at William & Mary and No. 12 Virginia
• Liberty split a pair of games during the midweek. The Flames defeated William & Mary, 6-2,
Tuesday, while falling at No. 12 Virginia, 7-2, Wednesday.
• 2B Bryan Aanderud posted back-to-back three hit games this past week. Aanderud had three
hits apiece in wins over Georgia on Sunday and William & Mary on Tuesday.
• Aanderud also drove in a personal season-high of three runs in the win over William & Mary.
• LHP Blake Fulghum recorded the win in his first start as a Flame, Tuesday night at William &
Mary. In 6 2/3 innings, Fulghum scattered 10 hits and allowed two runs, one earned.
• Liberty won for the second time this season when being outhit by its opponent, Tuesday. The
Flames were outhit, 14-10, by the Tribe. Penn State outhit Liberty, 9-6, in a 4-1 loss to the
Flames, Feb. 23.
• C Trey Wimmer had two hits apiece in Tuesday and Wednesday’s contests. Wimmer has
collected two hits in each of the last four games.
• While Liberty pitchers Fulghum and Josh Richardson did not walk anyone at William & Mary
on Tuesday, seven Flame pitchers walked 11 batters at Virginia, Wednesday.

A Look Back at Georgia Series
• Liberty snapped a three-game losing skid with an 11-8 win over Georgia, this past
Sunday.
• The Flames had season-high 16 hits in their victory over Georgia, Sunday.
• LF Nick Lacik, 2B Bryan Aanderud and 3B Dalton Sype each had three hits for Liberty
in their win on Sunday.
• RHP Trey Lambert pitched seven scoreless innings on Sunday, before having his
14-inning scoreless streak halted in the eighth frame. Lambert is 3-0 on the season.
• RHP Brooks Roy gave the Flames another strong outing Saturday. Despite picking up
his first loss of the year, Roy (2-1) retired the Bulldogs in order in five out of the eight
innings he worked. He retired seven or more Georgia batters in a row on two different
occasions during the game.
• Although OF Ryan Cordell had his consecutive game hit streak stopped at 12 on
Friday night, the junior hit his second home run of the season Saturday and has hit in 13
out of Liberty’s 15 games.
• 1B Alex Close had a hit in each game of the three-game series. He hit a team-high
.385 for the series. The 1B has had at least one hit in seven consecutive games.
Toman Closes in on 200
• Liberty Flames head coach Jim Toman is two wins away from his milestone 200th victory.
• Toman will become only the second of the six coaches in program history to reach the
milestone. Liberty’s first head coach Al Worthington is the other, having posted 343 wins
during 13 seasons.
• Toman has posted the highest NCAA Division I winning percentage (.633) during his
first five years in Lynchburg of any head baseball coach in program history.
• The Flames have posted the top two season win totals in program history during Toman’s tenure, posting a school record with 43 victories in 2010 and 41 victories in 2012
Wimmer Selected as Big South Player of the Week for 2/18-24
• Liberty catcher Trey Wimmer was named the Big South Conference Baseball Player of
the Week for games played Feb. 18-24.
• The senior hit .667 (6-for-9) with six RBI, three doubles and two triples in leading the
Flames to a three-game sweep of Penn State.
• Wimmer notched a 1.444 slugging percentage and recorded an on-base percentage of
.600. He threw out the only runner attempting to steal a base in the series.
• The honor marks his first Big South Player of the Week nod for his career.
Cordell Named Big South Player of the Week
• Liberty outfielder Ryan Cordell was named the Big South Conference Baseball Player
of the Week for games played during the opening week of the 2013 season.
• Cordell hit .462, posting six hits and a team-high five RBIs against No. 5 South Carolina. The OF had multiple hits in all three games.
• The CF notched extra base hits in all three contests and ripped a triple in the series
finale to lead the Flames to a 3-2 win. In the three-game span, he had a .760 slugging
percentage.
• It is the second Big South Player of the Week award for Cordell during his career. Last
season, the outfielder was named Co-Player of the Week for games played April 10-17.
