Jim Toman enters his sixth year at
Liberty after posting the highest NCAA
Division I winning percentage (.633)
during his first five years in Lynchburg
of any head baseball coach in program
history.
With a 41-19 record last season, Toman’s Flames have now posted the
school’s top two single-season win totals
in program history. The 2010 Flames set
the school record for wins with a 43-18
campaign.
The Flames have notched a 187-108-1
overall record during his five seasons on
Liberty Mountain and have also posted
an 82-43 Big South mark over the span.
Along with their second 40-plus win
season in 2012, the Flames set school
records for team ERA (3.04) and
shutouts (11).
Toman saw seven players from his
Flames squad selected during the 2011
Major League Baseball Draft, the most
players chosen in a single draft in the
39-year history of the program. The
number ties the 2007 and 2010 Coastal
Carolina squads for the Big South Conference record for players picked in a
single draft.
The impressive strides made by the
program have not gone unnoticed. In
December, Rivals.com selected Toman
as one of 10 Collegiate Head Coaches
on the Rise, while in November of 2010,
Rivals cited Liberty as one of college
baseball’s top 10 rising programs.
Toman was named the sixth head
coach in the history of the Liberty
Baseball program in June 2007, after
11 seasons as the senior member of
Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South
Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18
years alongside Tanner, dating back to
the 1990 season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and
coached the catchers. Known as one
of the top recruiters in college baseball,
the 22-year college coaching veteran
was named the 2002 Baseball America/
American Baseball Coaches Association
Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman
served under Tanner for seven years at
N.C. State.
A native of Monroeville, Pa., Toman
and his wife Ashley live in Forest, Va.
They have three children - Caroline (15),
Charlie Mac (12), and Tucker (9).

• Liberty snapped a three-game losing skid with an 11-8 win over Georgia, Sunday.
• The Flames had season-high 16 hits in their victory over Georgia.
• LF Nick Lacik, 2B Bryan Aanderud and 3B Dalton Sype each had three hits for Liberty in
their win on Sunday.
• RHP Trey Lambert pitched seven scoreless innings on Sunday, before having his 14-inning
scoreless streak halted in the eighth at Georgia. Lambert is 3-0 on the season.
• RHP Brooks Roy gave the Flames another strong outing Saturday. Despite picking up his
first loss of the year, Roy (2-1) retired the Bulldogs in order in five out of the eight innings he
worked. He retired seven or more Georgia batters in a row on two different occasions during
the game.
• Although OF Ryan Cordell had his consecutive game hit streak stopped at 12 on Friday
night, the junior hit his second home run of the season Saturday and has hit in 13 out of
Liberty’s 15 games.
• The Flames had their nine-game winning streak snapped in a 5-3 loss to William & Mary this
past Tuesday. The streak tied the program record for consecutive wins at the NCAA Division I
level. The mark has been reached in seven different seasons.
Player Quick Hits
• Although OF Ryan Cordell had his consecutive game hit streak stopped at 12 on Friday night,
the junior hit his second home run of the season Saturday and has hit in 13 out of
Liberty’s 15 games.
• Cordell leads the Flames with 18 RBIs.
• The junior was named the Big South Conference Baseball Player of the Week for games
played during the opening week of the 2013 season. He hit .462, posting six hits and a teamhigh five RBIs against No. 5 South Carolina during a three-game series, 2/15-17. The OF had
multiple hits in all three games and highlighted the series with a pair of hits and three RBIs in
game one of Sunday’s doubleheader, 2/17
• 2B Bryan Aanderud had three hits in Liberty’s 11-8 win over Georgia, Sunday. It was his
second three-hit game of the year.
• Aanderud has hit .412 over his last 10 games.
• OF Nick Lacik had his first three-hit game as a Flame on Sunday. He also had three RBIs.
It was the first time this season, the OF served, as Liberty’s leadoff hitter.
• Lacik hit .585 in four games during the Liberty Invitational, 3/1-3. He scored four times and
was 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts.
• OF Nick Paxton became the first Flame to hit for the cycle since 2006 on 3/1. His home run
was the first by any player at Liberty Baseball Stadium. For the weekend, Paxton hit .500,
scoring five runs.
• Paxton leads the Flames with 16 runs scored.
• C Trey Wimmer has thrown out 65.5% of baserunners trying to steal this season.
• Wimmer was selected the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 18-24.
• The senior went 6-for-9 (.667) during Liberty’s three-game series against Penn State, 2/2425. Five of his six hits went for extra bases, three doubles and two triples, for a 1.444 slugging
percentage. He drove in a team-high six runs.
• 1B Alex Close has hit in seven straight games, the longest current hit streak by a Flame.
• RHP Trey Lambert also improved his record to 3-0, this past Sunday. The sophomore
pitched seven scoreless innings, before allowing runs in the eighth. The runs halted the RHP’s
14-inning scoreless streak.
• RHP Brooks Roy gave the Flames another strong outing Saturday. Despite picking up his
first loss of the year, Roy (2-1) retired the Bulldogs in order in five out of the eight innings he
worked. He retired seven or more Georgia batters in a row on two different occasions during
the game.
• Roy leads the Flames with 25 1/3 innings pitched.
• RHP Willi Martin recorded his first collegiate win with three-plus innings of work on a staff day
at East Carolina, 2/27. Martin faced the minimum nine batters through the first three innings.
• RHP Patrick Bankemper, RHP Justin Richardson and LHP Jared Lyons lead Liberty in appearances this season with seven each.
• RHP Ashton Perritt has converted two save opportunities this season.
• LHP Blake Fulghum has not allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings over his first two appearances as
a Flame.
• Freshman Dalton Britt has started every game at SS this season.

Toman Closes in on 200
• Liberty Flames head coach Jim Toman is three wins away from his milestone 200th victory.
• Toman will become only the second of the six coaches in program history to reach the milestone. Liberty’s first head coach Al Worthington is the other, having posted 343 wins during 13
seasons.
• Toman has posted the highest NCAA Division I winning percentage (.633) during his first five
years in Lynchburg of any head baseball coach in program history.
• The Flames have posted the top two season win totals in program history during Toman’s
tenure, posting a school record with 43 victories in 2010 and 41 victories in 2012

• After 34 years of playing at Worthington Stadium, the Flames christened a new facility
on Feb. 23-24, the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
• Liberty opened the stadium with a three-game sweep of Penn State, Feb. 2/23-24 and
went on to win their first seven games at the facility.
• When completed in June, the stadium will have 2,500 chairback seats, a turf playing
field, a operations center for the baseball program and a fully functional press area.
• Over the years, the Flames were rather successful on their home field at Worthington
Stadium.

A Look Back at William & Mary
• The Flames were held to three runs and five hits in their first loss at the new Liberty
Baseball Stadium last Tuesday.
• Liberty had their nine-game winning streak snapped in the 5-3 loss to William & Mary.
The streak tied the program record for consecutive wins at the NCAA Division I level.
• Liberty scored less than four runs in a game for the first time this season since a 3-2
win at South Carolina on Feb. 17.
• OF Ryan Cordell had two hits on Tuesday to continue his hit streak. The junior has
had at least one hit in every game this season. His 12-game hit streak is a career high.
• Cordell also stole his fifth base and recorded his 15th RBI in the contest. He leads the
Flames in both categories.
• LHP Blake Fulghum allowed Liberty to rally and cut their deficit in the contest. He did
not allow a run over 2 1/3 innings in his second appearance for the Flames.
Wimmer Selected as Big South Player of the Week for 2/18-24
• Liberty catcher Trey Wimmer was named the Big South Conference Baseball Player of
the Week for games played Feb. 18-24.
• The senior hit .667 (6-for-9) with six RBI, three doubles and two triples in leading the
Flames to a three-game sweep of Penn State.
• Wimmer notched a 1.444 slugging percentage and recorded an on-base percentage of
.600. He threw out the only runner attempting to steal a base in the series.
• The honor marks his first Big South Player of the Week nod for his career.
