met for the first time since 2004, last season. The Bulldogs took the contest, 5-3, on April 16.
• Liberty had its contest against Maryland canceled on Wednesday due to inclement weather in
Lynchburg, Va.
• Liberty started the month of March with 4-1 record. The Flames are 371-286-2 (.564) all-time

• Liberty went 5-2 in the month of February. The Flames have posted a 14-3 mark in the month
over the past two seasons, as they jumped out to a 9-1 start in 2012.

Jim Toman enters his sixth year at
Liberty after posting the highest NCAA
Division I winning percentage (.633)
during his first five years in Lynchburg
of any head baseball coach in program
history.
With a 41-19 record last season, Toman’s Flames have now posted the
school’s top two single-season win totals
in program history. The 2010 Flames set
the school record for wins with a 43-18
campaign.
The Flames have notched a 187-108-1
overall record during his five seasons on
Liberty Mountain and have also posted
an 82-43 Big South mark over the span.
Along with their second 40-plus win
season in 2012, the Flames set school
records for team ERA (3.04) and
shutouts (11).
Toman saw seven players from his
Flames squad selected during the 2011
Major League Baseball Draft, the most
players chosen in a single draft in the
39-year history of the program. The
number ties the 2007 and 2010 Coastal
Carolina squads for the Big South Conference record for players picked in a
single draft.
The impressive strides made by the
program have not gone unnoticed. In
December, Rivals.com selected Toman
as one of 10 Collegiate Head Coaches
on the Rise, while in November of 2010,
Rivals cited Liberty as one of college
baseball’s top 10 rising programs.
Toman was named the sixth head
coach in the history of the Liberty
Baseball program in June 2007, after
11 seasons as the senior member of
Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South
Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18
years alongside Tanner, dating back to
the 1990 season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and
coached the catchers. Known as one
of the top recruiters in college baseball,
the 22-year college coaching veteran
was named the 2002 Baseball America/
American Baseball Coaches Association
Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman
served under Tanner for seven years at
N.C. State.
A native of Monroeville, Pa., Toman
and his wife Ashley live in Forest, Va.
They have three children - Caroline (15),
Charlie Mac (12), and Tucker (9).

Tracking Liberty
• The Flames had their nine-game winning streak snapped in a 5-3 loss to William & Mary
on Tuesday. The streak tied the program record for consecutive wins at the NCAA Division I
level. The mark has been reached in seven different seasons.
• Tuesday, Liberty scored less than four runs in a game for the first time this season since a
3-2 win at South Carolina on Feb. 17.
• OF Ryan Cordell had two hits on Tuesday to continue his hit streak. The junior has had at
least one hit in every game this season. His 12-game hit streak is a career high.
• Liberty pitchers did not allow a run over a 24 2/3 inning span this past weekend. The scoreless streak included back-to-back shutouts of Siena on Saturday and Sunday.
• RHP Brooks Roy moved to 2-0 with eight shutout innings in a 4-0 win over Siena, Saturday.
Roy scattered six hits and did not allow a runner past second base.
• RHP Trey Lambert also improved his record to 2-0 on Sunday. The sophomore pitched
seven scoreless innings.
• 1B Alex Close’s single in the 11th inning gave Liberty a 4-3 win over Army, Sunday.
• OF Nick Paxton became the first Flame to hit for the cycle since 2006 on Friday. His home
run was the first by any player at Liberty Baseball Stadium. For the weekend, Paxton hit .500,
scoring five runs.
Player Quick Hits
• CF Ryan Cordell has at least one hit in each of Liberty’s 12 games. He is the only Flame to
do so. The streak is a career-high for the junior outfielder.
• Cordell leads the Flames with 14 RBIs and five steals.
• Cordell was named the Big South Conference Baseball Player of the Week for games played
during the opening week of the 2013 season.
• The junior hit .462, posting six hits and a team-high five RBIs against No. 5 South Carolina
during a three-game series, 2/15-17. The OF had multiple hits in all three games and highlighted the series with a pair of hits and three RBIs in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader.
• OF Nick Paxton became the first Flame to hit for the cycle since 2006, this past Friday. His
home run was the first by any player at Liberty Baseball Stadium. For the weekend, Paxton hit
.500, scoring five runs.
• Paxton leads the Flames with 14 runs scored.
• OF Nick Lacik hit .585 in four games on this past weekend, scoring four times He also was
4-for-4 in stolen base attempts.
• C Trey Wimmer and CF Ryan Cordell each hit their first career grand slam at East Carolina,
2/27.
• Wimmer was selected the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 18-24.
• The senior went 6-for-9 (.667) during Liberty’s three-game series against Penn State, 2/2425. Five of his six hits went for extra bases, three doubles and two triples, for a 1.444 slugging
percentage. He drove in a team-high six runs.
• 1B Alex Close RBI single in the 11th inning gave Liberty a 4-3 win over Army, last Sunday.
• 3B Dalton Sype went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored at East Carolina, 2/27

• The Flames got a strong relief effort from RHP Matt Marsh, the fourth Liberty pitcher in the
contest at East Carolina, 2/27. He pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up one hit, while
striking out a career-high five batters.
• RHP Patrick Bankemper, who led the Flames with 26 appearances in 2012, leads Liberty in
appearances this season with six.
• LHP Blake Fulghum has not allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings over his first two appearances as
a Flame.

• After 34 years of playing at Worthington Stadium, the Flames christened a new facility on Feb.
23-24, the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
• Liberty opened the stadium with a three-game sweep of Penn State, Feb. 2/23-24 and went on
to win their first seven games at the facility.
• When completed in June, the stadium will have 2,500 chairback seats, a turf playing field, a
operations center for the baseball program and a fully functional press area.

Paxton Hits for the Cycle
• RF Nick Paxton hit for the cycle in a 6-4 win over Army, last Friday. In order, he collected a
single, a home run, a triple and a double.
• The cycle was the first by a Liberty player since Chad Miller accomplished the feat in an 8-0
win over Longwood on April 18, 2006.
• The junior was 4-for-4 on the day with two RBIs and three runs scored.
• His first home run of the season was also the first home run ever hit at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

Looking Back at Liberty Invitational
• Liberty won all four of its contests over the weekend to run its winning streak to nine games.
• The Flames shut out Siena in back-to-back games, 4-0 on Saturday and 9-0 on Sunday.
• Liberty pitchers did not allow a run over a 24-inning span this past weekend. The scoreless
streak included the back-to-back shutouts of Siena on Saturday and Sunday.
• RHP Brooks Roy moved to 2-0 with eight shutout innings in a 4-0 win over Siena, Saturday.
Roy scattered six hits and did not allow a runner past second base.
• RHP Trey Lambert also improved his record to 2-0 on Sunday. The sophomore pitched seven
scoreless innings.
• Liberty took both of its games against Army, 6-4 on Friday and 4-3 in 11 innings on Sunday.
The Flames’ 4-3 win on Sunday was its first extra-inning game this season.
• OF Nick Paxton became the first Flame to hit for the cycle since 2006 on Friday. His home run
was the first by any player at Liberty Baseball Stadium. For the weekend, Paxton hit .500, scoring five runs.
• 1B Alex Close’s single in the 11th inning gave Liberty a 4-3 win over Army, Sunday.
• OF Nick Lacik hit .585 in four games on the weekend, scoring four times He also was 4-for-4
in stolen base attempts.
• Reliever Ashton Perritt recorded his first win of the season in the 4-3 win over Army on
Sunday, while fellow reliever Josh Richardson earned his first save in Liberty’s 6-4 victory over

Toman Closes in on 200
• Liberty Flames head coach Jim Toman is four wins away from his milestone 200th
victory.
• Toman will become only the second of the six coaches in program history to reach the
milestone. Liberty’s first head coach Al Worthington is the other, having posted 343 wins
during 13 seasons.
• Toman has posted the highest NCAA Division I winning percentage (.633) during his
first five years in Lynchburg of any head baseball coach in program history.
• The Flames have posted the top two season win totals in program history during Toman’s tenure, posting a school record with 43 victories in 2010 and 41 victories in 2012
Wimmer Selected as Big South Player of the Week for 2/18-24
• Liberty catcher Trey Wimmer was named the Big South Conference Baseball Player of
the Week for games played Feb. 18-24.
• The senior hit .667 (6-for-9) with six RBI, three doubles and two triples in leading the
Flames to a three-game sweep of Penn State.
• Wimmer notched a 1.444 slugging percentage and recorded an on-base percentage of
.600. He threw out the only runner attempting to steal a base in the series.

• Cordell hit .462, posting six hits and a team-high five RBIs against No. 5 South Carolina. The OF had multiple hits in all three games.
• The CF notched extra base hits in all three contests and ripped a triple in the series
finale to lead the Flames to a 3-2 win. In the three-game span, he had a .760 slugging
percentage.
• It is the second Big South Player of the Week award for Cordell during his career.
