Jim Toman
Jim Toman enters his sixth year at
Liberty after posting the highest NCAA
Division I winning percentage (.633)
during his first five years in Lynchburg
of any head baseball coach in program
history.
With a 41-19 record last season, Toman’s Flames have now posted the
school’s top two single-season win totals
in program history. The 2010 Flames set
the school record for wins with a 43-18
campaign.
The Flames have notched a 187-108-1
overall record during his five seasons on
Liberty Mountain and have also posted
an 82-43 Big South mark over the span.
Along with their second 40-plus win
season in 2012, the Flames set school
records for team ERA (3.04) and
shutouts (11).
Toman saw seven players from his
Flames squad selected during the 2011
Major League Baseball Draft, the most
players chosen in a single draft in the
39-year history of the program. The
number ties the 2007 and 2010 Coastal
Carolina squads for the Big South Conference record for players picked in a
single draft.
The impressive strides made by the
program have not gone unnoticed. In
December, Rivals.com selected Toman
as one of 10 Collegiate Head Coaches
on the Rise, while in November of 2010,
Rivals cited Liberty as one of college
baseball’s top 10 rising programs.
Toman was named the sixth head
coach in the history of the Liberty
Baseball program in June 2007, after
11 seasons as the senior member of
Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South
Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18
years alongside Tanner, dating back to
the 1990 season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and
coached the catchers. Known as one
of the top recruiters in college baseball,
the 22-year college coaching veteran
was named the 2002 Baseball America/
American Baseball Coaches Association
Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman
served under Tanner for seven years at
N.C. State.
A native of Monroeville, Pa., Toman
and his wife Ashley live in Forest, Va.
They have three children - Caroline (15),
Charlie Mac (12), and Tucker (9).

ERA Record Fall in 2012
• Last season, the Flames set single-season program records for ERA and shutouts.
• The 2012 Flames posted a 3.04 team ERA, eclipsing the previous standard of 3.06
established by the 1980 Flames.
• Liberty’s ERA ranked 15th nationally.
• The Flames gave up 217 runs, the fewest by a Flames team since allowing 209 in
1991. The school record for fewest runs allowed in a season is 171 in 1980.
• Liberty finished the season tied for 12th in the country in runs allowed per game. The
Flames gave up only 3.4 runs per game in 2012.
Shutouts Record Too
• Senior right-hander Patrick Eckelbarger’s four-hit, complete-game 7-0 victory over No.
2 seed Campbell on May 24 at the Big South Championship was Liberty’s 11th shutout
of the year in 2012, setting a new Big South and Liberty record.
• Liberty’s 11 blankings eclipse the 2000 Winthrop Eagles’ mark of 10.
• The Flames led the nation with 11 shutouts.
• The Flames more than doubled the previous Liberty record of four shutouts in a
season. The 1978, 1981 and 2001 teams each pitched four shutouts in a year to set the
previous standard.
• Liberty opened the season with back-to-back shutouts, Feb. 17 and 18, at the Citadel
Challenge. It was the first time in the program’s 39-year history the Flames opened a
campaign with two shutouts.
• The back-to-back shutouts were the first by the Flames since March 1996, when
Liberty blanked Delaware St. twice at the North Florida Tournament by identical scores
of 5-0.
Four Flames on All-Conference Team
• 2B Bryan Aanderud, SS Zack Haley, OF Ian Parmley and RHP John Niggli were all
named to 2012 Big South All-Conference teams.
• Each player received his first all-conference mention.
• Parmley and Niggli were selected to the all-conference first team.
• Aanderud and Haley were named to the all-conference second team.
