The impact of a forensic collaborative for older adults on criminal justice and victim outcomes:
A randomized-control, longitudinal design
National Institute of Justice (2013-MU-CX-0032)
DePrince Vita September 2016, 29
3/1/2014-6/30/2018
$622,283 (Direct only: $438,689).
An estimated 11% of older adults have experienced maltreatment, while financial
exploitation costs older adults $2.9 billion annually. Given the complexity of service
needs and legal issues in older adult cases, researchers and practitioners have increasingly
called for the development of multidisciplinary, forensic collaboratives to respond to
victims. To date, no tests of the impact of forensic collaboratives on victim- and criminal
justice-focused outcomes exist. The primary goal of this proposal is to conduct a rigorous,
randomized-control evaluation of the impact of the Denver Forensic Collaborative
(DFC), a victim-focused, forensic multidisciplinary team, relative to usual care (UC) on
criminal justice as well as victim physical and mental health outcomes.
Expanding Use of the Social Reactions Questionnaire among Diverse Women
National Institute of Justice (2012-W9-BX-0049)
1/1/2013-6/30/2017
$499,812 (Direct only: $357,447)
This project addresses the need to understand social reactions of different actors
following sexual assault, including reactions from social support system members (e.g.,
family/partners versus friends); criminal justice-based personnel (e.g., law enforcement,
system-based advocates, prosecution); and community-based victim service providers
(e.g., rape crisis personnel, medical personnel, counselors, community-based advocates).
We will examine women’s reports of social reactions to sexual assault longitudinally,
testing hypotheses about the inter-relationships among social reactions, victim well-being,
and criminal justice variables (e.g., victim engagement). Role: PI.

Subcontract: $249,909 (Direct only: $195,414)
This project examines legal needs of crime victims in Denver to inform the development
and implementation of wrap-around legal services that take into account the complex
issues (including psychological symptoms) facing crime victims. Grant awarded to Rocky
Mountain Victim Law Center for program implementation with subcontract to DePrince
for research component. Role: Research PI.

Preventing Revictimization in Teen Dating Relationships: A Randomized Control Trial with
Adolescent Girls in Foster Care.
National Institute of Justice (NIJ-2009-MU-MU-0025)
10/1/2009-08/31/2013
$777,813 (Direct only: $535,588)
DePrince Vita September 2016, 30
This project draws on the dating violence and sexual revictimization (RV) literatures to test
two interventions to decrease revictimization risk in adolescent teens, one of which focuses
on gender socialization and the other which focuses on risk detection. The project involves
collaboration with Denver Human Services to recruit teen girls in foster care. Role: PI.
Trauma History and Symptoms among Women Exposed to Domestic Human Trafficking
Colorado Campus Compact
10/1/2011-6/30/2013
$750
This pilot study focuses on documenting domestic trafficking victims’ trauma histories and
symptoms as well as service needs; this research will then be used to inform developing
policy and practice in Denver in collaboration with our study partners at the Denver District
Attorney’s Office and Denver Police Department. Role: PI.
Deployment-focused development of depression treatment for victimized youth.
National Institute of Mental Health (1 R34 MH080102-01A1)
6/1/2008-5/31/2012
Direct $447,840, Indirect $138,950
This primary goal of this R34 application was to develop and conduct an initial evaluation of
a modified cognitive-behavioral treatment (m-CBT) for depressed adolescents with histories
of interpersonal trauma. Treatment modifications are based on the hypothesis that standard
CBT does not address two factors central to depression in trauma-exposed youth: 1.) deficits
in executive function; and 2.) trauma-related cognitions. Because a history of interpersonal
trauma is prevalent among depressed adolescents in community clinics, this project used a
deployment-focused model of treatment development in order to create a “clinic-ready”
intervention. Role: Co-PI with S. Shirk.
Supplement to Deployment-focused development of depression treatment for victimized youth.

The Effectiveness of Coordinated Outreach in Intimate Partner Violence Cases: A Randomized,
Longitudinal Design
National Institute of Justice (2007-WG-BX-0002)
7/01/2007-3/1/2011
$499,880 (Direct only: $361,957)
This study tested the impact of a community-coordinated response program on criminal
justice and well-being outcomes following intimate partner violence (IPV). In partnership
with community- and criminal justice-based agencies, the project used a randomized control
design to evaluate an innovative outreach program for IPV victims whose cases came to the
attention of the criminal justice system. Results from this project inform program
development, policy decisions, and extension of the program to other jurisdictions. Role: PI.

DePrince Vita September 2016, 31
Tony Grampsas Youth Services (TGYS) Program, 2005-2010
Sexual Assault Prevention Fund, 2005-2009
Denver Children’s Advocacy Center implemented a Safe from the Start program with
preschool- and school-aged children and their caregivers to provide education about child
safety. The goals of the program were to reduce childhood sexual abuse by increasing
children’s and parent’s understanding of child safety and community resources for child
abuse. In my role as Consultant on three grants (local and federal) funding this work, I
assisted with program evaluation (e.g., selection of measures, data analyses). Role:
Consultant.
Cognitive and brain processes in individuals with childhood interpersonal trauma.
National Institute of Child Health and Development
$147,261
The project examined executive function in adult women exposed to childhood abuse using
imaging (fMRI) and behavioral methods. My contributions to the grant development were
primarily related to sections on recruitment, measurement of abuse/post-trauma symptoms, and
ethics of trauma research. The single imaging study funded by this project provided primary
data for a graduate student in Banich’s lab.
Marie Banich, Ph.D. (University of Colorado Boulder), PI. Role: co-PI.
Development of the Trauma Appraisal Questionnaire
National Institute of Mental Health (1 R03 MH068624-01A1)
3/01/2004-2/28/2007
$138,606 (Direct only: $100,328)
The major goal of this project was the development and validation of a self-report measure of
trauma appraisals (e.g., fear, shame, betrayal). Development and validation of the measure
occurred across three phases of study: item generation (Phase I), item analysis, establishment
of internal consistency and construct validity (Phase II), and establishment of criterion
validity (Phase III). Role: PI.
A Multimethod Approach to Understanding Risk Detection Following Trauma
National Institute of Mental Health (1 F31MH079769-01A1)
8/1/2007-7/31/2008
$40,935
This study examined risk detection as a function of violence exposure. In particular, the study
tested the prediction that risk detection operates differently depending on the woman’s
physiological reactivity and subjective experience of reactivity. Role: Sponsor.
Explicit memory in children exposed to domestic violence
National Institute of Mental Health (F31MH06927-02)
2003-2004
This project evaluated memory function with respect to domestic violence exposure and
posttraumatic symptoms in school-aged children. Children (and guardians) were recruited
from community sites, including domestic violence shelters. Role: Sponsor.

Elder Maltreatment Risk and Consequences
University of Denver
7/1/2012-12/30/2014
$48,916.55
The current project assesses risk factors for and consequences of elder maltreatment (i.e.,
abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation), along with exploration of the service needs of older
adults at risk for maltreatment. The study involves partnership with the Justice Program for
Older Adults of Denver (an interdisciplinary coalition of legal, adult protective services,
intimate partner violence, and senior service agencies). Role: co-PI with Leslie Hasche.
Preventing Victimization among Homeless Youth
University of Denver PROF
7/1/2012-8/15/2014
$28,484.00
The current study addresses the public health problem of violence exposure among homeless
youth. We will test an intervention that aims to reduce revictimization among homeless youth
by focusing on youth’s abilities to detect and respond to potentially dangerous situations and
people, referred to as risk detection. The goals of this project are: to develop a manualized
intervention for reducing homeless youths’ street victimization; to test the feasibility of
providing this intervention to a sample of homeless youth in Denver; and to determine
preliminary outcomes associated with the intervention. Role: co-PI with Kim Bender.

How do the types of appraisals people make in response to traumas relate to the type and
severity of distress experienced? Given the importance of appraisals, and limitations of
current measurement approaches, we developed and tested the initial psychometric properties
of the Trauma Appraisal Questionnaire (TAQ). An important next step in the development of
the TAQ and research on posttraumatic appraisals more generally is to examine these
processes cross-culturally. To that end, I will collaborate with colleagues in the Netherlands
and New Zealand to extend this work to non-North American samples. Role: PI.
Revictimization Risk and Executive Function in Recent Female Crime Victims: A Prospective
Evaluation
University of Denver, Professional Research Opportunities for Faculty (PROF) Award
7/01/2007-10/01/2008
$13,850
This study tested an innovative hypothesis that deficits in executive function (EF)
performance contributes to revictimization. Executive functions include a range of cognitive
skills involving attention (the ability to shift, inhibit and focus attention), manipulation of
information in working memory, self-monitoring, and planning and execution of behaviors.
We proposed that EF deficits underlie difficulties detecting and responding to threat in
potentially victimizing situations, thereby increasing revictimization risk. Role: PI.
Child Maltreatment, Attention and Memory
Professional Research Opportunities for Faculty (PROF) Award, University of Denver
7/01/2004-8/31/2006
$15,000
This project tested the prediction that maltreatment by a caregiver will be associated with
specific alterations in basic attention and memory abilities; such alterations increase

maltreated children’s risk for school-related problems. Children who have been exposed to a
range of traumas (e.g., maltreatment by caregiver, natural disaster, community violence) and
control children (no trauma) were tested on measures of attention, memory, and school
achievement (N=119). Study results will be applied to developing cost effective
interventions to help maltreated children succeed in the classroom. Role: PI

Returning Trauma Research to Our Community
Public Good Grant, University of Denver
2/1/2005-1/31/2006
$8,000
Service agencies working with children, adults and families exposed to violence often have
limited access to cutting edge research that would inform their services. As part of the
current project, researchers from DU’s Traumatic Stress Studies Lab and our Denver
collaborators presented on current research and provided consultation regarding research
issues to more than 125 participants from community agencies working with children,
families, and adults exposed to violence. The meeting program was developed in
consultation with our community partner, Victim Services Network. As a follow-up to the
meeting, we developed and launched a new website to disseminate research-related
information to victim service providers in the community. Role: Faculty

Returning research to the community: Research on the effects of trauma
Rosenberry Fund, University of Denver
4/01/2004-3/30/2005
$1,000
The major goal of this project was to build partnerships between researchers and social
service agencies working with children, families and adults exposed to trauma. I organized a
half-day conference in which research from my lab and other labs in the Denver metro area
was presented to participants from community social service agencies. Role: PI.
