Alridge • Thursdays, 2:00-4:30 pm • This course examines ideas of social and political consciousness in hip-‐hop culture. It also focuses on hip-‐hop’s connections to previous intellectual, cultural, and social movements. • In addition to recent scholarship in hip-‐hop studies, the course will explore the creative writings of W.E.B. Du Bois, Alain Locke, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and Sonia Sanchez, among others. • Poetry readings and guest lectures and performances will be a major part of the course. Please note that the course is reading and writing intensive.
