SPAN 4520 Hispano-Philippine Studies: An Introduction ·∙ After the initial encounter with the Americas in the sixteenth century, the Spanish were eager to get across the Pacific and continue their conquests in Asia. Although many dreamt of creating an Asian empire that would ·∙ ·∙ ·∙ include China, the only Asian territory that was subjected to the Spanish crown were the Philippine Islands. The islands were to remain Spanish until 1898, when they were lost to the US in the Spanish-American war. In the meantime, they developed a complex culture in which a small number of Spaniards and Hispanized Filipinos ruled over a native population that spoke over seventy-five different languages, as well as an immigrant population from various parts of Asia, especially China. This course surveys the literature and culture of the Philippines under Spain from the first contact between the islands and Europeans in the sixteenth century, through the early twentieth century, when US dominance effectively put an end to the use of Spanish in the islands. No prior knowledge of the subject is assumed. This course counts as a “Culture and Civilization” course for the Spanish major, and also as a 4000-level elective. If interested in taking the course, please contact Professor Padron at [email protected] ANTH 1401 Your Heritage Language ·∙ This course introduces students to the fields of structural linguistics, social approaches to the study of language, and language policy through a focus on the traditional or heritage languages spoken more or less actively within students’ own families and home communities. While heritage languages may continue to be transmitted, they often do so in a partial and socially muted way that leads to their eventual loss: they may be used only privately in the home, or with a reduced expressive range and set of functions, or exclusively in an oral medium. The lack of visibility and public acceptance of the many heritage languages that surround us submerges the full range of linguistic practices beneath a powerful monolingual norm. ·∙ ·∙ In this course, we prepare students to draw upon linguistic diversity as a positive resource in developing their own identities and interacting with others in our multicultural society. Open to 1st and 2nd year students. Instructor permission required.
