Challenge: Mitigating Risk
ƒ Defining strict governance up front and identifying
collaborative teams:
Requirements had to be explicitly identified for every
organization dependent on the Oracle platform
ƒ Minimizing down time:
Access to corporate data was vital to normal operations
ƒ Process-focused enterprise initiative:
New platform must enable cross-functional systems and
applications

Solution: Company-Wide Commitment
ƒ Top-priority initiative:
Oracle upgrade had highest-level executive involvement from
start to finish, and top priority for resources to ensure
undisrupted implementation phases
ƒ Re-architected data infrastructure:
A three-tiered model introduced lightweight client software,
built-in load balancing, and a new storage area network
ƒ Rigorous cross-functional-area project management:
A new software configuration management process and indepth go-live rehearsals analyzed all potential outcomes

Next Steps: Future Enhancements
ƒ Out-of-area disaster recover plan:
Redundant data centers currently provide protection, with
automated failover mechanisms; a similar backup plan will
provide out-of-area coverage
ƒ Content caching:
The new storage area network provides a flexible architecture
for intelligently distributing content
ƒ Linux:
The open Oracle 11i platform can integrate emerging Linuxbased systems and applications, and cost-effective Intel-based
servers
