September Newsletter 2015

September Kindergarten
Newsletter
Welcome to a year of discovery in Kindergarten! We have had a great
beginning. This week we began our bear unit. We will continue the bear
unit for the next two weeks. Our activities will be centered on some classic
children’s literature, such as: Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCluskey,
Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin, and Corduroy by Don Freeman.
These fine works will be a springboard for developing many concepts
across the curriculum.
Beginning on September 21st we will start with the letters of the
alphabet, sight words and guided reading books along with some other
seasonal and high interest integrated units. We will start with the letter Ss
the week of the 21st. We will work on a new letter each week.
Letter of the Week
Below is the order of the letters according to our curriculum. This order will
help you keep track of what letter your child is learning each week. We
usually spend one week on each letter.

Guided Reading Folder
Soon your child will be coming home with a plastic guided reading folder.
Twice a week your child will meet with his/her teacher in a small group for
guided reading. For the first week or so your child will be coming home
with a book that has 3 stories with no words, only pictures. Please have
your child “read” the stories to you at night. By doing this it is teaching the
children to use the strategy to look at picture clues to help tell a story.
Soon you will be seeing leveled readers coming home as well. Please
READ these stories with your child NIGHTLY. These folders with the
books MUST return in your child’s backpack daily. If your child does not
have his/her folder he/she will not receive a new book.
Girls
Just a friendly reminder to all our girl parents to please have your child
wear shorts under her skirts! Thanks! 
Highlights for Kids
In your child’s Friday folder you will find a small yellow sheet of paper.
Each year we give our parents the opportunity to order the magazine,
Highlights. This is a fun magazine for you and your child. Please fill out
the form and return to school. If you do not wish to pay for a subscription to
the magazine just mark the “no” line, sign at the bottom and return to
school. If everyone returns their form we get free items for our classroom.
Thanks for helping us earn free goodies!
Cooking
Once we begin working on the letters of the alphabet we will try to do a
cooking project every Friday with the children. We will be cooking or baking
something that ties into what we are studying.
Book Orders
Periodically throughout the year we will send home Scholastic book orders.
If you choose to order books, please check the books that you want, add
up the totals and send a check to school. Checks can be made out to
Scholastic Book Club. Send your order to school in an envelope labeled
with your child’s name. You can also order online using our classroom
code. You will find the code on the order forms as well as on our classroom
website. We are sending the first book order home in your child’s Friday
Folder. ALL BOOK ORDERS ARE DUE BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th.
Walk-A-Thon
Your child will be participating in a walk-a-thon to help raise money for our
school. The walk-a-thon will be taking place next Friday, September 18th.
Parents are welcome to attend. Look in the school newsletter for further
details. http://www.holyfamilydbq.org/st-columbkille-elementary
