February 1, 2016 Dear Parent(s), Where has January gone? Catholic Schools Week will be full of fun. The children are excited to dress as their favorite character and share what they liked about their book. We hope you took some time to discuss your child’s progress report with them. Information about the month of February follows. Religion We celebrate Catholic School’s Week during the first week of February. Students will participate in several opportunities to celebrate the privilege of attending such a special school. During Religion class this month we continue work on the Sacraments, especially learning how we can celebrate God’s forgiveness and be followers of Christ. We will also talk about the Lenten Season and learn how to pray the Stations of the Cross. Students will attend liturgies at 8:50 on February 3rd, 10th, (Ash Wednesday), 17th and the 24th. Mrs. Burke’s Class will prepare the Liturgy on the 24th. We hope you will be able to join us. Reading We will begin working in Theme 6-Animal Adventures. During this theme we will be working on counting the number of sounds they hear in a word and the following phonics skills: long vowel sounds of o and u, long vowel sound of e spelled ee and ea, long vowel sound of a spelled ai and ay, and final consonant clusters ft, lk and nt. Students will also practice using the following comprehension strategies: story structure, summarizing, noting details, making predictions and inferences. We will also continue to send home a book in a plastic bag with your child’s name on it. These books may be sent back once your child has finished it. We encourage your child to return the books in a timely manner so a new one can be sent home. Once again, we thank you for all the help you give your child at home with their vocabulary words and listening to them read. New 3rd quarter goals have been set for AR. Writing In Handwriting class we continue instruction on proper formation of letters, keeping letters the correct size and resting on the line. Students are working on writing a personal narrative. We are working through the writing process, writing a rough draft, proofreading and creating a finished product. In writing this narrative each student will work to keep ideas in sequence and write sentences that tell about their topic. This narrative will become part of their first grade Leadership Notebook. Thank you for sending in the photos of your child to help with their writing. Math Please continue to practice math facts and work toward memorization of addition and subtraction facts through 20. By the end of the year we would like to see students be able to reach a goal of 4 seconds per problem. We are working on counting and modeling numbers through 120 and comparing numbers using >, <, and = signs. Science/Social Studies During this month we will finish our unit, “Where Do I Live?’. In this unit students learned about maps, different land forms and bodies of water and caring for our natural resources. Later in the month children will be learning about the weather and will track weather changes in their Science Journal. Other Our St. Valentine’s Day celebration will include a student card exchange. This will be held on February 12th. If your child chooses to participate in the card exchange, please send enough cards for everyone in the class. A list with student names will be sent home. Show and Tell is February 18th. Sock Hop is February 19th. Skate Party is February 11th. Mrs. Burke Mrs. Weig
