DOD = Department of Defense; DOE = Department of Energy; HHS = Department of Health and Human Services; NASA = National Aeronautics and Space
Administration; NIH = National Institutes of Health; NSF = National Science Foundation; USDA = U.S. Department of Agriculture.
a
Includes postdoctoral appointees in anesthesiology, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology,
oncology/cancer research, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, pediatrics, preventive medicine/community health, psychiatry, pulmonary disease, radiology,
surgery, and clinical medicine, not elsewhere classified.
NOTES: In 2010, postdoc section of survey was expanded, and significant effort was made to ensure that appropriate personnel were providing postdoc data
(see appendix A for more information). Thus it is unclear how much of increase reported in 2010 represents growth in postdoctoral appointments and how much
results from improved data collection. More information on changes in postdoc data will be available in forthcoming InfoBrief at
http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/gradpostdoc. Details on primary mechanism and source of support for postdocs were collected for first time in 2010, and any missing
data in this item were not imputed in 2010 due to lack of historical data.
