Dear Hiring Managers,
Advertising can be a very difficult process. As a hiring manager, it is your goal to reach a target
market to find the best candidate qualified for the position. Additionally, you want to spend as
little as possible and take into account all qualified applicants and support creating a diverse
workforce. This can be a daunting task. HR would like to help you know your options.
Although there are many choices for advertising, HR has collected information on a number of
potential options you may want to consider.
Advertising in print publications has always been commonly utilized for positions at the
University of Denver. The two most utilized publications are the Denver Post/ Rocky Mountain
News, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. Advertisements in print usually have a base price
of around $215.00 then an additional charge either by the word or by the column inch. The
Sunday Job’s section of the Denver Post has developed the reputation of being “the” place to
find available jobs in the Denver Metro Area. The University of Denver usually receives a good
result in posting in the Sunday Section. To hit the Higher Ed market, over 400,000 readers pick
up the Chronicle each week. Chronicle Careers is an excellent place to reach positions specific
to Higher Education. Although print remains the most popular form of advertising open
positions, online ads are starting to increase in value due to the exposure to applicants.
Online advertising has taken off in the last several years and is a great way to reach a large pool
of applicants. As an example, Careerbuilder.com has over 23 million job seekers on their site.
When you place a job on the web, you are reaching a very large amount of applicants for a very
competitive price. However, with so many resumes and so many positions available, searching
can be exhausting for the applicants. When you place a job on the large sites like Monster,
Careerbuilder, or Hotjobs, you are competing with thousands of other companies for the best
talent.
Reaching a specific target market can be accomplished by taking a look at your department and
identifying what the needs are. Our University-wide commitment to diversity can start with
advertising in publications that have a diverse readership. Diverse Issues in Higher Ed and
Hispanic Outlook are excellent resources for universities looking for a more diverse workforce.
There are a number of options for advertisers that can best meet your needs for every search. To
advertise effectively, you should put yourself in the shoes of the applicant you are searching for
and try to find a way to communicate with that person. The answers could be sitting in your
mailbox. Many professional organizations or journals have job sites or bulletins to post
positions.
At the University of Denver, all ads that do not require a membership must go through Human
Resources. If you belong to an association that requires a membership, you must get HR’s
approval on the language of the ad before you post it. Human Resources must ensure the
advertisement is consistent with university policy and legal requirements. Each advertisement is
a representation of the University of Denver and should portray the characteristics of our
branding attributes. Each ad should end with the following, “To apply for this position, please
visit our website at http://www.dujobs.org. The University of Denver is an EEO/AA Employer.”
3
There are two ways to request a classified ad. In the process of creating a requisition, you can
attach the request form under documents. You may also visit http://www.du.edu/hr and
download the “Request for Classified Advertising Form.” Once the form is filled out, you may
email to [email protected] or your may send it to the HR Recruiting Specialist directly.
We hope to assist you in making your advertising as effective and easy as possible. Please feel
free to call us or email us at any time for assistance.
Good Luck,
Adam Barnett

Diversity:
CASE is committed to the diversification of the educational advancement profession. At a time
when nearly 30 percent of those enrolled at the nation's institutions of higher learning are
students of color, issues of diversity and equity are of paramount importance for the future of
education and educational advancement.
Diversity is an economic imperative. Like niche advertising, niche giving will be the future of
educational philanthropy. As state and federal allocations to education wane, educational
institutions must seek other sources of support for their programs.
Successful advancement offices must employ individuals who can tap the resources of an
increasingly diverse alumni population, which expects approaches and programming to mirror its
culture and values. This is a win-win proposition for both the donor and the institution. When
alumni of color support, for example, the establishment of endowed chairs in ethnic studies or
scholarships for students of color, they enable the university to reallocate dwindling resources to
other areas. At the same time, giving connects these alumni to the institution by empowering
them in the same way that giving has for more established constituency groups.

Description:
We are excited to include you in groundbreaking changes for the Black Issues In Higher
Education publication!
When we started Black Issues In Higher Education over 20 years ago, we were challenged with
covering the real issues relevant to African-American higher education professionals. We
recognized then that the success of the publication would depend on appealing to a broad group.
About five years ago, many of you asked for more diverse coverage. We responded with much
broader content. The changes met your needs, and the publication now has a clear leadership
position among all journals of higher education in reaching minority audiences. But times have
changed - and so have we.
Now, we're ready to take the next step…and introduce an enhanced publication retaining the best
of Black Issues In Higher Education and expanding further to include an even broader
audience. We simply call the magazine DIVERSE. As its origins are rooted firmly in the culture
of Black Issues In Higher Education, the publication will certainly grow quickly - strengthening
its position as the primary publication on diversity to reach the higher education community.
We believe this will make a great media buy for both recruitment and product and services
advertising. The advertising opportunities of this multi-cultural, high-income market segment
will provide an extraordinary environment to talk directly to a diverse audience in education.
This is not just a name change…it's a reaffirmation of our commitment to meet the needs of the
entire target audience. A great media buy just got better! Our first edition will include a bonus
circulation that will reach an additional 20,000 higher education professionals. There has
never been a better time to target this unique market segment.

Description:
Back in 1977, Denver was booming. Thousands of Baby Boomers were fleeing the coasts, lured
to Colorado by the climate, the scenery, the promise of endlessly flowing Coors. But with the
deluge came a dilemma: so many young, active people--and so little to read that told them what
was happening in their increasingly dynamic city. That's why Westword was born.
Today, Denver is again booming. Those Seventies pioneers have stayed, rehabbing inner-city
neighborhoods or moving to the suburbs while moving up in their careers. One thing, however,
remains constant: They still rely on Westword to give them the straight story every week. And
now another generation is flooding the city, young adults lured by the climate, the scenery, the
country's highest concentration of microbreweries. Westword captures the city for this group,
too.
Since its purchase by New Times in 1983, Westword has grown into one of the
largest alternative weeklies in the country--even though Denver is a major
battlefield in a daily newspaper war. Every week, the new edition is eagerly
snatched up in college classrooms, coffeehouses, corporate offices and at the
State Capitol by faithful readers who appreciate hard-hitting, award-winning
journalism.
