Reinventing Retirement
Join instructor and executive coach
Lori Zahn as she shares the philosophy, process, and learning outcomes
for this integrative program. Lori is
an executive coach working with organizational leaders and career professionals, as well as a University College faculty. Lori brings her passion
for the third age (retirement) and for
working with people to create fulfilling next chapters.
Both those who want to move on to
the next chapter in their lives where
career is no longer the predominant
focus, and retirees interested in reinventing their retirement will benefit
from his program.
Attendees will explore what constitutes a successful third age, build on
their sense of purpose and passions,
identify personally meaningful forms
of engagement outside of work, and
explore potential outlets for their experience, skills, and passions.
The presentation, parking and refreshments are all free.

Retirees Sought for Mentoring Program
Mentoring is an opportunity for a University of Denver retiree to provide
personal, professional, and/or career-related guidance to a fellow staff
or faculty member (mentee) seeking such assistance. Many DU staff and
faculty are nearing retirement and they could use the added resource of
a mentor who has already navigated the retirement process.
How does it work? The prospective mentee looks over the list of available mentors and applies to receive a mentor.
A Volunteer Mentor
Helps Guide a Future
Retiree
Prior to the first mentoring meeting, HR’s People Development team provides some guidelines and suggestions to help get the mentoring relationship off to a good start. Because each mentoring relationship is different, there is no mandated number of meetings. Typically, most mentoring
relationships meet for at least three sessions spread out over a few
months.
If you would like to become a mentor, review all the information available on the website http://www.du.edu/human-resources/peopledevelopment/mentor-team-accountability-programs.html. This should
give you a pretty good sense of the program. Then simply complete the
online mentor application (https://udenver.qualtrics.com/SE/?
SID=SV_0kQYPnAGSNfl0b3) and submit a jpg photo of yourself to Greg
Giesen, manager of employee development, at [email protected]. Once
your application and photo are received, a member of the People Development team will contact you with next steps.

ACE Conference Focuses on Faculty Retirement
On January 11 &12, Diane Wendt, DU Retirees
Board member, attended an American Council of
Education conference entitled “Navigating Retirement Transitions.” The Conference was funded by a grant from Alfred P. Sloan in the interests of surveying, studying and reporting on faculty issues and concerns as they relate to retirement. An overview of faculty retirement patterns is presented in the following Executive
Summary written by Paul J. Yakoboski, PhD, Senior Economist, TIAA-CREF Institute:
“The retirement patterns of senior faculty are
an issue of ongoing interest in higher education,
particularly since the 2008-09 recession. If a
significant share of tenured faculty works past
"normal" retirement age, challenges can arise
for institutional leadership focused on keeping
the faculty workforce dynamic for purposes of
teaching, research and service. Buyout packages and phased retirement programs have been
common responses to encourage faculty retirement, but colleges and universities are increasingly interested in alternative and complementary strategies to manage faculty retirement
patterns.
Tenured faculty age 50 or older can be divided
into three groups-35% expect to retire by normal retirement age; 16% would prefer to retire
by normal retirement age, but expect to work
longer (i.e., they are "reluctantly reluctant" to
retire); and 49% would like to and expect to
work past normal retirement age (i.e., they are
"reluctant by choice"). The key drivers differ
between those reluctantly reluctant and those
reluctant by choice.
Not surprisingly, personal finances a particular
barrier for those reluctantly reluctant. Psychosocial factors are the issue with those reluctant
by choice. However, one-half to two-thirds of
those reluctantly reluctant appear to be assuming a financial barrier given that they have not
done a careful evaluation of their retirement
finances. A systematic financial review would
test such assumptions.
An analogous dynamic exists among those reluctant by choice-anywhere from 60% to 90% have
not seriously considered what they could do
with their time in retirement. Better management of retirement patterns requires addressing
the psychosocial. Senior faculty should be enabled and encouraged to systemically evaluate
how they could use their time if retired. This
would allow a fully informed decision by the individual. This may or may not result in an accelerated time frame for retirement, but it is a
prerequisite for one”.
