Where Champions Compete Liberty has been very successful in Big South Softball Championships held in Rock Hill, S.C. The Lady Flames claimed their first two conference titles there, in 2002 and 2011, while finishing as runner-up in 1998 and 2008 when Winthrop hosted the tournament. Each of the last two times that the Big South Softball Championship was contested in Rock Hill, Liberty made it to the final round. In 2002, the fifth-seeded Lady Flames swept through the conference tournament to earn their first Big South title. Nine years later, No. 2 seed Liberty dropped its first game to Winthrop before reeling off four straight victories to hoist the championship trophy. 2012 Conference Tournament Rewind The Lady Flames went 0-2 at the 2012 Big South Softball Championship, held at Radford. Liberty opened against No. 3 seed Charleston Southern, with the Buccaneers posting a 14-3 win. Liberty’s Hanna Nichols hit her first career home run during the CSU contest. Presbyterian College then downed the Lady Flames, 4-1, in an elimination game, behind a one-hitter from Leslie Hensley. Wetmore is the winningest head coach in Liberty athletics history, with 546 coaching victories. The Lady Flames’ head coach since the program was reinstated in 1994 following a seven-year absence, Wetmore has coached every game that Liberty softball has played at the Division I level. He has guided the Lady Flames to nine 30-win seasons, two 40-win campaigns, two conference tournament titles, and three Big South regular-season championships. While at Liberty, Wetmore has coached the best players in program history, spotlighted by two All-Americans (Jessica Moore, 2007 and Kelly Strickland, 2011). Also, the Lady Flames have claimed six victories against top 25 programs, including wins over No. 6 Michigan and No. 10 Baylor in 2007 and a doubleheader sweep of No. 24 Virginia Tech in 2006. Wetmore is the third Big South softball coach to reach 500 victories, joining current Winthrop head coach Mark Cooke and former Coastal Carolina head coach Jess Dannelly. Championship Memories Liberty made a stunning run through the 2002 Big South Softball Championship, posting four straight upset victories, including a 1-0 win over host Winthrop in the final game. The team fashioned a 1.29 ERA during the four-game event. Pitcher Ali Thompson was named the 2002 Big South Tournament MVP after recording two victories and a save. Fellow pitcher Jennifer Hurley went 2-0 with an 0.71 ERA. Lauren Hahn batted .417 with two homers and five RBIs, and was one of four Lady Flames to appear on the All-Tournament Team (also Thompson, Hurley and Amanda Goc). Liberty entered the 2011 Big South Softball Championship in Rock Hill, S.C., as the No. 2 seed. After falling to host Winthrop in the opening round, the Lady Flames won four straight games, capped by a 3-1 win over top-seeded Radford in the final, to claim its first title since 2002. The Lady Flames posted a 0.80 team ERA during the tournament, earning a pair of shutouts. Tiffani Smith earned Tournament MVP honors after throwing a no-hitter against host Winthrop, May 13. Sammi Shivock hit two game-winning home runs, one against Gardner-Webb and one in the final against Radford. Meredith Crisante went yard twice on May 13 at Winthrop. Crisante, Shivock and Katrina Johnson all earned All-Tournament honors. Liberty in the Big South Softball Championship By the Numbers 0 - Tiffani Smith pitched a no-hitter against host Winthrop, May 13, 2011, Liberty’s first no-hitter in conference tournament play. 1 - The Lady Flames earned the No. 1 seed in the Big South Championship in 1999, 2000 and 2007 by virtue of winning the conference regular-season title in each of those seasons. 2 - Liberty won its second Big South Softball Championship title in 2011, competing as the No. 2 seed. 2a - Two current Lady Flames played key roles as freshmen during Liberty’s 2011 title run. Sammi Shivock hit a pair of game-winning home runs, drawing all-tournament honors. Katie Zavodny posted two 2-for-3 contests during the conference tournament. 3 - Three Lady Flames, all pitchers, have earned Big South Tournament MVP honors. Katie Phillips was named Co-MVP in 1998, while Ali Thompson and Tiffani Smith won in 2002 and 2011, respectively. 4 - Combined runs scored by Liberty in its two championship-winning games. The Lady Flames won the title, 1-0 over Winthrop, on May 12, 2002, and downed Radford, 3-1, in the final on May 14, 2011. Both of Liberty’s Big South tournament titles have come in Rock Hill, S.C. 4th - Inning in which the Lady Flames scored the eventual winning runs in Liberty’s 2011 title-game victory over Radford. Sammi Shivock hit a solo homer, and Jenny Law hit an RBI single, extending the lead from 1-0 to 3-0. 5 - Liberty won its first Big South Softball Championship as the No. 5 seed in 2002. 6 - Liberty’s seed for the 2013 Big South Softball Championship. The last No. 6 seed to win the Big South Softball Championship was Texas A&M Corpus Christi, which beat No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina twice on May 10, 2003 to win the title. The only other time a No. 6 seed has qualified for the Big South final was 1994, when No. 6 UMBC fell to No. 3 UNC Greensboro. 7 - Total number of runs allowed in five games by the Lady Flames during 2011 Big South Softball Championship. Only four of those runs were earned, good for a 0.80 ERA. Liberty allowed only four earned runs during their conference tournament championship run in 2002. 36 - Number of conference tournament victories for the Lady Flames since entering the Big South in 1994, an average of two per season. During that time frame, Liberty has posted more wins in the Big South Softball Championship than any other league school besides Coastal Carolina, which has 43 conference tournament victories since 1994. The Lady Flames fell to the Hokies, 11-1, in game one, but led game two, 2-1, after six innings. Liberty pitcher Chandler Ball held the Hokies to one run on four hits through six frames before Virginia Tech rallied for three runs in the seventh to down Liberty, 4-2. During game two, Kassidy McCoy hit her third career homer, while Katie Zavodny recorded her 41st stolen base of the campaign. Record Setting Katie Zavodny has stolen a program single-season-record 41 bases so far this season, breaking Stacy Radulovich’s previous record of 39, set in 1996. Zavodny has 79 career stolen bases, and needs two more steals to break Radulovich’s career record of 80 (fourth all-time in Big South history), set from 1996-99. Earlier this season, Zavodny set the single-game record for hits (5, twice), and tied Alycia Stevens’ (1995) record with a 23-game hitting streak from Feb. 24 through April 3. Zavodny leads the Big South and ranks sixth in NCAA Division I in stolen bases. Double the Fun Sammi Shivock leads Liberty with 13 doubles. She has recorded the most doubles by a Lady Flame since 2008, when Ashley Williams connected for 13 two-baggers. Sophomore Amber Donovan has registered 10 doubles this season, matching her total from 2012 when she led Liberty with 10 two-baggers. Donovan is the third Lady Flame in program history to hit 10 or more doubles as a freshman and a sophomore, joining Amanda Maska (2002-04) and Ashley Williams (2005-08). Moving On Up Sammi Shivock and Chandler Ball have recently entered Liberty’s record books. Shivock is now tied for ninth in program history with 22 career home runs (Dawn Jeffs, 2006-07), and holds ninth place in RBIs (93). She is ranked 10th in program history in runs scored (98). Ball, a sophomore, ranks 10th all-time at Liberty with 187 career strikeouts. Off and Running The Lady Flames have swiped 62 bases so far this season, the team’s most stolen bases since recording 65 during the 1999 campaign. Liberty’s 62 stolen bases this year are the fifth-most in a single season by the team in its NCAA Division I era (since 1994). The program record of 93 was set in 1996. New Faces During Liberty’s 2013 season opener, three freshmen - Annah Jo Brittingham, Katie Han and Blair Lawrence - started. Since then, freshmen Kenzie Friesen, Kassidy McCoy and Holly Seiz have all made at least one start, making this the third year in a row in which six Liberty freshmen have started at least one game during a season. More Power Kelby Allen is Liberty’s season leader with nine homers. She went deep twice on April 15 vs. Longwood, her second career two-homer game. Last season, she recorded two round trippers in the Lady Flames’ regular-season finale, also against Longwood. That total is good for its second-most conference victories over a four-year span in program history. Liberty won 43 Big South contests from 2009-12. The team posted a series sweep of Presbyterian College, March 22-23. Liberty’s 2-1 series victory over Gardner-Webb gave Liberty the tiebreaker over the Runnin’ Bulldogs, as the two teams finished in a tie for sixth place. Katie Zavodny hit .416 with 13 stolen bases and 21 runs scored during conference play, while Kelby Allen batted .397 with five homers and 20 RBIs. Hanna Nichols held a .360 batting average in league play, followed by Kassidy McCoy, at .299. Sammi Shivock (.284) drove in 21 runs, while Amber Donovan connected for five home runs. Chandler Ball tossed a complete-game shutout on April 3 versus Radford. And the Award Goes To ... Hanna Nichols and Sammi Shivock have both been named Big South Softball Player of the Week once this season. They are the first pair of Lady Flames to be named Big South Player of the Week during the same season since 2011, when Ashley Bensinger and Keely McMillon were both honored as Player of the Week twice. Nichols earned the award on March 25 after batting .583 with three RBIs during the previous week. Shivock received Player of the Week distinction on April 15, posting a .538 average and seven RBIs during four games played. Big Innings On April 13, Liberty scored six runs during both the fourth and sixth innings, on the way to a 13-5 win over Gardner-Webb. To date, that game is Liberty’s most recent win. During the Gardner-Webb game, Blair Lawrence hit a key, two-run double to spark Liberty’s fourth-inning outburst, which also included a three-run homer by Sammi Shivock. Amber Donovan slammed a three-run home run in the sixth to break the game wide open. 9X3 When Kassidy McCoy went 3-for-3 on April 12 against Gardner-Webb, she became the ninth Lady Flame this season with at least one three-hit game. She joins Kelby Allen, Amber Donovan, Hanna Nichols, Grace Nordan, Holly Seiz, Sammi Shivock, Jill Stephens and Katie Zavodny on the list of Liberty players with three hits in a game this year. K Day in Rock Hill On April 20 at Winthrop, both Chandler Ball and Annah Jo Brittingham registered career highs in strikeouts. Ball fanned eight Eagles during game one, tying her career high, set on April 21, 2012 at Presbyterian College. Brittingham, a freshman, fanned seven Eagles in the second contest while pitching a career-high 8 2/3 innings. Record Hitting Sends Liberty Past CSU, 15-4 On April 7, Liberty scored 11 unanswered runs, registering a program-record-tying 19 hits during a 15-4 win over Charleston Southern. Liberty’s 15 runs were its most against a conference opponent since a 15-6 victory over CSU on April 22, 2005. During the game, Katie Zavodny tied her own program record with five hits (also Feb. 27 versus Hampton), and she is the only Lady Flame ever to record a five-hit game. Holly Seiz drove in six runs on April 7 at CSU, one shy of a school record. Walk (Off) This Way The Lady Flames have won four games in walk-off fashion this season.
