13, 2011, with James Madison rallying for two sixth-inning runs to win game one, 4-3. The

Sammi Shivock Named Big South Player of the Week
Junior designated player Sammi Shivock was named the Big South Conference
Choice Hotels Softball Player of the Week, as announced Monday. She collected her first
Player of the Week accolade, and is the second Lady Flame (Hanna Nichols, March 25)
to be honored by the conference this season.
Shivock hit .538 with two doubles, one home run, seven RBIs and three runs scored
during four games played last week. She played a pivotal role in Liberty’s series victory
over Gardner-Webb, driving in five runs over the span of the final two games, both wins.
Notable Homers
During Monday’s doubleheader between Liberty and Longwood, seven out of the
Lady Flames’ eight runs came via the long ball.
Kelby Allen went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs during game one, a 14-6
Longwood victory. Allen tied her career high for homers, previously set against Longwood,
May 5, 2012, and she has recorded each of Liberty’s last two multiple-homer contests. In
the second inning, Amber Donovan hit a three-run home run for the second game in a row.
Kassidy McCoy slammed her first career homer during the nightcap and added a
sacrifice fly, driving in both of Liberty’s runs as the Lancers prevailed, 9-2.
Last 5
During the Lady Flames’ five-game homestand which concluded on Monday, Liberty
hit .321 as a team with six home runs.
Kassidy McCoy batted .500, while Amber Donovan went 4-for-9 (.444) with two homers and six RBIs. Sammi Shivock and Kelby Allen both hit .438 with six RBIs. Katie Zavodny went .421 and scored four runs.
.300 Club
At present, Liberty has six batters who boast .300 batting averages, helping the Lady
Flames hit .280 as a team for the season.
Katie Zavodny leads the Lady Flames with a .401 average, while Sammi Shivock hits
.338 and Kassidy McCoy checks in at .319. Hanna Nichols and Amber Donovan both bat
.317, and Kelby Allen holds an even .300 average.
Big Innings
Last Saturday, Liberty scored six runs during both the fourth and sixth innings, on the
way to a 13-5 win over Gardner-Webb. It marked the first time that Liberty scored five or
more runs in two different innings of a game since April 10, 2012, when the Lady Flames
recorded back-to-back five-run innings at the start of a 13-5 win over North Carolina A&T.
During Saturday’s game, Blair Lawrence hit a key, two-run double to spark Liberty’s
fourth-inning outburst, which also included a three-run homer by Sammi Shivock. Amber
Donovan slammed a three-run home run in the sixth to break the game wide open.
9X3
When Kassidy McCoy went 3-for-3 on April 12 against Gardner-Webb, she became
the ninth Lady Flame this season with at least one three-hit game. She joins Kelby Allen,
Amber Donovan, Hanna Nichols, Grace Nordan, Holly Seiz, Sammi Shivock, Jill Stephens
and Katie Zavodny on the list of Liberty players with three hits in a game this year.
The last time that two Lady Flames freshmen had three-hit games during the same
season was 2011, when current Liberty players Sammi Shivock and Katie Zavodny did so.
Chasing History
Katie Zavodny has made a run at several records so far this season.
She has set the single-game record for hits (5, two times), and also tied Alycia Stevens’ (1995) record with a 23-game hitting streak from Feb. 24 through April 3.
Zavodny, with 33 stolen bases, needs seven more to break Stacy Radulovich’s singleseason program record of 39, set in 1996. The junior outfielder has stolen 71 career
bases, nine shy of Radulovich’s (1996-99) program record for career stolen bases, 80.
Zavodny is the conference’s leader in steals, and was tied for second in the nation in
the latest NCAA Division I statistical rankings.

Quick Conference Report
The Lady Flames hold an 8-10 conference record, with six Big South games left.
Liberty is 6-4 in Big South home games this season, and is 2-6 in conference away
contests. All four of the Lady Flames’ conference games played on Friday have been decided by two runs or less. The Lady Flames have won one conference game in walk-off
fashion (March 22 - PC), and lost one on a walk-off base hit (March 29 - Campbell). Liberty
has pitched one shutout in conference play (W, 7-0 vs. Radford), and has been shut out
by one Big South opponent (L, 0-11 at Charleston Southern).
The sophomore duo of Hanna Nichols and Kelby Allen has been very effective in
conference play, as Nichols is batting .436 and Allen has hit .421, with Allen scoring 15
runs and registering 17 RBIs. Katie Zavodny (.397) has scored 16 runs in conference play,
while Sammi Shivock (.300) has 16 RBIs in Big South contests.
Walk (Off) This Way
Liberty has won four games in walk-off fashion this season, including twice on the
same day, March 16.
On March 22, Hanna Nichols hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth
inning, as the Lady Flames defeated Presbyterian College, 5-4.
The Lady Flames defeated Temple, 6-5, on March 16, registering a literal walk-off
game winner, when Grace Nordan walked with the bases loaded for the winning run.
Liberty then rallied from a 3-0 deficit, later the same day, with a four-run rally in the
seventh inning to defeat Maine. The team scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom
of the seventh, when a Black Bear dropped a popup that would have been the third out.
Earlier this season, Nordan hit a walk-off, two-run homer in a 9-8, eight-inning win
over Fairfield on Feb. 22.
Moving on Up
Sammi Shivock is nearing the top 10 in Liberty’s career record book in three different
statistical categories.
With 20 career home runs, she is one away from 10th, which is held by J’Nae Jefferson (2007-10). Shivock has scored 93 career runs, one away from tying Shannon Tanski
(1995-97) for 10th place all-time. The junior has collected 84 RBIs, four shy of 10th place,
which is held jointly by Stacy Radulovich (1996-99) and Jenny Law (2009-12)
Shutting the Door
So far this season, both freshman Annah Jo Brittingham and sophomore Chandler
Ball have fashioned shutouts. They are the first Liberty duo since Kat Johnson and Tiffani
Smith in 2011 to each post at least one complete-game shutout during the same season.
Brittingham went the distance during a 7-0 win over Manhattan on March 2, giving up
just two hits.
Ball tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout on April 3 at home against Radford. She
followed it up with a six-hit gem with one unearned during her next home start, a 3-1 win
over Gardner-Webb on April 12.
On the Home Stretch
Following a five-game road trip to James Madison and Winthrop, Liberty will spend
the last two weeks of the regular season at home, a span of seven contests. Liberty will
host midweek twin bills against ACC foes Virginia and Virginia Tech and a weekend series
versus defending Big South champion Coastal Carolina.
Record Hitting Sends Liberty Past CSU, 15-4
On April 7, Liberty scored 11 unanswered runs, registering a program-record-tying 19
hits during a 15-4 win over the Buccaneers.
Liberty’s 15 runs were its most against a conference opponent since a 15-6 win over
CSU on April 22, 2005.
During the game, Katie Zavodny tied her own program record with five hits (also Feb.
27 versus Hampton), and she is the only Lady Flame ever to record a five-hit game.
Holly Seiz drove in six runs on April 7 at CSU, one shy of a school record. Seiz is the
first Lady Flame since Kelly Strickland (April 20, 2011) to record six RBIs in a single game.
