have won each of the last two meetings. The last three Liberty-Longwood softball games
have been high-scoring contests. On May 5, 2012, in Lynchburg, Longwood won game
one, 11-3, before the Lady Flames captured the nightcap, 14-6. Last Monday, Liberty held
on for an 8-7 win over the Lancers in Farmville.
Last Time Out
Liberty built a 6-1 lead over the Lancers last Monday, April 8, and held off a furious
rally from Longwood to win, 8-7. The Liberty win snapped an eight-game winning streak
for the Lancers. The Lady Flames capitalized on six Lancer errors during the contest.
Trailing, 6-1, the Lancers rallied with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Flames
then tallied twice in the seventh, and worked around a leadoff homer by Emily Murphy in
the top of the seventh, winning, 8-7.
Katie Zavodny went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for Liberty, while Hanna Nicholas
was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Megan Baltzell drove in two runs for the Lancers.

to bat .270. Chandler Ball is 5-0 with a 1.33 ERA at home, while Annah Jo Brittingham
boasts a 3-1 home record and 3.56 ERA.
Fantastic Finish

Lady Flames average 8.4 runs per game during the third contest of a Big South threegame set. Liberty closed out the Presbyterian College series with an 8-6 win, before beating Charleston Southern, 15-4, in game three, and posting a 13-5 victory over Gardner-Webb in the final game of this past weekend’s series. In contrast, the Lady Flames
average 4.1 runs per game in series openers, while scoring three runs in the middle tilt.

Saturday, scoring six runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to pull away for a 13-5, sixinning victory and claim the series.
The Lady Flames batted .358 during the Gardner-Webb series, led by Sammi Shivock, who hit .667 with two doubles, one home run and six RBIs.
Kassidy McCoy went 3-for-3 during game one, her first career three-hit game.

run. Hanna Nichols and Kelby Allen both went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
On Saturday, Sammi Shivock went 3-for-3 with a double and a three-run homer. Amber Donovan hit a three-run home run, while Jill Stephens scored three runs.
Big Innings
On Saturday, Liberty scored six runs during both the fourth and sixth innings, on the
way to a 13-5 win over Gardner-Webb. It marked the first time that Liberty scored five or
more runs in two different innings of a game since April 10, 2012, when the Lady Flames
recorded back-to-back five-run innings at the start of a 13-5 win over North Carolina A&T.
During Saturday’s game, Blair Lawrence hit a key, two-run double to spark Liberty’s
fourth-inning outburst, which also included a three-run homer by Sammi Shivock. Amber
Donovan slammed a three-run home run in the sixth to break the game wide open.
5-5-5-5
At present, four different Lady Flames share the team lead with five home runs apiece.
With five home runs, sophomores Kelby Allen, Amber Donovan and Hanna Nichols have
already set their career highs for a single season. Sammi Shivock, at five home runs right
now, set a program freshman record with a career-high nine round trippers in 2011.
9X3
When Kassidy McCoy went 3-for-3 on Friday against Gardner-Webb, she became
the ninth Lady Flame this season with at least one three-hit game. She joins Kelby Allen,
Amber Donovan, Hanna Nichols, Grace Nordan, Holly Seiz, Sammi Shivock, Jill Stephens
and Katie Zavodny on the list of Liberty players with three hits in a game this year.
The last time that two Lady Flames freshmen had three-hit games during the same
season was 2011, when current Liberty players Sammi Shivock and Katie Zavodny did so.
Chasing History
Katie Zavodny has made a run at several records so far this season.
She has set the single-game record for hits (5, two times), and also tied Alycia Stevens’ (1995) record with a 23-game hitting streak from Feb. 24 through April 3.
Zavodny, with 32 stolen bases, needs eight more to break Stacy Radulovich’s singleseason program record of 39, set in 1996. The junior outfielder has stolen 70 career
bases, 10 shy of Radulovich’s (1996-99) program record for career stolen bases, 80.
Zavodny is the conference’s leader in steals, and was ranked second in the nation in
the latest NCAA Division I statistical rankings.
Quick Conference Report
The Lady Flames are two-thirds of the way through the conference slate, and sit at an
even 8-8 with eight Big South contests remaining.
Liberty is 6-2 in Big South home games this season, and is 2-6 in conference away
contests. All four of the Lady Flames’ conference games played on Friday have been decided by two runs or less. The Lady Flames have won one conference game in walk-off
fashion (March 22 - PC), and lost one on a walk-off base hit (March 29 - Campbell). Liberty
has pitched one shutout in conference play (W, 7-0 vs. Radford), and has been shut out
by one Big South opponent (L, 0-11 at Charleston Southern).
The sophomore duo of Hanna Nichols and Kelby Allen has been very effective in
conference play, as Nichols is batting .458 and Allen has hit .392, with Allen registering 14
RBIs. Katie Zavodny (.383) averages one run scored per game in conference play, while
Sammi Shivock (.321) has 16 RBIs in as many Big South contests.

Walk (Off) This Way
Liberty has won four games in walk-off fashion this season, including twice on the
same day, March 16.
On March 22, Hanna Nichols hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth
inning, as the Lady Flames defeated Presbyterian College, 5-4.
The Lady Flames defeated Temple, 6-5, on March 16, registering a literal walk-off
game winner, when Grace Nordan walked with the bases loaded for the winning run.
Liberty then rallied from a 3-0 deficit, later the same day, with a four-run rally in the
seventh inning to defeat Maine. The team scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom
of the seventh, when a Black Bear dropped a popup that would have been the third out.
Earlier this season, Nordan hit a walk-off, two-run homer in a 9-8, eight-inning win
over Fairfield on Feb. 22.
Moving on Up
Sammi Shivock is nearing the top 10 in Liberty’s career record book in three different
statistical categories.
With 20 career home runs, she is one away from 10th, which is held by J’Nae Jefferson (2007-10). Shivock has scored 92 career runs, two away from tying Shannon Tanski
(1995-97) for 10th place all-time. The junior has collected 84 RBIs, four shy of 10th place,
which is held jointly by Stacy Radulovich (1996-99) and Jenny Law (2009-12)
Shutting the Door
So far this season, both freshman Annah Jo Brittingham and sophomore Chandler
Ball have fashioned shutouts. They are the first Liberty duo since Kat Johnson and Tiffani
Smith in 2011 to each post at least one complete-game shutout during the same season.
Brittingham went the distance during a 7-0 win over Manhattan on March 2, giving up
just two hits.
Ball tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout on April 3 at home against Radford. She
followed it up with a six-hit gem with one unearned during her next home start, a 3-1 win
over Gardner-Webb last Friday.
On the Home Stretch
Following a five-game road trip to James Madison and Winthrop later this week, Liberty will spend the last two weeks of the regular season at home, a span of seven contests.
Liberty’s remaining will host midweek twin bills against ACC foes Virginia and Virginia
Tech and a weekend series versus defending Big South champion Coastal Carolina.
One for the Record Books
Katie Zavodny went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, one run scored and two stolen bases on Feb. 27 against Hampton. In the process, she set a single-game program hit
record. Prior to Feb. 27, a four-hit game had been recorded 27 times in program history,
but never a five-hit game. Zavodny has since tied her own record, at CSU on April 6.
Back-to-Back
During the first inning of Liberty’s 5-4 win over East Carolina on Feb. 24, Liberty got
back-to-back homers from Holly Seiz and Sammi Shivock.
Prior to Feb. 24, the last time that the Lady Flames hit back-to-back homers was Feb.
24, 2012, against Savannah State, when Meredith Crisante and Amber Donovan hit consecutive round trippers in the fourth inning.
Record Hitting Sends Liberty Past CSU, 15-4
On April 7, Liberty scored 11 unanswered runs, registering a program-record-tying 19
hits during a 15-4 win over the Buccaneers.
Liberty’s 15 runs were its most against a conference opponent since a 15-6 win over
CSU on April 22, 2005.
During the game, Katie Zavodny tied her own program record with five hits (also Feb.
27 versus Hampton), and she is the only Lady Flame ever to record a five-hit game.
Holly Seiz drove in six runs on April 7 at CSU, one shy of a school record. Seiz is the
first Lady Flame since Kelly Strickland (April 20, 2011) to record six RBIs in a single game.
